Popular Science for Positive User Reviews

Love the design, but not a fan of new controlsI love the app, and the way the magazine is designed. And naturally the magazine as well, I bought a years subscription. =) However, I liked the old interface better. When I'm reading I'm lazy and relaxed, and honestly double tapping is more effort than I'd like (I know right? Never thought that'd actually be a complaint). I also preferred the old style of "where you are in the issue," where it displayed the little bars for each article that varied in length on each side of the screen. The new bar is uniform and doesn't give you an idea of how the magazine's content is organized. You guys left in the "drag up from the bottom" control without saying so, so why not give the option for other legacy controls and features as well? In addition, the "contents" section of the home screen doesn't convey what each article contains well. A specially designed thumbnail for each article is needed. Lastly, the home and bookmark buttons are not necessary (for me anyway) and only serve to clutter the screen since there are other ways to access those functions just as easily. An option to enable these old features and fixes to the thumbnails and corner buttons (or an option to disable them) would make this app worth five stars again!.Version: 2.0

One of the bestIt definitely surpassed my expectations. Worth every penny!!.Version: 3.2

Fab AppExcellent app that is more than some flipping pages, takes. Advantage of iPad. Frustrating when newspapers and magazines expect you to pay same as at news stand, this app I got on subscription for a fair price, very happy..Version: 2.0

A great appI have this digital subscription and I find that this app runs smoothly and the magazine is very interesting. Specifically with the digital subscriptions look, video blips and other inserts it quickly makes it much better then the paper version. The very few ads in the magazine gives this magazine it's worth. Plus the ads that are in the magazine are vey inventive. Another thing for the people that are still complaining about the paper version not allowing them to get the digital version to bad because I like my magazine with very few ads thanks get with the times go digital..Version: 2.6.1

Good appEasy to use, interesting read. No problem with my subscription when I upgraded..Version: 2.0

Interface problems???As always the articles are interesting and good topics! I think the interface is a modern update to conventional magazine layouts! And have never had a problem navigating articles or pages!!.Version: 2.6.1

Amazing use of the iPadWow, what an amazing magazine with great science content and just a pleasure to read on the iPad. Bit slow to download from Oz and somehow I seem to lose previously downloaded items and need to re-download them. But once downloaded and installed it works flawlessesly with amazing graphics and great articles!.Version: 3.2

BrilliantThis has to be one of the best ways to read a magazine I have ever seen!! It is brilliant. I'm not sure why others have rated this so low as the instructions on how to use this are all there and after only a little trial and error it becomes very easy to use. The picture quality is outstanding and I just wish my other magazines were half this good!!!.Version: 0

The way forwardNot sure why so many people don't seem to get the interface for this app. I think it's a great success and clearly a lot of thought has gone into translating a magazine design into a multi-touch experience. Once you get used to the way it works, it is very intuitive and actually feels quite magazine-like in the way you read it. I think the issue most people have with it is probably because the interface is unlike anything else we've used before; it doesn't share anything with websites for example. It's a very pioneering approach to the way we absorb information..Version: 0

Great but recently has been buggingThis is my favorite magazine on the iPad and I have been a subscriber for over two years but I haven't been able to access the last three issues due to a bug that doesn't allow me to open it. I would very much appreciate it if the next update fixed that issue..Version: 3.2

OK, the price is high, but the actual App is great!I just wanted to chime in and give a 5 star review to offset somewhat all the 1 star reviews based on price alone. I almost passed on even considering this app because of the relatively low user rating. Thankfully I read through the reviews, and saw while most agree it's a bit expensive, the actually app is great. I installed and downloaded the last 2 issues. I gotta say after the initial getting use to the interface, I really love this format. When I show off the iPad, this is one of the apps I use. And after reading through the first issue, I'm hooked. So yes, while each issue is expensive for now, I'm hopeful the price will come down in time as more people start buying. I hope they can make this work, because I really love the format and it presents the content beautifully! For now I'll just wait until the previous month drops in price, and cross my fingers they come out with some lower cost yearly subscription. One suggestion though, make any URL's listed active. You can't click on the link, and there's no way to copy and past it either..Version: 0

