CDC's Milestone Tracker for Negative User Reviews

Doesn’t show milestones listI thought this app would show things a child should be doing at each age level. Instead it just asks a couple basic questions and that’s it. I would love for it to have a checklist..Version: 2.5

Too focused on missing milestonesThis app is helpful to track milestones but is EXTREMELY focused on missing milestones. One improvement in the app could be less of a focus on parental fears and referring parents to a doctor for everything. He’s hitting his milestones by the end of the period, but the format still causes unnecessary worry with some of the prompts when he doesn’t hit every milestone in the time frame. Overall I like being able to track the milestones though..Version: 2.5

Nice idea poorly executedAs a mother of an infant, and as a family doctor, I like the concept of this app. However, in doctor language, the sensitivity of this app is too high and the specificity is too low. If a child is missing any of approximately 10 milestones at each age point, the app labels them as missing milestones and recurrently urges the parent to bring them in for evaluation. My typically developing infant has been labeled as missing milestones at each age cut off, and I suspect 90% of children would. Fortunately, as a doctor, I’m able to recognize that this is a failing of the app, rather than a failing of my child, but a mother without as much medical knowledge could be truly alarmed. It would be far more useful if it used a higher cut off for labeling a child as missing milestones, such as if a child missed multiple milestones at one age group, or was missing milestones of a younger age group. As it is, I would not recommend this to parents. The only reason I gave it two stars instead of one is that it is interesting to see what approximately your child should be learning at their age, as long as you know enough not worry if they are missing one or two skills..Version: 1.1.86

Lacking InteractionI may have been mistaken about the extent of this app when I originally downloaded it. Or maybe, I’m just not using all of the app’s potential features. A friend of mine told me about this app, and that I should download it to track my baby’s development. After looking up information about this app, I was under the impression that it would be more interactive. The app only lists developmental milestones, and ask whether your child has hit them. I could just stick with checking in with the CDC website and keeping track in my Apple Notes app. I really didn’t need to download a new app for that..Version: 2.5

Pass/Fail TestI dislike that not meeting an expectation is an instant fail without taking into account other advanced skills or extenuating circumstances. Potentially ambidextrous child? Automatic fail for lacking a dominant hand. I also dislike that it doesn’t show you the next year up and let you mark off or work towards those goals..Version: 2.1

Redesign killed the appIt used to be a nice and simple app that provided me the information I needed in one click. Now I need to sign up, register my baby, etc. I just deleted the app instead and went to their website where I can read the milestones without all the extra steps..Version: 2.3

Most of the reference videos don’t workMost of the reference videos that have been included to give examples of what each milestone should look like, do not work..Version: 2.1

Unnecessarily Worried - Not Helpful - Inaccurate!I'm actually growing to hate this app! It asks about milestones preemptively (before they've quite reached the age for the given skills to be expected). Then if you mark something "not yet" or "not sure" they tell you early intervention is key and to talk to your doctor AND send you reminders about this and keep asking you to reassess! It's making me really paranoid even though my son is FINE! His pediatrian has no concerns. I work in children's development and do assessments on children regularly. Milestones happen during a RANGE of time and he's well within that normal range for everything. If I didn't know so much about development, this app would be causing me a lot of concern. And even though I know he is FINE, the reminders that I need to reassess and how important early intervention is are stressing me out! For example, he's 13 months and not yet walking. However, he's so close and continung to make great progress on this daily. He also doesn't yet point with one finger (but does with an open hand). Because of this, the app directs me up act right away and directs me to visit cdc.gov/CONCERNED That seems so unnecessary for poor parents who are already stressed out and trying to do what is best..Version: 1.1.85

Wish I could indicate early interventionI like this app, but I wish there was a way to let it know that I have already contacted the dr and have entered early intervention. I feel like it constantly notifies me about my son’s delays. It is stressful enough without the frequent reminders, especially since I have already taken the steps to address it..Version: 1.1.80

No text descriptions of milestonesThere are no text descriptions. I really prefer not to watch videos constantly and feel they take more time and are less informed than text descriptions of milestones..Version: 2.4

Could do moreThe best resource for information on milestones and checking them off and knowing when to talk to your pediatrician. However it’s a very small scope of functionality and I’d only have reason to open the app about once every month or just before appointments. I’d love it if it recommendations on amount of time you should spend doing things like tummy time and other activities and have a timer/tracker for that. Then I would use the app everyday..Version: 2.1

