Day One Journal: Private Diary for Negative User Reviews

No one can see the journal! For a blogging app one would expect a primary function is to let others read what you write. The only feasible way is to create pdfs and then send them over messaging media to an audience. Ideally, a link could be created where the audience is generated (by e mail) and they link into the content written via a browser. Then each entry will have a share function and whole audience would receive an update email notification where they can link to the most recent and previous shared entries. Dont share the entry and it remains private. I note others have complained about the share functionality of this app. It really has not met my expectations for this one reason.Version: 7.12

Too expensive for a text app. New free Apple app!Being an original support, sad to see this app become too greedy and expensive for basic features. Can’t wait for the new Apple journal app that does everything and more for FREE!!! IOS17, peeps!.Version: 2023.13

Not goodThis is the first journal app I’m trying to use. I don’t understand the positive comments. This app has a lot of glitches and a wierd design. I have never seen journal entries done backwards. You can’t change the design. You have to look very closely for the date, as they are in tiny print, and the only large part of the date is the day - 05. 05 of what? Just made an entry on March 2, it doesnt show up at the top, I made another one. Then found both amidst the entries made in February, before February 3d, because there was no entry made on 02 February, the designers desided let’s stick 02 March entry in there. I want to clearly see the full date the entry was made on or have an option to change the design - if someone wants to only see the day of the month, let them have it, but I want to see the month and the year, and have it run chronologically forward. For some reason the designers think that the time and place where it’s made is more important. Hello most entries by most peope are made at home, the same location every time. Why half the screen is taken by a plus sign and a camera? Why one of the lines tells me how many entries I made and pictures taken? Does it matter to anyone who keeps a journal? Also has glitches with fonts and formatting..Version: 2.5.12

Simple drawing featurePlease introduce a feature that will allow you to write full entries with the apple pencil. The simple drawing feature is only designed for drawing images not handwriting entries :(.Version: 4.1.1

All my entries GONEWe have been paying for this app and use it when we take trips, logging locations and photos. We are not sure when but ALL of our entries are GONE. Heartbreaking..Version: 2023.23.1

Ticked off! But still a great appI have loved Day One as a journal app but I hate subscription services with a passion!.Version: 2.7.2

Love it? Not anymore!A year ago, I said I loved it. Well, not so much anymore. In fact, I'm going to stop using it after too many syncing problems, too many instances of entire entries lost and absolutely NO help from their "support" people. Do not buy/use it - not for iOS, and not for the Mac either..Version: 2.4.2

Concept great but be warnedI began using this journal as a electronic note taking device for work as it has meta data showing when the notes were taken and last edited - brilliant. I paid for the premium being $40 or so to have syncing and unlimited journal entries. I continuously switch between my iPad and iPhone and thought the syncing feature was fantastic, however in the last week and a half, the syncing has failed and there is no eta on a fix or even an update. Consider this before buying the application. My recommendation is to wait until they have a patch for this..Version: 6.5

Great app but…Customer of the classic version and it’s no longer supported on recent iOS. Support your legacy customers please. I’m not looking for more subscription services..Version: 7.3

Stopped working???I wrote one entry and then after that whenever i clicked to write a new one the app kicked me out.Version: 4.15

You need a model changeI loved this app and invested a great deal in using it when it first came out. Then rue developers decided to go to a subscription model and graciously allowed older users to stay on without paying subscription – though this meant far fewer features. But it was never easy to transition between phones, max, etc., especially when you bought new hardware so that you ended up with issues with back ups, etc. even though the developers offered some assistance. In the end, I simply stopped using the app as it wasn’t worth the hassle. I think it’s time we go back to a model that is non-subscription where we perhaps we get charged for version upgrades but not anything else. Subscriptions are expensive, especially when you consider them cumulatively per app and across apps, and while it may be a sustainable model On the business front, it is not for the consumer..Version: 7.18.2