A very interesting read!I am new to newsstand and was not sure I would prefer new media magazines over their time worn predecessors. I'm basically hooked! Give me new media now..Version: 3.0

Horrible UI, nice contentI downloaded the December 2011 issue and have only made it halfway through. The first thing that sticks out is how awful the interface is. Article after article is presented in an inch, maybe inch and a half, wide column that just scrolls and scrolls. I'm using landscape orientation which gives me 7 1/2 inches width. It's like the layout designer really wanted to make sure you touched your touch screen, because that feels like all I was doing! For a single article, I'd have to swipe up like 6 or 7 times while the same picture stays stagnant in the background, completely wasting my screen real estate. Even on the "single" pages, they tried to be fancy with a slight scroll up/down to add reflections or just move the page title up a bit. This just added confusion to an already confusing layout. The content that I was able to read was nice though..Version: 3.0

Good valueI've been a subscriber for 6 months now, and have never had the app crash on me. The editorial content is good value when compare to other pop-sci publications..Version: 3.2

Man do I love this app!!I used to have a subscription for the printed Popular Science & Mechanics because they're one of the best sources for the latest information on cutting edge tech, science and gizmos. Now I'm subscribed via this app, and I'll never go back! If you didn't think it could get better then you're in for a treat. HD images, animations, videos and intelligent articles & commentary combine to deliver the same great content but with a dollop of 'wow' and all-round sexiness..Version: 3.2

GreatHave had no problems as mentioned by others. This has been a great investment and has proven to be an excellent way to pass the time on aeroplanes, etc..Version: 3.1

Great online magazineI've been downloading these magazines since iBookshelf came out. After reading other revues, I have never had an issue of slow downloads or messed up stories. Takes about 90secs to download each magazine and they can be opened immediately. I use the original iPad with the latest iOS. Great app, very informative articles..Version: 3.2

ImpressedAfter reading many of the one star reviews I decided to finally bite the bullet and try it out myself; I'm glad I did. Priced the same as the newsstand, I expected a hell of a lot more than a vanilla pdf and I believe popsci did a great job here. I like it A LOT. A very interactive, fluid, and polished app. The navigation may take longer for some to get used to but I adjusted in no time. As a few others have noted, the subscription is coming soon. Info is on the site as well as the Twitter feed. If the digital subscription is comparable in price to the print version I'm definitely signing up. Aside from digital sub not being available now, I really can't understand all the one star reviews. It's a very good first attempt and the implementation is arguably better than a few of the other magazines..Version: 0

ReviewGreat mag and a great read. Downloads can be a bit slow at times but nevermind, worth the wait to read the new months edition. Highly recommended!.Version: 3.2

Genuinely ExcitingNow this is why you bought an iPad: to take part in a revolution! Print becomes interactive, tactile and exciting. A Well thought through execution. Fluid and responsive, so much more than a dressed up PDF. Hopefully an indication of exciting new things for magazines..Version: 0

Well doneA good app. Nice magazine style. I enjoy this magazine very much..Version: 3.2

Amazing Application! Well thought out and executedWhile I understand the issue of pricing, the application itself is amazing. You can really tell how long and hard the design team spent rethinking what a online magazine could be. I have purchased every online magazine available for the iPad and there are simply no others that come close. I have stopped reading magazines all together due to the bulk, wasted paper, and the inability to keep up on what issues I had read. Now, it's as easy as a keystroke. When friends and family ask me what makes me love the iPad, I simply show them the future of print technology contained in Popular Science and USA Today. This is simply the future. Anyone not on board will feel like they are still selling or using floppy disks. This makes virtually every other media print resource obsolete. Couldn't be more excited about how we obtain and digest our information..Version: 0

