Retro Gamer Official Magazine for Positive User Reviews

Great Mag. Not so great readerI really like this magazine. The writing is very good, as is the articles and some of the people they manage to talk to are true legends of the games industry. The only downside is that the actual reader program is a bit flaky sometimes, but don't let that put you off as it is an excellent magazine to read. Also the yearly subscription option seems to have vanished, which saved you the price of a couple of issues each year..Version: 2.2

Great Digital AppI've been reading Retro Gamer for a few years now, buying the hard copies but having moved and with space being a premium I've moved over to the yearly digital subscription and love it. You get the exact same layout and content... Think of it as a pdf really. Convenient and simple!.Version: 4.7.0

Look forward to the new issue every monthGreat reviews, interviews and features on all those great games and systems of yesteryear. Very high quality writing and you can tell this stuff is a labor of love for the whole staff..Version: 2.5.8

Retina support for iPad finally working ... but magazines need higher resolutionI'm thrilled to finally have a working iPad retina update for this app. The problem is that the magazines themselves appear to be lower resolution compared to other magazine apps. You can easily see this by zooming in. Text and images are not sharp when zoomed. Hopefully this will be addressed in future issues..Version: 2.5.1

Great but could be betterLove the content. Pages are very clear and easy to read. Only complaint is offline viewing & library are annoyingly slow. Would like to see significantly better performance here..Version: 5.6.3

Great magazineIgnore the negative review commenting that this app asks for money. It's quite apparent that person has no idea what a magazine subscription app is. Retro Gamer is an essential read for any lover of gaming, and particularly those who reminisce about past game consoles and computers. Written by gamers for gamers, it is an educational read, and often leads to seeking out old games to play on after reading an article about it. The only magazine I read from cover to cover - even if the subject was not one I was particularly bothered about, the writing makes the article worthwhile. At under £20 for 6 months, this is a bargain..Version: 2.5.8

Retro ReflectionGreat magazine to relive the retro years of gaming!.Version: 5.1

BusterIf you are lazy or want to save a few quid then this is for you. No trudging to the shops and no lengthy subscription. It's a couple of quid cheaper than a 1 off mag purchase and is "delivered" so saves time and effort but it doesn't quite replace actually owning the mag. It would have received 5 stars had it managed to perfectly replicate the feeling you get with the real thing when having a long stay in the smallest room in the house. Its kind of like using the IPad touchscreen to type, it's good, it does the job etc but it's not as good as a full keyboard You won't be disappointed but you won't feel like singing for joy.Version: 2.2

ApVery good magazine always read it..Version: 4.7.0

Written by the right peopleThose who are involved in this publication really know their craft and also have a genuine passion for retro games..Version: 4.7.0

FantasticEasy to use and gorgeous images, especially on my iPad Pro..Version: 5.6.3

Best retro gaming magazine, decent viewerThis update to the app fixes two annoyances from the past: 1. The store loads much faster. 2. It remembers your place in the magazine. Finally. Also improved is the legibility. The previous version looked like scans of the pages. The current version seems to be PDFs from the original digital content. The text is very sharp and you can zoom into screenshots with much better detail. The app itself is cluttered and presentation unimpressive. But you can easily view and read the magazines so I can ignore the wrapper. I highly recommend a subscription, it's the best retro gaming content..Version: 5.1

Retina now working perfectlyThanks for sorting the retina display issue (the new iPad/ iPad hd/iPad 3) it looks perfect......... And any chance of an iBook page turn feature?????? Not needed but giving that mag feel.Version: 2.5.1

Was Perfect, now expensive. This is a great app for an amazing mag. I use it on my iPhone 5 and can read and flick through with ease. Zooming is good and clear, the magazines are cheaper than their hard copy variants, and they are organised well, so you can easily see the standard issues and the specials. Also, the subscription for the digital editions is just £2.99! Bargain all round. Brilliant mag for nostalgia and learning about how all those classic games were made, with great interviews and history pieces. Highly recommended!! EDIT: do NOT get this, get google Play Newstand, then just buy them through Safari where they will transfer to your app - the mags are £1 cheaper! £4.99 from this app vs. £3.99 from google! Crazy. 💰💰.Version: 4.7.0

Love itThis publication just gets better and better Love the content and ideas As a digital subscriber could you add video to the elements ? Keep up the great work.Version: 5.2.3

Overall very goodLike others have said, this app dies the job, and the magazine content itself is great..Version: 6.0.16

Retro spare roomIf you're into retro video gaming then retro gamer is for you! A fantastic magazine, it works well as an app too!.Version: 4.7.0

Best games do not necessarily have the best graphicsBrilliant look back at an era of gaming which defined my generation. Still the best in a lot of ways. Graphics and “power” were always beaten my gameplay..Version: 5.1

Great magazineBrilliant trip down memory lane, have purchased a few computers since reading this magazine (nostalgia) reasons of course 😀.Version: 4.7.0

Great mag, decent viewerViewer works well enough. Can be a bit tough to turn pages. Magazine is fantastic, looks great on ipad even if i'd still prefer it in print. Readable on iphone but loses some of the charm of the beautiful page layouts from print edition due to being shrunk so small and having to zoom in to read the actual text. Also got 169 issues for $47, which is a phenomenal deal..Version: 5.1

