B&G: Companion App for Sailors for Negative User Reviews

Anchor alarm stupid setupHow hard it is to let us set-up the location of the anchor place ? Like if I forget to set-up the alarm when I’m dropping the anchor I can’t use this feature….. Also the new update doesn’t work really neither on my iPad Pro or my iPhone most of the time crashes.Version: 2.1.0

Not ready for prime timeThi app has promise but doesn’t deliver! I am running it on iPhone 12 Pro Max. The app is slow, the buttons and drop down menus are very slow and often don’t work. App Store says Australian charts are USD 49.99 but app says premium version is 36.99??? What is going on. This place is the only place I can give feedback or ask for help. Hell and feedback is just not available via the app. Is the app compatible with Vulcan 7FS? The personalise your map button is too slow. Needs a serious make over..Version: 2.0.26

BrokenI have invested in $15K of B&G gear and the app doesn’t work. Before the hack it was limited.. For example, when creating a route you could not search for a destination or route to a waypoint, you had to poke around on the map. Since the hack août I routing does not work at all. This is the only real value of an app like this, creating routes and syncing them to a B&G plotter. Everything else you could do with other free apps. So basically this is a useless app. Getting an extra 3 month subscription from Jan to April when the boat is wrapped up in the dead of winter does not help me. Basically, YOU GAVE ME $3.75! After I invested $15 thousand dollars! B&G has become a joke. The software on the equipment is fine but so much of the hardware is cheap plastic now, the app is garbage, the manuals are useless, and support does not respond..Version: 2.1.8

Does not seem to support Zeus TouchThere seems no way to connected to my Zeus Touch system due to the QR code connection method. Secondly I cannot seem to find any support material on connectivity problems/issues!.Version: 1.0.19

So far, so badMy boat is equipped with B&G instruments. I was looking to spend several thousand dollars updating the chartplotter based on the promise of this app, and its capability to plan routes and then sync with their latest instruments. However, so far the app seems to be far from ready for prime time, and may even be risky to rely on for navigation. It is very unintuitive, buggy, and crashes regularly with a white screen appearing in some instances. Even basic functions such as route planning do not appear to work. I already use iNavX and TZiBoat. Both of these apps are streets ahead of B&G’s being much easier to use, and bug free and with many more features built in. Furthermore, since 23rd June 2023, the B&G app refuses to launch and a splash screen says B&G is experiencing a “service outage”. Subscriptions have been extended based on this. Brunswick Corp that owns B&G has been the subject of a significant “IT Security Incident” that affected a number of their businesses and made headline news. Maybe they are related? Either way, I would advise not wasting your money yet on this app which is not even at Beta test level..Version: 2.1.8

Back button doesn’t work - offline map slowThe latest version of the app Back button doesn’t work. Go into any sub screen, the back button on the top left wont respond to and tap or click. The offline map downloads take forever with a 50Mbps DL connection. Get better server or put downloads on the cloud..Version: 2.1.8

New route making features come up shortThe new create route with auto routing added is a great feature knowing you can just keep adding next waypoint. However if you have a lot of pre-loaded waypoints you cannot directly input those in sequence like a bulk insert feature actually in the route creation on the Vulcan plotter. If that feature was in the app then you really have an amazing app to do all your pre-routing at home..Version: 2.0.34

Don’t workI cannot redownload it. Update doesn’t work! €42.99 wasted!?!.Version: 2.1.8

Hoping Will Replace All other Apps - Not YetFirstly I’ve not used extensively and am hoping to revise my review down the line. I would love to replace all my apps with this and have consistency with the electronics on the boat. However the first glaring issue is navigation on an iPhone 12 Pro just does not work. The navigations for “Back”, “Save”, etc that display at the top of the screen overlap the time and make these buttons frustratingly hard to press. This frustration is enough to stop using until resolved. So next year when my Navionics card and App subscriptions expire I’ll revisit. For now it looks good, and I think it’s going to be great if it gets further development..Version: 2.0.9

App doesn’t work offlineThis app is terrible. It constantly glitches and needs updates. Then I go offshore and the app has crashed. This isn’t a once or twice thing that’s happening. We are on a circumnavigation and sailing half the time for months at a time and it has never worked. I’m trying to get a refund but that’s difficult as well..Version: 2.1.8

From clunky to doesn’t work at allThe old app was a bit clunky but could be used. The new one asks for my email, then refuses to let me create an account or log in. That makes this app pretty much useless. UPDATE: I found the problem. The developers set it up where it will *ONLY* work with Safari. Since my default browser is Firefox, the app won’t allow me to log in. A good developer would have set the app up to use whichever browser is default..Version: 2.0.34