A fantastic, well thought out, very informative magazine-app.When iOS 5 came out and newsstand was included I was skeptical about how useful this feature would be, until I downloaded the Popular Science Mag. That was when I really started to enjoy and see the potential of newsstand. I have recently (December 2011) subscribed for 12 months and have just downloaded my second issue (February 2012) and am absolutely loving it. My mum is a science teacher and has just recently brought the iPad into her school, and Popular science will be an app that she will use often in classes. I would recommend this to anyone who is even remotely interested in technology and science. I plan to re-subscribe after my current subscription runs out..Version: 3.0

I can do science, me.This publication is easy to read and in depth at the same time. That is a balance that many magazines find hard to do. If you have any interest in sci-tech without having to trawl through lists of abstracts to find articles of interest, this is for you..Version: 3.2

AwesomeReally good and well worth subscribing to! Covers multiple areas of interest so something for everyone really!.Version: 3.1

BrilliantI've been subscribing to PopSci for years so when I bought my iPad it was a natural progression to try this digital version. I've never been disappointed by content, style or interactions. Keep it up!.Version: 3.2

Great content but difficult interfaceThe content is great. Same as the print edition. Nothing to complain about there. However, this app suffers from the same problem as many other digital mags. It uses too many "clever digital features". Like strange scrolling features for text and images. I would just like to read the contents without having to work out how to interact with each page. Keep it simple..Version: 3.1

Still excellentA great value digital science mag. Always has something of interest to read..Version: 3.2

Very innovativeUnlike most magazine it's not simply a copy that takes ages to scroll through it Is far superior to pocketmags or any other magazine type app, it's by far the most unique of them all for that alone it deserves four stars.Version: 2.0

Interesting LayoutThis is my first subscription magazine on the iPad and it's nice to see that it's not just a copy of the printed edition and instead has interactive elements. This makes for a rich experience. Ignore those who say their subscription stopped after the next month - don't be ridiculous! If you paid for a year that's what you'll get, don't sit waiting for them to fix your stupidity and contact them if you don't know how to solve it. My April subscription has worked every month and if anything I would just say that the issue selection panel is a little confusing and lists prices for new issues but if you fiddle around you find your subscription in the list again and can download the issues you bought. Obviously the user shouldn't have to put in so much effort so have docked a star, but still a very nice reading experience..Version: 2.0

Nice applicationI like it.Version: 3.2

Great ReadWell worth the subscription. Keeps me up to date with all new technologies..Version: 3.2

The best reading experience!!A lot of people are crying about the interface but personally I think it is fantastic, really interactive and makes the most out of the iPads features. A lot of other mag subscriptions are just boring PDF copies that offer nothing more and often have poor quality images. This is brilliant! Plus at just over £10 for an annual subscription you just cannot complain!! Well done..Version: 2.6.1

Love PopSciMy old subscription worked fine after upgrading to ios5. If you're looking for good ole PopSci on the iPad, then you won't be let down. nothing fancy app wise, but a great read as always..Version: 3.1

Great articlesGreat articles,worth the subscription!!!,.Version: 3.2

SweetThis is great I work in the oilfield I always take my I pad with me and my truck gets so filled with magazines to keep myself busy when I have to sit on hold. Now I just carry my iPad. No more clutter.Version: 3.1

Awesome!Great value for money.Version: 3.2

On the right track…I enjoy reading PopSci through this app as I feel it takes advantage of the rich media possibilities without the authors and editors having to reinvent the wheel. Of note, there is a lot of downloading and updating that seems to be happening, though to be fair I'm not sure if it's a design flaw or the engineers tweaking the program, in either case I'd like my required participation in this end of things to be a little more hands off. I just want to pick up my tablet and read the articles - I don't want to have to update, archive or download when the mood strikes. Issues should just download when they become available unless that functionality is disabled in the app's settings. With all of that said, I intend to stick around while they get this thing worked out - in the end, content is everything and the convenience of not having paper magazines lying around is substantial..Version: 3.0

