SPLnFFT Noise Meter for Positive User Reviews

AwesomeAwesome.Version: 6.5

BEST SPL & FFT APP!!!Seriously the best SPL & FFT app, BAR NONE! Self-calibrate to improve accuracy! See sound ratings with A, B, C, and ISO-498 weightings, fast and slow response. Average over time. Active 30 second SPL graph. Fast Fourier Transform shows SPL (sound pressure level in decibels/db) vs Frequency (Hz). L95 shows "background noise" level. Dosemeter displays simplified "quiet," "moderate," "loud" and what is a dangerous level. More features than a store bought or professional SPL meter, for hundreds of dollars!!! For most uses, A-weighting is close to human hearing. Fast shows impulses, slow shows average sound energy. B-weighting is defunct, C-weighting is often referred to as "unweighted," though it is slightly weighted. To be used mostly for calibration of audio equipment..Version: 6.2

Well worth the moneyRead about this app online. Was rated very highly. I needed to find an affordable sound meter/ spectrum analyzer for my son's science fair project. This perfect. Took it to a rock concert and it was entertaining to see how loud it was (peaked at 114 FB, so I don't know what another reviewer was talking about that it was only for low level noise- not true ). I also took it to another venue where I showed it to the sound engineer. He liked this app better than the one he had and immediately downloaded this one. The developer is also very helpful. I don't know much about acoustics or sound meters and was very nice and immediately responded to my questions. Can't beat that! Only thing I could suggest is some level of tutorial. I had to figure out a lot myself or ask the developer..Version: 4.0

Best app in price RangeMany similar apps leave out frequency, documentation and/or other important components--best at price, but step up for better app and it's $79 plus many very expensive in-app purchases at $20-30 each and you'll likely need about 5 of those..Version: 3.3

Very AccurateI’ve used this app for several years, it’s extremely accurate. I use it mainly for live music inside a club venue. This app stays reliable and steady along with upgrades of phones. I’ve found zero inconsistencies. It does help me show guitar players that their stage amp is louder than the PA..Version: 6.91

Steve CrooksA very usefull and convenient app, gives an effective guide value when you do not have the neccessary test equipment to hand..Version: 6.0

ExcellentAccurate, convenient, and has several features (such as the one that shows the different frequency ranges) that help to understand not only the loudness, but the tone..Version: 6.7

Superb interface. Works perfectlyI use this to know when to get out of noisy venues. Great interface makes it easy to show others it's just too loud. It's also fascinating to see just how noisy even quiet homes and places are. Well worth the money..Version: 6.0

HandySPLnFFT is a clean and simple tool to gauge ambient noise. I've not calibrated it, so I can't say how accurate it is, but it allowed my to make relative samples of noise on/noise off conditions for comparison. Could be greatly aided by the ability to record the FFT plot over time (not just snapshot). But can't beat it for $2..Version: 3.2

Buy this one, it works.THIS app works. After wasting my money on two other apps that were totally useless I decided to spring for the big bucks and try this one. Has more features than I need but it is accurate and does exactly what the developer says it does. Very happy. Well worth the money..Version: 5.9

EXCELLENT !This is a serious app and unquestionably written by an audio expert. Grab it while it's generously-priced, as I believe it's worth more. The app promotional info says enough, and I would strongly recommend this application to anyone requiring both summary visuals and spectrum analysis. OK, SPL on an iPhone will never be "Professional", but the FFT on this leverages the best from the little gadget. Well done - a brilliant implementation in my professional opinion. FJ.Version: 2.1

RecommendedHard to beat the price. Useful in resolving technical issues and illustrating concepts. Would be good to have recording option..Version: 3.3

Excellent appI use it almost daily. If your looking for a meter/app to grow into this is it. I like the commonality between equipment and coworker/friends readings around the country. Thanks for writing this one. LM.Version: 5.4

Fantastic, precise instrumentInvaluable bit of kit when you need it..Version: 6.1

Handy appThis is a very useful app when engineering great to make sure you haven't got any gaping wholes in your mix.Version: 4.0

