American Heritage® Deluxe for Positive User Reviews

My favorite dictionary, no weight or bulk! When I first installed this application, I thought it was missing a lot of words. But when I checked again before writing a review, everything was there, and since then I have been really pleased. In high school I used to carry a dictionary with me all the time, but got out of the habit. Now I again have a dictionary with me all the time, only bigger (yet no additional weight to carry!) and with many words pronounced, a huge help for when discussing how to say words that I've read but never heard. I also love having word origins and comparisons. Some words sound fuzzy, as if copied from a vinyl record, and I wish the example pictures that the paper dictionary has were included, but overall I am really happy with this application..Version: 0

Favorite dictionary appI have 9 dictionary apps on my iPad (and those same apps are on my iPhone); the one I love the most is AHD4 Deluxe. I haven't seen or tried AHD5, and I'm not convinced that I need to upgrade. I am happy with the information in the dictionary and its ease of use; the only complaint I have is the price and the size of the app (it takes forever to update every time it updates, which is a frequent occurrence). Since I have the app, I obviously shelled out the money for it, but it hurt a little when I hit the "buy" button. I was able to justify the price because I use the app quite often and like the extra features that come with the Deluxe version (especially the feature that every word--even in the text of another definition--is linked to its definition). If you like the hard copy of AHD, I think you'll like this app, too..Version: 3.9.1

Completely satisfiedThis is an excellent implementation of a good dictionary. It is very easy and intuitive to use. Touch any word in a definition and you go to the definition for that word. Also, with a touch you can move between the dictionary and the thesaurus. There are many other features, but these are the ones I use most often..Version: 0

Pricey but niceA little pricey, but a good application. Nice being able to hyperlink your way around through the thesaurus, dictionary, graphics, etc. Lots of information, all with a very nice flow to it. The pronunciation marks are a bit hard for my middle-aged eyes to make out, and you can't zoom in the text, so maybe a future update would allow zooming in the text. Otherwise, a good application. Puts an awful lot of information at your fingertips..Version: 0

Words at My FingertipsI contacted Enfour and learned that the AHD4 includes all illustrations, drawings, maps, and charts. It does NOT (for copyright licensing reasons) include photographs. That seems fair and honest. They responded promply to my concern. I can live without photos (I already own the print version) for a dictionary with "chops." It has all I need and more. The controls are intuitive and the links work great. I did notice that the pronunciations crackled, but that is a quibble. Maybe the audio quality will be improved in a future update. I figure that for ten cents a day for a year to pay for this $35 app is an expense I can afford, and next year and the years thereafter, it's free. Nice! Well worth the cost for having so many words, sounds, maps, illustrations, graphs, and charts in your pocket and at your fingertips..Version: 0

It's the best dictionary I've foundThe Deluxe American Heritage Dictionary of English, Fourth Ed., is the best e-dictionary I've found. As an American I'm comparing it to WordWeb, Chambers, Miriam-Webster and the Oxford Dictionary of English on iPhone/iPad. An earlier release would not show a definition via the Index on iPhone, but that has been fixed. Font size selection works fine, although there are only two sizes. The etymology and usage sections are well done and much appreciated. The definitions of words I know are spot on. All in all, it's a great dictionary and thesaurus. Get it!.Version: 3.6

Worth every centThis is a wast of money.Version: 0

-Awesome...Very useful. The whole Dictionary is in your pocket..Version: 3.8

UpdateI was really annoyed...second to last update made the index menu not function when I tapped over half the words it would do nothing. After last update alls functioning normal...Thankyou.Version: 3.6

Still the best, most compete Dictionary out there!Have been waiting for Native iPad support for a year. Worth the Wait! Thanks for the Free upgrade as a universal App, and not double charging. Looks great! I have the real paper volume, and this is it, word for word, picture for picture. If you want the "real deal", this is the App. I like the new interface pretty well, but wish you had a "full-screen" option if you wanted to hide the left search column. Especially for images. Because a square image gets only one quarter of the iPad screen, since it is fit on to the right hand column's upper half. Despite this, still the most complete and thorough dictionary App. With every single word spoken and hot linked to it's own definition. Awesome Job!.Version: 3.5

