American Heritage® Dictionary for Positive User Reviews

Clearly the best dictionary for iphoneHaving robust oral and written language skills allows one to wield more influence in a vast majority of interactions with others. Speaking and writing well is attractive and empowering. The path to achieving these skills begins with reading and a good dictionary. The American Heritage 4th ed. for iphone and ipad is simply the best dictionary available, bar none. I was impressed with the multitude of graphic images that reinforce many of the definitions, sometimes making it feel more like an encyclopedia. The app actually speaking the word quickly resolves any pronunciation arguments with friends who can't read phonetics. I also found the opening essays on the origins of language to be quite engaging. There are so many gems of reference knowledge throughout this app that it is exciting just to explore it and see what else you can find, there are some interesting things beyond word definitions here. I must also say the Enfour's support staff is top-notch. There were some very minor bugs in the initial versions and they have all been corrected in prompt fashion. This is a very responsive group of folks who do great work. To summarize, if you want to improve your language skills and fundamental knowledge, you would be hard-pressed to find a more thorough resource than this volume-in-an-app..Version: 3.6.1

Excellent:update makes even betterThis is an excellent application. The content is immense and high quality (includes Canadian/British spelling for those concerned), the interface is very easy to use and fast and I've had no stability issues. The price is high compared to other apps but its worth it if you want an easily accesible, high quality dictionary The update seamlessly integrated this with rogets, has more intradictionary word links and loads faster. Stellar app.Version: 0

I am very grateful this is still supported.Bought this app a decade ago. Still works. Perhaps a better interface and faster then newer dictionary apps. Very impressed..Version: 12.1.1

ExcellentUpdated review: I decided I had to update my old review (below) because the newer edition of this app fixed all my old complaints. This app is fast, and has tap-through (so you can tap on a word in a definition to take you to that word's definition). If you like dictionaries, this incredible. And you can "bookmark" words: I use this feature to save words I like but predict I will forget. I can quiz myself on them later by brining up the list of bookmarked words and trying to recall their definitions. This app looks nice, is easy to use, has great content--hands down, it beats having a print edition. ---- The content is good, obviously, and its got audio. Not sure who needs audio, but it's a neat feature I guess. That said, there are flaws: * Every dang time you open the app, you see a splash screen. It stays up for too long. It should be gotten rid of. You should just be able to go straight to a word lookup. * Overall the dictionary is a bit slow. It's not crazy slow. But word lookups should be zippier. * You can't click on any word to take you to its definition, which would be a very nice feature if it could be implemented w/out sacrificing load time So overall this is a good dictionary but I was hoping for a bit more. Hopefully they'll update it fixing at least the speed and splash screen issues..Version: 0

AHDVery useful.Version: 13.3

My most-used AppAlthough pricy, this is the best app I've ever bought for my iPhone. I've had it since November 2008 and I use it almost every day - sometimes many times a day. It's a must for any literate, thinking, curious person who wants to quickly & conveniently look up new words or alternate meanings of well-known words, tease out shades of meaning between related words, or just get quick facts on myriad topics. I appreciate the new features that have been added progressively to the app, particularly the ability to touch a word in a definition to drill down to its definition, and also the setting to "open to search." As an iPhone 3G user, I was frustrated that the app was suddenly not backward compatible to IOS 3.1.3, the last IOS version available on the iPhone 3G without incurring the performance hit of IOS 4.x. I emailed the developers about this, and they've just released this version 3.6 which restores IOS 3.1.3 compatibility. Great app, and great user support. Thanks..Version: 3.6

Installation problem with 3.5 is now fixedIt's working again. Thanks..Version: 3.5.1

Excellent dictionary, but more work needs to be done on the application engineThe AHD is an excellent, comprehensive dictionary; the AHD iPhone application is good, but not great. There is still work that needs to be done with the iPhone application itself to make this truly great. I've been using the AHD app regularly since its release and the main problems I've experienced are: 1. Poor performance during searches. 2. Crashes with some complex wildcard searches. 3. No technical support for application issues. 4. (not a problem, but a missing UI feature) No horizontal UI functionailty..Version: 0

Good DictionaryExcellent dictionary... Very comprehensive... I didn't realize it was 300+MB but that's fine Pity it's so expensive.Version: 0