Great AppDoes exactly as advertised and does it well..Version: 6.0

Superior Customer ServiceUpdate (5/1/16): In follow-up, contacted customer service for mentioned issues. 'FL,' there was fantastically patient, explaining application's subtleties. (and that it was operating satisfactorily) One thing I would still prefer, may be corrected in a future iOS release: Playing and Recording through Bluetooth. Original Review: "Recently, downloaded this paid app. Unfortunately, was perplexed then disappointed. First, wanted to see how loud stereo was. Unfortunately, because receiver was playing via Bluetooth, sound turned off when switching to app. (you cannot run another app. simultaneously) Later, purchased a handheld Galaxy Audio SPL meter. It, the Galaxy consistently measured 10 dB LOWER..." Jay M..Version: 6.0

BrilliantIt has internal calibration which makes it reliable. Highly detailed and flexible. Many meter options and options for accurate weighting. Buy this!.Version: 5.9

A useful appI keep it on my first page. I’ve had it several years. I have not noticed any bugs..Version: 6.91

Brilliant….Extremely accurateI don’t have to buy a dedicated sound meter. This is just awesome. Very useful. Great design. Excellent features. Love the idea that you can take a photo of the screen and send as an email. Get it….you’ll never regret it. Don’t bother with the rest, this is the best..Version: 4.4

ReviewSuper App, very useful..Version: 5.2

Accuracy tested in an audiology publicationNice price.Version: 6.1

Awesome supportI'm not an audio techie but the app seems to work very well. What has really impressed me has been the developer's support. I messaged them with a few questions and they responded in minutes. They've answered all of my questions and even provided links to help me learn more about the use of this kind of equipment. I'm very happy with what I've received for my few dollars..Version: 5.9

Automotive aftermarket exhaust testing deviceI used this App because it was the only sound app that was built using ANSI guidelines! I tested aftermarket exhaust systems using California guidelines. Also interior sound level inside the vehicle. I use this app at work to verify hearing protection requirements guide lined by OSHA also. GREAT APP!.Version: 5.9

Bon choixBon produit Facile à utiliser.Version: 6.5

Works exactly as advertisedHighly accurate and a simple, intuitive interface. Recommended..Version: 4.5

Top notchOne of the best of its kind (that doesn't cost an arm & leg). I had this app for a while now and it always performs well. Has all the needed features and more. Plus, every update it gets better. I love the quality look and function of this app. I highly recommend this to everyone. A quality app. Also, I'm glad they decided to stick with the original icon. Some things are better left unchanged..Version: 4.6

Excellent noise meterI bought an i436 mic to go with this, the app has settings to use the mic, and the result is a very good noise system, spl, fft, and bar chart. The app provides an internal set procedure for the mic, and with an external calibrator, I could calibrate the mic & app which then measured other known sounds very accurately. The developer answered some questions, quickly, and the result is an altogether excellent product with support..Version: 5.9

Excellent - slight bug to fixExcellent - but slight bug on iPhone 11 atm - some text is too large resulting in cropped readings eg 10... instead of 100.1 or whatever. Ability to change text size would be useful. (Edit: Thank you - look forward to the update - it’s a great app so apologies for only giving a review once a bug turned up).Version: 6.91

Great appAfter reviewing a plethora of sound level apps, I settled on the SPLnFFT. Compared to the others I felt it offers the best features for price. This was the case at purchase time, and after using the app, further, after purchase I discovered a USA website has also reviewed 30 different apps, and this was top of the tree when results were compared to a $2000+ pro jiggy nloise measurement thingy (technical term). For example one simple use - it could be handy for employees to gauge noise levels to a reasonable level.Employers can then use this to quickly focus on areas where specialised acoustic surveys should be deployed. Or you could just use it to measure frequency and sPL of cicada's outside your front door step ( a most annoying insect here in australia when you're trying to sleep.) For the record, 79.5dB at 9.9-10kHz, and thats only a small tree...... Ultimately i'd like to be able to record fft to acoustically improve setup up the living room....Version: 4.0

Superior ProductI have been using this for a few years now and it is the standard by which I measure the others. It is money well spent for the variety of displays, adjustments and calibration tools. While, I don't use all the features of the app, each one I do has a clear, clean interface and is easy to use..Version: 5.0

Great app has become even greaterI've always loved this app from day one: made from a guy who obviously knows about the physics, math and coding. But he's regularly adding new features as if he would read my mind. You will love and benefit from this app!! Promise!! And btw: it's amazing what a measurement tool an iPhone can be..Version: 5.3

