✓ Great update for iPadIn my opinion this is the only dictionary, verb conjugation manual needed. I haven't found a word that is not defined. Latest update makes verb conjunction on iPad easier to access, similar to iPhone version. I used the free version for a while and while very good, I think the paid version is far more complete and worth the price especially compared to more expensive printed reference works. ✓ UsefulSome of the negative reviews are far too harsh. To say this ap is 'useless' is absurd. I use it in conjunction with google translate which is good for idiomatic phraseology but sometimes makes odd mistakes. This is a basic and inexpensive mobile dictionary. As it cost less than the physical dictionary I use I accept that it is not absolutely comprehensive. I expect that the developers are looking to constantly improve that aspect. I would suggest more detailed definitions with examples to ensure more idiomatic accuracy. Update: seems improved with a bit more detail. Examples (as requested above!) now included. Now I would suggest making the verb conjugations more comprehensive - include gerunds (andando - going) - not difficult to work out but would help beginners..Version: 5.3.12

They are wonderful for travel or general reference. ✓ Very usefulI'm in Italy now and this app gives a whole extra dimension to my trip. Since I don't need to carry anything extra I never decide not to bring my dictionary with me. That means I can read signs, menus, descriptions in museums, or whatever I choose. I especially like that it gives past participles and the like. Most dictionaries list just infinitive forms of verbs when the foreigner probably doesn't realize he's looking at a verb. ✓ GREAT Dictionary App!I have bought multiple versions of your app in the 5 languages that I study. I LOVE it! I have tried many apps — but I LOVE the consistent format you bring to these apps in the various languages. The BEST part — it is all beautifully linked. You type in the word you are looking for either in English or in Italian (or whatever language app you are using) - and the app automatically finds definitions without having to change the language (as most other apps require). In particular, the VERB conjugations are wonderful! You look up a verb — click on "conjugate" in the upper right — and you instantly have access to ALL conjugations in all tenses of that verb. NO other app I have tried comes close to convenience for rapidity of verb conjugations (and I have tried MANY other apps). This dictionary is not so good for longer translations (I use another app for that ... ) — but it is the best iphone/ipad app I have found for very fast verb conjugation review - and I use it ALL the time for this. Thank you! NOTE #1 — The non-paid versions are inferior. But the adds go away and the dictionary greatly expands if you get the paid apps (well worth the money!). NOTE #2 — Someone mentioned they had trouble hearing the words. I did to until I shut off "Go on-line for better quality" — after which I heard the voices well. ✓ The best dictionary of alThis is far and away the best bilingual dictionary I have ever found including fat paper books. I’m working on Italian. I only wish that they could make other cross combinations without English. I would love to have a French Italian dictionary. My paper French Italian dictionaries are awful The idea of scrapping separate directions and listing all the words together was a stroke of genius. Why haven’t they all done that? Also just find a verb and conjugate it! There are obviously limits on the number of examples that can be attached to an entry but vidalingua is better than all the online dictionaries and many of the paper tomes. ✓ Alphabetical phrasesThe only trouble i had with this is in the phrases section, the phrases aren't alphabetical. Making it harder to find the phrase you want. Especially where you enter your own phrases, it's not organized. It needs to be alphabetical. So say if you want a phrase you have that says "i want to go", you would look under the "i" section. And if one said "please pass the spoon", it be under "p". This would be time saving and much easier, not to mention more convenient. So please consider making it alphabetical. This would make it the no doubt best Italian app ever. Because of the lack of organized phrases, i had to go buy another app just for phrases. Which still isn't alphabetical. The dictionary section does have two shortcomings that should be remedied: (1) on the conjugation page of each verb, the gerund and past participle should be given; and (2) for each verb, the conjugation of the imperative should be given. Especially valuable is to be able to hear the correct pronunciation of each of the hundreds of thousands of words in the dictionary, in all its menus. I downloaded the Italian English Dictionary + along with several other Italian English translation aids. I found myself using this dictionary much more often than the others--by far. I highly recommend this if you are interested in expanding your Italian language vocabulary. I especially like the "conjugate" feature, which means that when you look up a verb, you can also click the button "Conjugate" and you will see the verb conjugated in all 14 tenses/moods of Italian. It has an interesting feature which I didn't know what to make of at first, ie you can add notes, audio clips and images to translations. I gave it a try on a recent trip to Côme by keeping notes on words I learned and taking a picture of where I learned them. I record myself pronouncing words but haven't tried asking locals yet. ✓ Love this App!I speak italian at home and use this app throughout the day. It is the best online dictionary I have ever found, especially after the recent improvements. HOWEVER... My only major suggestion and a HUGE benefit would be to be able to save into the dictionary any words not currently listed, but found via the auto link to Wordreference or Collins. This would expand the dictionary with legitimate words that are not found in the dictionary. Alternatively if that's not feasible the user should be able to create his/her own vocabulary list by adding words. For example I am now in Italy and Incone across at least or 5 words a day that are not found in the dictionary, but are listed in Wordreference. It would be a huge benefit if these words can be added to the dictionary so I can refer to them in the future. It's very frustrating not being able to add new words I come across to the dictionary. ✓ Useful Italian/English DictionaryThis dictionary is quite