Excellent—Highly recommended! This review has been updated for version 2.0 ----------------- This is an excellent dictionary—yes, it's large and yes, it's expensive. If your needs don't require a top-notch reference with full detail of etymology and audio clips for pronunciation then get a tome more suited to your situation. I had previously given this app a 3-star review; this update adds a lot and makes the product much better, but the implementation suffers. First I'd like to say that the app does load faster—noticeably faster, the new index listings are welcome, and the link to Roget's is a great feature. Nicely done. In the following, portions from my v1.0 review are set in double hyphens ("--"). --1) It doesn't use the IPA for pronunciation; if it did this would be a four-star app. I hope that this is fixed soon-- Well this has been fixed—but it's a bittersweet change. Alas, IPA is only displayed in a pop-up window when the user taps on the displayed pronunciation (which is in AHD's format). Wouldn't it be better to allow the user to select the displayed pronunciation as a preference setting? (In addition, the pop-up window is titled "AHD4.html"—oops, the programmers forgot to actually name it!) Finally, there's no pronunciation key for IPA. --2) No support for tapping a word to go directly to its definition. Enfour could learn from Ultralingua in this respect-- Another bittersweet change. The good: one can now tap any word in a current definition to be taken to that (new) word's definition. The bad: want to tap on a word in the etymology box? Cant be done (OK, this is a minor point, but why not?). Looking for *good* visual feedback like in the Ultralingua apps? Nope—just a cold, grey box that briefly pops up (ditto for tapping on a headword to go to the thesaurus). I'd like to be able to tap any word on the screen and be presented with an appealing menu offering choices like "Definition", "Thesaurus" (or "Synonym"), & "Bookmark". (To exemplify the problem of not being able to tap a word in the etymology box consider the etymology given for PIANO: "Italian, short for pianoforte; see PIANOFORTE." Yet I can't easily get to "pianoforte" because it won't allow me to select it.) --3) The appendices don't have any way to bookmark one's progress or position. There is a lot of reading here, for many people it's too much for one sitting (especially since it doesn't support landscape mode and therefore the text is small). A good way to leave and return to the same place would be welcome-- Unchanged. --4) The quality of the audio clips is quite low. I appreciate that it's a delicate balance of quality v. size, but they could be better-- Unchanged..Version: 0

Nice application...Okay... I purchased this program after reading many reviews on various dictionaries; I was especially sold on the idea of sound. I almost bought the Oxford dictionary but after reading all the negative reviews, I am glad I didn't. Turns out this dictionary is much more then I thought I purchased, I have been reading through out the day and looking up words just to see how this app would hold up. All I can say is, WOW! This thing is great! I can really appreciate the work put into this program. Granted, it is a little early for this review, but after putting it through it paces today, I feel very comfortalbe with my decision to purchase this program. I feel I got my monies worth and more. Thanks Enfour, inc. you have done an awesome job on this program. Hands down a 5-star program! God Bless Raul S.Version: 0

Really nice addition to life of avid nonfiction readerI read a lot of nonfiction. I often mark words that I want to circle back to to look up because I don't want to fire up my notebook every time I want to look up a word. This app has gotten me looking up words on the fly a lot more often. Though I didn't know that I would use the features so often, it turns out that the history and capability to bookmark words has me learning concepts much faster. Every time I hit upon a word I previously looked up whose definition has become a bit fuzzy, I pop open my bookmark, and I get another repetition of the concept instantly. Same goes for when I'm later reflecting on ideas and concepts I've read about. I pop open American Heritage wherever I am and I've got the bookmarks to jog my memory and even to cue some concepts that would have already begun to fade and escape me if I don't have the book in question in front of me. Very useful for many other purposes, but this was the one that has very directly affected how I interact with ideas. Very nicely executed..Version: 0

Good News for Etymology Freaks! The new version makes the appendix on Indo-European roots easily accessible and browsable. You can jump directly to an IE root from the dictionary entry itself! This is even better than the regular PC/MAC version, which doesn't allow such hyper-links. If you haven't used the IE Appendix before, you have no excuse not to try it now - it will vastly expand your understanding of the meanings of words, and give you a healthy appreciation for the relatedness of concepts and for this portion of the evolutionary tree of human languages. The Enfour people have done a great job of implementing this very useful reference tool - my hat is off!.Version: 0

