Bookshelf: Reading Tracker for Negative User Reviews

User FeaturesIt would be great if you had a feature on the user’s profile of an actual bookcase that visually showed how many books there read. It could be filtered and customized with options like by rating, date finished, author, etc. Nothing complicated but it would bring in new users from the book community..Version: 2.12.3

Frustrated! This was such a great app which I used to keep track of what books my little 12 year old bookworm was reading (105 in the last couple of months…). I opened it today and it told me it had been updated - fine - but also that I’d reached my limit of 25 books in the free version! Argh! So now I have 105 books that I somehow need to move to another list to keep track. Should have stuck with a paper notebook, which no one can decide to start charging you for!.Version: 2.9

Kinda misleadingI like the user-friendly nature of this app, and I enjoy the timed sessions and how it keeps track of your progress, but the fact that you have to pay to keep track of your reading for more than three days a week is annoying. And the stats portion punishes makes you look bad for not marking down that you’re reading. I guess I’ll just stick to goodreads now, but I did like this app at first. Wish everything wouldn’t be trapped behind the paywall..Version: 2.13.3

Amazing UI/UX but laggyI’ve tried A LOT. This is by far the best in UI/UX. Obviously it’s not perfect yet. It’s still very laggy. For instance, when you write notes anywhere, you cannot scroll to where you’re typing… Keyboard hides it so you don’t know what you’re typing. Very excited for the other tools that you’re working on though!.Version: 2.13.2

Lost everythingI really loved this app and would use it every time I read, logging my hours and progress. I liked seeing my stats and how my skills had improved over time. But that took time that I can now not get back because it freaking glitched out or something and now all of my data is gone and my year subscription too. I had tried to look up a new book to add to my wishlist, but when I did it didn’t show anything. Then I tried looking up books I had already added and still, absolutely no results. So I uninstalled the app to see if that would help, but of course everything was gone when I reinstalled. I’m so disappointed. I still had until May of next year for my subscription as well but there’s nowhere I can sign in or anything. And still no results for the books I looked up..Version: 2.10.6

Useful but hidden affiliate linksI switched from Goodreads as I didn’t want to support an Amazon-owned platform, so was somewhat surprised to find large ‘Buy Book’ links on book entries that are in fact affiliate links to Amazon. There is zero reference to this in the app’s privacy policy or ToS, no declaration and so clearly in breach of GDPR, ASA and FTC regulations. Will look for somewhere more open about their business practices..Version: 2.12.2

Glitch that stops me from adding new booksI was loving this app but now whenever I try to add a new book it says no books found despite it being a very well known book. Please fix this so that I can keep on using this great app!.Version: 2.10.7

A Few SuggestionsI really like this app, but I think there are a few things that could be improved! 1. Reading Goal Counter. When adding your reading goal in for the year, you have to hit the + or - icon and cannot type it in so if you’re goal is more than 10 this takes forever. I want to read 100 books this year, but I don’t want to tap through that many times. 2. Filters & Tags. A big thing for me in being able to tag books with custom tags such as emotions, themes/genres, tropes, etc. Right now you can only filter by Title, Author, Rating, and Reading Status. Implementing tags would be amazing! Other than that I really love the Cards feature and I think this app has great potential!.Version: 2.6.3

Was good until they updatedIt was free before they updated it to only allow you to have 20 books before having to subscribe.Version: 2.7.3

Syncing to goodreads doesn’t work.It says it’s connected to my goodreads account but my goodreads library still isn’t showing up on my app. Also, it’s be great if it could sync with my kindle account too and automatically pull in my notes and highlights..Version: 1.5

Partially usefulUseful to log which books were read (and set goals), but time reading is very limited and therefore they push for the purchase of more features - which makes this app much less interesting….Version: 2.12.6

UnusableI had a lot of hope for this app based on the preview images. I think the most disappointing thing for me was the navigation. It takes some digging to get to books I’m currently reading. Also, reading progress is poorly displayed. I liked being able to import my Goodreads file, but I found it was really poor at matching the books up to its database. I couldn’t add images where they were missing. I had to manually add books to replace each unmatched book. Deleted the app..Version: 2.7.2

Reading sessionsLove this app. I love the lay out and I’ve been trying to search for an app I like because my old reading tracker quit on me. Bookshelf has been the closest that I actually like the lay out of. It makes me want to read and I was actually excited when I opened the app for the first time. However, being limited to 3 reading sessions a week is absurd. I can understand limiting reading sessions, but down to 3 a week is just plain silly. I read at least 5 times a week for about an hour each and sometimes more. It’s a reading tracker, personally I think it’s a bit silly to limit reading sessions considering there’s many other features you could get with the premium subscription that would add to the experience but aren’t needed. I’m a student who can’t afford subscriptions so for the reading to be limited like this is just a kick in the face and that’s why it’s 3 stars for me instead of 4. Overall I’d really enjoy the app and would recommend it to others if reading sessions weren’t limited like this..Version: 2.14.2

