Go Books for Positive User Reviews

Awesome way to learn goThe interactive diagrams make this way better and than using paper books and a physical go board. The ebooks in this app are also much cheaper than their paper counterparts - on the order of a third of the Amz prices. There's also a MacOS app that you can share your purchases to, although it doesn't sync your position (yet?)..Version: 4.5

MultiworldFor those of us who love the game of Go this is a great app..Version: 1.1.1

BooksWhen r more books coming out.Version: 1.0.1

Great ResourceSuper convenient way to study Go. It has a great selection of books and provides an easy way to do Go problems. Love it! Thank you, developers, for putting this together!.Version: 4.0.2

Finally - easy to find the right Go bookI am beginner Go player (even though I have played for years off and on). Recently I tried to find some good introductory books (ideally in electronic format). I failed. It seems the few available where printed versions and it was really hard to choose which one I wanted to invest my time in. Along comes this app. It makes choosing the right book a lot easier with careful reviews and introductions, and it makes the material easy to electronically. (I still love paper books, but do find i do most of my reading on my iPhone/iPad these days). Great companion to the Smart Go Board app..Version: 3.2

Best way to read books on goIf you play go then this app alone is a reason to buy an iPad. Having interactive diagrams when reading a book on go makes for easier learning and understanding..Version: 4.6.3

Great way to access many hard to find booksThis app is great, and the new interactive problems feature is great. My only issue is that books are added veerry infrequently I have yet to find a book that I want to read and buy.Version: 1.6

Go books to a new levelGo books from smartgo brings Go books to a new level. I bought many books I already had in paper format but to be able to read them in such an interactive way makes it worth it to pay for them all over again. Reading invincible play by play is much more enjoyable, playing through an interactive problem book is also much more enjoyable. I can only hope for more books to be published..Version: 2.7

Indispensable for any Go playerSmartgo books are the answer to prayer! If you are a commuting office worker and want to study Go this is App is essential. The range of books available is growing all the time and caters for all levels. It is a joy and liberating to be able to study tsumegos and master games on a virtual Go board while on the move. This App is a wonderful gift to all Go players anywhere and everywhere! Highly recommended!.Version: 2.1

Diagrams Make eBooks Better Than Paper VersionsThe ebook format used in this app was designed with go books in mind. The diagrams, which are key elements of go books, have powerful features. When reviewing a game rather than just studying the numbered stones you have the option of actually stepping through the moves and watching the board evolve. Also, you can play problems out in the app. I had a small library of paper books which I've been replacing with Go Book versions because they're so much better than paper..Version: 4.4.3

Revolutionary!Smartgo books lets me read go books on my ipod touch. the interface is very clear with proper page breaking in between diagrams. the diagrams are a joy to use. you just click through the sequence of moves interactively if you want to, or see it as the usual numbered sequence as well. i think this is a far more powerful way to read go books than traditional paper books, and when you buy a book through smart go it is significantly *cheaper*. each book that is available has the full table of contents and usually the first couple of chapters for freevas well! If you are a kyu level player do yourself a favor and but janice kim's 'learn to play go' series..Version: 1.4

Great learning tool! This program is really excellent in establishing a strong collection of great books about Go for all levels. The fact that I also practice and play on my iPad makes this program very functional for me..Version: 3.2

A Must have Go app!If you like Go and read ebooks there's something here for you. The list of books are growing and there is a book for both beginners and advanced players. You also get a sample chapter of each book. Give it a look!.Version: 1.3

New book???Is it possible for you guys at smartgo to add "the chinese opening" by Kato Masao? If you could this app would be my favorite forever!!.Version: 2.1.3

Slight bugGreat update, though miss-tapping the next button on diagrams often leads to the page turning. It can be a bit annoying.Version: 1.1

The best go appHighly recommended..Version: 3.2

Table of contentsApplication is very helpful and innovative in that I can actually be interactive with the diagram. However, I would like to be able to pull up table of contents at any page of a current reading. It seems it is very difficult to go back to pages that had been read. I would like to have either bookmarks or access to table of contents..Version: 2.7