Wonderful resourceI have been using this since its' release. It's simple and comprehensive. Where's the iPad version?.Version: 0

Can this be? Worth every penny!I taught English vocabulary for over a decade, and I always recommended the American Heritage Dictionary to my students. It is by far the most accessible, comprehensive, and fun of the major dictionaries out there. I have always had each printed edition of the AH Dictionary, but I must say there's now no need to schlepp it from study to living room: I now have the entire AH Dictionary with me at all times on my iPhone, and it blows my mind! I'm so glad the etymologies of the words are there; I like how the word roots are highlighted in yellow so I can get to them quickly. All the whistles of the printed edition are in there, including the Indo-European lexicon (use the "Info" button to get there and to see the included essays and extras). Yes, this is by far the most expensive download for my iPhone -- but the convenience of the thing makes this a no-brainer for me. If it keeps getting updated, I'll have no need of buying the upcoming printed editions. Recommended to all who are serious about English..Version: 0

300,000 wordsThe most comprehensive one I've found so far, plus 64,000 words include audio pronunciation. Bit pricey..Version: 0

An English dictionary nonpareilI just purchased this application and I couldn't be more pleased to do so. Please ignore all the chuffing re the cost of this. I have been a fan of the AHD since its first edition came out when I was in middle school. For many years now I have used the third (print) edition and now I can take the latest version wherever I go on my iPhone. The AHD differs from many of its competitors in that it is a prescriptive, as opposed to a descriptive dictionary. I.e., it not only offers definitions, pronunciations, and etymology, but it also suggests "how" we can and should use the language, through the input of its esteemed Usage Panel of language experts, published authors, and writers. The panel is a richly diverse bunch: Wm. F. Buckley, John K Galbraith, Calvin Trillin, Mark Helprin, Katha Pollit, Richard Rhodes, et alii. Every college freshman should have either the print version or this iPhone one. And every serious reader will benefit from the AHD. No regrets here..Version: 0

Great dictionary, a few bugs, tech support possibly lackingOriginally purchased the American Heritage Desk Dictionary, which is very nice. Then discovered the Fourth Edition. The AHD Fourth Edition has many more words than the Desk version, plus it "speaks" pronunciations. However, very often, when I look up a word, I get a blank screen, and have to toggle between text sizes to make the dictionary entry appear. Typing a query in the search field, especially the first time after I launch the dictionary, is annoyingly sluggish. Finally, I'm disappointed that, after reporting these issues to the developer (via the email address obtained from their Web site), I never received a reply. I hope the developers will read this posting, and address the glitches I've described. At that point, the product will be worthy of a 5-star rating. It's great to be able to carry full-fledged version of a premium dictionary in my pocket! This is one of the more costly iPhone apps, but in my opinion, worth the expense. (It's also rather large. I just hope it's not TOO large for the iPhone to handle, and that the issues I've experienced are not an unresolvable consequence of its size.).Version: 0

Worth Every CentThis is the standout dictionary on the iPhone. Unlike others which tend to be just print dictionary's ported to an app this one takes full advantage of being an iPhone app. My favorite feature is the audio pronunciation of every word, especially important because this dictionary is encyclopedic and includes large numbers of words from all over the world. The apps store description does not convey just how encyclopedic this dictionary really is. It is brilliantly comprehensive and includes abbreviations, acronyms, scientific, computer, geographic, biographic names and words and much, much, more. It is a sensational dictionary - who would have thought that I would discover that an iPhone app dictionary is better than my print two volume Websters? British spellings are included as well as American spellings, thus you find harbour as well as harbor, so the dictionary is perfectly useful for all English speakers. As the app is the largest in the app store it pays to take some precautions while installing for trouble-free installation. (1) On your iPhone go to settings>General>Auto-Lock and temporarily set it to "never" so that itdoes not disturb a long installation (2) Reboot the iPhone by holding the on/off button until the red power off button appears. Shut the phone down and let it rest for a minute or so then restart. (3) Sync the iPhone in iTunes. It takes a while as the dictionary is over 300MB (4) Reboot the iPhone again by shutting down and letting it rest for a minute or two before restarting. This cold restart should eliminate any potential problems. Incidentally this procedure is beneficial for installing all large apps. Despite the large size of the app it works brilliantly, it loads fast, all links work very fast. Other developers could learn a thing or two from this one. It is smooth and a pleasure to use..Version: 0

