ChirpOMatic - Birdsong Europe for Positive User Reviews

Essential AppI downloaded this app after Adam Buxton mentioned it on his podcast. I was sceptical at first but it works really well and have been able to ID loads of birds using it. I now use it every time I go out birdwatching.Version: 3.2.2

Try recording twice. Results are highly variable.1) I repeat tested on a single bird. It gave different results each time I repeated the recording. The recording quality is fine. 2) No indication of certainty is given for each bird species identified. This needs to be added. For example, I recorded by friend talking. The app suggests she is either a cuckoo, robin or a starling..Version: 2.2.1

Fantastic AppReally great little app. Appears very accurate and once you get your ear in helps you identify multiple song birds. Have had for years but never got round to reviewing. Love it so much it’s on my wrist on my Apple Watch for quick access bird identification on the go..Version: 3.0.2

Shazam for bird songsThis app is brilliant it has correctly identified 9 out of 10 times I’ve recorded through it (the 10th one was actually because I only hit 3 seconds of the bird before it flew off). Highly recommended.Version: 2.2.0

Seriously GoodThe ChirpOMatic App is quite simply the best app I have, in any field. The service it provides is seriously good. From a knowledge base of zero, I am now able to identify and recognise a large number of birds by ear alone. All hail the group of spirits who conceived the idea firstly and went to to create the app itself. “Tick VG” is nowhere near good enough a compliment to pay them..Version: 3.4.2

Best bird identifying app there isSo easy and intuitive to use. Press the button, it records the bird sound, tells you what bird it is. Within seconds. Brilliant and ridiculously easy to use..Version: 3.4.0

Usefull but confused by background soundsProbably impossible to get this app perfect because it is rare to get a recording without either other bird sounds or background road traffic which cause spurious results. However I have found it a useful guide and it is better when you get home and use online analysis. Also you have evidence a species was present at a certain area on a recorded date. I got it to help identify warblers and although It hasn’t got the result correct in first place very often if you take several records and compare with the sample recordings you get the correct identification. At present I do not trust it without a good sighting to verify. I expect to get more proficient with practice and I’ve only made around 30 recordings so far and expect to be more confident with increased use..Version: 2.2.0

Worth every pennyBest app on my phone - the joy it brings me is priceless. It’s also very accurate. I never write reviews but this app deserves a round of applause!!.Version: 3.4.4

Where’s the kingfisher?Seems to work well at home in the garden but shocked to find the kingfisher missing. How many others are missing? Are there any upgrades for the app?.Version: 2.2.3

Adds interest to sitting in the garden.Like most people, I love sitting in the garden on a sunny day. Despite being a half decent bird watcher, I have never made the effort to learn each bird’s song. When I’m sitting in the garden I very often can’t locate the bird singing. This app enables me to do identify what bird is singing.I find the app extremely useful, and easy to use. 10/10 from me. Alex McPhail.Version: 3.4.2

BrilliantIt makes me smile every time I open ChirpOMatic because of the name. And because it’s very clever. It somehow manages to pick out the birdsong of one bird amongst other noises, and the analysis is generally spot on. And it’s very easy to use. A joyous piece of software design..Version: 3.2.2

An amazing appI’ve been able to identify loads of birds that I wouldn’t have been able to. I heard a strange call on holiday. It was a scops owl, I would never had been able to know. Even being near those cool birds made me happy. TNAKS LOTS.Version: 3.2.2

Rubbish!I pointed my telephone at a loud song thrush. Very little ambient sound. This app said it was a wood pigeon! It has never got the birdsong correct. I’ve kept up with the updates and reinstalled it several times, even bought a new phone. So, today I was in a marsh listening to a reed warbler a few feet away - a robin said the app! I’ve now deleted it. Waste of money..Version: 2.0.2

Really good!I get a lot of birds in my garden and apart from the ‘obvious’ ones I have always found it hard to identify birdsong. This app is usually spot on - just had a couple of blips when the analysis has come up with a blatantly wrong bird. Great value.Version: 2.0.2

Change app settings to bottom microphone! Before I changed the app settings to bottom microphone, I kept getting the same three bird possibilities. Now I get so many different (and hopefully accurate!) results.Version: 3.2.2

So far so good!I know only a handful of songs but I’ve tested ChirpOMatic on these and it’s right every time. I’ve been looking for an app that does this for ages and happened upon it on the Adam Buxton Podcast. I have recommended it to all my nature-loving friends!.Version: 3.0.1

Do it!ChirpOMatic is amazing! It can detect birds even if you talk over it and it has helped me find birds that I can’t identify, even with loud noises in the background! You should 100% try it!.Version: 3.2.2

Brilliant appFantastic app, just gets on and does what it’s meant to do… helping to identify, record and get more information on the birds I see and hear. Been using it for over a year now and it’s so reliable. Thanks team.Version: 3.2.2

HillyIt’s a lovely app, easy to use and generally quite precise. We’ve used it throughout the pandemic. We’re very old and cannot always remember/retain knowledge as we used to, so having this handy reference nearby is very handy indeed..Version: 3.1.0

So impressed!Thank you so much for providing this incredible app. Clearly it cannot produce 100% accurate results, but in my experience of using it over around 6 months, providing you give the app a fighting chance by trying to record the song in isolation (of course this is often tricky to do!) and without extraneous noises, I’m amazed at how frequently it gets the right results. Such fantastic technology always at hand! What a thrill to identify one of the less common birds! I could go on!.Version: 2.5.0

