Seed Oil Scout: Healthy Dining for Negative User Reviews

Unsane3.99 a month for a zenius-i-vanisher style map of restaraunt. um, like this should be free. maybe take an economics class or something. literally just grow up.Version: 16.4

HorribleUsed the app during the summer of 2022 while dinning out. Would ask restaurants I would go to which oils they used and would share with other users on the app. It was a great idea at the time seed oils were being pushed to be avoided by many YouTubers. Since then I stopped dinning out or just usually attend the same restaurants so I didn’t have much of a use for the app anymore. Fast forward today I tried to open the app and there $36 yearly subscription 😂😂🤣 are you crazy. Deleted..Version: 4.5.4

Squandered opportunityHad high hopes for this app, even though it had a subpar UX. Living in a non health-conscious community, it’s a challenge to find dining options that align with my health values and this app was helpful in locating a few good options in the greater area. However, most restaurants had not been reported on and now that everything is behind a paywall the app is useless. There’s not nearly enough data available in my area to make a monthly fee worth it. The developers need to spend more time building community before locking everything up. Someone can do this much better, and I’m sure they will..Version: 18.8

Boo to report limitsHonestly, the people behind this app have created something really important moving forward. The more pressure restaurants get to stop using seed oils can only be a good thing. Having said that.. why the hell would you put ads on the app? It just baffles the mind..Version: 16.0

Hopes dashedI had high hopes for an app like this, as I try to avoid bad oils as much as possible. There seemed to be very limited places during my 7 day trial, and then the overpriced charge was coming up upon renewal. There just didn’t seem to be anything in this app worth the price, and I was pretty disappointed. Not sure if it’s because it’s new and very limited or what the deal is. The developer should probably get a base of happy customers first, before charging for the app..Version: 4.8.6

No way to use it for freeI’ve used it in the past and then deleted the app. I went back to see if it’s improve but there’s no way to get into the app without paying for it now because I’ve already used a free trial..Version: 4.8.0

Why so pay walled? Dumb.Where is the free options? makes no sense to pay wall when I’m living in an extremely popular city and majority of the popular restaurants here don’t even have information.. also it’s users finding out the stats.. you’d think you’d want more users (not pay walling and losing them) to get more information.. and makes it impossible to move past the screen of trialing. Loved the idea and the concept but not worth paying for as i couldn’t even find my favorite restaurants. Sad..Version: 23.3

Dishonest marketingI got a free trial of this app recently and opted to be notified when it ended. I was never notified and then was charged for a full year of the app (even though the monthly price was advertised.) very disappointed. I then sent an email to the company but never heard back. As far as the app, I am 100% behind their motive, but there’s very little information right now, especially considering it’s a paid app. I live in a top 100 metro area, but there were less than 10 restaurants with info, and only 2 that were considered healthy/seed oil free. I would consider this still in the very early stage of development, which is why I did not want to pay for it after the trial. I am mainly disappointed with the very poor communication and customer service, though..Version: 4.8.8

Need to pay for it.Only gives a 7 day free trial. After that you need to pay.Version: 4.8.6

A crying shameVerily, I was a fool, for I did naively render assistance unto Seed Oil Scout, unearthing perilous establishments peddling treacherous seed oils. Yet, fate did cast me into the abyss of involuntary disconnection, logging me out and compelling me to yield to the demand of five noble coins ($5) monthly to partake in this app's service. Lo, I have taken measures to cast aside the app from mine device, for the realm of such lowly peasantry doth not warrant the expenditure of five precious coins from my treasury! Should I wish to dine at an earthly establishment, I could merely summon them by vocal decree, inquiring if their kitchens dabble in witchcraft (food cooked in engine lubricant). Perchance, this horrible decision might have been born after a minimum of twenty-five percent of restaurants across the city were reviewed, only then would this app cease its squandering of both my moments and my gold! Henceforth, I curse thee upon my lips, for fire and brimstone shall be given in return!.Version: 18.1

Not very useful.Downloaded this a while back & seemed like a good idea, but maps don’t show that many. More of the bad restaurants than good with useless info. It should Just show the good rather than demonize businesses others. Used to show all the info but now they want $$$ for info monthly or yearly. Not worth it for me. I certainly am not going across state just to eat at a no seed oil restaurant that only may have salads. Make your own. Bottom line, I feel this app is too “green” in the market to be charging as it’s not like there is a plethora of dinning options/places offered. Massachusetts alone has just a few and South Carolina has just couple choices. Eating out is a bad choice in itself anyway :) so why not just eat what you want. If your going out, just go out and try to make healthier choices. Me? I go out and get what I want. We all know fried stuff is bad anyway, seed oil or not…..am deleting the app, don’t waste your money..Version: 18.8

