Pretext for Negative User Reviews

Lots of bugs, slow loadingThis is a 3 of 5 because the app takes about 10 seconds to load once I click on a document. Also once I have a few other apps open Pretext will lose the place I was at on the page. Other than that it gets the job done . I’ll be looking for less bug filled alternatives though..Version: 1.1.0

It’s okay.It would be hugely better if there wasn’t so much wasted space on the screen. Even in landscape mode, I can’t seem to utilize more than a third of my screen. Why?.Version: 1.0.2

BuggyHas corrupted my files. Have tried using this with both Dropbox and Google drive and now even opening these files through the Files app doesn’t work. Shame. Not letting it touch my iCloud stuff..Version: 1.1.0

Doesn’t work properly any moreThe Save button just doesn’t work..Version: 1.1.0

Lots to like but no option to printI like the app. It’s simple. But there is no option to “print” on my iPhone or iPad. Selecting “share” does not present the opportunity to use the Apple print function. That is a major need for me..Version: 1.1.0

Needs more polishBeing nagged to write a review every time I close a document is unacceptable. Outside of that, the app is generally unintuitive (settings menu under the share icon?) and doesn’t even support common markdown extensions like strike through.Version: 1.0.3

CrashesRandomly crashes when opening source files..Version: 1.0.2

Dark mode IAPs: an accessibility perspectiveFor photosensitive users, dark modes aren't just an aesthetics choice. For these users, especially those looking at their devices all day, dark modes aren't just about being pretty. Dark modes are fundamentally required to make the app useable at all. Dark modes are an *accessibility* feature. They make the app useable in the same way that AssistiveTouch or VoiceOver do. Would you charge more for accessibility features? No. That would be terrible. Dark mode is an accessibility feature in exactly the same way other features are. Night Shift, True Tone, and the lesser known Reduce White Point aren't enough for some users: dark modes are the only way for them to use apps they can look at for hours at a time. Furthermore, some users have "floaters" in their vision caused by fluids shifting in their eyes. They cannot comfortably use black on white UIs as a result. Dark modes are the main way users with these floaters can interact with their devices. All that said: I realise that app developers need to make money. That's fine, really! I work as a developer myself. I understand. But charging for an accessibility feature is the wrong way to do it. I'd be happier making a *donation*, and getting nothing, than I am having to pay to configure the app to be useable in a way that doesn't cause me eyestrain and discomfort. Dark mode is an accessibility feature. I shouldn't have to pay to make the app accessible..Version: 1.0.1

Mostly GreatCan we please allow creating documents in memory and choosing the save location later? Like how TextEdit on macOS works. Allowing these unsaved documents to persist after quitting the app would be amazing too (also like how TextEdit works).Version: 1.1.0

Doesn’t want to load markdownMostly OK but doesn’t seem to want to recognise the .md file extension via google drive / file app. Which is problematic for editing markdown on-the-go when working with systems that require the specific extension..Version: 1.0.2

Does exactly what I want but constantly freezesSometimes the app will just freeze whenever I open an empty or new note..Version: 1.1.0

DisappointingNo preview and syntax highlighting is dodgy: isn’t highlighting bullet lists when indented. Expected better from an app that is expecting people to pay money to change the theme..Version: 1.1.0

Good app, one awful bug/issueI like the app and it does a great job of making quick edits and whatnot on my phone. The issue I have is that every time I change or even open a file on my phone that is formatted in plaintext, the line breaks on my computer file all go away. Not sure if this is a bug or I’m doing something on my end, but it makes the app unusable for me unless I’m starting a file on my phone..Version: 1.0.2

Whole point of downloading itWas to be able to create .md files on the fly in GDrive or locally. Gives me “error cannot open file” every time I try. Very disappointed, uninstalled..Version: 1.0.2

Close button does not workThe close button on the top menu bar does nothing. This should ideally save the file and terminate the app. Please fix ASAP.Version: 1.1.0

Can't open every plain text fileI have a plain text file with an unusual extension (sql) imported via Airdrop. The app doesn't let me open it. Also, there is no contact address provided where I could have asked for support..Version: 1.1.0

UnresponsiveUnresponsive on load. Documents don’t load up properly and often a force app restart is needed. Hopefully this is fixed soon..Version: 1.1.0

The extra payment doesn’t workI bought the in-app purchase and it unfortunately doesn’t work :( Hope this can be fixed! Lovely and intuitive app outside of that error.Version: 1.1.0

Seems great, but seems to choke on external changesI had a markdown document I was working on from my desktop, saved and closed it, and opened it on Pretext and added to it. Seemed great. When I reopened it on the desktop, the changes didn’t seem to write back to the file I had opened. Closing the app, I worked on the document more from the desktop. Re-opened the document in pretext from where I had saved it on my server from the desktop, and now none of the changes I had added on the desktop weren’t showing in the app..Version: 1.1.0

Doesn’t work with iPad Magic KeyboardCant use the app anymore as it refuses to work properly with the iPad magic keyboard. Most annoying thing is the return key no longer works. Have to use the screen keyboard instead. Moving to the drafts app instead until this is fixed..Version: 1.1.0

A Solution I’ve Been Looking For but FlawedI use Pretext as a note taking app for OneDrive. There are no note taking apps I could find that natively interact with OneDrive, but Pretext does via the Apple Files interface. This app does the trick most of the time but crashes when I try to load especially large plain text files (1000+ lines seem to break it). That is very strange considering these are just ~30 kb files we’re talking about. I hope this gets fixed soon. Anyhow, thanks for your work on this!.Version: 1.0.2