Great Word ToolA dictionary is always good to have by your side. Even at this time. The syllables allow a person to know how to pronounce a word and the definitions are thorough and up to date. Great tool!.Version: 13.2

DisappointedThis is abridged in spite of the software foundry's claim otherwise. first, while it contains the excellent appendix of word origins which sets american heritage apart from lesser dictionaries, you will have great difficulty discovering this due to enfour's third world non-maclike interface. second, there are no images at all while the print version has wonderful color images to enhance many proper nouns and uncommon objects in the dictionary. Don't expect to see the image of the spine you see in their sample page because it isn't there in the application Had i known of these omissions and design flaws, I may have instead purchased the webster's unabridged dictionary for sixty dollars. I don't see any advantage in owning this format-- i could just look up text definitions on the web without buying anything! And the first word I checked on, "paraforms," wasn't listed. In fairness this is a great learner's dictionary for foreigners because of the sound files of each word. However the american heritage 4th edition dictionary is not marketed as a learner's dictionary. And as excellent as the definitions are, this tome does not comprise the full 7 and 1/2 lb. tome as enfour claims. too bad :(.Version: 0

Words cannot describeWhen I bought this app some 2 years ago or so, I was just paying for a dictionary app that I hoped would be worth the extra money. What I got was so much more than I expected, in fact it is the best app on my iPhone, as well as on my iPad. It wasn't just a purchase, it was an investment. This app updates at least biweekly, which to some users is tiresome, but not for me. Every time there is a new update I can expect to see a handful of new features and added words instead of just, "bug fixes" or "compatibility with iOS 5". Features like audio pronunciation, bookmarking, flashcards, spell-check word search, and compatibility with Roget's II Thesaurus make this app so much easier and fun to use. For those rare times when there are bugs, a fixed version is often available the very same day. As for content, I have not yet searched a word this dictionary does not have, and updates continue to add new words frequently. I am more than happy to say this is the best app investment I have ever made. I am anticipating the new American Heritage Dictionary 5th Edition and would love to see it as a discounted upgrade, but if that is not the case I would be happy to pay another $25 for another incredible 2+ year investment. Thank you so much American Heritage for such a fantastic app!.Version: 3.8

Great Job! Almost perfect!Best dictionary! But please fix the following 1. 'x' is too small to hit in the search mode, the word should be automatically deleted from the bar, prevoius search result can be kept below in case i wanna go back. 2. I need to sort or manage my bookmarks, say, by folders to create my own wordlists. 3. Please direct me to the phrase but not the top of a lenghty word definition. for example, when i look for 'take up', i don't want to scroll all the way down from the top(usually takes longer than I should)to locate the information i'm looking for.Version: 0

Best of the bestThis is the complete 7.5 lbs dictionary. AHD's authority and breadth are unmatched. The app itself is well designed, stable, universal and continually updated. I bought this when it was much more expensive and it was a steal then. It's a no brainer now. If you are a student, no matter the level of study, this should be on your phone or iPad..Version: 3.6

Excellent support, app works again on iPhone 1st generationAHD stopped working with the iPhone 3.0 software update, or possibly with the 2.1 update. I wrote to their support and they responded within 24 hours with the following instructions to fix the file corruption: 1) Delete app from iPhone, restart. 2) Delete app from iTunes, restart computer. 3) "Buy" AHD from iTunes store again. A dialog appears (eventually) saying that you've already bought it, but you can download it again for free. Click yes. 4) Connect iPhone. 5) In iTunes, go to iPhone->Applications tab and verify that AHD will be synced if you have chosen Sync Selected applications 6) Click "Apply" in lower left to resync AHD 7) Enjoy!.Version: 0