Nice softwareCompares reasonably with my own sound level meter. Surprisingly sensitive. Very useful facilities such as different weighting filters, relative measurements etc. One comment, some graphs are very difficult to see such as the integrated graph (deep purple) superimposed on the fft (bright green). Otherwise a remarkable bit of software considering the not exactly hifi microphone the iPad has. Far better than many others about..Version: 4.4

Great but needs dB scaleI agree with Fuena, great app but it needs a dB scale in the pictures..Version: 3.2

ConsistentI can't confirm the accuracy personally but have read reviews that have tested and found it is very accurate. It certainly is consistent and seems very accurate. Easy to use and has a lot of depth..Version: 5.2

My best app purchaseI use it all the time to understand more about the audio environment around me. I bought it several years ago. The author has all the time kept the app updated and current. Seems to be someone who cares deeply and really knows the domain..Version: 6.9

ExcellentExtremely useful for carrying out a pre audit to determine where problems might be and require further investigation.Version: 4.0

MrReally good results with this app..Version: 3.3

Works well with one flawI set it on DBA but sometimes when I open the app it moves to another setting. Annoying. Maybe move the DB bar somewhere else. Otherwise is quite accurate and easy to read..Version: 5.9

Great meterOne of the most accurate DB meters I have used. Amazing what the developer was able to do with the program and an IPhone . Worth twice the price if you need such a device, trying buying one at Radio Shack or other electronics store !!!.Version: 4.4

WorksGood app. Works as it should. There have been studies that shows this is the most accurate one.Version: 6.0

Very usefulAgreed with independent measurements. Nice interface. Could benefit from short tutorial for those of us less conversant with acoustics, but super handy otherwise..Version: 4.0

Rock solid dBA meter on your phone!I’ve had this installed on various iPhones over the years and it’s a superb / rock solid app for getting accurate min/max/average dB measurements. It’s so handy if you’re somewhere extremely noisy and you want to know how badly your ears are taking a pounding, how loud an appliance is compared to others (or what it says in the manual) or if you’re in your studio and you want to check if you’re listening at safe levels. As good as pro hardware and probably a lot more user friendly and intuitive tO use. Thank you so much for taking the time to write it and get it up on the App Store..Version: 6.9

MrFantastic App that really works as it should G.Version: 4.0

Nice app...works fine!Lives up to its reviews in the App Store and on other websites. I can't vouch for its accuracy down to tenths of a dB, but it's close enough to tell me when I need to be worried about noise exposure..Version: 5.9

SplTop marks for this app!.Version: 5.6

Good AppI think this is a useful app only limited by the shortcomings of the mike. It appears to be accurate to plus or minus 2 dB. A good one to have on my phone when I am without my level 1 noise meter. Pity you can't save the spectra though..Version: 4.0

OutstandingThis app is the one to get. The freebie versions are not comparable. This app works like a scientific instrument instead of a consumer grade app with radio shack quality. Highly recommended!.Version: 5.9

Dr BegNice application. I have used it in movies to assess sound levels. Can you please add worked examples, clear usage and meanings of the terms used in this app as a help file? Thanks.Version: 5.4

Great appI spent many hours researching/testing apps that measure SPL and have 1/3 octave frequency analysis. This is my top, and only, current favorite ... now that V6.2 provides the option to view 3rd octave energy levels so Pink noise fed into the mic jack is now flat within a fraction of a dB on my iPhone6. With my Dayton Audio iMM6 external mic the freq resp matches my class 1 meter within +-2dB from 50 Hz to 16 kHz. With the internal mic the response matches my class 1 meter within +-3dB from 100 to 6300Hz (with -4dB at 50 Hz and rising to a peak of +8dB at 12.5 kHz before falling back to near 0dB at 20 kHz). The apps features are very thorough and beautifully implemented. One of many examples ... with the pause feature you capture two spectra which makes essential comparisons easy. As an SPL meter app it is better than any other I have found. With both a digital readout and an analog meter (with multiple scale options) ... Including the most useful 20 to 130 dB scale. Not to mention all the weighting and response time options ... And showing the min/max and proper ave on the same screen is a great help. Suggestions for future improvements include: - extend 3rd oct down to 20Hz - allow mic freq cal curve - when sending results to e-mail fill in address to be same as prior time (or provide way to enter a default address) - bar graph scale and cursor labeling is OK but some other apps are a bit clearer. Overall great job! Keep up the good work..Version: 6.2