Smart go booksSmart go books would be perfect were it not for the fact that if anything goes wrong, you have to figure it out on your own. I was looking at the sample pages of Tesuji by Davies, and got stuck in it for day's, which means I couldn't look at any of the books I had already purchased. Apparently I had to touch screen the top left in RAPID SUCCESSION in order to get out of that mess. I am not so sure though, and I don't want to go through that horror again to find out..Version: 2.1

Lots of potentialThis is a great app with a decent selection of Go books to purchase and study. The interface of the app is great, but what it could really use is more books. I'd personally like to see more from the Mastering the Basics series, as well as the inclusion of the Elementary Go Series, and some of the classics like Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go by Toshiro Kageyama..Version: 1.4

Better than paperNow that the app supports bookmarks and annotations, this is a better medium than paper. You can view the examples step by step, or experiment with your own variations. The author (of the app) is responsive to queries and suggestions. Bravo!.Version: 3.0.1

Avid go readerLove it. I probably read more than I play. More book choices please..Version: 1.0.1

The way Go books were to be readWith a selection of books larger than most could source locally, this app allows you to purchase and read select titles from publishers such as Yutopian and Kisedo. The prices are discounted from the print versions and the digital integration means all diagrams are interactive and can be copied into a digital kifu as well. The selection of books is excellent for a beginner as all the classics are here like Janice Kim's Learn to Play Go series and the Elementary Go series, however, there are some books here for more advanced players as well..Version: 2.5

A few issuesNeeded to uninstall the app, reinstall and restore purchases to get this version running on my iPad 1..Version: 4.1

Very niceHaving diagrams that play themselves out in a book is priceless. The only problem is that they don't have all Go books in this app yet!.Version: 1.1

Strongly recommend.I’m currently a 5k and member of AYD. I’ve been playing for about 3.5 years. I have found this app invaluable in making Go book more accessible. Being able to play through the diagrams/examples is a very effective way to learn. One suggest, I wish they would make the app compatible with the apple keyboards. Being able to click through the diagrams would be much better than touching the screen all the time or having to reposition the mouse. Thanks for a great app..Version: 4.6.3

Interactive go books are wonderfulThis is a fantastic app. Now has over 100 books covering the range from complete beginner to high dan players. Books from all the major publishers. Also out-of-print books and exclusively digital books. Prices are typically half printed books. Not just pdf scans of printed books like go books on iBooks, Amazon, and the Nihon Kiin's ebook app, but interactive diagrams in which you can play out the moves. New features are constantly being added by this active developer. With a free sample chapter of every book, this free app is something every go player should Get..Version: 4.4.1

Pleased as punchThe feature where you can play the examples rather than have to mentally visualize them alone is worth several time the price of admission..Version: 4.4

Perfect for anyone interestedTo give context to this review, I am an 11k player who already owns SmartGo's Pro app. That app brought me from 18k to where I am now, and I got this app with hopes of breaking the single digit barrier. I'm happy to say that my expectations are more than surpassed. The app contains 8 books currently, each containing free chapter samples that by themselves justify this download. These 8 books cover every skill level, from the most basic of introductions to high level strategy analysis. There's commented game collections of double digit kyus and the best matches of Go Seigen. You can choose to purchase the books in-app at any time, with prices ranging from 4 to 9 dollars. Quite frankly, there's no reason not to get this FREE app..Version: 1.0.1

My favorite learning app, periodI love it for learning Go, but more than that, it makes iPhone/iPad learning exactly how it should be. Wherever I am, I buy a book, read some ideas, apply them in the interactive game diagram, and keep going. Awesome. Also, the book selection has gotten better and better over time, and is now fantastic. Most of my favorites (missing only the Elementary Go series) are there. Plenty for anyone to learn from..Version: 3.1

Excellent study aid!I love the longevity of physical books, but for actually making use of them there is no way better than this program. The catalog of books continues to grow, and I love that for about the cost of a latte I can expand my mind a few additional bits.Version: 4.3