Great App, bad customer relationsApple needs to be more careful with this App store thingy. If the American Heritage dictionary App was not a fantastic app to begin with (thank you Enfour), I would not be a happy camper about now. I just hope that the firmware update (2.1) is really a fix. First, Apple didn't know that the AHD4 file would brick the iPhone using 2.02 software...even though they have quality control over third-party Apps. Then, they continued to allow sales of an App that bricked users iPhones for days instead of pulling the App until a fix was found. I lost data when my phone bricked twice. Then, they remove negative comments about the App after they fix the iPhone software, which renders the "reviews" of other Apps. unreliable..Version: 0

The Best American Dictionary even in UK !Although I live in UK, still the best Dictionary available for iphone users!.Version: 0

Easily the best dictionary for the iPhoneThis dictionary [an american equivalent to the shorter oxford english] has an excellent interface, surprisingly useful [american] voice pronunciation and great links to the companion thesaurus good searching, including wildcards [for crosswords etc.] and very quick and stable [i've owned since version 1 and it has never crashed] it is a large application so best downloaded via itunes there is a version of the short OED in the app store but that is much more expensive [£29.99 VS. £17.99] and doesn't have nearly such a good interface [or such regular updates] this is one of those rear examples where an electronic version of a book, when carried on an iPhone, is infinitely more useful than the printed copy.Version: 0

Careful! version 2.0 has a BIG issueI love having this dictionary. Version 2.0 fixes the long splashscreen delay and includes technology terms (without etymology though). It seems a little quicker and I like most of the changes. The Problem: They changed the icon so it has a big number 2 floating above it... the same kind of notification button used in all other applications on the iPhone so it always looks like you have 2 things going on that require your attention. Sure, it sounds like a small deal but it is driving me insane. I hope someone can fix this soon - it's the worst part of this application. Sure this application is overpriced but I'm a weirdo - love having "the best" dictionary on me at all times as soon as they can fix the horrible new icon - I'll be as happy as ever..Version: 0

Almost PerfectDictionary: -- The dictionary itself is incredibly comprehensive. The definitions are clear, concise, and to the point. There's simply no comparison between this dictionary and the free dictionaries based on WordNet. -- All words have recorded pronounciation. Written pronounciation is of course also available, with the latest update including a pronounciation key. User Interface: -- Search is very fast, loading full and partial matches as you type -- The History feature is great, letting you view all the words you previously looked up. You can also delete unwanted words from the history. -- In Search mode, the 'X' button for clearing the search field didn't work very well. This seems to have been fixed in the latest update. -- Also starting with the latest update, all words are hyperlinked, so you can click on any word in a definition to jump to that word's definition Minor Annoyances: -- In Search mode, the 'Info' button is near the 'X' button (including in the latest update). Sometimes the 'Info' button gets pressed by mistake. -- Sometimes the selected definition doesn't get loaded, instead getting a blank screen. You then have to go back and choose the word again. This may have been fixed in the latest update; I haven't used it long enough to find out. Apart from that, it's really all I could wish for in a dictionary. Well worth the price in my opinion..Version: 0

Best available!I collect all sorts of dictionaries, and I use them in my day-to-day research work. This implementation of the AHD beats the others by far as a first recourse, despite its being American and despite its not being the SOED (which may have the edge in historical content). Lovers of our language will revel in the two unique appendixes, linked from the main dictionary and fully explained in this app as in the print version, with their Indo-European and Semitic roots. My only suggestion: link from these appendices back to the main dictionary, please. That would be a wonderful enhancement to a superb reference resource..Version: 0

A Great App!I remember paying for this dictionary a couple of years ago and am so happy that it’s being updated to work with newer iOS updates. Thank You to the developers and the software company! If you need a dictionary, this app is a great choice. Believe me, I’ve tried most of them..Version: 13.3

My favorite dictionary since the early '70sI'm no academic. In fact, I spurned so-called "higher education" after a semester of college at the age of 19. But I somehow fortuitously learned soon afterwards the value of a dictionary. I learned that true knowledge was personal observation, not the ritualistic stumbling through the hallowed tomes of data. I realized that a good part of that observation was via our English language, and if I didn't know what a particular symbol of that language meant, that my "observation" was thereby clouded or obscured. At the age of 21 in 1971, I bought my first AHD, and it took me on veritable journeys of learning and understanding which would have otherwise been denied me. Over the years since, it has been a trusted reference. And today, at 62, I'm very pleased to have upgraded to its Fifth Edition in electronic form, now running on my Apple iPad. Its modern electronic interface only enhances my ready access to its rich content. Many thanks to the editorial staff for keeping this treasured instrument of learning both relevant and ever more accessible..Version: 4.1.4