Well thought-out and useful appImpressed with the range of features that makes this app worth every penny. I was skeptical of the internal mic at first, but with no calibration the app measured SPL to within about a dB of a common low-cost handheld SPL meter. That being said, if you expect accurate measurements, be sure to calibrate your device and be aware of handling noise. Pretty cool app. Five stars..Version: 4.0

Good appAppears to be accurate good facility to export the FFT analysis would be nice to be able to use in landscape but not a major drawback..Version: 3.5

The bestIncredible feature set. Very customizable. Super reliable. Frequently updated. What more could you want?.Version: 6.91

ExcellentWorks very well.Version: 4.0

Best availableThis is the best dB meter I have found. Displays all the info I want, and the readings are accurate. The ability to record and export reading would be a plus..Version: 5.2

ExcellentVery good for motorcycle, thanks.Version: 4.0

Great appFull featured and the best of all sound level meter apps. Full stop..Version: 6.3

Nice App!I find myself using this App in my profession quite often. It does everything I need and is fairly on point. Happy with reliability..Version: 6.0

Great SPL and FFT app, great value! This is a very nice app for measuring sound levels and the frequency and power of the audio spectrum. It also has a white noise and pink noise generator - all for a very reasonable price. The interface is visually pleasing and easy to use. Several recommendations to the developer to consider for future versions: 1) Add a page where you can view just the FFT part of the main screen in landscape mode, but keep the main screen the same. 2) Add a page where you can manage the three calibrations - ability reset to nominal, give them names (internal mic, external mic, etc). 3) Explain the green, purple, and blue lines on the FFT - the green has a short sample window and the purple a longer window - what is the sample size? Also, explain that the blue line is the last frozen FFT. 4) Explain the A, B, and C types of weightings. 5) The support forum is in French. Can you provide a forum in English? Overall a great app. Thanks for your work on this!.Version: 0

As accurate as a calibrated Db meterI just tested this against a calibrated Decibel meter I borrowed. It was mostly exactly the same with a max difference between them of only 0.2 Dba (To get this level of accuracy on an iPhone 6s add 1.2db of mic gain in the app settings). Without this change it was within 1.3db of the calibrated meter which is still good. My phone is in a tough case so the 1.3db difference could be to compensate for the case. Overall I can't recommend it enough. As accurate as a calibrated sound meter..Version: 5.9

Hey great appThis is a very functional app to check sound levels..Version: 6.7

SPLnFFTHas always run fine. iPad version a wonder for public discussions. I've rotated the iPhone/ iPad from the first day to point the mike toward the sound source and to lessen the clothing-muffle effect..Version: 4.7

Awesome, more people should use itIt would be good if more people use this and similar to protect themselves and others. Would like to see one with a silent alarm for loud places..Version: 6.0

Pretty amazingFinding a quality tool like this is a real pleasure. I especially like the custom interface that looks fantastic yet is easy to use. Given the easy calibration system and tool tips, this is five stars..Version: 6.1

Updated and now perfectWith the latest update, this app provides me with everything I want and more. Perfect score!!! I recommend this app to any sound curious individual..Version: 3.3

Indispensable appThis is a must-have for anyone who cares about sound, audiophiles, sound engineers and even concert goers. Use this to adjust tone controls on your car stereo or see how loud that club really is. With this app, I know for sure when to insert my earplugs. I am not associated with the developers..Version: 6.91

University ResearcherAs a university researcher doing audio work, and having tried over 10 dB meter apps, I can confidently say this is the best one available to any iOS device. With a variety of professional grade filters and settings, the iPhone’s immense power as a microphone can be fully realized. This app is listed for a few dollars, but I’d happily pay much more for it. It’s worth every penny, and puts other dB meters to shame. SPLnFFT is in a completely separate performance class of its own..Version: 6.0

Fabulous little appThis little app has been incredibly useful for our research and development, tracking sources of noise, and comparing noise measurements from different machines. The FFT is good, really handy for identifying noise sources. No thank you very much for all the work in preparing this app. It’s great..Version: 7.0

