✓ When it works, it's greatThis is a wonderful dictionary, but its app has been plagued by clumsy upgrade instructions, buggy software, horrific quality control testing. Finally, everything works, and I'm happy. But Enfour should never have allowed things to get this bad. On the good side, customer service is helpful and fast. But a software company has to make good software and test it properly before release. That should be a given. To ask people to pay AND to be your QA department for free -- not on..Version: 3.9.2
✓ A great dictionary app for college studentsSure, there are a number of free dictionary apps out there, but they don't have the quality editorial work that can be found in the American Heritage dictionary. This dictionary gives far more information than any of the others I've used, offering things like first-known-use date and root language, along with deprecated and archaic meanings and connotations of words. As an English student, these features are invaluable. Add in the very nice navigation, search and bookmarking, along with the excellent appendices about language families and pronunciation, and you have an app that is truly excellent. Highly recommended for any college student studying English. Also a note to anyone complaining about the cost of upgrading to the new version: say I buy a copy of the fifth edition of this dictionary in a bookstore. A few years later, the sixth comes out, offering new words, new appendices, and a lot of new editorial work. I do not expect the publisher to offer me a free copy of the sixth edition since I already own the fifth. This is what you are expecting when you demand a free upgrade from the fourth edition app to the fifth edition app. That you seem to think you are entitled to this is just... silly..Version: 4.0
✓ Sad and FrustratingLike so many others, I downloaded this to my iPhone4 and followed the instructions for upgrading from the 4th Ed. But when I click on the 5th Ed. icon, it brings up a splash screen for a few seconds and then closes. It does not connect to a webpage. I love the 4th Ed and use it all the time. I am so disappointed. How can they make such a great product and mess this up so bad (or is it "badly"? Better check the usage panel)..Version: 3.9.1

✓ A very good dictionaryThis is an great dictionary. Excellent definitions. Literate. Semi-encyclopaedic. Nicely adapted from the print version – which I also have – for use on the iPad. It is only let down by the fact that updates are not incremental but require a full half-gig download every time the editors decide to add a few new words..Version: 4.1.1
✓ Problem Quickly SolvedNow that the latest update (3.9.2) has been released, the AH dictionary has been restored to full functionality. While I had issues with previous updates, I must say the support people always respond quickly to answer questions and to solve problems. There were some glitches with the first 2 releases and their in-app upgrade system, but it looks like this latest (3.9.2) has fixed. ✓ Do not try to upgrade multiple iOS devicesI successfully upgraded AHD4 to AHD5 on my iPad. I then installed the "FREE" universal AHD5 app on my iPhone and attempted to Restore, trusting it would be upgraded in that process. I tried many times, even deleting AHD5 from my iPhone and starting the whole process over, but was unable to activate AHD 5 on my iPhone. Either the upgrade process on multiple iOS devices has a deadly bug or the publisher is guilty of behavior bordering on fraud..Version: 3.9