OutstandingThis is a superb dictionary both for the enhanced richness of database and responsive (and supportive) developers standing behind it. The price is also nothing compared to the wealth of information (and complimentary elegance) you receive in return. Few words on the invaluable "Instapaper" integration: - Sometimes the entry is recognized on the left panel but you may not see its definition on the right. This, I guess, is due to performance limitations of the device; the fix is however immensely easy: just gently swipe the right panel up and down and the definition will appear. I'd also like to suggest few (in my opinion) enhancing features to be considered in future updates: - a "Random Word" option (preferfably at some reachable corner like lower right) to make the app "an adventure" as well; - the ability to swipe left and right between adjacent entries..Version: 3.6

The Best So Far...I have used both the "stand-alone" versions of the AHD4 and Roget's, as well as this integrated combo. Regarding content, I prefer the AHD4 over what I consider to be its primary competitor: Oxford. While any developer can "buy" content, it is the user interface delivered and the responsiveness of the developer that matters most. Here Enfour has excelled: the UI truly leverages the mobile platform; this is not an "e-book," and Enfour has consistently strived for "customer satisfaction" in my dealings with them. And, having used both the standalone version as well as the integrated Deluxe AHD4, I can report that I have had no problems with playing sound/pronounciation files, no "crashes" of the phone or any other major defects. Yes, there are changes I'd like to see (e.g., to the History "Edit" function), and a bug in the standalone version's integration (not the Deluxe) has been identified to the developer, but all-in-all, this app delivers. For content, UI, and speed/efficiency, the AHD4 Deluxe is as good as it gets, so far. Review: 06 Mar 2009.Version: 0

Best dictionary app availableThis is a fabulous app, and the best dictionary available anywhere. It never crashes, is frequently updated when new OS versions are out, and major features are often added. No flaws that I have seen in my 2 year's usage of it, and it is completely dependable. This app is worth the price for such a thorough resource, and I really appreciate it being both descriptive and prescriptive. The usage notes are a great help, and there's nothing more I can say to help you make up your mind except you get what you pay for; and this app is worth it. Only note-and this is a large one at this point, is that there is no native iPad version. When will this change?! We're almost at iPad 2 and still no native iPad version! Once that comes in, there truly will be no better dictionary/thesaurus app. As a college student and avid reader, I give it a 10 out of 10..Version: 3.4

Great dictionaryI think the dictionary is great. I was looking for an extensive dictionary with a good interface for my iPhone and the interface is terrific. The only reason I didn't give it a higher rating is because I don't feel they lived up to the pics on their advertising... I have yet to see any graphics. Since I wasn't really looking for that in dictionary it didn't reduce my rating. Really wonderful to use on the go. I bought 3 or 4 other less expensive dictionaries and I'm sure I won't be using them any more. For those with issues with sound it's more than likely user settings. Check out the enfour website for troubleshooting..Version: 0

If you want concise this is your dictionaryI have bought American Heritage Dictionary, Merriam-Webster Collegiate and Oxford English Concise Dictionary. I have used all three and frequently find words, even American informal words, in Oxford that can't be found in American Heritage. It consumes an inordinate amount of space(bloatware) although it does load quickly for it's size. Of all the dictionaries this is the one that should be named concise..Version: 0

Pricey and outdated, but at least they addressed the iOS 9 issuesLongtime user here, very satisfied with the app despite its high price. Unfortunately since iOS 9 arrived the app has been unusable, and it appeared the developers were going to require all AHD4 users to upgrade to the 5th edition -- at full price, another $25 -- just to get an app that would open without crashing. Fortunately they came through: the latest update renders the app compatible with iOS 9.x. Whew. No reason for new users to buy this one, but nice to see the developers finally giving us the working app we paid for..Version: 6.6

This apps is great except the big T buttonThe app is perfect! It had everthing I wanted, I found all the word I searched for, all with that voice pronounciation. Other thing I like the most is ability to bookmark and history. The only reason why I havn't given five stars is because of the x symbol and a big T button, which makes it difficult to delete a word to make another search. Please remove that small x and big T button, instead provide a clear button..Version: 0

Best Dictionary App For iPhoneDon't waste your time and money on any other dictionary app -- this one has the best content, the best interface, the best of everything. I've used the app extensively for a few months now and have had none of the problems that other reviewers mentioned..Version: 0