Good app mostlyI really like this app. The layout and design is great and it does what it says it does. I have two major gripes with it, large enough to drop it a couple of stars. For one, the notifications need fixed. I’m guessing it’s just a bug, but I had to turn them off entirely because I was getting spammed by them when I set it to remind me one time in the evening. I personally cannot stand an app sending me unwanted notifications. The second gripe is the limit to three reading sessions per week on the free version. That is extremely disappointing as it really makes it not worth using for free. I am not opposed to paying for additional functionality but I would consider the reading mode pretty core to the experience of that app. If you want to charge for it, either offer a free trial and make it all paid beyond that OR limit the paid features to “nice to haves,” NOT basic features like that..Version: 2.12.6

One problemThe app is really good but I have one problem it won’t allow me to scan my books I have to put them all in by title it just opens the scanner with the thing telling me how many books I scanned with no way to get out of the screen if anyone has had this problem or has a fix please let me know I have a lot of books and it is kinda annoying to have to search each one.Version: 2.14.0

It’s okReally frustrating when an app doesn’t list what the available features are so you figure out what is free as you go along. Just figured out how to create reading sessions to find out you can only create three a week making your stats useless unless you upgrade to premium. Also would be nice to create a way to add books to you’ve read previously. I tried to create a collection but you have to label it as “too read” “read” or “abandoned”. Then you’d have to change the finish date to avoid it skewing your current year stats. Just a lot of work. Overall not worth the investment I’ll likely delete once I reach another mysterious limit in the free version..Version: 2.10.2

This app got a really BAD updateOh, I loved this app so much. It was my favorite book app until it got an update. this app did everything I wanted, it was perfect but one day I noticed I couldn’t add anymore books to my tbr because I was exceeding the 20 book limit even though I had 132 books on my tbr. That’s why I know I got an update. Before I could add as many books as I wanted. But now, if I want to add more books, I have to purchase their gold option. Not something I can afford. So I will be using another book app. I am so disappointed. I hope this app will get changed soon because I really loved it, but the state it’s in now I can’t..Version: 2.7.3

No way to enter numbers with keypadThe app is beautiful and could be very useful, but there is no way to enter page numbers with the keypad. You have to click through or scroll through each individual number, which is incredibly inefficient, especially as you get farther into books. This needs to be fixed immediately, as it makes the app barely functional..Version: 2.3.1

How to start readingI have no idea on how to start reading pls tell me how too thanks.Version: 2.8.3

Sleek UI – miss Shortcuts supportThe UI on this app is just great. It’s really sleek and I like how the book covers are the focus. I miss shortcuts support though. I like querying what I am reading, and quickly adding new books on the go. The “Cards” section of the app is also cruft to me. It’s not necessary for my usage of the app, I just want to track what I’m reading. Still, clearly the developer put in a ton of time and attention to detail. Thank you for your work!.Version: 2.12.6

Love this, but…I recently discovered this app and while it boasts excellent capabilities which I am really enjoying, like the reading tracking and synced books with Goodreads, I wish there was a one-time fee to tap into more feature instead of just the subscription plan. As it is, I might be forced to go back to Goodreads, despite how clean and accesible this app is. I just can’t justify that given that there are cheaper options..Version: 2.8.4

New update v v buggy!! Great app, very very expensive thoughUpdate: recent update has almost broken this app, such an incredible amount of bugs. Please undo whatever you’ve done, it’s dreadful. Great app but massively expensive for full features, I wish there was a reduced £ tier for those who don’t want the AI features. I don’t see myself using them personally but understand their use and some people would find them helpful. Customisable fields would be helpful too as well as bigger thumbnail previews as some of the images are incredibly low res, would also love to see a small addition to the series field that allows you to state which book in the series that specific book belongs to as it isn’t obvious in a lot of titles unless you do a separate search and manually add the info into the title, sorting by release date does not always solve this issue so some way to indicate book order within the series bit would be really helpful. Similar app for other things such as shows/movies or other trackable things would be amazing too or even an app that would handle both, would happily pay full cost for integrated app..Version: 2.14.1

Great idea, irritating executionThis is just the app I have been looking for, somewhere to store my thoughts and key ideas from the books I read. However, reliability and synching is something to be desired. At least three times have I filled out some Key Takeaways for a book, to see them completely gone a day later, which is hugely frustrating. Would love to be able to use this app with confidence, but I simply can’t risk it any more..Version: 1.5.1