Glad it exists but…This would be an essential app to have, given how broken our food chain is and how deeply seed oils and other dangerous ingredients have permeated our supply. However, the PAYWALL is unnecessary. We and our families want to eat safely and happily, and already unfortunately pay a premium to do so. So a monthly fee to see the basic breakdown of any given restaurant is ridiculous to me..Version: 18.1

Want another subscription service?App was pretty good when it first came out. Even though it wasn’t perfect I used it quite often. Now it’s completely unusable without handing them 9 dollars a month lol. Even if you agree that the app is worth it, it is your duty to not subscribe. It’s the age where everybody with a mediocre service is asking for a subscription, **** em. We had a pretty nice community, I would go around and ask restaurants what they use to cook with, not that it mattered most the time because restaurants can only be added by the developers/admins..Version: 21.6

There’s not a lot of infoSince this is by user there’s not a lot of info. Every time I go somewhere new even in a new state there’s no reviews on anything. Idk if that’s because so many places use seed oils or so many people don’t care but I wish there was someone scoping out all the restaurants and putting actual info out there. This app doesn’t provide much as of right now. Hopefully that Changes as the word gets out.Version: 15.1

Another Money GrabJust another organization who claims to carry about public health but keeps everything hidden behind a paywall. When I first downloaded this app it was free to use. I found it “somewhat” useful then, and even added a few restaurants I’ve dined at that don’t use seed oils. I didn’t enjoy that the majority of the food joints listed were all “dine shamefully” or “dine cautiously”, most of which were obvious…like fast food places. I had to sift through countless restaurants to find just one that was listed as not using seed oils. I get that that’s because the majority of places DO use seed oils, but maybe just only have the locations that don’t in your database. Even if they only use seed oils for some things, they simply should not qualify. Either way it no longer matters because you can no longer access ANY aspect of the app without paying for it. You can’t even bypass the free trial for use of limited features within the app. It’s ALL or nothing. I hope this blows up in their faces. You had a good idea, with good intentions, and let greed take over. I get we all have to make money but $9 a month for an app….that’s not even a great app to begin with, just a good idea, is a bit rich for most people’s blood. Deleting this app. I hope someone else comes along and does it better without a stupid pay way. Use ads, or something, it’s not that difficult to make it free or affordable if you actually cared about people’s health..Version: 22.1

Not great in CanadaNot great if your in Canada… nothing is on the map!.Version: 12.3

Only for the USDon’t purchase this app if you live outside the US. I’m in England, charged me in Great British Pounds but then only diverted me to places in the US, it did also show where I live in England but then kept diverting me back to the US. Annoying.Version: 4.8.0

The app was better when it was free. The payment model doesn’t sit right with an app like this. I love the idea of being able to locate all the seed oil free restaurants in my area. People should know this info! Your users help you get restaurants added to your database however, now you are asking them to pay $5/month to view the list of safe restaurants? If you don’t want to pay, you can watch a few ads via a clunky popup that doesn’t work. It’s great info but not worth the money. Especially since there aren’t a lot of users adopting it in my area..Version: 16.9

Horrible appThe vast majority of reviews for this app must be fake. First, it makes you register with an email address to access the app, and then once you’re in the app, it makes you watch an ad before looking at the information for any restaurant. If you don’t want to watch an ad you can pay five dollars or $40. There are barely any restaurants with reviews or reports. And there is really no way to tell that the reports for restaurants are accurate. I would not trust the information in this app at all. Don’t waste your time on it..Version: 15.7

Should be freeThis app is doing really important work. But the information should be freely accessible to the masses. Making healthy choices should not be saved for people who can afford it. Please consider advertisements for a free-to-access option and then a paid service if people want it ad free. I know these apps aren’t free to run but it’s really disappointing to see valuable information being hidden from people who may not be able to afford it. Even at the low cost..Version: 19.6

Ruined by Paywell and Poor DesignThe app is now completely worthless if you don’t pay. In what universe do you expect the users to do all the work for crowdsourcing the data, but then also put all the data behind a paywall? It doesn’t take an MBA understand that will reduce the amount of restaurants reviewed, which will in turn make it less likely people pay for the app. The functionality of it even if you do pay is still very poor and makes it hard to use. Great idea, poor execution..Version: 20.1