Upload issues with multiple devicesI think the layout and the format is fine but the device needs to work on how it handles uploads. I’ll use an example of an issue: I begin an entry on my iPhone but then I go to finish it on my Mac. Should be no problem with cloud storage. What’s happening is the app will often re-recognize uploads from other devices as your working on editing an entry and will completely overwrite your work with the previous upload. So in my example, if I’m picking it back up on my Mac. After 10 mins of typing my uploads will resync and it wipe all my work I was doing. And this is a very frustrating issue. The only way I’ve prevented this is by closing all other instances of Day One when working on another device. But this could be fixed by having user prompts for conflicting iCloud uploads for similar entries. I have seen other apps simply have a message pop up saying they detected multiple instances of the same thing and asking for me to choose which one to continue working on or delete. Why is it so hard to utilize that kind of feature? Anyways that’s a big issue for me. Especially when your typing something that’s a journal replacing pen and paper thats subscription based..Version: 2.5.12

I loved it for years, but now, not so much.A few years' ago I paid what was my second to largest ever amount of money for an app and downloaded DayOne. It was worth it because I loved it. I loved the design, but most of all I loved the peace and quiet of it. Then it became free, which was fine, as I had already got some good use out of it. Now, after having to download the latest 'free' version, it has become tainted with pop ups and annoying 'extra stuff' that only works on a premium subscription. It also takes longer to open (annoying when I have a thought or inspiration that I want to get written quickly) and its much more glitchy - something I have never encountered previously. I would be more than willing to pay a reasonably handsome one-off amount to have my peace and quiet back and to return to the original journal app. At least this version didn’t try and ram the 'premium version' down my throat..Version: 4.8

Pricing is ridiculous🤬.Version: 3.6.3

“Wherever you need it- Only if you pay*”In an effort to make their Premium services more enticing, they have begun robbing free users of basic functionality. I can no longer sync or access my journal across my devices. This basic, rudimentary feature that has been free for years and years has now been locked behind Day One Premium. It’s updates like these that have made me uninstall many other journal apps in the past. Greatly disappointing move. Day One will no longer innovate new ideas for their premium service and will systematically make the free experience as bone-dry and unbearable as possible..Version: 7.2.2

Too expensive for basic featuresI recently decided to go back to daily journaling and resume using what I remember being a stellar app only to find out that basic syncing between devices and posting pictures costs US$40/year. Are you guys for real? I’m happy to provide ongoing support to the team but this is just too much. $9.99 per year is the upper limit before you really have to think if you’re going to get that much use out of a subscription. So, I’m out. I’ll find an alternative..Version: 2.5.4

Major issue with securityThis app has a major flaw. Even when you set a PIN to unlock your personal notes, there is a moment when you first open the app that you can view the contents before you enter in the PIN. Anyone can open the app and take a screenshot of the journals before the PIN prompt comes up. This is careless from the development and testing team for this app. Fix this and I will bump up my rating..Version: 2.5.4

LackingLacks basic features that many of the other note/journal apps have for free. Deleted.Version: 3.2

How to burn hours of your time for no rewardI should have read the reviews and paid attention to them before spending the £30 plus updating this app. I had a previous subscription to the Classic app and could see and use the journal on both my MacBook and my ipad. Having updated it I can’t use it across all devices any more and your old data is not imported. It’s not an upgrade of the old it’s a new system with new settings and rules around iCloud backup (not allowed in new set up) and settings. So I have to change each device and I wanted to extend across an iPhone and iMac. After three hours and an email to the help desk (we will try and get back to you within a day...) I am still not fully connected and syncing. I don’t have another three hours to spare, life is far to busy to waste any more time on this...Version: 2.5.3

Good App - BUT!Since the latest update you've lost me with your greed! I paid for this app now you bring out a subscription Premium version with features you should be adding to this paid version! You can get %#^+*!.Version: 3.2.1

SuspiciousSo a “private” journal states in the privacy section that it may collect data linked to you on: your location, your health and fitness, your contact info, your own user-generated content, and other identifiers. Maybe it’s fine, maybe it’s not. Either way I’ll stick to an app that chooses not to collect any of my personal data..Version: 7.10

