What is PocketPacket? Description of PocketPacket 1623 chars
PocketPacket started as an APRS client for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad devices, but is also available for the Mac desktop or laptop. The "Automatic Position Reporting System" is a packet communication protocol used by amateur radio operators (hams) around the world, to report position, status, station capabilities, weather or other information in real time. Packets can also be used for broadcasting announcements or one-to-one messaging.
PocketPacket incorporates a software-based TNC, allowing you to directly capture and visualize, or encode and transmit 1200 baud packets (AFSK modulation) using a VHF radio transceiver. With PocketPacket you can also get and send packets over the Internet, by selecting one of the available Tier 2 servers of the global APRS-IS network.
Incoming data is presented on a map, as most packets define some object, with a specific symbol and location. By selecting a symbol, you can view the latest information sent for the corresponding object, as well as the raw packets that produced it. All available objects are also shown in a list, which allows you to search for the ones you are looking for. Messages and bulletins are shown in a separate set of screens, structured like an e-mail client.
With PocketPacket you can follow the status of the APRS network or submit your station's info. Monitor moving objects, get real time weather reports directly from local stations and more. Especially with the iOS version and an iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, you can have a full-fledged picture of packet activity in a small, portable package - ideal for field work or the ham shack.

✓ Getting better - works with SignalLink nowGetting better, The SignalLink USB problem has been worked out. Program can now tx & rx, so it does what it is supposed to do. Mapping APRS stations seems to be a bit slow, but signals are showing up where they are supposed to be. AB2RC.Version: 1.4.2
✓ New Technician w/ Ft-60 and SignaLink - Running in 3 minutesI was reluctant to download based on other reviews. It is rough, but it worked for me within 5 minutes of installation. Running a Mac Book Pro 15” (Mid- 2015) with SignaLink connected to an Yaesu Ft-60R (yes, a hand held dual band radio). It appears to work and I can find no other options. Until someone builds something better… this may be your least expensive and possibly only option. Pay the $5 and accept life as a Mac Ham..Version: 1.4.2

✗ Audio Modem is finickyThe APRS-IS connection works great, but the audio modem is finicky. I'm using a MicroHam USB Interface III and apparently even with the RX level turned to maximum, it's still not enough. The author says that this will improve with the next version. (Update: I've dropped a star because it's been a year and there has been no new version. A shame.) Tip for APRS-IS: Use the "callpass" tool to generate a passcode for your callsign. It comes with xastir, which can be installed from MacPorts..Version: 1.4.2
✗ Poor network underpinningsBought this app to try it out, but I couldn't get it to do -- ANYTHING --. Beware, this app doesn't work with proxy servers. Even if you configure your mac to use Proxy servers for everything, including browsing, IM, mail, etc -- this app does NOT honor it, and there's nowhere to set it. I'm going to try to figure out how to get a refund since now it's useless to me. -jre.Version: 1.4.2
