✗ Long Time UserHaving used MacFamily Tree for many years to undertake my family history research I have found MacFamily Tree to be a very good program. I currently use this program inconjunction with Family Tree Maker 2019. Whilst the interface is very good and for the most part easy to use MacFamily Tree falls down in two areas that I consider important for the serious genealogist. They are the handling of sources and citations and the export of GEDCOM files. Whilst for the best part the sources and citations section enables the user to record sources and citations the current way that MacFamily Tree handles sources is far from inuitive and if you are coming from another software program such as Family Tree Maker or Roots Magic it takes a lot of effort to work out where to put what information such that any report or GEDCOM export outputs the source and ciation in a format that experienced genealogist would be expecting. It lack the abilty to create templates for sources and citations to help with the process. The handling of GEDCOM exports and imports is not done particularly well with some fields not adhering to the GEDCOM standard and as such an exported GEDCOM file will throw up a number of errors. Interestingly when I exported a MacFamily Tree file to GEDCOM the re-imported the GEDCOM file into MacFamily Tree not all of the information exported was re-imported. Of particular concern was the MacFamily Tree field "Middle Name" which is not exported as a GEDCOM standard field that can be read by other programs, both desktop and online, so if this field is used when exported to a GEDCOM file the data in this field is not readable by other genealogy programs. The support for MacFamily Tree is generally reasonable when you log a problem but is virtually no existent when logging a feature request. The user manual whilst reasonably comprehensive falls well short in some areas and does not measure up to some other genealogy programs. If the source, citations and GEDCOM export features were better addressed I would rate the program 4-5 stars as it is the only genealogy program for Mac that makes full use of the Mac GUI capabilities..Version: 9.1.1
✗ DisappointingSpending money on a software that has so many issue. So disappointed of my purchase, that app stops responding when you try to merge places. When you try to merge people, it keeps the two different icons, but say it's the same person so some of my ancestors end up with 2 mums and 2 dads, who are the same person. So many bugs in this app, that I'm looking for another software. A better one..Version: 9.0.12