Good but not as good as it used to beIt’s been a few years since I last used this app. I used the original app on a daily basis for a few years but I stopped using it when they introduced Premium. But when I noticed I had a plus account I thought I’d give it a try again. To be honest I don’t enjoy this app anywhere near as much as I do with their original app. It now feels cluttered, cumbersome, sluggish and buggy. When I select a day in the calendar to the left of the screen, I want my journal to show front and centre! It is only using half the width of the screen for some reason. Just show a calendar on the left and my journal entry on the right - why overcomplicate things with multiple columns of entries and extras I havent opted in to. When I make a new entry on a day the month calendar often doesnt update to reflect that the day now has an entry - if I click around eventually it refreshes. After a handful of days I’ve already had 3 app crashes. Thankfully no content was lost, but it’s still annoying and hasn’t improved my mood with this review. The app UI needs to get out of the way of the creative process..Version: 2023.1

Day oneI liked this app - what i don't like is paying for the premium application as a yearly subscription, and the frigging sync deciding it isn't going to keep syncing, maybe because someone plays funny buggers with my apple accounts...either way, I'm less impressed now than I was initially. And correspondence from the application developers really didn't help! I don't appreciate paying for an application, to then have it's "creators" decide to up the ante on my personal writing/thoughts/photographs - without providing any addition security for the app. itself. The response from application developers is inconsistent with advice on the application help section and they very obviously don’t put negative reviews on the application download page, because they’d like you to believe it’s “safe”. It isn’t! Not only do the app developers have the capacity to access your content, paying for a yearly subscription does not mean you are a “preferred” customer - just that they think you’re too stupid to notice when entries go “missing”! Seriously - now exceptionally unimpressed!.Version: 2023.11

Button delaysI had this happen on my iPad with Magic Keyboard. I updated the app and it sorted it self, now it is doing it again. Pretty much renders this app unusable. I hope you can sort it permanently. Happens when the entry is long. Also the arrow keys do strange stuff when trying to navigate, does not happen all the time but sometimes, never know. This app is becoming annoying, needs major fixing. It's becoming unstable. I will give it a bit longer hopefully you can sort this. I would pay for the full version but no way if its going to be like this. Un fortunate really, i thought it's great apart from this. So 1 star as without these problem fixed then i will look for something else..Version: 2023.8

Looks different than on the AppStoreHi, I’m a new user and just downloaded the app, but my timeline view looks different (not as nice) as in your appStore screens: My photos are aligned at the right, bunched up with the date, which makes it look not nicely :( On your screens in the AppStore the photos are on the left, which looks much better and cleaner. Was that changed by accident? I don’t like the look now, it’s such a pity as the rest of the app works well, but this timeline view seems to be the main view to see all my data and be able to read through it, but it’s so squeezed and unpleasant now :( Will that be changed again?.Version: 6.6

My entire entry was deletedI like Day One and have used it off and in for a few years now. I just redownloaded it a few days ago and wrote my first new entry this morning. It took me about 30 minutes and after I was done I was searching for a way to indent the paragraphs, so I selected the entire entry and was surveying the options when I accidentally pasted a link I had copied. Everything was deleted because I pasted the link when the entire entry was selected. Here is why I’m giving two stars: there is not an undo button or back button. I feel as though it is imperative and, quite frankly, obvious that a journaling app, centered around writing and composition would have a feature that allows you to undo the most recent change to an entry. I haven’t journaled in months and this easily avoidable accident does not make me very optimistic about trying it again any time soon, especially with Day One if there is a chance this could happen again. I would happily continue using the app if an undo feature was added, but for now I am too shaken up from those memories being deleted and having no way of getting them back to use Day One again without doubting that this will happen to any of my future entries..Version: 2.5.12

$30 a year for dark mode????I love the app however not allowing dark mode outside of a yearly subscription smacks of greed. IOS will now have system wide dark mode I hope you guys rethink this business model..Version: 3.7