Zero customer serviceI contacted B&G customer support through the app and after four days received no response. I did receive an email confirming that they received my inquiry. The email stated that I could reply to it with further questions, so I replied after the fourth say to say that I had not heard from them. That was almost two weeks ago, still no response. Very disappointed in B&G..Version: 1.0.22

Useless for remote placesI paid for premium so I could use the charts offline when I have no internet. Unfortunately this app requires you to sign in every now and then.. so cannot use offline charts when offline as cannot sign in..Version: 2.0.24

Multiple bad bugs in routingTrying to hide routes but they show up agin after 5 minutes or if I restart the app. The route editing is glitchy… having trouble moving waypoints on the route. Developer should Q&A the app with 1 bar LTE to witness these bugs. Need a way to sync data/routes without LTE via local hotspot or bluetooth (something essential for this type of app)..Version: 2.0.4

Nice idea not intuitiveThe app as well intentioned and I use it because I have B & G devices but I’d really prefer some thing better. Lots of little bugs and issues in basic usage of the app. Simple things like when you create a route from a point you’ve selected on the map it says that as your starting location instead of destination. It’s easy to change but it’s just not well thought out. That seems to sum up most of the issues with this app well intention but not very good..Version: 2.0.34

Disappointed in this appAIS data is poor quality with lots of missing nearby targets due to the source of AIS data (just compare it to MarineTrafffic) Modifying routes or waypoints is far more difficult than it needs to be and must have required a PhD in ‘design of difficult user interfaces’ to develop Route syncing between devices doesn’t always work. I can’t recommend this app for any live use at sea … you should avoid the subscription and just use it for simple planning at home. There are other much better nav apps out there..Version: 2.0.21

Very disappointing integration with Zeus 12 ChartplotterGiven that the Zeus3S 12 costs around £3700 one would of thought the iOS app would work seamlessly. I routinely struggle to mirror the chart plotter my iPhone or iPad. When it does connect the graphics aren’t sharp or responsive. I struggle with WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity between the plotter and my iPhone 15 pro max. The iOS app does not display AIS information. I’m surprised that the app does not display other boat information such as TWA, TWS, Autopilot and Radar like the significantly cheaper Orca Core. Finally the Apple Watch app does not work no matter which connection method I choose..Version: 2.2.0

Frustrating when unavailableThe app didn’t work for over a week and for the first several days there was no information from B&G. They finally updated the error message, but it’s very frustrating that even the free features became unavailable while their system was down..Version: 2.1.8

UselessAll I want to do is create a route (or import a GPX file) and then send to my B&G Vulcan plotter. To have to put a micro SD card into a laptop, copy a file and then put the card in my plotter is archaic. The plotter has Wi-Fi and a NMEA 2k port, why can’t Navico step into the current century and have an app that works on a smart phone? Can’t import/export GPX files as app claims. Can’t connect to a device despite app telling you that it is added and ready to use. NO documentation. FAQ in app leads to empty screen..Version: 2.1.8

B&G AppI am grateful to B and G for reinforcing my view that paper charts are an essential part of navigation. This app is simply not reliable enough and seems to focus on sales rather than service. Lost its way..Version: 2.1.8

Big disappointmentI really wanted this to work. Problems: - doesn’t synch from Zeus S to iPhone. After waiting 2 hrs to reach tech support, I was told that it will synch if both phone and Zeus are logged into a separate Wi-Fi system. Ug. - measure distance feature would be great but it is wildly inaccurate. It says the distance from San Francisco to Seattle is 3800 feet. -incredibly, the Create Route feature doesn’t let you creat a route from your waypoints. Instead you just pick start and destination points and it creates a computer generated route. Useless. - the weather forecast feature is sooo slow and doesn’t indicate which weather model or source data is used. Since you evidently have to be on a Wi-Fi network to use it, you’ have much better options on the internet..Version: 2.2.2

Complete failure - support nonexistentApp doesn’t work. Account is broken. Customer support told me my Vulcan 7 is t compatible with the App - despite that being one of the much publicised features. I’ve responded accordingly but no one bothers replying. Hopeless. Would rate zero stars if possible..Version: 1.0.19

Does not load mapsThe app does not load maps anymore. Says will load and may take up to a minute and does not happen. Honestly I stop waiting after 5 min. Not sure what issues is? I got it to finally work by deleting app and then reloading..Version: 2.0.5