Missing Words?First, I don't regret getting this app. But I have run into instances where a word, or word form, is not in this dictionary but in a free dictionary app. So far encountered are dogey, sportster and carry-out. I was just surprised that a dictionary of this caliber didn't have what the other did. It led me to wonder how often a dictionary's entries are updated. ?.Version: 0

American Heritage Dictionary Deluxe Third EditionTo Whom It May Concern: I just recently bought this dic•tion•ar•y (2 or 3 days ago). Today it asks me to download a new version and also when I open it there is a message that says: “Total Failure”. Should I have to pay again for download a new version? This dictionary was very expensive it cost 30 dollars. Please help. I will appreciate your prompt attention to this matter. Thanks..Version: 13.3.2

Power, Speed & StabilityThe AHD Deluxe is in my top 5 apps for the iPhone. I'm in grad school and needless to say, I'm reading and writing a lot, and to have a powerful dictionary that resides completely on the iPhone is a necessity and a blessing. It hasn't crashed once. I've yet to search for one word that was not in this dictionary. All the words I've looked up have had the audio pronunciation and this was a huge selling point for me. If you need a dictionary and thesaurus on a regular basis then stop paying .99 cents here and there for second rate dictionary apps. Pay the $35 and get it over with. You'll be glad you did..Version: 0

Suggested improvementOnce the sound icon is tapped one should be able to tap anywhere below the sound bar and return to the definition and find the BACK button still enabled. Currently the only two ways to return to the definition after hearing it pronounced is to tap the word again in the left pane or tap the lower left corner and select the popped up word. Both of these methods suffer from a loss of the BACK function. If one is nested two or three definitions deep, the BACK function will take you back up to the previous word eventually getting back to the original definition. However if one taps for pronunciation while nested, the BACK feature is lost..Version: 3.6

An Invaluable ResourceAs a person who once owned the dead tree version of this dictionary, I am still amazed that I can carry around an unabridged dictionary on my iPhone and iPad. I use this app multiple times a day..Version: 10.0.5

The Best DictionaryI have purchased several expensive dictionary apps and have found this one to be the best, mainly because of the pronounciation feature. The oxford short english is good, however, there have been many words that I have needed to know how to pronouce correctly and the pronounciation feature is not available. Thus far, every word I have looked up in the Heritage is available. So, if one of the main features is pronounciation without having to be online is what you are looking for, I would definitely give this one 5 stars..Version: 0

HelpfulEasy to use. However there are many words not included.Version: 15.1

IncredibleSuggestions for the next version: include the ability to email or save the list of words already seen. It would be useful to know how many words you referred while reading a book or something. Would love to see this feature incorporated. Thanks. Good job guys .Version: 0

Excellent DictionaryThis dictionary is just superb. Its elegant but not too simplified definitions are very helpful. Though I would like to see the option to change the font face (Helvetica would be more readable). And please let the user choose the phonetic system he likes to use (I prefer the system used in LDOCE). Besides it is frustrating to search for phrasal verbs like 'get up' or 'take off' and get to 'get' or 'take' from where I have to scroll a whole way down to the Phrasal Verbs section. I would advise inserting a special section at the beginning of every word article so you can jump to 'noun', 'verb', 'adj' , 'phrasal verb' and other sections by one click. Anyway, this is a great buy thanks to Enfour for their fabulous products..Version: 0

Gosh FinallyAfter nearly two months of waiting and multiple contacts to the customer service via email, I finally got the discounted upgrade price. Despite the bumpy road to get it, AHD5 continues its good quality in the latest version..Version: 3.9

Worth every pennyNot only an excellent resource but the developers have kept this app up to date through every IOS version since it was introduced..Version: 11.2

Wow! Wish I Had Purchased This FirstI saw the reviews on sound not working for some downloads. The sound works on every word I've tried so far, and I've sampled a few dozen words. This is the best dictionary/thesaurus I have owned since I took my original printed American Heritage dictionary to college in 1973. I purchased Rogets II first, then an under $20 combo dictionary thesaurus, and a cheaper dictionary. They fell short because only the common words were in these. I needed more depth. I decided to take a chance on this combo before many reviews were in, and I am glad I did. There are words in here that the cheaper dictionaries don't offer--a lot of them. It is very convenient to have the thesaurus in the same app so that you don't have to leave one to go to the other. I write for a living, and I plan to use this great resource extensively. The larger type size helps me and my bifocals. Thanks. If you download this on your iPhone, as I did, be patient because it take about 8 to 10 minutes. I had to keep my iPhone awake by sliding my finger over the screen several times during the download. When the blue bar stops, it will keep installing, so just let it continue. A reviewer on the stand-alone dictionary recommends buying through your desktop/laptop with iTunes because of the size. Live dangerously, use your iPhone, but be patient..Version: 0