Amazing app - pity I can’t access ANY of my past entriesI used this app for photo, video and written diary entries. It’s awesome to use and fitted my needs perfectly. However, when I changed phones, none of my video or photo data was accessible. Not one. So I went to support, who asked me tons of questions, said they’d look into it and never got back to me. I tried to export my data several times and it failed. I had assumed that the data entered would be stored on a server so it would be accessible by all devices, and they never answered this question when I asked them about it. I also could never access my videos from my laptop either. Also never resolved. I followed up with them several times and it’s now been about six months and literally nothing was ever done. Zero answers from tech support other than “we’re looking into it” which they clearly weren’t. They seemed completely clueless and continued to ask me the same questions over and over. Nightmare. Now I’ve lost around 6 months’ worth of detailed entries. Thanks a million Day One. Don’t use this app if you want to actually access this data in the future. What a waste of time..Version: 6.0.1

Not goodThe recent design changed to the journals that went through without consulting with me, or giving me the ability to roll it back. Make this application absolutely useless to me now I will delete everything and discontinue this account..Version: 2023.16

What happenedI absolutely love Day one. It has met my journal needs for years. It has been so easy and intuitive and such a rock solid dependable, almost friend. I don’t understand why the designers and developers have to do updates that make a perfect thing go bust. This last update has driven me crazy. It seems like everything has been changed. I love to work on an entry and then see what happened on that day in the past. I used to have one click to bring up all the entries from multiple journals in a simple scrolling list that I could review. Not so now. In order to find a list of all the entries it takes about 3 or 4 clicks and searches and then the entries come up in backwards order from what it was so that the newest is at the bottom. Navigating in Day one one used to be simple and easy and now with this latest update it just feels so disjointed. If this was my first experience with Day One I would say no thank you. Since a huge chunk of my life is put down in it’s pages, I will have to get used to a whole new way of getting around. I just wished as with most updates that those who do the updating would leave things alone. Don’t fix something that is not broke..Version: 4.3

DEVS RESPONSE SHOWS IGNORANCE, SEE BELOW.The bar that they’ve put across the top of entries with, the date and ‘done’ on is so badly thought through. it reminds you that you’re in ‘edit mode’, but that is completely un necessary since they’ve introduced entries as ‘touch to edit’. If you’re always in edit mode, then you’re always mentally active, not settled, there’s no longer such a thing as just sitting back with your journal and reflecting on your life with your completed entries. To underline this insult, ‘done’ doesn’t actually do anything useful when you press it! It simply removes your entry from view and displays some random quote in it’s space. Why would that ever be what I want? (See below). Lastly, because the edit mode is always on, anything your device considers mis-spelled will be underlined in red. It’s just not peaceful and feels like being at work editing a Word document. RESPONSE TO DEVELOPER: ‘The done button now dismissed the entry to get back to the timeline’ No, it does not. In landscape view, at least on an iPad, the timeline is continually visible there on the left, there is nothing to ‘get back to’. In portrait mode pressing, ‘done’ does not reveal the timeline, it dismisses the entry to reveal a blank screen with an arbitrary quote. To get back to the timeline you have to press on the journal selection top left. It would be good if you listened..Version: 3.1.1

SubscriptionThe need for a subscription makes this app useless, would be more willing to make a one time purchase of $5 to $10 dollars..Version: 4.11.1

Some issuesFinally upgraded from the classic version. Some good points - iPhone 11 support, nicer UI - but other parts have gone backwards. Tags are harder to search and can’t be sorted alphabetically so aren’t as effective to use. I was hoping I’d be able to filter by multiple tags at once. The calendar view is also quite poor as you no longer get a preview of each entry and a pop-up appears instead, so you can’t quickly skim through your calendar. It’s also hard to notice which entries are favourites, whether in calendar or normal view - favourited entries used to be highlighted in yellow so were easy to recognise, while its now just a small heart tag that is often hidden behind other tags..Version: 4.5