Pretty good but......what it really needs is a ‘search me guv’ response rather than always coming up with something. There really isn’t much commonality between the song of the skylark and the collared dove. Wind made the recording less clear, I get that. So don’t guess !.Version: 2.4.0

BrilliantI have been hearing a bird at night and had not a clue what it was. Downloaded this app and in a few minutes I knew. Turned out to be a young tawny owl. This along with the RSPB are without doubt the best apps I’ve ever had. Considering the recording was made with a fair old breeze and about 80 metres away from the bird I am amazed..Version: 2.5.0

Brilliant appAs I live next to two natures reserves I often wondered what birds were chirping away, some I knew but others were difficult to identify, but this app has been brilliant to use and now I have added to my knowledge of these wonderful birds..Version: 3.4.2

Like it lots- just one or two reservationsI use the app to get to know more about strange birdsong and have had it some time. I like the idea very much, and it's useful to have the A-Z index for other occasions. The pictures too are informative. Two qualifications: it seems to take a long time to load initially. The birds don't always stay around before the search function kicks in, so I miss some birdsong. Also, the index is a bit off - why 'House Sparrow' when 'Sparrow (House)' would be much more user-friendly? And I still find the symbols (top RHS) a little confusing. That said, I would recommend it..Version: 2.2.0

Can’t make up its mind! Each time it listens to the same bird singing it gives completely different suggestions. How can 12 seconds be enough as bird songs vary so much more these days?.Version: 3.0.3

Wonderful appFamily and friends have found this very inexpensive app so useful and interesting. Strongly recommended..Version: 3.2.2

Very versatile with pretty good accuracyHandy when out & about with no service. Records bird song for analysis later. Hit & miss without connectivity but pretty good online. I love it!.Version: 3.0.3

Excellent customer serviceExcellent back up when I had issues with the app which were of my own making. Cannot recommend them highly enough..Version: 3.0.1

A wonderful appI am very lucky to have bird song in my garden summer and winter, with this app I now can recognise bird song were ever I go, fabulous x.Version: 3.0.2

Works greatI said to my hubby I wish there was a Shazam for birds. Right enough there was. I know it’s more difficult app to make so don’t mind paying £3.99. I live in the county so birds a plenty all chirping at the same time. Your app pretty much nailed it in a kind of order of who was the loudest. Well done. I’m sure there’s lots to add especially the birds that have unique songs/calls like a blackbird or birds that mimic but I was presently surprised..Version: 2.2.0

Love this!Easy to use and very interesting to find out what birds are around while I work or walk my dog.Version: 3.0.3

Great app, especially for beginnersTo my shame, I do not know too much about our native birds in the UK. But with this app I am beginning to learn more, and it is very enjoyable to do so. I hear a bird singing in my garden , on a walk, or wherever. And out comes my phone, tap on the app, tap on ‘record’ , wait a few seconds….. then, by way of identifying the bird, you are either (a) given the name of a single bird to consider as the actual provider of the sound you have heard and you can select yes or no (you do this by playing the app’s own recording of the suggested bird’s sound, then agreeing or disagreeing) OR (b) when the quality of your recording is less than perfect (background noise etc), you may be given a shortlist of candidates, and by the above process you may be able to whittle it down to one bird. Once you have identified the bird, the app provides a bit more information about the chirpy chappie. And you have the satisfactory feeling of knowing a little bit more about the natural environment you live in. And your recording gets added to your ‘library’..Version: 3.2.0

Excellent appThis is a really excellent app. I recorded a bird call which it couldn’t immediately identify. It gave me the option to refer the sound to the developers. Within two days i got an email identifying the bird and confirming it would be added to the database. Excellent support and a great easy to use app..Version: 2.1.0

Great app for bird loversIt identifies correctly as long as you can get a good clear recording within the 12 second timescale. Admittedly it can be a bit hit and miss as you can’t get birds to sing on cue, but with a little patience it pays off. Great app which I return to again and again..Version: 2.0.2

What fun!On my daily walks during the lock down I enjoy listening to the wonderful bird sounds. ChirpOMatic has really helped me identify the birds responsible for these uplifting sounds..Version: 2.3.4

Good value appEasy to use and the provision of options for comparison makes it accurate Fun to use for children since as well as identifying birds the phone recording reveals how much background noise our ears filter out when we listen to something!.Version: 2.3.5

The best bird app I’ve foundThis is an excellent app that does a very good job of identifying most birds very quickly. It has a library of songs as well, though for some reason it isn’t featuring birds beginning with vowels at present..Version: 3.0.3

At last my frustrations answeredI’m hopeless with birdsong, so was delighted when I found this app. Works quite well for me but I don’t find the playback features and the layout particularly user friendly. More at hand explanation needed. Also playback seems a bit random. Not always easy to hear, but then that’s the great outdoors! However very pleased to have the app and our walks are so much more fun!.Version: 2.2.0

Not perfect but I love this appObviously it’s pretty rare for just one bird to sing but I find this app really helpful. Often just backing up what I thought. Sometimes reminding me that of course it’s a common bird not the rarity I was thinking of. Of course it’s far from perfect but I like it..Version: 3.0.3