App is not in SpanishLas instrucciones dicen que está en ingles y español pero al bajar la aplicación. Todo aparece en inglés.Version: 1.1.80

They should review the vocabulary usedThey should be more careful about how and when to concern parents. My wife is crying after doing the checklist for our baby when the baby is completely fine.Version: 2.1

Age glitchMy son was born August 28, 2018 I downloaded this app when he turned a month old and put his birth date in and it’s saying he is 2 months old..Version: 1.0.50

No option for adjusted ageGreat concept but not good for preemies as there is no option to enter an adjusted age so that milestones are appropriate for your child..Version: 1.1.34

Good concept... bad executionCan cause unnecessary worry, yes missing milestones should be monitored and intervened if needed but wording needs to be more sensitive and in some cases it might not be as urgent as it is made to seem. At regular appts is fine to discuss..Version: 2.1

App crashesWhen you try to turn off notifications, the app crashes and it’s not letting you turn them off..Version: 1.1.85

It’s okay...The app gives milestones but doesn’t account for the actual windows, your kid may be several months behind but still okay developmentally. They may be different at the beginning of the month than the end of the month. Take everything with a grain of salt... it’s good to acknowledge what your goals are for your child..Version: 1.0.50

Can’t input child’s ageThe app has a glitch that won’t allow me to input the child’s age. It will only let me input January 1, 2020..Version: 1.1.85

Easy to misinterpretI think it’s great that the app helps people understand milestones however, as someone who preforms Ages and Stages assessments is important to know that an assessment like this should be done with a professional so it’s not interpreted incorrectly and making the caregiver more worried than they need to be or filling it out incorrectly When there are concerns. For example, I just completed this and there is a question in the 1 year old that says “does your baby’s say mom, dad and ugh oh” if your child doesn’t say ugh oh (maybe because you don’t say it/cultural differences) and you click NO then this assessment may indicate a speak concern. Maybe your child says other words or sounds instead but this doesn’t give you the option to indicate that. When we perform these assessments, it is Yes No or sometimes and we ask for clarification/ask to expand. If you have concerns speak to your doctor don’t self assess with an app.Version: 1.1.87

Good concept, maybe out of date? The app is easy to use and succinct. I asked my daughters pediatrician about a missed milestone that the app helped me track - she doesn’t turn towards sounds. My pediatrician said that was dropped as a milestone about 8 years ago by the AAP when universal newborn hearing screening was introduced. 8 years ago is a long time. I went back into the app to see when the milestones were last reviewed/updated but couldn’t find a date and source (presumably the CDC). I am going to rely on the AAP’s healthchildren.org website instead so that my pediatrician and I are on the same page..Version: 1.1.86

Videos are GoneThe videos for the 6 month milestones have been removed. Not very helpful..Version: 2.1

Good but needs to build on what they have! The CDC website has so much valuable information. Being a nurse with babies, there is so much potential here that the CDC hasn’t touched. CDC states how breastfeeding stops before 6 months of life (only 22% of mothers continue exclusive BF at this time) because of lack of info, lack of support, and other reasons. This app can help health care providers get parents in touch with breastfeeding support and education. I wish this app would add in the charts for breastmilk storage PDF, safe sleep PDF, how to safely transport breastmilk, ten steps of successful breastfeeding list, etc. (can further expand to provide parents with BF support links like La Leche League, and mental health support, and new family support!!) All of this needs to be incorporated because no parent knows how to navigate the CDC for this information until a healthcare provider shows them. The website is not “patient” friendly, but is “user” friendly. The app can make this “patient” friendly because this can start in the hospital when a baby is born!! Come on CDC, please take my advice! Make this more comprehensive, my patients will love it and then I will become a strong advocate for this in our hospital!!.Version: 2.5

Too aggressiveLists milestones above child’s age!! Made me paranoid til I looked at other sources.Version: 2.0

Notifications are stressfulI like to check which milestones are upcoming for my baby but when I complete the ‘next’ checklist and select some as “not yet” then the app notifies me multiple times that I need to have my child evaluated. The app could be greatly improved by letting people see the upcoming milestones and not sending unnecessary notifications when the child hasn’t actually reached the next milestone age yet despite the checklist completed in advance..Version: 2.1

Height and weightThere needs to be the ability to add a decimal point in this entry.Version: 2.5

Stop conflating gender and sexUsing sex and gender appropriately would help dissociate the two for parents and healthcare providers still living in the Stone Age..Version: 2.2