Web-Based Version? As per your website, “Believe your eyes, it’s happening. We’re hard at work building a web-based version of Day One that will allow secure and encrypted journaling from within your favorite web browser like Safari, Chrome, or Firefox.”, I was wondering if you have a timeline. Over the last couple of years, the same comment has been provided to users asking about the availability of a web-based version, and with the above comment being over 7 months in age, will we get to believe our eyes?.Version: 7.22

Goodbye DayOne!When it comes to Journalism, privacy is number one priority and this app has had serious issues messing with my data. I am so glad Apple has finally released their own app putting privacy and reliability first as always..Version: 2023.25

Rip off!Update- exported all my data and moved it to Dairo which does everything I need for a small one off payment. Goodbye DayOne! I invested in DayOne a year or so ago and bought both the iPhone and Mac apps for a cost of close to £50. I thought it was worth it as a long term investment in my memories and the company had won awards for their apps. So whilst expensive it seemed a worthwhile expense. I was angry when they then decided to bring out DayOne 2 which was a completely new app. I realised that the system I had invested in was no longer going to be developed and so I bought the new iPhone app and transferred my memories to that. I didn't bother with the Mac app as it was far too expensive and I had already paid once and was not paying again after only a few months of use. Now they have done it again - by bringing out a premium subscription I won't benefit from any development. I will not pay any more but will continue to use the version of DayOne I currently have until I find another alternative. However, I would advise against using DayOne as a first time customer as they lock you in and then start finding ways of charging you more!.Version: 4.11

No longer recommendedReally sad to be posting a negative review about an app that I truly love, but unfortunately when things go wrong, support has become just about non-existent. People have lost data, the app freezes and refuses to work, and support is just invisible. People have reported waiting for weeks. This simply does not chime with all the talk about daily journaling, mental health benefits and encouraging streaks. You cannot write entries daily if the app just isn’t working, can you? This is such a shame – when I had a minor problem last year, they got back to me within short hours and got the problem fixed straight away. I think they just don’t have enough staff to support how big this app has become. Very sad about this and going to start looking for an alternative. Cannot recommend it any more..Version: 2024.1.1

Disappointing to original Day One Classic UsersNo Premium subscription discount offered to original Day One Classic Users who first supported this app. Very disappointing. We feel very ripped off..Version: 2.5

Writing promptsI got the app mostly for the daily writing prompts. I already journal and have for years, but my journal entries are often short reports of what happened today. I am retiring soon and hope to do much more writing. I write for a living but again, very specific topics and audience, whereas what I hope to write is more of a memoir. My writer friends tell me they write for 30 minutes a day, but most belong to a group with a leader who supplies a writing prompt daily. I was hoping for that. Some days it is that. But way too many days it’s things like “come up with a crazy business idea” or “What were your 5 favorite movies.” Luckily, I have the free version so I can’t complain too much. But I would love it if the daily prompts could be less specific and more like open ended statements or questions that provoke thought. I also am not a fan of the writing streak function, which only records whether I have written in response to the prompt but not if I have done other journal writing on that day. I think it would be more accurate (and less annoying) if it counted any writing done on a particular day as part of the writing streak..Version: 6.9.1

No activity location based map history?I’ve located the activity feed for each day, with the list of various places and photos I have been to, however, when selecting the map tab I cannot see a daily rundown of my activity paths/where I travelled to and what paths taken, and what places I visited on a map? I can see the map, but no path/or hotspots showing activity. I think this is a necessity especially for people who may not necessarily want to write anything on a particular day in their journal, but still want to see their past activity on a map for each and every day? It would be much appreciated if this was integrated, thanking you 👍.Version: 2.7.3

RubbishA very basic app. You are not even able to share a journal you create. Instead you have to join the beta version, which isn’t even a beta version; it’s a waitlist for whenever the functionality becomes available. No dates provided. I won’t be renewing my subscription..Version: 2023.26.1

What the Price Tag is Happening?I’ve had Day One for several years on my Mac. I just downloaded it for my iPad and discovered if I want to sync or do anything other than type, I have to pay a premium fee. F&$% that..Version: 2.5.9