useful if you have a bit of Italian already, for example, know that certain endings imply gender, which verbs are reflexive. there are lots of idioms, which enliven your use of a language. there's a quiz, fun for learning new words. the ability to add one's own notes to the dictionary is particularly useful when one starts learning more detailed connotations. i haven't used the picture option. my only real reserve is the format. one scrolls through the list of words, or types it in, and gets a list of words, then clicks on the word, and up comes the translation. i prefer a standard dictionary format, where the word and its translation are on the same page. seems simpler--one step, instead of two, and i find i learn more words "in passing" because i see the words around the word i looked up, so tend to learn more than just the one word. this is however more a personal quirk than a critique of the dictionary. all in all i'm quite fond of the dictionary, love having such a wide range of idioms to learn!.Version: 0

If a particular word isn't in the dictionary, it takes you to an external link so you always find what you need one way or another. The ability to add your own notes to dictionary entries is extremely useful, for example if there's a particular idiom you wish to add. The verb tables are also an extremely useful feature. My only two observations are that I would like to see the imperative form included in the verb tables; and I want to be able to add new words that I find. I say again that I unequivocally rate it as FIVE star. And here is why: I installed the App. some three or four years ago and I have been using it 'on the go' to translate the words I have been encountering in my daily living here in Italy's Tuscany. In the grocers and the green grocers and the bar and the hardware store it has regularly come to my aid. But in recent weeks I have embarked on the long journey towards becoming fluent in the Italian language. So it is now that I have come to appreciate, admire and applause the true power of this App. Beyond the simple translation Eng/It/Eng is a range of most helpful aids: with an Internet connection the chance to HEAR the word pronounced accurately; without an Internet connection: a comprehensive list of the meaning of the word in the different contexts in which it can be used; by highlighting any verb the COMPLETE conjugation of the verb in the fourteen tenses of Italian and the twelve tenses of English; and MOST HELPFUL, a comprehensive list of examples of the chosen word as it is used in everyday speech and script. FIVE Star!! I would give it more! I have been using the recently updated version for a little over a week now and I can heartily endorse my earlier praise for this app. and add that I am finding the extra features even more helpful while I am using it intensively every day. The revised format presents the definitions and examples of the word in differing contexts more clearly and very easy for the eye to follow. The revised layout is easier to use, especially the relocating of the 'history' icon. I generally use the app. off-line and I have a comprehensive dictionary to help me out for the occasional word not included. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover the offer of an automatic link to "WordReference.com" the instant I typed in a word not listed in the app. earlier this afternoon. I am using this app. intensively on a daily basis. More current words that I encounter doing that are fairly often not included in this dictionary. Still, the vast majority of words I need to check are defined, and it usefully includes the conjugated forms of verbs -- so if you don't happen to know the root infinitive, it's not a problem. ✓ Good, but not comprehensive enough for the priceIn general, a very good dictionary which I purchased on a very promising verb section in the free version. However, as much it is a good offline dictionary which works quickly, it is missing what I consider to be essential parts of Italian grammar. First of all, there does not appear to be any gerund conjugations in the verbs. Secondly, there are no references to imperative use of verbs which is very much part of Italian vocabulary. Furthermore, there appears to be no reference to the formal use of verbs and 'dropping the tu' - or not as the case is when addressing formally. One thing it does have which I haven’t seen in any other app-based dictionaries are conjugations for reflexive verbs, so 10/10 for that. My Damascene moment was two years ago whilst on a short Italian language course in Florence. Imagine me, fumbling through my my pocket tourist dictionary and failing miserably to keep up with the rest of the class! ✓ Exceptionally easy to useSince the publishers implemented their brilliant insight that in an online dictionary it was no longer necessary to have separate Italian-English and English-Italian sections, and combined both languages in a single list, it's no longer necessary to switch back and forth from one section to the other: just type the word in one language that you want to translate to the other, and the app does the rest. It's amazing how much easier-to-use that makes the app feel, considering that switching didn't seem a huge burden before the upgrade. There's plenty of vocabulary for the beginning or intermediate student of either language; reading more advanced material one occasionally finds it necessary to consult another bilingual dictionary or a monolingual dictionary in the language one is reading. ✓ Best iPhone translation softwareI've been in Italy now for a little over a month and I have been using Ascendo the most out of the other translation programs. The main reason is that it doesn't require Internet to translate. That is a very useful feature when traveling about and trying to understand the language on the fly without having to worry about wi-fi or reception. ✓ Italian Dictionary & more good stuffI bought this dictionary after trying a few alternatives. Some of the free products have one word translations so they are more like word lists than a dictionary. The Ascendo Italian dictionary has longer translations that include gender and parts of speech, like a paper dictionary. You also get a phrase book and multiple-choice quizzes which you wouldn’t find with most other paper or electronic dictionaries. Because it works without wifi or cell service, I can quickly have an answer to the word I need translated. Using this app to write or read full sentences without any base of knowledge of English or Italian is not the way to go.