Awesome Dictionary - All Problems Now SolvedI wrote what I hoped was a balanced review of this product previously. Fortunately that review has been removed. Until the recent iPhone update, this application had issues ... or should I say the issues it had were obviously with the iPhone & iTunes and not the software itself. All those problems have been solved. This dictionary is the most awesome available; and the asking price is worth every penny. The definitions are complete & well written. There are other features not found in any other dictionary; and the audio pronunciations are perfect. (I don't know what another reviewer was talking about when they said there was not audio. That is not true. The audio is fine. I suggest that the person who wrote that review turn their sound up.) At any rate, you no longer have to be afraid to buy this if you need a perfect dictionary. It no longer crashes. It no longer causes long backups. It's the quintessential dictionary!.Version: 0

Very comprehensiveI was inititally worried about this app, as the size of it, back in August, caused me to need to reset my phone. I waited a few weeks before reinstalling and have had no further problems (make sure you do all the sensible things like setting your phone not to go to sleep before installing). It is expensive, but it is extremely comprehensive and very easy to use, it also includes pronunciation. I would like the "Search" entry space to come up clear every time, rather than having to backspace delete the previous word, but that's pretty petty, given the overall ease of use, and the content. Under the "About" button (which seems the wrong place, as that's often just developer notes) there are really excellent articles on things such as change in the English language, as well as lists of Indo-European roots. It's obviously the most expensive app by far that I've bought... but I love dictionaries, and this is an excellent one, even though it's American!.Version: 0

BrilliantThis is the dictionary I have been waiting for. Well worth the money. Takes a while to download it, but it's just a huge application. It's got everything..Version: 0

MrIt's not waste of money .. I paid more bucks for Oxford which I don't use anymore after getting this great dictionary..Version: 0

A great referenceComprehensive, univeral, and well supported with regular updates. Who would expect so much support for a dictionary? Good job!.Version: 3.6.1

Love the Friendly User Interfaces & Excellent HD display supportThe American Heritage Dictionary is an excellent definitive visual and audio dictionary for our school/work and every day casual usages. We are absolutely delighted with the iPad HD and iPhone Retina High Definition display support in this new version. This update offers new user friendly interfaces and a modern layout design. We can quickly look up any terms via the visual search window, the alphabetical index or via the new spin wheel user interface. The results are beautifully and clearly displayed in HD. Everything is "just right there" in the same display page without any additional annoying pop-up windows like other dictionaries. Many Thanks to designers and the publisher for the HD updating of this must have dictionary for our iPads and iPhones..Version: 3.5

This is the best dictionary on the iPhone!Hands down, this is the best dictionary app. I keep this on my first screen because it is a well designed, professional dictionary app. I use it as I read and write to broaden my linguistic skills. It's great to be only one press (well, maybe 10 taps) away from knowing the definition and pronunciation of almost any work in the english language. This dictionary also has information on the origins of words. The link to Roget's Thesaurus works very well and the linking of almost every word in the dictionary is very impressive. ALSO: As of February first, the "2" in the corner is gone!!! This is a great dictionary..Version: 0

Worth Every PennyThis is an excellent implementation of an iPhone dictionary. I also have the eReader Merriam-Webster Collegiate and Unabridged, which I had purchased previously for my Palm device. The AHD4 is much quicker to use, making it more likely I'll stop reading to look up a word. Also, the typeface selection and font colors are used to good effect. It's nice to have the option to change font size easily, and to listen to an audible pronunciation. Bookmarks with notes are great for reviewing words you wish to commit to memory. I like the way the search results list updates dynamically while typing characters. I also like the way a word with multiple dictionary entries (such as "mean," which has three entries) is displayed all alternate definitions on the same scrolling page. With the eReader version I have to return to the search list and tap on each instance of the word to bring up the alternate definition. Altogether, well worth the money to me..Version: 0