Great idea, bad monetization modelI love the idea of the app and hope it catches on but this was a total waste of time for me. It has you go through tons of screens to “customize” your experience before throwing a $100 (!?!) sub prompt at you. That is way too much for an app like this. The custom options didn’t even seem to make any sort of difference on my search results. There was exactly one decent option in KC (2.5 million pop metro) so it’s very limited in the midwest. Setting filters will filter on the map but not in list view. I’ll try it again in future but the $99 really put me off of it..Version: 22.1

Crowd sourcing doesn’t work without a crowd.Used this app in the summer of 2023 and loved it. Went to use it again recently and found that there’s not a free version at all anymore. Only a trail which you have to cancel. I understand you’ve got to make money but this does not seem like a wise choice for this kind of app. It requires user input to review these places which comes much faster with more ushers thus making the app much more useful. Sorry but i will just eat at home instead..Version: 4.8.1

RIP OFF !I hate seed oils and avoid at all costs. Very diligent with every restaurant i go to. I used to use this app when it was free. Pretty shotty overall and most of the information is honestly not reliable but it was a cool concept I was happy to support. When they added the “pro” feature and basically locked everything I was hesitant due to the price being way too high relative to the benefit i had been getting with the free version. Eventually after a few months I decided to do the free trial to see if the fees resulted in an improvement in the platform - NOPE. Not only is the information unverified by the app and unreliable (saw multiple “green checks” where i know for a fact the places are not safe), they expect users to 100% do all the research for them while paying fees! I was never notified when my trial period ended as the app promised to do, and not only that- they elected to charge me $50 - FIFTY DOLLARS - for an annual pro subscription that I did not ask for!!! I would’ve been fine paying the $2 per month - i am not price sensitive and want to support awareness of healthy oils - but $50 at once without approval is just outrageous for a borderline useless platform..Version: 22.1

Agree with Squandered OpportunityI was using this app since the beginning, took my time to contact a few restaurants and contribute to the app, and now they want me to pay a monthly fee (and not an especially small fee) for the privilege of using it?! Yeah right. I don’t live in a large city, there were hardly any restaurants on here with thorough data to begin with, and I make 99% of my meals at home, so why on earth would I pay a ridiculous monthly fee?! Too bad. It was a nice concept..Version: 19.0

Subcription price is ridiculousGreat idea but subscription price is ridiculous..Version: 4.8.0

Pretty DisappointedI was looking forward to a means of making better choices in my dining experiences. I throughly enjoy the info freely given on their IG page. Not the same here!! I can’t even explore the “free” (understandably limited) version before deciding if I want to pay for any upgrades. So now I’ve submitted my email, created an account, and now can’t even explore the possibilities that this app may or may not have to offer. I should have read the reviews first. I will not be emailing support for ideas on fair prices. You actually have my email now if you feel the need to contact me for solutions..Version: 4.6.4

Not up to date Too New?This app is a great idea and I see wonderful potential but many restaurants are not on the app unless it’s in a major, major city. Also, I emailed 10 restaurants right off the bat, most of them major chains and 6 of them were undeliverable. For $35/year, I would expect the research to be up to date on restaurants’ email addresses and always adding new restaurants. Maybe in a year or two? Keep it up, SOS!.Version: 4.8.6

Not easily usableI love the idea of this app but it was not actually very good at what it's made to do - help me find seed oil free restaurants. We travel often and I wasn't able to look for restaurants ahead of time which is really frustrating. Sometimes I opened the app and even for my location there wasn't anything listed, not even not safe restaurants and sometimes it showed restaurants. It was glitchy, clunky, and pretty much unusable. Certainly not worth $35 for the year..Version: 4.8.1

RatingThey force you to rate them and it’s rude to force people..Version: 14.4

Completely Unusable NowMonths ago this was a fantastic app to use, you could fly around the map and look for restaurants and places to eat at. Then they started heavily integrating a monthly subscription program into every single facet of the app. The “free version” of the app is completely unusable as everything you tap on is just an add to pay them monthly. And this is yet another example of an app developer not at all understanding how to charge for their app and what most people would be willing to pay. I would be happy to pay for your app, but I’m not going to pay as much as I do for a streaming service monthly for this app which I may check in on a couple times a month? I would be more than happy to pay a one time $30 payment or something though, but there’s no option. So I guess I just won’t use the app anymore.Version: 21.3

Major DisappointmentI am a mom with two young kids who cares GREATLY about seed oils and tries to limit mine and my kids consumption as much as possible. What an amazing app this was until they decided to start randomly charging?! They get their info from the app users! What on earth?! I’ve kept the app downloaded on my phone because I haven’t had the heart to delete it yet because I loved it when I first got it. But I am finally deleting in the hopes that someone else comes along and executes this idea better and more generously..Version: 4.8.1