Spectacular interactive way to read go booksIt’s so helpful to be able to play through examples. 100 books each with free chapters you can try. Then buy and read them here or in your Mac..Version: 4.6.2

Great source for all things goA wonderfully extensive repository to find all the books you need in several languages. my only complaint is that the reader lacks a few tools (such as highlighting) that makes it less useful than it could be. but for the reduced price of the books available here, it’s a small enough quibble to make this a wholly worthwhile investment..Version: 4.6.3

Better than paperBeing able to play out a sequence of moves right on the page is incredible. I would never buy a paper version of a book available in this app..Version: 4.4.1

Great selection......for an amateur player like me. Two introductory books are available if you are new to the game, one for $5 and another for $9. But that is a very reasonable price for these works. It is great how the diagrams show all the moves by double-clicking. This is a great feature. And I can read one chapter for free is a bonus (a la Kindle). Super app, I hope more titles become available.....Version: 1.0.1

AmazingGreat value.Version: 2.2.2

FantasticAccess to many hard to find or out of print books. Ever expanding selection for all levels of players. Fantastic feature set with very timely developer support..Version: 2.2.2

Not just electronic versions of Go books ...This review is re-submitted as it applies to version 1.6. This is an excellent app not just because of the healthy and growing range of books, but for the active way in which they are presented. By way of example, the 'Five hundred and one tesuji problems' book by Richard Bozulich allows the reader to enter his guess at the correct sequence of moves. Each correct move or deviation is indicated, so it is very much like the book becomes a Tsumego application all on its own. The most recent addition is the well respected "Invincible" collection of Shusaku games. The large paperback book was a collectors item, but suffered in the separation of the narrative the diagrams, requiring much page jumping. In addition, most board diagrams were heavily populated with moves. In the SmartGo Books version, there are fewer moves per diagram, and the narrative sits with the diagram. And the general paperback problem with many moves per diagram is neatly resolved in all books here with the provision of navigation tools, allowing moves to played back and worth with ease. The author is forging a new route for Go books with this app, and those who dismiss it as a 'free app but you must buy books' fail to see what is being achieved here. This is much more than Kindle for Go. Try it and see for free - there are sample pages for all the books. Highly recommended..Version: 1.6

Fantastic libraryIf you want to build your Go library (and don't want to spend $20+ per book) this is the right app for you! The previews are enough to give you a decent idea of whether you want the book, and sometimes are even enough to help improve your game, of only that little bit..Version: 2.1.2

Replacing my books with this appI recently bought a book through Go Books, a book I already owned. I really just needed to finish some reading while traveling and didn’t have my copy with me. I found the format used in Go Books is very handy. Being able to play out the problems right there on the page is wonderful. The free chapters are great for getting a taste of the books. A lot of work has gone into this and I hope to see that continue..Version: 4.6.3

Notes are a great additionThis is a useful collection of books, and they're priced very reasonably -- being able to add my own notes makes it even more useful! A great resource. ⚫️⚪️.Version: 3.0

For Go playersHas a very nice variety of books, useful for beginners to low kyus (maybe even dans, i didn't check all the books yet). Previews of each book are extensive, so you can really get a feel for how the author explains if ever you want to buy..Version: 2.1.2

This is a good way to study Go!Reading through books about Go are difficult. At least for me as a single digit kyu, it is difficult to follow diagrams. Either there are too many or ones with too many moves are difficult to read out. But the use of interactive diagrams makes this so much easier! Two comments. For the developers, allow us to bookmark and comment the books. For the authors, take the time to take advantage of the interactive diagrams. For example, the 501 Opening Problems book is great. It would be even better if the author showed a seq. to get to the problem in the setup diagram. Thanks to both the developers and the authors for taking advantage of a great platform to do more than you can in print' (now if KGS would just come up with an iPad app.).Version: 1.3

EssentialIf you play Go, this app is for you. The ability to 'check' that the answer to a life and death problem is in fact correct is invaluable. Superb with the iPad. A must..Version: 3.1