Some good, some not so goodThere are some really good things about this app! There are also some things that I’m not so keen on. For one, I like the general design/UI. Very clean and minimal, but still very helpful. I like how quickly you can add a book or collection, and I like the Stats page. I’m not as interested in the cards, but that’s a personal matter. I have some ideas for improvements. Top of the list is some kind of duplicate detection functionality. I’ve seen it on other apps, and while I’m not sure if my list already had duplicates or if something weird happened on import, my list is now twice the size it should be. I’ve been deleting them manually (since there’s also no bulk edit), but therein lies the second problem: with over 2,000 books, the app is very slow and lags. I understand many people might not get to 2,000 books, but if there’s a lifetime payment option, I reckon there’s a good chance you could get people adding that much data. I want this app (or others like it) to replace Goodreads, so ideally I want it to be able to handle similar shelf sizes. I should say I accidentally bought the lifetime subscription (I thought I selected the monthly) and Apple have refused me a refund, so I’m partly using this app out of necessity. I don’t think (at this point in time) the app is worth paying the lifetime fee, but I understand developers need to earn a living too, and my issue is not really with them. I’m hoping as the app grows it will be worth the lifetime payment..Version: 2.8.4

Maximum number of booksIt is a good app for logging what books you’re reading and want to read, though the free version only allows up to 20 books and I get through that many in a couple of months so as a short term tracker it works.Version: 2.7.4

ExpensiveThe app is great, it has a lot of cool features that do seem to make reading more fun and make finishing books seem like an attainable goal. HOWEVER, the app is ridiculously expensive and the free version is very restrictive. Unless you’re willing to pay nearly $50 every year for a fancy timer and some automated math I would suggest just keeping track of your reading progress and calculate your reading speed by yourself..Version: 2.11.3

Good but could be betterI started using this app soon after I started reading but there is one issue after the new update. That is that you can only add a limited number of books (20) when before the update I could add as much as necessary. So now I can’t add or keep note of any new books that I’ve read or bought which kind of defeats the purpose. However, other than that, this app has been good at keeping notes on books and record of how many books you read in a year and how long it takes to finish them..Version: 2.7.3

Would buy the lifetime subscription, but…This app is very good, with one massive flaw… it’s book catalog. I own a couple hundred books. I initially tried the app with 4 books. I was very impressed, so I attempted to add more books to my (app) library. I gave up 10 minutes later, because of all the isbn barcodes it did not recognize and books that were not recognized in the search function. I expected to have to manually add many books, especially my old ones. However, needing to manually add 4 of the Harry Potter hardcover books, my LOTR collection, and many Penguin Classics, is unacceptable. I cannot imagine how many books I would have to manually add to get my entire physical library into this app. I emailed the developer directly. Was told that the upcoming update would fix the issue. It did not, and I received no response after advising that the update did not fix the problem. I still hope this gets fixed, because it’s the only thing preventing me from using the app and buying the subscription..Version: 2.8.3

DisappointingI had high hopes for this app. I enjoy charting the books I read, and in particular how many titles I complete reading each month. This app seemed just right for my needs until I read 7 books in a single month, and the app refused to ever acknowledge that I read more than 3.5 books that month. Each book had the date I finished reading it displayed nicely beneath the cover image. But the app would not go beyond noting that I had read anything more than 3.5 books. I am now returning to charting my reading progress in a paperback reading progress journal instead..Version: 2.12.6

ImprovementI love everything about this app, you can log the pages you’ve read however when I lost my iCloud I lost my entire bookshelf and have forgotten some of the books I read because Bookshelf has no login..Version: 2.11.3

Doesn’t save most notesI really wanted to love this app but I have wasted so much time taking notes, typing them, dictating them, screenshooting them etc. only to find that maybe one in 10 saves. Using this for study so really important that my quotes save - I could have cried when I realised after a long study session that I had nothing tangible to show for it and had to reread it all again to put into one note instead. Such a shame and I’m cancelling my subscription..Version: 2.5.0

Promising App with Limitation on Free UsageI downloaded this app to track my reading progress and take notes on the books I'm reading. I also wanted to monitor my reading time, pages read, and achieve the goals I set. I'm slightly disappointed though, as I've only used the app for a few days and have already tracked 3 sessions. Today, when I tried to log another session, I received a message saying I've reached my 3 sessions for the week and need to upgrade for unlimited sessions. It's frustrating that there's a limit on how much I can track for free. Most people read more than 3 times a week, and the fact that the limit resets weekly is unreasonable. This means if you want to catch up on your reading sessions during the week, you're still restricted to 3. Despite the app's potential, it's disheartening that many apps push you to pay for even basic features. While I like Bookshelf, this limitation makes me consider switching to another app. It would be great if they could address this in the future, or perhaps offer a free trial for their premium features..Version: 2.10.8