Hasn't failed me yet!I often need to look up words while reading. Just now, I needed to look up "ferity." This word was not in my operating system's dictionary, but it was in the American Heritage dictionary on my iPhone. I use this app often, and it hasn't failed me yet. For completeness, clearness, and portability, I give it four stars. I haven't used the other non-free dictionaries available for the iPhone, so I won't give it five stars, but I am more than pleased with this one. I just wish that the deluxe version have been available when I bought this one; I would have chosen that instead. If you're serious about writing, or if you ever find yourself in need of a dictionary while having a conversation at a cafe or on the street, this is a great app to have. There were some hiccups in the first version, but that's to be expected. 2.0 is a big improvement, and I look forward to more updates!.Version: 0

Stopped workingI do not want to update to the new version but the #4 sends me to your web page and no longer works. I use a dictionary everyday and have had to go to the web for my dictionary needs. Please fix version 4. Today, the best dictionary reigns again. Thank you for the update, now, all is calm, all is bright..Version: 13.4

An essential tool for test prepI love this program. I am currently studying for vocab intense test. Having my iPhone by my side to quickly look up words (and how to prenounce them). So far it has not fail to find any definitions. It did give a screen blank once or twice. Simple to fix by hitting the search button then hit the word again. I wish the clear button and info button wasn't so close together as I accidentally hit the info button several times. Also i wish there was a default way to open automatically into search mode as I start the program. As I look up a series of word i wish that tapping the bottom search button twice would clear search box and automatically open the keyboard to speed up searching a series of words. the bottom copyright info doesn't bother me at all. I chose this program because I wanted a reliable and thorough dictionary. I do not really need a program to solve word puzzles at the sacrifice of of speed nor performance..Version: 0

Great app great helpI've just upgraded from AHD4, which I loved, to AHD5. I had some trouble upgrading, basically because you need to have both apps on your machine before you upgrade, and I didn't have room for both of them on my iPhone. So I temporarily deleted other apps, downloaded AHD5, then deleted AHD4 and restored the apps I'd deleted. Anyway, the Enfour people were great at responding to my emails and helping me get over this hump; they answered quickly, accurately, and helpfully. The dictionary itself is great, especially for contemporary usage. I also love the seamless transition from the etymologies to the wonderful section appendix on Indo-European roots. This has always been a strength of the AHD, but it's now super easy to move from one to another. Hurrah for AHD and hurrah for technology!.Version: 3.9

Excellent Customer Support from EnfourI must say I have never received a faster customer support response from any company anywhere else (Great job Tracey!). I submitted an e-mail request to Enfour and within a minute or so, I got the reply back. That kind of support deserves 6 stars ... Anyone with sync problems, please read the Applications release notes in App Store or read the Enfour FAQ. I got my sync issue rectified the following way: 1. Deleted App from iPhone and iTunes Library 2. Rebooted my computer, started iTunes, rebooted iPhone, connected Phone in the sequence given. 2. Deauthorized the computer and re-authorized again 3. Downloaded the AHD4 again from App Store (it is free the second round) 4. Attempted the Sync Again and it worked fine. It took a long time to sync -- occassionally appearing to freeze up..Version: 0

Great dictionary; wonderful, fast interfaceFirst, this is the American Heritage dictionary, which is definitely one of the best American dictionaries of the English language. Second, this dictionary (with the 2.1 update in June 09) is very fast, has built-in pronunciation for every word (no internet required!), some pictures where appropriate, and the ability to instantly look up any word in a definition just by touching it. This is the best $30 I've spent in the App Store. I find myself looking up words just for fun. P.S. I have no problems with version 2.1 and iPhone OS 3.0. Also, with the iPhone 3GS, there is no lag at all for anything..Version: 0

Really Great Dictionary but one problemI really like this dictionary, don't get me wrong. Even with the steep price, it's worth it. My son is seven and now everywhere we go when we have a question about the pronunciation or meaning or spelling of a word, we could look it up easily. What's better than that? Just one problem for me, this application is taking up too much space! It's huge! And of course I understand that's the whole point of being a great dictionary. But as an application on iPhone, I wish there is a choice of what to install and what not so I could save some space. That's all! Great dictionary, highly recommend!.Version: 0