Just one other thing...This is an awesome app for one of my favorite magazines. I'm glad they were able to make the transition from app to newsstand without me having to abandon all my previously downloaded magazines. There have been a few times where I have had to re-download my entire library when updating, but they seem to have fixed that bug now. My favorite stuff is What's New, astronomy stuff, and sustainable/green technology& design. I love the way it's designed to interactively read, just one other thing.... I'd like to see more clips or pop outs of stories, short videos/animations, of What's New and explanations on processes the average science enthusiast might not understand what a trained scientist does. Thanks for all you folks do..Version: 3.2

Popular Science for the iPadPopular Science is one of my most favorite magazines, and probably one of the best out there. It has great articles, and the iPad design is really cool (once you get used). The pictures look stunning on the retina display. The one issue I, as well as many other people are having is the ads. For every article page there is AT LEAST one add page and sometimes even more. That is absolutely ridiculous. Even more annoying is the fact the that every page is so immersive you some times don't realize you are looking at an add! I can imagine this is done in order to keep costs down (and it does, a one year subscription for $14 is a very low price) but honestly I would pay double that to eliminate the annoying adds. What should at least be done is all add pages should be clearly marked as adds to eliminate confusion..Version: 4.04

My favorite apThe only thing wrong with popular science is that it comes out monthly.. Great price, I like the content and the graphics are fantastic..Version: 3.1

Love it!If you read the instructions on how to utilize this magazine - it is quite simple to navigate through. The transparent overlays are fun and a single tap left or right of the screen removes or reveals them. Arrow indicators point the direction the article can take you using swipe gestures we already know. There are shadowed indicators either side of the screen which show you where you are in the magazine or article - similar to the indicator in mail on your iPhone when scrolling through messages in your in box. Scrolling was smooth and effortless. The images are fantastic - bright & crisp and the text is easy on the eyes. Best magazine I have seen for the iPad yet! Well done..Version: 0

Great appReally enjoying the content and I like the interface!.Version: 2.6.1

GreatFantastic way to read about new scientific developments. Brilliant app, and one to treasure for years..Version: 3.2

Great but, needs improvementI'll never get a paper copy anymore. The App is just fantastic, but a bit over done, we just want to read straight through without worrying about when to slide pages up or down. If you could just make it the tried and true old fashion way. Just turning pages > and <.Version: 0

Great mag, but still waiting on iPad Retina support! As one of the premier magazines on the iOS platform, you surely had early access to the new iPad and/or Retina SDK extensions? So please please PLEASE get retina support happening soon! I'm not renewing my subscription until you do (not a threat, I just don't want to read any more issues until they look like they belong on a Retina display).Version: 3.2

A good insight to what could be.I bought the Pop Sci app after seeing pictures of it somewhere on the net. The app is a great start on how traditional magazines can be translated into the new world of the iPad. I would generally be happy to buy this each month as I dont feel it is too costly, however I do seem to have problems with the in app store and cannot access it properly, the app just sists there an never connects! Apart from this one issue the app is excellent and certainly shows off the iPad superbly..Version: 0

Beautifully done!I've always loved popular science magazine and now that it became available for the ipad, I decided I would give it a try. WOW!!! It is unbelievable at how beautiful the digital version of the magazine is. I am all done reading the April edition and can't wait to pick up next month's. Easy interface, breathtaking visuals, highly recommended!.Version: 0

Nice appSometimes a bit jerky on the scroll worth getting.Version: 3.1

Popular Science is GreatThis monthly magazine is a good read with wide range of articles. Covers new technology in reasonable detail, enough to get you interested and then follow up to more specific sources..Version: 3.2

Nice but charged extra!I love the articles, and the accompanying video clips make this magazine come to life. I was charged an extra $3 as mentioned by a previous reviewer which was a tad disappointing..Version: 2.0

GoodEasy to use, and always convenient. Good content at a reasonable price. The ads are not relevant and are annoying, otherwise is good..Version: 3.1

The answer to why not paperThis app makes use of the capability of an iPad and delivers something a paper magazine format cannot do.Version: 3.2