I want to love itI use to love this app and even bought the life time subscription. But after the newest update the app would force close whenever I opened the app. I ended up having to delete and redownload the app but lost all my reading stats. Really annoyed about losing all that data especially since that’s why I began using the app. I hope the developer works out the bugs because I really want to love this app again..Version: 2.11.0

The app stopped workingI loved this app when i first downloaded it but then it stopped working and I kept trying and trying to get it to work I couldn’t add new books or anything I tried turning my phone off and on several times and then last chance thing I deleted the app then re downloaded it and was hoping to be able to restore my data because it has an iCloud feature and your supposed to be able save your data to. But then once I re downloaded it I lost all my data and it still doesn’t work. I’m really disappointed because I had a lot on there. I read a lot. And to have lost all of that is extremely disappointing….and I was paying for the membership….Version: 2.10.6

Really good but it keeps shutting down the app whenever i try to go into a categoryThis is a really good app but i really want it to not log me out off the app whenever i click on anything.Version: 2.13.3

Great app, but not impressed with some key thingsI would love to change this to a 5 star review if this app can stop tracking personal identifiers linked to my identity, or at least 4 star if I can actually get an explanation of this change from the dev. I purchased lifetime premium when the privacy nutrition label listed that none of the data collected was linked to the user’s personal identity. That was a big factor in choosing this app - I don’t mess around with privacy practices. I noticed that Bookshelf now collects and tracks personal identifiers. I messaged the dev asking about this about a month ago and still have heard nothing. If I don’t hear back still after this, I will be finding a different app and likely requesting a refund. I understand that devs can’t always respond to every message they receive, and that’s perfectly fine. However, this privacy inquiry is not one of those cases and I’ve made it clear to them that this is a make or break factor for me in continuing to use the app. Would be a shame to leave the app because I genuinely love the features and UI, but it doesn’t matter if privacy is not respected..Version: 2.10.9

GoodGood, I like the simplicity it’s easy for me to understand. Shame some some of the features don’t work, like the notifications i was hoping they would help my reading habits..Version: 2.5.1

Not what I hoped forJust downloaded the app while on holiday in Spain, so the 'author search' lists book titles automatically in Spanish, rather than the original English! Can't see a language option in the app, so will have to wait to use it once back in England. Also, although the app finds book cover images for you automatically (great, but it's the Spanish versions while you're in Spain), I thought there would also be at least a brief book synopsis / publisher's blurb to go with it. Maybe that'll come in future, but for now you have to enter all information yourself. No option to import notes or highlights you may already have in your Amazon Kindle account..Version: 1.4.2

Glitches & Can’t Update LibraryThis was really cool in the beginning and I am glad I only opted for the free trial first. I was in the process of adding to my library and tracking my reading, but just 2 days after having the app it started saying no results found. I tried to search for books I had already added to my library and still no results were found. After deleting and redownloading the app and even trying to use it on my iPad, I still had the same issues..Version: 2.10.9

Not for serious readersI get that the developer has to get paid for it. But to disallow updating of your progress without using reading sessions is not right as your limited to 3 sessions a week. By discovering users habits you are also discouraging them to pay. Why should they change how they read and pay you for it? There isn’t a quick way to update the x% or x pages you read tonight or through the day. I read a lot. 80-100 books a year. I would read a few times a day. Short bursts or long ones. This app could be better than Goodreads, if the updating of your progress was easier and faster. I love the UI a lot of the Ux is also great. As a Ux designer I am obsessed with the clean interface. But I have some notes that may help in future development having also a bookstagram account with a decent following, I gathered some feedback hope this helps: - time left under a book is anxiety driving. Most users don’t care how long the app thinks it will take them to read something. They will happily read as long as it takes to finish a book - again not easy to update your reading why do I need to do a session to say I read 50 pages today and specific how long it took me. I don’t remember. I didn’t keep eye on the time. Again anxiety inducing Making updating reading stressful not fun - most serious readers read in sprints during the day, 10min, 20min there reading mode isn’t used by them because they read in their own time and schedule So relying on this time based fiction to update your reading isn’t enjoyable for them This app has so much potential. And I’m excited to see what happens further on but with the current state I wouldn’t subscribe as simply it doesn’t do what I need it to do for me..Version: 2.12.6