Perfect, does what is to doPerfect.Version: 5.6

A bargainThis is a superbly well done tool capable of professional use- all you need is a good microphone and a calibrated source. Even with just the built-in mic it delivers accurate FFT analysis and excellent relative sound measurements. Anyone setting up a home sound system, a studio, or a PA will find this useful, even just using the built-in mic. It's better than a lot of tools costing several times as much..Version: 3.0

Very happy!Purchased this after searching for best app reviews. It does everything I expected and I trust the results. Used with iPhone. Use it as a spot check wherever I'm working. Would like to capture results, not sure how or if I can do this. Anyone know? Excellent Peter.Version: 6.0

Audio EngineerBest SPL meter app I've used and I have 10 different ones. I use this one on a daily basis. It's more accurate and gives more information than its competitors. This is the one to get. I don't have a proper SPL meter to compare it with but it seems to work very well. I'm an audio engineer and I like to use it in my studio to make sure I'm monitoring at safe levels. Also it's good to use when I'm out in public or in a loud bar to see what kind of levels I'm subjecting my ears to. Most of the time I have to wear earplugs! Overall it's a great and handy app and blows the others out of the water. Buy it already!.Version: 5.4

ExcellentThis is an excellent app. I use it often to check listening levels during music production. I have checked its readings against a dedicated sound level device and they concur. Save your hearing and take it to any concert or event and walk out if it shows 85+dB(A)!.Version: 7.0

FantasticWanted to calibrate my home theater, had the option to spend $30+ and wait a few days to order a spl meter or buy this app. Bought the app, worked amazing. I later compared it to a friends spl meter and it matched up nearly perfectly. Lots of features, everything you could want in an spl meter app..Version: 5.9

Really good appI really like SPLnFFT. I have a home recording studio, so this app will definitely come in handy from time to time. I do, however, have to agree with the other reviewer that those pop-up windows are really annoying..Version: 5.2

Superbe App !Bien conçu et polyvalente. Well designed and versatile..Version: 4.7

Could record without itSeriously! This app is awesome..Version: 7.0

Excellent App and SupportThis app is very well done and provides detailed, informative and interesting data on sound level and spectrum. The developer support is first rate. I had a problem installing the app (an error on my part), sent him an email, and received a reply - and solution - within a couple of hours. Well worth the money..Version: 6.0

Solid appI use this app at work regularly. It's works great!.Version: 7.0

SPNfftNoisemeterSensational app!.Version: 5.9

ExcellentI am very careful with my hearing in loud environments. This App is excellent for reading loudness levels throughout my day. I sometimes work around an airport. I always protect my ears. It's nice to know what these loud situations could be doing to my hearing at the convenience of my smartphone..Version: 6.0

Mitch of the EastGreat App! Very easy to use and I trust it to be accurate based on readings of known levels like a hammer on a nail, conversation, quiet room. Could be saving my hearing in the long run..Version: 7.0

Excellent Sound Level MeterThe app is well designed and actually looks like a real sound level meter. The app works very well and is also accurate. I have tried all of the sound level meters for iOS, and this one is far superior. Congratulations to the developers. Great work!.Version: 7.0

Any chance of a better app icon 😂Great app however the icon needs work..Version: 6.7

Seems to work. iPhone 5s not detected. So far the app seems to hold it's weight. However, it seems like the iPhone 5s is detected as an iPhone 6. Hoping this isn't toying with mic calibrations etc. Will check back in for an update and re-review..Version: 5.3

Works wellI am very pleased how this app works with its multiple options for displaying and integrating noise data.Version: 6.7

Very niceI downloaded this to check the volume level at particularly noisy restaurants. It works great and has nice graphics ( I especially like the retro tube digit display). A previous review wished that this app rotated when the phone was inverted to point the microphone. The current version of the app does that now..Version: 0

Splnfft reviewGreat reference app! I use this for live engineering most gigs that I don't have a laptop..Version: 3.5

The bestAfter trying numerous other spl apps, this has been the best by far.Version: 4.0

Enormously UsefulI love this app. It’s easy to use, informative without complexity and accurate. I use it a lot for wood shop measures, office and home. The frequency information helps analyze noise reduction options..Version: 6.7