ExcellentSo much better than reading a go book on paper! I could not go back to paper after using this app..Version: 2.1.4

AmazingIt certainly crushes the chess book readers. I've bought a good number of the books in the app and never had a problem. Really wonderful implementation..Version: 4.1

PerfectionA perfect way to read go books!.Version: 1.0

Portable Go Library! This app is extremely convenient and has a great selection. It makes learning and studying Go fun and easy. I'm very happy with the updates so far and look forward to more in the future. Most book prices are reasonable given the convenience..Version: 1.2.1

Excellent resource, but still underdevelopedThis is great; I've read about half a dozen books through it and it's a much easier resource to learn from than almost anything else - certainly miles ahead of paper books thanks to the interactive diagrams. The only downsides are 1) the still small collection of available titles, but they're coming out at a reasonable rate and 2) the lack of features other ebook readers sport, such as syncing, bookmarking, annotations, etc. etc..Version: 1.2.2

GreatExcellent app for go players of all levels. Great collection of go books and I love how you can play the moves on the diagrams within the books. Only 2 minor things that bug me about the app which I hope they can fix in a future update - I am prompted to enter my apple store password every single time I use the app to read a go book, and 2) I can't find a way to bookmark my page in the book!.Version: 2.6.2

Essential resource! The serious Go player can hardly avoid the teachings available through this app if they expect to advance. All the latest and greatest insights can be found here. The ability to play through positions while reading about them is so important for full understanding..Version: 4.6.3

Just about perfect for meI realize that I'm not at a skill level to really push this Go engine too hard but I've played for several years and find this app to be at an excellent level for me. Unless I get a significant handicap, it can spank me. I'm looking forward to getting stronger; to fight back. The refresher problems help with making many tactical problems, that you end up seeing all the time in matches, more obvious. Also, the historical matches, which are somewhat commented on, are much easier to follow and watch unfold than in the Go books I have. Again, some folks probably can look at a page of numbered stones and see how it all came to end game, but for me, being able to move ahead move by move is a valuable tool. Finally, watching my 10yr old son and another adult friend of mine learn Go on this app makes me see the advantage it gives as a beginner teaching tool..Version: 1.2.2

Outstanding resourceLove the books and the format is stellar. The Janice Kim books in particular seem to have gotten a lot of love and attention where the questions are on a diff page than the answers. The goban is also excellent. It's so nice to be able to step through the go reviews and problems as I read..Version: 1.4.1

Great way to learn goI have all these books in paper, but the ability to read them on the go with the interactive boards INLINE with the text is a no-brainer awesome win. Thanks, Anders! A+++ Love, Chris K.Version: 1.3.1

YES!!So, this app is amazing. Buy the books or not, you can learn plenty even from just the samples~ Zedekblue -- 10k.Version: 1.1

BrilliantI have a few paper Go books, and never thought that I would actually prefer electronic books to paper ones, in spite of the convenience of weight and instant download. But For Go books it is a huge advance! The books aren’t simple transcriptions of the original, they have been painstakingly made interactive. If books of Go problems, for example, you click on the board diagrams where you think the stones should go, it plays the subsequent move(s) and when done it tells you whether you got it right with a tick above the board diagram. You then turn the page for the explanation. Similarly, for books describing games, the boards replay a group of moves, which is much better than trying to imagine it where the last few moves are already present but with numbers on them. Lastly, the range of books available for purchase is extensive, growing all the time, of great quality, and actually pretty cheap. Deep thanks to the author for making these available. If only we could get such great book coverage in English of Shogi!.Version: 3.0.1

A lot of thought went into itThe app is impressively well designed. It has every feature I can want for reading Go books. I love the interactive Go diagrams and the selection is very good. I’m impressed they managed to get so many titles in. The prices for the books are reasonable too, for the great quality and amount of work they’ve put in. This is a dream app and is obviously made by a Go player..Version: 4.6.3