Great Magazine, Awful iPad/iPhone AppJust another PDF dump. I read the physical magazine instead, and it's absolutely wonderful. It shows great insight into the history of games..Version: 4.7.0

Love this magLiving in the US, would have to rely on Barnes and Noble for a ten dollar copy and sometimes miss issues. Now can never miss an issue! The interface is wonderful as well..Version: 4.7.0

Good magThis is a great mag I get it for my boyfriend he loves it.Version: 2.5.8

Latest Edit : July 30, 2012. Update works fine! Phew! The current update ( ver. 2.5.5 ) has corrected the crash bug, thank goodness! When I downloaded the previous version, I thought it might be the so-called 'App-Store glitch / bug' that was the cause. . . . Luckily, because I own multiple iDevices ( 6 iPad's & 4 iPod Touches - all with different iOS versions installed ) my collection(s) of downloaded issues of 'Retro Gamer' were unaffected - I always update to iDevices which have 'Retro Gamer' App, but contain NO downloaded issues, just in case. . . . I notice that the 30th Anniversary Commodore 64/ ZX Spectrum Double-Sided Special Issue is STILL NOT available from within the 'Retro Gamer' App. I simply cannot understand why not. If, for some reason it is not possible to include it within 'RG', then perhaps it could be placed on either PixelMags' Dev. Page on iTunes, or the Imagine Publishing Developers Page - not JUST on the Imagine Shop where ( unfortunately ), I am unable to purchase it - due to lack of credit cards etc. In this largely digital age of iPad's / iPhone's et al, I really DO think it should be on iTunes. Thanx 4 fix..Version: 2.5.5

App startup takes a long time (if online), does not fill full ipad pro screenPROS: This is the highest quality version of the mag, out of all the online options. Almost no noticeable compression and no formatting errors (vs Kindle, Zinio). Zinio does offer Text-to-Speech, which is great. FIXED: I can now read issues offline and it fills up the full iPad screen. It’s really fast if you are on airplane mode. I added two more stars! :-) CONS: Store take a long time to load. (updated November 2020).Version: 6.0.16

LolFIRST.Version: 2.2

Looks great on iPad 3Been buying this magazine in print since issue 1. I now buy it digitally on my iPad instead. Looks fantastic on retina screen. Will the remaining special issues 5 and 6 plus the c64 and spectrum edition be re-released on the eshop?.Version: 2.5.1

Takes up vast amounts more space, pages are blurryDespite suggesting otherwise, this update demands vastly more storage space for magazines than the previous version, with very little extra functionality or quality improvements. In fact, it now takes a few seconds to render the pages, meaning they appear blurred and require an unacceptable waiting time before you can read the material comfortably. Please fix this asap!.Version: 4.0

Love itLove the mag, love the app....add move retro video content into the articles plz.Version: 4.5.5

Excellent selection of back issues.Unlike many of the magazine apps that have come out for newsstand, this one has had a complete back catalogue of issues made available to it, right back to issue 1. I think this is fantastic, as I have been able to purchase several issues I missed years before I started reading this magazine. The previous review states this is a good app if your lazy, but I think it's a great app for people who are busy, as you can carry your entire magazine collection around with you wherever you go and catch up on your reading whenever you get time..Version: 2.2

FixedNow fully working with the new Retina iPad. Have 5 stars!! :).Version: 2.5.1

A great readI thoroughly enjoy this magazine every month. Deals with all kinds of old school video games. + you can go back and enjoy all the previous editions with no fear of them being out of date! Highly recommended for gamers..Version: 2.2

10 PRINT 'decent' 20 GOTO 10I usually buy the print version of this magazine for train journeys or if there is something featured that interests me. Being the 100th issue I thought I'd get a digital copy as I wouldn't keep a print version after I've read it once. The issue itself is great with interesting features and I'm still getting through it and for £2.99 I'm happy with it (printed is £4.99). My only gripe is that it isn't designed for iPad so the print can look a bit pixelated (I'm on iPad 3) but this fact is mentioned before you purchase so you take your choice there! Overall i would say that if you're a retro video games fan you won't be disappointed with the content & reading is just a matter of zooming and rotating to suit your preference..Version: 2.4.3

Needs New iPad supportFinally, retina iPad supported and it's beautiful! It now makes a great substitute to the physical version that's expensive to import. Digital distribution at its best!.Version: 2.5.1

Amazing. Previews of every issue & page are availableI can't believe how much content they have every issue on games of the past. Everything is well written by people who are obviously very passionate about games. For the fools that write poor reviews due to their own shortcomings, there is not only a preview of every single issue, but you can see thumbnails of literally every page of every issue. Just tap the issue's thumbnail and swipe..Version: 2.5.4

Nostalgia review.!As a 30 something I’m collecting my childhood consoles again, and to find this magazine that takes me back , yet also it’s great to see how the games were made and designed, found it late in life but love it.!👌.Version: 6.0.16

Retro gamerLove the mag. Takes me back to the days of the ZX spectrum and c64..Version: 4.7.0

App Still does no workStill broken. Do not waste your money. Older issues still not available. Very bad!!!!!!.Version: 4.5.5

Worth every penny.Great magazine. This app has seen much improvement since it's inception..Version: 4.7.0