Review nagging won’t stopI’ve been prompted to rate the app no fewer than three times in two minutes. Knocking off a star for that. Knocking off another star for the fact that you can’t change the font at all. Otherwise, things seem to work pretty well. People who are complaining here about having to spend 99 whole cents for dark mode should seriously reevaluate things..Version: 1.0.2

1 for constant review harassmentLiterally have been prompted 6 times to review despite installing it 10 minutes ago..Version: 1.1.0

Great For simple file viewing. Needs search functionPlease add Text Search functionality within file.Version: 1.1.0

Not workingI can’t use third party storage providers.Version: 1.1.0

Doesnt detect the return key on an apply keyboardJust that - it doesnt detect the return key. The return key works on the virtual keyboard just fine but on the apply keyboard, it does nothing..Version: 1.1.0

Forced review writing is a bad first impressionI’ve been prompted to write a review multiple times in the first 10 minutes of having this app installed. I don’t even object to the nag. But at least gate it after I’ve been using the app for some time....Version: 1.1.0

OneDriveOpening a text file stored in OneDrive works fine. But the “Done” button does not save the changes. There is no other obvious “Save” button. Why doesn’t Apple provide a “Notepad” simple text editor? This shouldn’t be this difficult..Version: 1.1.0

Arbitrary file extension limitationsCan only create .md or .txt files. Can edit some others but why can’t I edit .css or .org or .html? I can edit .bib and .sh at least but is there some iOS limitation where you can’t just let me open arbitrary files as text?.Version: 1.0.3

Great app, one flawThis app is exactly what i need. I was basically searching for a notepad equivilant for iPadOS, and this app did not dissapoint. It's basically notepad (as I said) but with a few extra features that don't get in the way but are nice to have. Overall, the app is simple, but well made. My only issue with this app (which I hope gets resolved quickly) is ever since I updated to iOS 15 the enter key on my keyboard doesn't work in PreText. I've had to paste a newline in every time I want to go down a line..Version: 1.1.0

All this app can do is 'write' plain text & NOTHING else . . .(Wish I could give only half a star): Yes, this is the free version, & honestly all I wanted was an app that writes pure text w/ no HTML/other convoluted markup. Yes, it allows BOLD, italics, & other mods, but who really needs that in plain-jane pure text? A nice feature would be the ability to search a fairly large saved file, but, you can NOT do that w/ this app: oh no, that would add waayyy too much convenience! Anyone know of a plain-jane app that writes pure text AND allows the ability to search? TIA!.Version: 1.1.0

Erratic editingPress and hold dragging of cursor is erratic, making quick edits of existing text mostly unusable. The only workaround is to touch exactly where you want to place the cursor. If you're off by a single character then try again because you can't hold to move the cursor location without the text scrolling wildly causing the cursor to end up somewhere completely unexpected..Version: 1.0.3

Nice app, but a few weaknessesFirst, slow to sync with backends like Nextcloud. A few times I’ve even lost my edits. Also, I hate it when apps constantly nag me to leave a review. Ruins the experience..Version: 1.0.3

Terrible crashes whole iPhoneTry to load 1.5 MB plain text file from iCloud, crashes and every app on iphone is then TOTALLY unresponsive ---- DO NOT GET.Version: 1.1.0

No easy access to markdown formatting optionsIf this particular app is designed for markdown then it must provide a markdown formatting options toolbar above the keyboard..Version: 1.0.1

Great utilityPretext is a very useful text and markdown editor when you want something clean and simple. Occasionally I find myself wishing it had a search-and-replace feature but that doesn’t keep me from appreciating its utility. January 29, 2020: I reduced the review to three stars because it has started putting up a review prompt every couple minutes. Hopefully that will get fixed and I can give it back the lost stars..Version: 1.1.0

Doesn’t open markdown filesDoesn’t open markdown files from google drive. So not really a markdown editor....Version: 1.1.0

Scary behaviors with OneDriveSometimes opening a file and closing it causes it to disappear from the file list. Refreshing the file list makes it reappear, but there is perceived data loss. Also, I have had sync conflicts from this app that caused weird split versions of the same file with appended numbers. Doesn’t happen working with OneDrive in other platforms or apps. Edit: down to one star. I just tried to save a file five times (including an app quit in between) and it never propagated. Need to make an exit plan to a new solution..Version: 1.1.0

Can’t connect cloud drivesNot possible to connect to Dropbox, Onerdrive etc..Version: 1.1.0

Missing essential features, bugsI hate to review badly, this app is free after all and it is neat. But for a real markdown editor, it’s missing tons of stuff: - open file from Dropbox, app crashes - Cannot recognize lists as typed (have to tap on line, wait for popup to show, then hit “list”) - One “real” recognized lists, not quick way to indent or un-indent And some other issues where you type markdown and expect the app to “play ball” and do the right thing (it doesn’t). But it is neat. It highlights. It has a cool markdown link insert tool. Spellcheck works as expected. Some bugs: Hitting list button on existing list ads more dashes (does not needs, already has dash bullet). Not as important, but I’ve hit some rendering bugs. App opens document but keyboard area is blank white and does nothing. Or text area is cut in half but keyboard is present. Undo bar doesn’t appear, etc..Version: 1.0.2

Text width?Pretext does not use the whole width of the screen, just a small sliver down the middle which causes much wrapping and makes structured text documents uneditable. Why is it so hard to find a decent text editor for the iPad?.Version: 1.1.0