This App Will Change How We Read Go BooksThink of it as Kindle for your go books, only MUCH better. SmartGo Books brings true mobility to reading go books. It's easy enough to slip a go book into my purse, but when I hit the first diagram with more than a handful of numbered stones I wish I was sitting next to a real board with a set of stones so I can play out the diagram. My 7k brain just isn't capable of reading complicated diagrams without a real board. With SmartGo Books, however, I can see the stones appear on each diagram one stone at a time, so I don't need to be sitting next to a go board to fully appreciate the book. SmartGo Books on the iPad offers a sense of context by showing multiple diagrams with accompanying text. SmartGo Books for iPhone, while more compact, makes it possible to continue reading when it isn't convenient to carry the iPad. After using SmartGo Books I would never consider purchasing a digital copy of a go book in any other format if it were available as a SmartGo Book. I'm really hoping to see some of my favorite classic titles available soon. I'd be happy to repurchase the best of them so I could read them with SmartGo Books. This app is attractive, free, and easy to use. Every go player should have it. Download this app and read the samples to see for yourself how great it really is..Version: 1.0

Missing the most important titleGreat app! But the greatest classic book I want to read is not there "Lessons in the fundamentals of Go" by Toshiro Kageyama. I'm sure I'm not alone in this, please add this classic it really helps all levels in the most important thing - fundamentals!.Version: 2.2.2

A great learning toolThis app is like having an entire library of the world's best go books, but better. Interactive diagrams are so much easier to follow and understand than printed ones. I only have a few minor gripes. One is that the description for a diagram may continue on to the next page, especially in the iPhone version, but the diagram itself is locked in a fixed location. This requires a lot of flipping back and forth to fully understand the diagram. This is made worse because the diagrams reset as soon as you flip a page, so stepping through a long diagram with a description that spans multiple pages is difficult. The app also supports playable problems, but I have noticed in some books that not everything that could be a playable problem is. Some are simple diagrams that you have to play out yourself. In many cases, the text specifies white to play, but the diagrams still start with black's move first. Despite these minor inconveniences, this app has been tremendously helpful for improving my knowledge and playing..Version: 3.0.1

A great portal and experience to learn Go Game.Learning Go Game (Weiqi 围棋, in Chinese) needs good books. It can be old fashioned paper ones, along with a board and two buckets of chess, typically a well-lit area, and tons of space. Or this can be anywhere, as long as you have access to your screen. This app not only lets you access a tons of books (many with free chapter or two), but also bring the learning into 21st century. No longer you will have to have the physical board and go pieces, you can interact the puzzles and games right in the game. The app is also very considerate to put the puzzle/quiz and its answer separated by pages. Very nice detail. Just got the app and definitely looking forward to go back and get new books within this app! One thing for family sharing, the in-app purchases are not automatically shared within family devices. But if you click the “gear” button at the top left, and register the original purchase with an email address that family have access to. New devices can be registered with the same email address. After confirming the new device from the link sent to the email address. A simple restore previous purchases (from the same gear button) would show all the books you’ve purchased. Now all family members are on the book..Version: 4.6.3

Excellent value booksGo books are expensive + difficult to obtain in the uk. This app has some good introductory + intermediate books at 1/3 shop prices. (at my level I cannot comment on advanced books.) the library is growing, but has scope for many more books. The idea of an interactive app is excellent, but the examples I have don't show this to good advantage. The potential for showing a 10 - 12 move joseki or problem solution step by step, rather than the confusing diagrams shown in some books is huge. However, I haven't seen a good example so far. Altogether, excellent, but can we have more books please, and more utilisation of the clever functionality..Version: 1.3

The best way to read Go booksLove this app. I'm no longer limited to the books the bookstore keeps in stock. And the interactive diagrams are a lot of fun!.Version: 3.0

Best way to buy and read go booksIf you want to study go, this app should be a no-brainer. You can play through the diagrams right in the books, which is really handy. The books cost money but you can read sizeable samples before buying any of them. It's really amazing and I hope it gets even more books over time (and it has been doing that regularly)..Version: 2.6.2

The graded problems. You can actually play the graded problems from the books in this app! That is a great feature..Version: 4.4.3