Let us use auto Pilot !!B&G / Simrad please caught up with your competitors and allow FULL control from the remote app. It’s stupid that you block this, it is not because of security as you claim it’s because your a trying to sell more hardware..Version: 2.1.8

ValI wanted to see the depths of a lake in North America, it is almost unexplored and now I can’t cancel my subscription for a year (company policy).Version: 2.2.3

Difficult to use app that costs moneyReally disappointed with how difficult it is to do simply things like navigate to a point, or bugs when attempting to create a route beforehand. This app gets one star because it is not useable on the water, it pushes a yearly subscription and it’s the only app to interface with B&G chart plotters..Version: 2.1.8

Absolutely UselessI bought all brand new B&G instruments for my sailboat, including Zeus S which does not allow mirroring or any app function at all. It's connected but does nothing. It freezes and disconnects the rest of the time. It kind of half-worked with my old Vulcan but not Zeus S..Version: 2.2.1

Junk AppHaving an issue between the app and my chart plotter. Nothing will synchronize. Called tech support for B&G, waited 4 1/2 hrs on hold. Finally got thru to someone who said they think it’s an app problem and to submit a help ticket thru the app. The app won’t submit the ticket, and there is no number to call. Spent $$20k plus on all B&again products for my sailboat and can’t get any help when needed..Version: 2.1.10

Support for Zeus S mirroring lackingI would happily improve my rating if screen mirroring for Zeus S was included. You think that when you buy the latest and greatest chart plotter from B&G this key feature would remain, but so far not. Documentation download doesn’t work either. It would also be great if the premium promo could be hidden in the free app. As it stands the only thing that is supported is the sw upgrade function, although I haven’t needed to use it yet.Version: 2.1.10

Unreliable tries to access mobile dataHave B&G instruments on my sailboat and just purchased the new Zeus S. The Zeus S is mounted at the nav station and I thought I could use this app in the cockpit. I want to like this app, it looks great and works well - when it works. But it loses positioning and the only way to know is see 0 for speed, somewhat dicey in a tight spot. It continually attempts to use wifi or cellular if enabled and most of my sailing is in remote locations with very slow internet access. The app hangs unresponsive as it seeks internet data. I can somewhat mitigate this by putting my phone in airplane mode but it leaves me without text messaging. A setting for the user to set the app to only work offline would be a helpful addition. Overall not a reliable app for real time navigation. The Zeus S however is rock solid..Version: 2.1.9

BuggyApp is full of bugs and it’s embarrassing that B&G let this get pushed to prod. App crashes frequently, basic functions like adding multiple waypoints to routes doesn’t work, connection to the chart plotter frequently fails despite the Wi-Fi being connected and stable. The list of issues goes on and on..Version: 2.1.8

DisappointingI really try to like this app, but it’s just a hassle. When it works, it needs an internet connection to transfer from Navionics to B&G. There is NO way possible to import a GPX file other than importing over Wi-Fi. Isn’t this APP suppose to make our lives easier?! The connection to my Zeus 3s drops off continuously while my phone is sitting right next to it. It has a 50% chance of transferring a route to my plotter. For a company that promotes “High End”, “Racing” type performance, I would expect a lot more consistency from this app. Not to mention “Ease of Use”..Version: 2.1.10

Good but could be betterNot as easy use as Aqua maps. Interface could be better.Version: 2.1.8

B&G App needs moreThis is a terrible app for B&G. It seems like more thought needed to go into the app. The navigation function isn’t helpful when compared to other apps out there. The connectivity with my Zeus3 isn’t helpful. To me it seems B&G created this app so B&G could say they have an app. Way better apps out there..Version: 2.2.0

App doesn’t work at allB&G makes it very difficult to actually talk to someone, notice there are no numbers in the website. Can’t get past the login screen because of an authentication error, app is useless if you can’t get past the first screen..Version: 2.0.26

B and GI usually don’t write reviews BUT… I have installed a full suite of Triton instruments with a Vulcan 9 MFD. There are absolutely NO problems with the instruments The problems is customer support. If you have a question, you better work it out yourself because B and G won’t respond. I have wanted on the phone for up to 50 minutes listening to the recording that says ‘you are third inline’ more times than I care to remember. I have emailed questions and the very next day you get - wait for it- a case number. I bought the B and G because they are sailing instruments as opposed to Garmin that has fishing apps, etc on their MFD. Knowing what I know now, I think I would have bought Garmin instead JUST for the better customer service.Version: 2.1.10

