TroutRoutes: Fly Fishing Maps for Negative User Reviews

Great tool, a few bugsFantastic tool for finding new water, access points, trails, etc. Very useful in this regard. A few bugs I’ve noticed: - when you go to upload photos to a location, the app does nothing when you tap “gallery” or “camera”, so you are unable to add photos. - maybe this is my phone, but it’s newer and has storage space, so i don’t know, but I can’t download streams to offline storage. When you go to download them, tapping “download” does nothing and the stream is not filed in offline storage..Version: 4.7.5

Incorrect access dataIt does a good job of showing you rivers. However, a LOT of the “access” points it shows as public land is NOT public access. I have to compare the land this shows to OnX hunt and determine if the land is public or private. So overall, it basically just highlights rivers and streams. I’m not sure how they determine the level of fishery, but some of the streams it outlines as class 1 or 2 are defiantly not good fishing spots..Version: 4.7.10

No cell service, no mapUnless I’m missing something (possible), it doesn’t work without cell service. I’ve got the pro version and when cell service goes out, which is very often in these areas the maps don’t load. Do maps need to be saved or downloaded somehow? Thanks for adding NC. Mike.Version: 4.4.3

Can’t use without payingI was so excited about using this app, I signed up and everything… Almost ready to dive in only to hit a pay wall and cannot use the app without paying the fee (one day it was $40 for the year and today it was $60? Don’t know what the deal with that is). What’s the point in having different memberships but the only way to access the app is to pay a subscription? Again I was extremely excited about this only to lead to disappointment. Am I making a mistake somewhere in the process? Can I get the membership off my screen to see if I even enjoy the app before offloading my cc info? This is the first time I have ever written a review on anything so I hope I can find some help. Thanks!.Version: 4.7.6

Inaccurate dataI live in Upper Michigan. I was curious if this app would have any useful information about the areas I fish here but this half of the state is so rural I wasn't optimistic. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of blue lines on the map when I first opened it up however upon closer examination I see that streams, rivers, and lakes that do NOT contain trout are also marked as trout. Plus there are several fly shops in the area and none are shown in the app. No way I would pay for bad data like this, however if the programmers would like to pay me I can help clean things up and make it accurate..Version: 4.0.6

Seems okay but data not up to dateReviewing this for areas that I fish and some streams are not properly labeled, or labeled at all. Even with NYS stocking reports this app doesn’t show stocking streams. Could be a decent tool for guides but would never want this to be up to date and available to the masses. Would decimate trout streams Developers can’t read. I understand you have NYS stocking but you don’t have nearly all of the publicly available info. Never said you didn’t have some..Version: 4.7.12

F canada!Nothing for Canadians… enjoy.Version: 4.5.2

Why? Just why?I was looking forward to using this app. I did know going that if I wanted to use the full spectrum of this app that I’d have to pay for it. What I did not know is that I would not be able to use it at all without paying for it. I can’t get past the ad where it tells you “all the benefits of Pro”. Why can’t I look through the app to see if I actually want to use it or not before paying?.Version: 4.7.10

Seems ok if you live in an area listed in their mapsThis seems like a great idea, but is very limited in the areas it covers. Need to have more geographical areas covered. I would suggest expanding to Canada, specifically SW Alberta and Southern BC, both home to some of the best fly fishing locations in the world..Version: 4.2.0

Canada!!!!!App looks great but was wishing to see maps for Canada.Version: 4.7.9

Looks good but no data for MarylandI downloaded the app and proceeded to try out the basic version. The tour feature is a little buggy and unfortunately there’s no data for my home state of Maryland. At that, I saw no reason to subscribe at $40 per year or retain the app on my phone. If data for Maryland is added and the price comes down to about $0.99 per month, then I might try the app again. Until then, I wish the developers all the best. When fully developed, I think this app will prove to be truly indispensable..Version: 4.4.6

Should expand areaI was excited to use this app but it doesn’t work in Canada I suggest expanding it here, a lot more people will use it..Version: 4.5.0

Canada!!Seems like a good app but has no Canada content.Version: 4.5.1

Not a complete waste, but not worth the price.I used TroutRoutes premium as a primary way to plan my last fly-fishing trip. Here are some of the pros and cons. Pros: - a good starting place to highlight campgrounds, hikes, streams, creeks, and rivers - good information on water levels if a dam is further up river - multiple layer maps to help you determine the difficulty of accessing a point in the river Now the bad: - inaccurate stream info. At one point the River I was fishing— Watauga in western North Carolina— went way farther than the map suggested. Further up there was a public park that you could access the river that locals said was amazing to fish— wasn’t even included on the app. This leads me to… - The parking suggestions are a joke. You CANNOT rely on this information. I probably wasted 2-3 hours PER DAY driving to a “parking spot” that had signs everywhere saying you couldn’t park there. - inaccurate class information. Different classes were given than my state wildlife gave - contains little information, tips, suggestions, or locations that quick google search couldn’t give you. Ultimately, you’re better off using the free version to start your trip, but only if you’d like to find smaller, less popular streams— double edged sword may be that they are unpopular for a reason. Even popular rivers contain missing or inaccurate information on an area. Save your money and buy a few flies at a local fly shop. Get tips and info from them..Version: 4.7.12

What a joke!Any creek that might be a creek is listed. You want to drive to a seasonal dry creek? This is your app. Want to have a viable small trout gem next to irrigation ditches, this is your app. Want to query a class 1 on your area…nope you see all the noise. It’s a Topo with notes and sketchy evaluations. I know my area…this app plain doesn’t. Grab the free version for a Topo, but don’t count on it to put you on great fishing. You may end up trying to euro nymph dirt. Deleted the app: my observations were regarding Washington state. Way too many rivers that were a “2” but normally dry and only flow as rain drainage was immense. 1/10 rivers felt correctly rated. The GIS info is publicly available so the rating system needs to be accurate to establish value. It is severely broken and thus the app is useless..Version: 4.7.0

Needs workI downloaded this to teat it out. For my state, it’s missing a LOT of information. The class system doesn't match our state classification and some waters that are higher class were listed as lower class in the app. What’s bizarre is that our state has all of this data available for free in GIS format and even has a free website with better info than what’s in the app. The developers should have been able to easily pull all the GIS biomass data from the state and include it. There was a ton of public access missing. This looks like someone just pulled a bunch of data from somewhere and tried to customize it without actually knowing anything about the areas..Version: 4.1.1

When were states like SC and GA added?I’m guessing this is better in some states than others. I’m not sure it’s of use to us in SC. I’m not seeing anything really different than what I already know and I’m seeing things missing. I’m hoping I haven’t been charged yet. If it improves for SC I’d be willing to pay for it, but much improvement is needed. North, GA could also use some work..Version: 4.2.0

Wanted to love it but nowhere near complete for WVSo the functionality and features are great. However I am in WV and it is inaccurate and some streams are missing which is honestly ridiculous considering the WVDNR has their own public mapping of the streams and stocking zones. If you’re going to charge a premium for an app at least make sure all the free information at your fingertips is on there and accurate. I don’t mind paying for it at all but it has to be accurate to what the WVDNR has or it is useless since this is what is used in WV. By all means have the full stream on there but the WVDNR stocking should be on there and all the stocked streams should be there..Version: 4.7.4

Flow charts and elevationsHard to pull up flow charts which is a huge part for me purchasing, it should be an easier button. I keep tapping my screen and can’t get to it all the time consistent at all. Also, the elevation gain or loss is an accurate to the river. I’m looking for, takes me somewhere far away. I need everything easy to toggle through..Version: 4.7.8