Finally, no more bricking, but...... what is the purpose of the little megaphone icon next to each word's pronunciation? Every time I touch it, it does absolutely nothing. I hear no sound. Would have given this app five stars otherwise. At least Apple finally got off their butts and fixed the bricking issue. Took them way too long to resolve that. It's unfortunate that they got around to correcting the problem just before a couple of other comprehensive dictionaries debuted in the store; this dictionary is easily the best of them all (now that the iPhone can handle it), and it could have had a much bigger lead in the reference market..Version: 0

Excellent App except for one recent UI changeThis app is perfect except for one recent UI change. In the previous version the search field is cleared when the search button with a magnifier image is clicked, and is populated with previous entry when the regular search button is triggered. That was very thoughtful UI design as it provided options for different usage of the app. In the current version the previous entry is always retained and necessitates one extra "clear" click for every new lookup. It was perfect before, why change?.Version: 3.3.1

Love this DictionaryBack then this was the most expensive thing i bought on the iPhone , i think it was $30 and 9 or ten years ago was a lot of money . I remember it took me a long time to download because i was downloading it over 3g and it was a lot of MBs and 3g was slow back then . Thanks for keep updating this classic ..Version: 10.0.5

SuperbI have become fascinated with our lexicon owing simply to this handy dictionary. In truth, thirty dollars is stretching it a little in the wallet department, but the perfection of the dictionary has served to mollify my temperament. See, now I'm using words like mollify on a daily basis. Advantages: Loads quickly. Etymologies useful, thorough, and interesting. Consice, to the point definitions. Sound files are so convenient. Bookmarking enables you to store words you like; probably an oft-underestimated advantage. Search history so convenient. Minor potential for improvement: -The ability to group words in bookmark sections and name the groups, instead of just mixing all the words. -immediate delivery to search bar upon loading of application; no need for logo after first load -would appreciate landscape mode -sound button too close to bookmark button. The sound button should be it's own button on the top bar, and grayed out if you don't have a sound file..Version: 0

Great DictionaryThis is an awesome dictionary with every word you can ever think of and all of the definitions and derivations. It is very complete and still has a very simple navigation. I need one area to be corrected though, the word history needs to be automatically cleaned up. Every few weeks or so I have to manually delete hundreds of entries and if I don't the App will operate on a much slower basis including the procedure of backing up the phone to my computer. If you could turn on a setting to delete history after X amount of days this App would definitely receive 5 stars..Version: 0

Terrific! This dictionary is just about my favorite app. I only wish that the Thesaurus had been available as an integrated "deluxe" version when I first purchased it. It was a little slow at first on my 3G, and did cause some backup and syncing trauma due to it's size, but it's still been solid. Lots of words (seems obvious, but not to be taken for granted, from past experience), and now, the latest version on my 4, is positively fast. It even does a nice little job trying to figure out the word you're looking for when you've misspelled it. Always has what I'm looking for so far, which is rare enough for me. Great!.Version: 0

Excellent DictionaryThe American Heritage Dictionary is a great resource to have on the iPhone/Touch, especially if you are a student, teacher or writer. It contains clear, easily understood definitions and even archaic uses of the words which is helpful at times. I especially like that it includes the etymology. Since it works offline, I am able to use it at any time, even in planes. I have been studying for the GRE and every word has been found in the American Heritage Dictionary; it's very complete. It would be helpful if there were more links between words, but the only strong complaint I can make is that you need - no MUST - move the "i" (information) button AWAY from the "x" to clear the search space! I can't say how many times I have gone to the information screen when I am trying to clear the space and do another search. Despite this UI issue, I highly recommend this dictionary to those who need a complete reference source..Version: 0

So far, amazing. While there are some features I'd like to see in future updates, it delivers on what's already been promised. Having a full-fledged, snappy, comprehensive dictionary in my pocket.... what can I say? It was a pricy app, but for this particular functionality, I don't regret my purchase. I only hope they will not rest on their laurels, but will continue to add more features that will cement their position as the pre-eminent dictionary application available for the iPhone. *(on a side note: when installing, there seemed to be a 'pause' while it was installing. I worried, after reading some negative reviews, that perhaps something had gone wrong. But eventually it picked up speed again, and finished installing with no issues)..Version: 0