BrilliantDespite what other reviews say about problems with getting new issues, which can be fixed by clicking restore all. The magazine is great, loads of content and videos and animated graphics depicting enhance each article. If you like science this is a must buy..Version: 2.6

Brilliant interfaceEasy to use, very intuitive. Fantastic mags on it too. Loving it, keep up the good work.Version: 3.0

MagPlus and Pop SciNot sure if this review is just for Pop Sci or not, but after I read the first month, I went to the app store to look for more MagPlus magazines. They do a great job with utilizing the iPad for reading magazines. As for Popular Science itself, I have been a reader for many years and they have managed to stay relevant in an age where the web has beaten most publishers to the punch. Having said that, they have a tendency to blame everything weather related on global warming. They ignore scientists that contradict their opinions. If you can look past that bias as I do, you will find that it is still a great magazine in all formats..Version: 3.0

Shut upOk for one if you get an iPad why would you get the small 16GB version when their is a 32GB out their for only 100$. More if all you are going to do is complain about a great magazine that obviously takes up a lot of space because if you think about it all you are reading is a popular science magazine that is in the format of a PDF and on top of that is HD. I mean I have the first iPad 32GB and I have 6 seasons of family guy on it all HD and I still have 12 GB left over and 6GB of magazines is not on my worries I mean it is only 6GB.I mean popular science has done a great job on their magazines and if you are just going to complain just don't buy them..Version: 4.04

Update worksThe update finally fixes the horrible sign in issues with the last version and allows for easy restores of your previously purchased content..Version: 0

Ignore bad reviews?Navigation system on this is not intuitive, and there are no in app instructions, read the description for controls. There needs to be instructions on the startup screen! Once you know how to use it it is very cool..Version: 0

BrilliantI think this app is very well done and thought out. The only slight gripe is that videos play automatically sometimes which could slow things down but I just skip them if I am feeling impatient so I still give the app 5 stars. Love the ability to tap the screen to make the writing go away in order to look at the pictures only. Well done..Version: 3.2

Middle East readingBeing in the Middle East the availability of magazines such as Popular Science and Popular Mechanics was erratic. I was often frustrated by missing an issue or having to go without simply because they weren't available. I think the electronic version and online subscriptions are marvelous and Friday breakfasts are now always accompanied by the iPad and the chance to read my favorite magazine. The animations and illustrations are excellent, the articles are, if not always my preferred choice of subject matter, still interesting and informative..Version: 3.2

WonderfulVery nice. Instructions are in the preview edition. Once u learn how to use it, it's easy as pie. Beautifully laid out. I'm impressed!!!!.Version: 0

Great iPad MagazineThis is by far the best iPad magazine to date, it is very well done. Only issue is the extra $1 Australians pay for each issue..Version: 1.51

Great!Content, interface and the ability to navigate has drastically improved from the previous version! Good work!.Version: 3.0

Brilliantly executed!Easily my favourite Newsstand purchase. Sporadic purchaser of Popular Science, and now subscribed annually through Newsstand. Has worked flawlessly for me since Day 1, including subsequent issue downloads and app updates. Great way to spend time when waiting at an airport, on the plane, bus, or just keeping up to date..Version: 2.6.1

Great experienceIt is a great experience reading this way, and affordable! Articles are articulate and the graphics crisp and well thought out. The app is very sensitive so you may find jumping pages due to a minor tap annoying..Version: 3.1

Enjoyable experienceReally enjoying this mag and find it well worth subscribing to. Great variety in articles though I wish some were more In depth. Getting used to the scrolling methods! One of my most favourite iPad subscriptions/apps..Version: 3.1

ReviewEach read is a great education. PJ🍷.Version: 7.7.5

Love it!Best mag out there. Honest!.Version: 3.2

Great MagReally good mag uses the features of iPad well..Version: 3.2

Great improvements!Just the type of improvements I was hoping for. Makes reading a much more relaxing experience. Previously it was too easy to inadvertently change screens - totally fixed now..Version: 2.0

