Mio - Speech Therapy Toddler for Negative User Reviews

Misleading and not useful for younger kidsThis app says it uses facial and sound recognition which it absolutely does not. When our child just looks at or even points the phone or iPad away, it still gives her all the stars and congratulates her ‘good work’. It is maybe helpful for children of maybe 7 or older who have good focusing skills but younger or easily bored children will get nothing but false positives. I wish the creators were honest and didn’t advertise that it does something that it doesn’t. I was persuaded to pay for the subscription solely based on the fact that it would help our child using positive reinforcement not giving her a prize for little or no effort. Very disappointed..Version: 3.4.1

Repeated staff, no need to purchaseRepeated staff, no need to purchase, just use the free one to entertain kids. So regret to purchase this App, feeling ripped off..Version: 3.5

Waste of moneyThe child they have showing the sounds doesn’t even speak the same language. How can my kid learn how to pronounce things when the person showing them also is not? You have to pay 10 dollars just to do anything on the app. Save your money..Version: 3.9.5

Kept crashingMy daughter wasn’t able to get through a lesson because the app kept crashing..Version: 3.9.6

Cancel my subscriptionI just purchased this app yesterday and only wanted to try this app but I was charged $49.95 for a yearly subscription. Please cancel my plan because I did not want to sign up for the yearly subscription..Version: 3.9.5

The idea is good, but it doesn’t do what is says. The app says it uses the camera to check the movement of the mouth and uses the microphone to check pronunciation, but it was giving my kid stars and accolades for doing it completely wrong and not doing it all. I double-checked that I had given permission to use camera and mic - both were turned on. I aimed the camera at the sky at one point and it still acted like I was nailing the exercise. If it actually checked pronunciation and mouth movement, this would be a pretty awesome app. Three stars because it does give good ideas for speech and mouth exercises..Version: 3.3.1

It doesn’t let me to subscribe! Not sure why, but it doesn’t let me to subscribe monthly..Version: 3.8.2

Not a substitute for speech therapyI was looking for an app that would scaffold CV, VC and CVC word shapes. This is NOT IT! There is no audio or facial recognition. You could use it for word imitation but the ranges of motor movement imitation to full 3 syllable words seems sketchy. If it did the things it promised this would be a much better app. The pictures are outdated and not scaffolded well. Parents- don’t rely on this in place of speech therapy..Version: 3.6

From a speech therapist: DO NOT DOWNLOADI am a licensed speech language pathologist and YOU SHOULD NOT GET THIS APP!!!! This app uses non speech oral motor exercise (i.e., a technique that does not require a child to produce a sound) which are unethical and SHOULD NOT BE DONE. There is countless articles and literature that state explicitly why these exercise are counterproductive and not an appropriate treatment for speech sound errors! Just google “non speech oral motor exercises” and the top results will be articles discussing why these strategies are not recommended. Do not fool yourself into thinking moving your jaw around, blowing, or sticking out your tongue will improve your child’s articulation or speech production. If you’re working on imitation skills, fine go ahead, BUT DO NOT USE THESE EXERCISES FOR ARTICULATION OR PHONOLOGICAL THERAPY!!! Furthermore, the app is highly inaccurate! It wasn’t even directed at my face and it gave me credit. This could help your child practice things INACCURATELY and could further impede your practice. Go to a licensed speech therapist that does their research and stay away from apps like this!.Version: 3.6

Doesn’t work, only 2 free levelsIt doesn’t really listen or follow your child’s face, it has a timer and awards points either way. My child is three and quickly figured it out and stopped interacting with the app. There are only two free levels which took my toddler less than five minutes to complete then it’s locked and wants you to pay so it’s really not worth it..Version: 3.8.4

Not for Americans/English speakersOnce you purchase this, you have an option for children to copy animal and vehicle noises. However, these noises are not what Americans or native English speakers say-there is no connection to the pictures. We say that ducks “quack” and the app says something like gwa. We have lions “Roar” and the app has them brr with rolled tongue. Birds don’t tweet or cheep, sheep don’t baaaa, it’s just all wrong. The sirens and planes are also different. And yes, I have it set to English but it clearly was not designed the way we teach our kids. I suspect it was dubbed. The demonstrating children’s mouths don’t sync up, which is one of the reasons I think that. So if you have a delayed speaker who has already learned animal and vehicle sounds and just needs encouragement to expand, this will (and did) confuse them. I understand the need for kids to say these sounds but they should be sounds that match the language. The only thing that was cute was the camera that showed the learner in order to watch themselves copy what they saw. My kids liked looking at themselves, but would not make any of the noises. The only one was the train, which was similar to the sound they are used to. Everything else was off. This app also does not give you the weekly sub option unless you do it in advance. While using the free section, only yearly pops up, so beware. I was unaware of a weekly option or that’s what I would have picked. Then I would have just cancelled. But with a year sub, I need a refund. This is not what was advertised and is not useful. You can’t ask a child to make a lion noise when they’ve been taught Roar and then have it be a rolled r Brrrr. As it is, I don’t wish to confuse kids who already know the animal sounds and just need word encouragement. I subbed to this app this morning and wish a refund, or not to be charged if I have not been. In my state, we have three days for a refund so I’m posting to mark my request. This might be a fun app for children who understand and connect those sounds to the pictures. My kids got bored and confused so we never got farther than that section..Version: 3.8.4

OddIt doesn’t seem to track actual sounds very well and has multiple pop ups of the information every lesson. Great idea, poorly executed.Version: 3.9.4