Good app bad supportThe app is pretty good so far but if you don’t sign up perfectly with your phone and computer (for example you have different Apple IDs attached to both) they won’t sync properly and the support team won’t help you. I’ve contacted the support team 3 times now and each time I just get an automated message saying they prioritize paying customers and that if you’re a non paying customer go look on the forums. But I am a paying customer and it’s been over a month and I still haven’t heard anything. I’ve looked in the forums as well and none of them offer any help to my situation either. Frustrating to say the least..Version: 2023.26.1

More font options pleaseMy journals need more colour and variety, could you please add new font options? I’m considering upgrading to premium but not if I can only type in boring basic black font.Version: 6.8

ComplicatedI can’t believe it says 4 plus.Version: 2023.26.1

A Month’s Worth of Entries VanishedOver a month’s worth of entries have simply vanished from my devices and cloud backup. Very disappointing..Version: 2023.13

Doesn’t openI love this app. But since the last update, I can’t open it. It starts loading then crashes and completely shuts down..Version: 2.5.4

I use it every dayI’ve been using the app since mid-2014 (was grandfathered in to Plus and recently paid for Premium). The app has come a long way, and I use it at least once a day now. It’s well-built for a variety of use cases. I have a journal for daily recaps, one each for movie/book/restaurant reviews, a journal for work, and more. It’s intuitive. It’s easy to use, and also as complex as you want to make it (tags, journals, photos, voice recordings, templates...). The location data is key to me because I can get a map view of places I want to visit, or places I have visited. UPDATE: it’s been super buggy and inconsistent the last 2-3months. Streaks are rarely correct (will say 4 days but show a journal with a 21 day streak, or just show no entries at all despite there being some). Sync between devices is slow, used to be near-instant. The daily prompts are all messed up; sometimes showing an extra prompt in the “show all” list, sometimes I’ll click the day’s prompt and it will auto-fill the entry with yesterday’s. Overall, the experience has gotten less good (I won’t say it’s “bad”…yet…) in the last year or so..Version: 2023.6

What's with the price?I bought this app before and it was fine. But now im sippose to pay $5 a month just to sync back the old entries i made and keep paying forever? Seriously?! I hope the app dies a slow horrible death..Version: 2.5.3

Subscription models 🤢It’s a shame such a nice app is wrecked by a subscription model. It would be nice to be able to do a one time purchase for dark mode..Version: 3.5.1

DisappointingThe only single reason this app is disappointing to me is the pricing structure. There is so option for a one time buy, and since there doesn’t seem to be any option to export your data, and obviously ya don’t want to delete all your journals, their recurring pricing structure pretty much means that you are committed to keep paying for it for life. This is very disappointing to me as it seemed like a very good app, otherwise, and I would have gladly paid for it as a one-time buy, but for the sole reason that there is no such option, I just cancelled my free trial, and am on the hunt for another journal app..Version: 5.3.2

Moleskine Wins in the EndUsed this app for a year and now the new subscription approach has me baffled when you can Wordpress privately for free. Most importantly, using this app made me realise how much I missed journaling by hand; writing with fountain pen, designing pages, lettering and having a finite amount of space on a page to capture things in a meaningful and succinct way. Writing in a page a day Moleskine diary connects better with the creative process and doesn’t cost anything like the Day One subscription. And with a Moleskine I end up with my own completed book at the end of the year without having to pay more money for it to be printed. Day One may suit lots of people but I’ve returned to Moleskine and copied out my Day One entries by hand for a much more enjoyable, creative and cost effective journal experience..Version: 2.5.9

Share option changed for no reasonNot sure why they’ve changed the share options so that you have to choose export now. Annoying when developers change things that are working got no reason. Also it could backup to iCloud for nothing but instead they try to charge for their own cloud backup. Silly. Your response kind of flips your business model and issues back on me as a user though. Responses like yours just make me feel worse about your app if I’m honest. Why not just have a subscription for features we need instead of making us pay for things we don’t need. I’ve also reported a bug ages ago about the extra carriage returns at the end of lists but it’s been ignored..Version: 4.3