Brilliant!A fantastic example of how to do an e-magazine right..Version: 3.2

Great app. Just one problemI love this app for reading this magazine. I'll never go back to print. Really like how the pages and articles are laid out and the first batch of pages include instructions on how to navigate the mag. My one major problem is I don't see a way to delete past read issues. The only way I can see doing it is to delete the app then reinstall it. So 4stars this time. If they fixed the issue management problem I'd give it 5..Version: 0

Great photos, but nothing (even ads) is linkedI really enjoyed reading this issue of Popular Science and all the large photography used in the iPad edition. My biggest problem with it is that things aren's linked. There are places where you see a "coming up" list of articles but tapping them doesn't jump to that article. Ads also have addresses to websites that I can't tap to view in my browser. It's strange to be using such a modern device as the iPad without something as basic as links. It's also annoying that I can't select text to be able to copy things and search for more information in my browser. I wonder if this entire magazine issue isn't just giant images to make stuff like that impossible. I hope not. It's 2010 and this isn't print! I would consider the lack of hyperlinking a big enough issue to give the magazine 3 stars, but I enjoyed it so much as a first-pass at an iPad edition that I gave it 4..Version: 0

Significantly Improved in version 1.30Version 1.30 indeed fixes all the bugs - and there were MANY - in version 1.20. I was able to restore all my purchased issues and everything seems to be working just fine. The only issue I have with this app is the incredibly slow download speed of the issues. I have an approximately 20Mbps download speed on my connection and it takes well over an hour for a 130MB issue to download. ~600MB iTunes TV shows take ~10 minutes so I'm guessing the purchased issues aren't coming from Apple's servers. Anyhoo, thanks for the update, thanks for the support during the issues we all had and I'm glad to see the app working again..Version: 0

This is my favourite app on the iPadI've purchased all the editions of PopSci+ on my iPad, and I truly love the magazine as it currently stands in digital form. I've not had any issues downloading content, whatsoever. The swiping gestures to reveal content / hide content work well and the use of transparent layers of content individually moving on their own works well. A search / highlighting / bookmark feature would be a nice addition, especially if at some point that is integrated into the search across all applications on the platform. Great work - love the content - images are crystal sharp. Can't wait for the next issue....Version: 0

Great appInteractive, excellent bookmark, quick contents, graphical page length representation, cool multi-media. I could not ask for more. Keep it clean and simple..Version: 3.0

Highly ratedVery likely I'll not buy another paper copy, so well done on the,iPad.Version: 3.1

Popular scienceVery good app, once you get used to the method of moving around the book. The graphics and the information is top notch..Version: 3.2

Better than hard copyMuch better than the hard copy. I wish more magazines were this way..Version: 3.2

Great magazine! Well presented!Well worth the asking price if you aren't a magazine subscriber yet. Interesting articles with good depth and the interface I find quite nice actually (takes some getting used to though)..Version: 3.0

Almost rightThanks for the sale price. I was a long term print subscriber until I located overseas. E-price is reasonable and getting electronic copy is much easier and faster than the international mail. Why can I not have more than one issue in the newsstand? I am not done with January but would like to peek at February, yet to do so I have to download it, only to lose January, which I then have to download again. Content is as good as ever, presentation great, navigation interesting. Good product. Update: it appears I can now get to other issues easily, although I still can only have one issue "on the shelf". The rest are in the library. I enjoy most of the interactive content, but some is silly..Version: 3.2

Really good, other mags could learn something!I live in the uk and have always loved PS. It's an expensive import over here and not easy to find. I have subscribed since the pad version came out. I love the implementation it's fun and easy to use. After all, with a word like science in the title I expect more than a scan of the print version. Thanks keep up the good work.Version: 3.2

A bit 'buggy'.. But I love it stillNicely presented. I would hope for more video content / animation. Great that I don't need to use up trees to read it... My iPad is charged from a solar cell, so it's a pretty green way to read magazines..Version: 3.2