It Just Doesn’t Work! This app is so disappointing the maps now fail load on both my iPad and my iphone, I’ve paid the subscription for France and the UK, £52 in total, but the app is essentially useless because the maps won’t load and the app crashes when you try to download an offline map. I have tried to submit this complaint via the feedback in the app but that is another thing that doesn’t work, critical error apparently so I am reporting these errors via the App Store. I am very disappointed with this app especially as I’ve paid a considerable sum for the charts. Therefore I would like a full refund please..Version: 2.0.4

Could be great but instead worthlessTrying to pair to iOS phone and iPads is difficult and it will work until they upgrade and then it fails again. On the new iPad the location shows boat on land instead of 5-15nm out to sea. It has so much potential but is dangerous to rely on. Very disappointing..Version: 2.1.3

When will the app work againSince the app got hacked we have not been able to access it and can’t find an eta for when it will start working again?.Version: 2.1.8

Limited.Limited functionality compared with plotter making it basically useless. Only thing it’s good for is mirroring or controlling plotter remotely over wifi. Be careful…the app overwrites all your routes stored in the plotter. I lost 28 race courses and hours of work when I synchronised the app and plotter, the app which had no routes simply overwrote the 28 stored in the plotter. No warning this would happen..Version: 2.2.2

I guess it’s the only thing out thereIt’s so sad that this app can’t even use basic functionality to edit things like home location and weight points. You literally have to turn your phone sideways in order to go to the back button. When you try to send her the map for your home Harbor it offers you destinations about 20 miles away. Pay for a basic QA department..Version: 2.1.8

Really tried to like the appI have B&G instruments on my boat and I’m quite happy with them but the app is terrible. I really tried to like it since it has world wide coverage but trying to download maps for offline use is the worst experience. I also have the Navionics app and the downloads work like a charm. On B&G I have selected 3 areas I wanted to have as offline maps and they just won’t download to my iPad. I get to 10 to 20 percent before the download stops. All this is on a super fast Fios connection. Given these results, it’s utterly unusable while on passage trying to update maps on a cell connection or public wifi. This is a problem since I first downloaded the app 2 years ago. I tried deinstalling and reinstalling with no change. Really disappointing and even support could not help me when I contacted them a year ago..Version: 2.2.2

Crashes ConstantlyTried linking up with my new Zeus plotter and it crashes the app, this includes attempts on 6 other phones. Brutal lag times when trying to access weather info along a particular route. Great for looking up routes but I wouldn’t plan on the seamless integrations that B&G sells you on..Version: 1.0.30

Needs GPX importThis app is really good but lacks a very important feature. You must login to a desktop web version to import routes. I would pay for this app indefinitely if this feature was added. Will update to 5 stars when it is added..Version: 2.0.27

APP UnavailableB&G, Extending my subscription 3 months is really worthless for me since I live in the northeast. I need it now, not in the winter. I had great expectations for your APP but I find it very tedious. Your auto routing often takes me where I would never go. The APP often hangs up and making and deleting routes is a challenge. Take a look at Navionics Boating APP, it works. Its also very difficult the connect to the chartplotter through your wifi app..Version: 2.1.8

Can’t get helpApp won’t launch. On the phone for hours and passed on to several departments before being told they would call back. Still waiting weeks later for that call. Guess I’ll be sending package back and going with competitors..Version: 1.0.21

Navionics charts have better accuracyExtremely slow servers , after 5 hours on Wi-Fi only 13 percent of chart is downloaded. Waste of money to buy this app , Navionics is much better value for your money. Cancelled my subscription but unable to acces offline maps as the servers won’t allow me to download them. If I can get my money back will be happy to delete this useless app..Version: 2.1.4

Maps will not loadI love this app until the recent upgrades made it unusable. I keep getting the maps loading screen. I have bought the app based on my previous experience with the trial unfortunately I am no longer able to use the app. I have upgraded the app, uninstalled and reinstalled and still have no maps..Version: 2.0.6

Not very useful, seems broken. There is currently no way to create a route manually, it only wants to do an autoroute, but that doesn’t work either, it only makes a straight line from A to B. Without this feature, the app is only useful as a tool to update firmware on my chart plotter..Version: 2.1.8

Trouble adding devicesNice app with good features. Updated my MFD to latest software but when trying to add my devices to the app it crashed every time I scanned the QR code. I’m running it on an iPad Pro using current iOS. But for this problem the rating would have been higher..Version: 1.0.30