✓ Great upgrade and super support from EnfourI upgraded to AHD5 from AHD4 and the new dictionary is noticeably better (especially with etymologies, illustrations and better handling of pronunciations)… I have used AHD4 from the first day in the app store and over the years you really learn just how amazing it is to have a decent dictionary permanently sitting in your pocket so upgrading was a must and I think the 50% discount pretty generous (you don't get a discount if you buy the physical book)… The upgrade process didn't work for me initially but Enfour provided great email support and always answered my queries promptly The secret to the upgrade is to force quite ADH4 after downloading ADH5 and before launching ADH5 for the first time - if you do this you should see the screen with the discount price… Anyway whether upgrading or buying for the first time this is a first rate dictionary, up to date, easy to use, detailed and comprehensive content and great user support!.Version: 3.9
✓ Take it from a dictionary pro/geek; this is worth it.As a linguist specializing in English lexicography, the American Heritage dictionary series has been one of my personal favorites for three decades now, mainly due to its inclusion of Proto-Indo-European roots. So it was really cool to discover I could put the whole Fifth Edition on my iOS devices and search them there. The installation went smoothly, and when I did have some problems Enfour Support was super quick to get back to me and explained exactly what I needed to do, without resorting to a cluttered, confusing and impersonal script as so many other tech companies do. ✓ AHD5 a great app - previous problems solved. By Bill McCreary (not Palmer Princess!)Like some of the others who had crash problems, I experienced the same thing when trying to install the new AHD5, version 3.9.2, a few days ago. I contacted Enfour customer support, and Tracey Northcott exchanged emails with me so I could successfully get the new version up and running on two iPhone 4 smart phones and one iPad. Enfour wants to offer previous registered users of AHD4 a discounted price for AHD5, and there are a few hoops to jump through to get it, but the effort is worth it, and the new app is working perfectly on our three devices. Now that iTunes has the latest version of the app available, customers shouldn't have the problems some of experienced in the recent past..Version: 3.9.2
✓ Version 3.9.7 works great!The new 3.9.7 update worked flawlessly. Yes, it is the whole dictionary to download, but all the new and updated definitions need to be be search indexed. I like that it stays up to date! I used the 2nd edition of AH in book form for years. Now this 5th edition is always at hand, fast, and the definitions and word histories are simply the most useful. The complete offline pronunciations are excellent, and work away from WiFi on my iTouch. You know you want the best American English dictionary on iTunes - and this is it! ✓ Best dictionary app and tech supportI had purchased many English dictionary apps over the years and so far none ever comes close to this app on content and usability. The tech support is also amazing. ✓ A lot can happen in ten yearsThe AHD4 was published in 2000, and the language has changed in the eleven years it took to produce a new edition. I love the "look and feel" of the new app and content. Before upgrading, I wrote to Enfour support about the thesaurus issue (it's included in AHD4 Deluxe but not in this upgrade), and found out that a) if you have both apps, touching a word brings up a menu which can take you to the AHD4 thesaurus and back, and b) a free upgrade is coming that will fold the two into one again. Scrolling to the bottom of the description of AHD5 it mentions this and also that there will be a way to transfer bookmarks from AHD4, for those who wrote about that not working. I used AHD4 all the time and expect I will continue to do so with AHD5, only with more up-to-date language usage, more example sentences, etc. The only thing is that the pronunciations still seem to have some static; nevertheless they seem faster and clearer than those in the AHD4..Version: 4.0
✓ Upgrade will not work and support has gone missingI use the Fourth edition all the time and love it. The upgrade to the Fifth edition is non-functional. I have been trying to upgrade for several days on an iPhone and iPad - neither has worked. I contacted their support, followed their suggestions and still nothing after a couple of email exchanges. They have not answered the last email I sent a few days ago. The support people are in Japan so there is a time difference, but where ever they are they seem to have gone into hiding..Version: 3.9
✓ Can be installed on multiple devices when purchased onceIt is not explained anywhere that I saw, but it is true that you can buy the dictionary on one device and install it at no extra charge on another. The trick is to go to the Buy function and tap "Restore". I did not receive any response to a query about this I had sent before discovering this. ✓ Fantastic dictionary but still some bugsThis is a great dictionary and the app is mostly excellent. I've had one bug that I can't seem to shake. The index feature got stuck on the "O" section. If I try to scroll to another letter the app closes. E-mail report has been responsive but no solution yet. Hoping the next update will resolve the issue for me. ✓ Do Not Upgrade To New EditionWhile using the cloud is all the rage, unreliable internet connections mean that things are not always available. I use dictionaries constantly and the American Heritage has been a favorite of mine. Now that they have chosen to make parts of the dictionary an online component with a vague promise that we might be able to download it in the future all I can say is no thank you. I will happily enjoy the previous edition and never upgrade from here. I pity the poor sods who have to deal with the vagaries of streaming connections just to use a dictionary. I recommend the Oxford Dictionary as being just as good (and better than the American Heritage on detailing word origins) and the whole dictionary is on the device - no internet connection required..Version: 5.0
✓ Problems with historyIn an update previous to 4.3, an error in history was introduced and 4.3 didn’t resolve . You can no longer delete history entries individually or in groups. This must use feature is seriously broken. I have been a happy user of AHD5 which I use many times daily. Revised review Hallelujah! ✓ The only major dictionary that gets iOSThis is the only dictionary I've found that meets these requirements: 1) A major dictionary 2) No internet required for audio and images 3) Understands iOS If you want a quick definition for the occasional word, and you don't consider yourself a word guy or gal, there are plenty of low cost online and offline apps. For those with 3G, I recommend wordreference's iphone app. If you mind the 500meg file size of this app, you won't the next time you want to hear that difficult new word pronounced and there's no internet connection (New Oxford fails here). To be fair though, this app lacks separation of data from app so that you don't have to download the full thing each update. More an more big data size apps are doing this, and I think this American Heritage should do the same. Instead of a copy-and-paste job with basic search, this is an app that you can be proud of. Icon, Splash Screen, and features show an attention to details that's worthy of your apple device. Others do a mediocre job..Version: 3.9.7
✓ Great tech support, outstanding appKudos to Enfour for quickly fixing this app after an update caused many users to experience crashed on open. I was one of those who complained here, and Enfour wrote me personally after the latest update fixed the problem, apologizing and asking if I had any other problems. Tis is the second time Enfour has contacted me. The first was after I alerted them to a slight formatting problem in the definition for the word "couple," which they promptly fixed in the next update. Bottom line, Enfour offers outstanding technical support, this is a great app, and the American Heritage Dictionary is Second to none. However, I reserve that fifth star for one complaint: I cannot install this app on both my iPhone and my iPad, a limitation I have found increasingly frustrating as I use -- and appreciate -- the digital version of the American Heritage Dictionary more and more..Version: 3.9.2

It also integrates nicely with the Roget's Thesaurus app. My biggest quibble is that it seems like there's an update about every week, and it's not exactly a quick download. ✓ Good dictionary, Critically Flawed appI bought AHD5 & LDOCE+(both apps are released by Enfour.) and have used them a couple of days. Both dictionaries are good for contents, of course, but there is an issue about Link function the apps are providing. Say that I search a word on AHD5 and touch the word to use the Link function and I touch LDOCE menu to jump LDOCE+ app. The LDOCE+ app is launched and the word I touched on AHD5 is displayed. Everything’s fine so far. But the problem occurs after I switch back to AHD5 using app switching function Apple provides which is located upper left corner of LDOCE+ app. After I get back to AHD5, I cannot search any word on AHD5. Say that I search a basic word like ‘gain’, No entries found. My iOS version on my iPhone is 15.4.1. I use only one link menu on both apps - On AHD5 app, I only use LDOCE Link Menu and on LDOCE+ app, I only use LDOCE Link Menu. What is the problem? This is very critical problem. ✓ Love this dictionaryI upgraded to this app (AHD5) after being a very satisfied AHD4 user. I also use the Oxford American English Dictionary (OAED), but find that AHD5 provides more thorough and more nuanced definitions than the OAED does. AHD5 also contains entries for many more words. This is reflected in the app's rather large size. Initially, there were bugs in AHD5's iOS 10 support, but those were fixed very quickly. Thank you for that..Version: 7.0.2
