Skritter: Write Japanese for Positive User Reviews

Good app but price is too bigFor me it’s 5/5 app ,but 15 dollars for one month is too much for cis region and not only for cis . Also I think you should make option to choose word and have option to test only that words that you’ve chosen ,this also would be a helpful function.Version: 3.5.4

ExcellentReally the best resource for learning kanji, the big letters and stroke repetition really help the memorisation even if you don’t actually want to learn to write.Version: 3.7.4

ExcellentLoving the app so far. I know writing the kanji is so helpful in remembering them vs just grinding flashcards. I’m excited to keep using the app. I do have a feature request. Seems like it might be a bit cumbersome to make though. Was wondering if there might be any plan to search for a specific kanji in a deck. Would love to be able to search for the kanji I’m learning on WaniKani and practice writing them here. Great app!.Version: 3.10.4

Really helpful! This app has been incredible! I’ve finally started getting the hang of kanji thanks to this app, and being able to practice writing is really helpful for remembering the characters. This is much better then the textbook I bought, and I will definitely be recommending this to my friends!.Version: 3.5.6

Fantastic appTruly awesome app for practicing kanji, and it’s the only one I’m aware of that lets you practice the stroke order. Feature request for developers: please add WaniKani API integration! It’d be amazing to have Skritter automatically follow my WaniKani progress, it’s a bit tedious to have to add new vocabulary words manually every time I learn a new one in WaniKani..Version: 3.9.5

Very well done!Whoops I’m dumb, anyways it’s actually very well done I just totally forgot the difference between two hiraganas, anyways again very well done I’m actually learning from this which is awesome considering other apps teach barely anything, here you learn words, hiragana, kanji and even more.Version: 3.5.1

A must for learning to write JapaneseI've been using Skritter to learn Chinese and Japanese writing since 2009, and there's nothing like it..Version: 3.10.3

Excellent!I’m a very tactile learner. Being able to write kana and kanji has helped with my writing but also with my vocabulary in general. The subscription is a little pricey, but the app is really well done and very effective in what it does. After trying various apps, this is probably my favourite, and the one to which I am most likely to keep a subscription..Version: 3.4.1

CleanThis is great! The app is easy to use and layout is presented well. The Japanese sounds have been improve and the writing is more responsive. Could you update the Chinese app in the same way?.Version: 3.1.5

Um... yeahThe fact that this app is so interactive is awesome. Learning to read and write the characters is going to be so incredibly helpful if you plan on immersing yourself in the language. Totally recommending this..Version: 3.6.1

SkritterIt’s a good app for different people to learn and write Japanese. Even if you are a beginner or have a bit of knowledge you can use the app. I didn’t know a thing about Japanese by know I know quite a bit so I can watch my favourite anime’s with knowing a bit of what they are saying and I can speak to my friends who speak fluent Japanese so I know what their saying. Overall, really good 5 stars.Version: 3.6.4

AmazingKanji stroke recognition is good, and it helped me remember words so much more efficient. I can also practice the vocab for each of my textbooks which is so convenient. Although, in the my words list, you can only search using kana, so if you dont remember a word, you have to look through the whole list. Also great because the subscription also applies to the chinese version and it has the same benefits..Version: 3.8.5

Great app for beginnersI love this app. It’s been very helpful for someone just starting to learn Japanese. 10/10 100% recommend especially since even though I procrastinate and don’t like learning I was able to complete so many sessions , it felt like I was playing a game.Version: 3.5.6

A pretty great studying resource, but..I really wish that instead of unlocking more lessons through a subscription, you could do a one-time payment. There’s just no way for me to justify paying $8/month for an app, even if it’s as good for studying as this is. Aside from that, I appreciate the selection of free lessons that are available. I think for a completely free selection, there’s a good amount to get someone started. The settings for recognizing text (snapping to strokes vs free strokes) are a huge deal for me and I appreciate the ability to change them without hassle. The stroke recognition + free stroke writing (instead of snapping), with hirigana katakana and some kanji all in the same app is exactly what I was looking for, and this one functions smoother than other similar ones I’ve used. This would be a perfect app if there simply was a one-time full unlock purchase for some of the later lessons (mainly the more advanced ones, such as ones for the N5-N1 etc) instead of a monthly subscription. I wouldn’t be opposed to paying if it was a one-time fee to unlock all current lessons/future lessons, or even paying by the lesson (i.e. pay $1 per set)..Version: 3.8.4

Great for Advanced/Specialist StudyRenewing my knowledge of kanji is very accessible with Skritter. My motivation has snowballed..Version: 3.9.8

I am remembering them!Great app for kanji. If you’re serious about remembering them there is no better tool..Version: 3.5.5

Very effectiveGreat way to study for the JLPT with ready made desks in app.Version: 3.9.6

All in One experienceI was using a combination of Benkyō Pro, Robokana, & KanaDrill, but Skritter replaced them all. Discovering that I could download the vocab & kanji “cards” from the language text books I was working through sealed the deal for me. 👍👍.Version: 3.8.6

Amazing app with a couple small caveatsI Really Love this app! I have learned so much in a short amount of time thanks to it. I love that you can pick which decks to learn from and that many popular notebooks are included. I also really enjoy the writing experience, and the testing and time attack options. Tiny tweaks: - please create a streak freeze or other way to restore your streak so that it’s not as easy to lose your streak if you forget to practice one day. - for the review option I would like to be able to re review the words I got wrong within that session, similar to test mode. I’m also not clear why both modes exist but prefer the functionality of test mode. Thank you!.Version: 3.10.10