Great Application! Hoping for iPad support. This is the best dictionary application I've ever used. I love the speedy spoken pronunciations that do not require internet connection. Some people can't read standard pronunciation guides and need pronunciations on the go. This app gives accurate pronunciation seamlessly for every single word! I also love the extensive definitions and word histories. The shake to clear function and fast switching between dictionary and thesaurus are also incredible bonuses. However, there is one thing keeping the app from perfection. Please give us iPad support! (:.Version: 3.3.1

One of my most used appsOne of the best apps on my iphone, I use this at least once a day. Even in this day and age I'm still amazed with the ability to carry over 2 pounds of paper in my pocket and search a specific word within seconds. My vocabulary has increased because I have instant access to definitions of words I come accross that I don't know the exact meaning of. I'm not only learning new words, but refining my understanding of words I have used for years. Due to the throroughness and clearity of the definitions, as well as the ease of use and beutiful interface, I'd say this is well worth the money....even if you own physical copies..Version: 0

It's a CANDY STORE for dictionary buff's!!!Just got done downloading this app & making some initial checks to see what's "under the hood". We have used the Original app for this dictionary for the past several years, & purchased it to help with homeschool for our son. This "deluxe" version is by far & hand's down superior to the original in every way!! We have 3 second generation iphones that work perfect & this app run's flawless on them. There is so many neat thing's that you can do with this app, and it will probably take a few day's just to "digest" it's full potential. Thank You to Tracey from ENFOUR for everything!!! If you are looking at this app now....don't wait....don't think.....just "buy" it!!! Honestly, you would need a pretty big backpack to carry around all this information "in print". It's amazing that you can put it all in your pocket on your iphone. Trust me, You WON"T BE SORRY..Version: 3.6

Best ChoiceSo glad this update finally makes this app compatible w latest iOS cause I've missed this app a lot. Had to resort to my several other dictionaries, none as good as this one. Owned this for a long time & assure u it far exceeds others. Finally I can delete competitive dictionaries. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!.Version: 6.3

My go to Dictionary.A few years back the developers had made a decision to stop supporting and updating this app, meaning eventually an update to the iSO would kill it. I don’t know how many people pushed back, I know I did. Hats off and thanks to the developers for re-thinking that decision..Version: 8.8

Exactly what I was looking for.For my intended use, it works great. Finally a dictionary to quickly check the meaning of a word and it's pronunciation while you're reading the passage from the book you found it in, even if reading in bed. Easy learning curve, and it allows you to quickly get back to the story!.Version: 0

The Best Dictionary AppApple would do well to adopt some of the great innovations in the well designed user interface of this superior dictionary program. One such innovation is a set of "add on" keys at the top of the standard Apple keyboard, including one to "clear the input line". I have been using a PC/MAC version, called the American Heritage Talking Dictionary, since it came out in 1994. Thought I have tried newer dictionaries, I have never found one as comprehensive and as easy to use as the AHD. So I was willing to pay the high price tag even though I already have other dictionary Apps. I was not disappointed. I definitely recommend spending the money for this quality product. One suggestion: Maybe you could include the "word finder" feature from the old program in your next update. It allowed one to search for words contained in the definitions, sort of a reverse search..Version: 3.8

Crashing on startupAfter one of the recent app version updates, AHD4 Deluxe edition is crashing on startup. Using iOS 12.5.3 (iPad Air).Version: 11.1

#1 dictionaryI've owned every version since my freshman year at university as an English major in '69. I gave it as a gift to my high school grads for 20 years, and now it's loaded on all my "smart" devices. Just read the Usage article and was charmed and edified again. I haven't noticed any color illustrations. Maybe I'm not looking up the right words. I do love the chance to check pronunciations. My go-to word source!.Version: 3.6