Learn to write hiragana katakana & kanjiEven though the app tries to get you to be a paid monthly subscriber, you can skip and first start learning your hiragana, katakana, and beginning kanji decks for free. After this, if you really want to get serious, pay a monthly fee and learn the more intense kanji. The app says that any premium kanji you learn, you can forever keep, even after you unsubscribe. Overall, this is an awesome app and compliments apps such as Pimsleur which helps with conversational language speaking. 頑張って!(Ganbatte!).Version: 3.8.6

Great appI love the app! I am Japanese and my whole family speaks it, this definitely helps!.Version: 3.7.4

Best stroke recognition but bad SRS(Tl;DR is below) First, the 3 good points I like about this app: (And then I’ll get to my gripe) 1. Best stroke recognition algorithm bar none , it always manages to grade how I wrote kanji. That’s nice cause one of the hardest things about practicing kanji with pen and paper is judging if you drew the character so it looks correct and so it was done with correct stroke order. 2. I love how with one subscription price, you get both Chinese and Japanese character apps. 3. I love how the design of the app is simple and it’s very plug and play. But my major gripe is the SRS: As others have said, the app doesn’t seem to review earlier cards quite frequently enough for me to remember. This app needs a more customizable SRS to it, more like Anki or most other Flashcards apps. My workaround with this has been to use the grab-bag of kanji “continuous” mode for an additional 15-20 minutes but those kanji seem to be in random order. (If they aren’t I’ll be pleasantly surprised. ) TLDR: great stroke recognition but my forgetful brain aches for a better and more customizable SRS.Version: 3.7.4

Skritter doesn’t rest, they’re continually reaching for expanded functionality and innovationWhen Skritter started, they led a simpler playing field. With tech advances, it seemed other were innovating where Skritter rested. But all is most definitely not idle under the “hood”. They’ve been re- designing and innovating for years now in what must be a daunting task. And to see the betas, they’re been growing leaps and bounds in abilities to come..Version: 3.4.0

Amazing new updatesI’ve had Skritter for a long time now and I thought it was good before. But now with the new platform and options for studying, it’s gotten so much better beyond my wildest dreams! My favourite is testing just the words that I get incorrect - so effective. I highly recommend this app..Version: 3.10.3

Love it!There are so many skills involved in learning Japanese. Skritter is great writing practice and can be done with 5 minutes or 50. Thank you!.Version: 3.5.1

Good For StudyingIf your looking for an app to help you study the stuff you are forgetting, you’ve come to the right place. Skritter keeps track of what you have forgotten and test you on it until you can recall it first try..Version: 3.8.4

Very good but needs some tweaksIt is excellent in some ways, especially the Apple Pencil recognition. There are some quirks though, in particular the fact that despite having JLPT decks it is not really adequate for studying for the JLPT exam: in the JLPT N5 deck (and any other JLPT deck) despite the words are level appropriate the kanji aren’t: it introduces straight away advanced kanjis, even from N1 level, that normally one wouldn’t be expected if not years later. This makes it very hard to use for exam preparation, or to use it at all unless one is already intermediate/advanced..Version: 3.9.3

Best way to learn kanji hands downI've been using this app since its very early days (2011 I think) and nothing has helped me learn kanji better. It's fun too and even if you don't care about being able to write, this will still set you down the right path.Version: 3.10.10

An awesome Japanese learning app!I love that this app teaches Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, and has lots of awesome study materials. The mnemonic images for Kana are so darn cool, and helped me remember them very quickly. Excited to learn to read and write Japanese now that I’ve found Skritter!.Version: 3.1.5

Reliable, solid app which helped me learn a lot of words five different ways.A built-in link to a good online Japanese dictionary (like in chinese skritter ) would take it to five stars in my opinion..Version: 3.9.3

Helpful, but issues syncingNice app, an easy way to get writing practice in when I don’t have my notebook. I like how it teaches characters, and the SRS is helpful to make sure I’m reviewing what I need to know. The only issue is that it’s not always syncing up words that I’ve learned or starred between my iPhone and iPad. I do most of my studying on my iPad, but if I open my iPhone sometimes it will say that I haven’t learned words that I had learned. The learned kanji issue seems to mostly be gone after the latest update, but it still won’t sync starred words..Version: 3.3.4

Great for that extra reinforcementI don’t know if it’s the best learning approach for a brand new Japanese learner but I have found it to be very helpful. A lot of people just focus on reading comprehension and memorizing kanji readings, but the ability to write kanji really adds to my confidence that I actually “know” the kanji and don’t need to rely on seeing it to recognize it. The app does what I need it to do but it could really shine with a few additional features. - Number of upcoming reviews would be helpful to make sure you pace yourself - My words tab could be enhanced with color coding, or some way to identify leeches/problematic cards Overall I enjoy the app and have been using it daily as a part of my studies.Version: 3.6.4

Practically necessary, however there isn’t an offline modeThis app has been key to passing the N5 and N4. My only gripe is that the app has no offline mode. It seems like I read about it somewhere, but it won’t even load..Version: 3.9.9
