✓ False advertisingThis app is listed as FREE, which is true for downloading it. But as soon as you try to use it you are pushed to a sales page wanting to charge per language used. If they want to charge they should list that up front. Doesn't help the sales pitch when you hear the sample voice..Version: 1.0

✓ Great ConceptI bought this to assist in reading PDF. I have tried many others on the iPad but all failed. This is the only app that lets you read PDF directly without having to convert them into text and thus loose images etc. I do find dragging the cursor clumsy and difficult to grab hold of. I have Natural Reader on my PC and I find the transition between each word a bit "synthesised". There are many word incorrectly pronounced in the UK version. All in all it is great to see a start but waiting in anticipation for improvement..Version: 1.0

✓ Good app with potential to be greatThis app works but has issues. I want to be merciful to it because I know the technology isn't perfected yet. It does have a great user interface. As long as it doesn't hit a character that makes it stop reading, I don't mind waiting as it reads footnotes and even dots. It certainly is a step up from reading tiny text on my iPhone. Also, it has a text mode that is similar to Safari Reader that makes the text larger and readable, even if you don't listen to the audio. I'm going to take a risk and say that future upgrades to this app will make it one of the best PDF readers. Worth the 5 bucks which you will have to pay for a language license. It will double check when you start the first book to make sure you purchased the language license by asking for your password. I give 3 stars for it "as is", and potential for 5 stars when they work the bugs out..Version: 1.4

✓ Not bad!You do have to pay for the language you use, I knew this before i downloaded it due to the reviews, having bought it anyway I can say its not a bad app. Its speech isn't perfect but it's forgivable for a computer voice if not quite good. If they could darken the screen and get the app to work on a locked screen it would be very good! (hint hint) otherwise it will drain the battery. ✓ Not perfectSome PDFs were not read in properly. As a result the moving red box did not correspond to the part of the document being read. Vbooks also has difficulty reading "f"s and often mistakes them for the number "6". Sometimes the reader will jump from the middle of the page to the next. What's more annoying about this hiccup, is I can't seem to figure out what is triggering It. One wish I have for these types of programs is for them to remember your zooming preferences when the page turns. Alternately, I wish they had an option to eliminate as mush white space as possible. ✓ Please bring back the old appIt is sad to see an app that I have used daily for many years updated to something with less accessible features. As an accessibility consultant this used to be the type of app I would recommend to others but sadly not any more. I’m sure the intention of the update was to improve features though as a consultant and person with disability, removing the in-document search feature also removes a lot of its accessibility, where being able to quickly navigate a document and find information is very important. I do also recall being able to scroll out with two fingers to enlarge the text without having to go to the text layout. The text layout can unfortunately be difficult to follow on the phone. Updating the app was also very tricky. Without realising I had saved a lot of documents, over 6 Gb and my phone didn’t have the storage to do the update. It froze and I needed to delete the app and hence loose my saved documents. I don’t recall there being a warning to check the space on the phone first and delete documents that were not required but if there wasn’t one then a warning would be a great idea. The process ended up taking a couple of hours until I received a notification that the issue was a storage one, meanwhile it froze not only the VBookz app but also other apps on the phone. If there is a way to bring back the in-document search feature and ability to enlarge the text on screen that would be wonderful. Or at least warn people that by updating would remove these important features..Version: 7.0

✓ Disappointing!Bought this app after reading the great reviews it had received, thus didn't mind purchasing in app language pack. However, the app constantly freezes whilst it's reading, or pauses between random sentences for up to a minute. The small red box that highlights each word doesn't work and remains stuck. The app also takes a frustratingly long time to pause or play, or ceases to work completely. I wish I had not spent the money on the language pack as the app is unusable. This makes me question the reason there is no trial version, and the in app language pack has to be purchased in order to try it. I have attempted to use the app on both my iPod and iPad 3 same issues on both. Bottom line...if you can't try before you buy give it a miss. ✓ Not as good as I was hopingMost of my problem with this app is really more of a problem with my professors' inability to use a scanner properly. Even the documents that are mostly legible are rotated 90 degrees off, and none of it is OCR'd. When I try to OCR the scans myself Acrobat can't read the words in the shaded margins by the spine of the book, so the app then skips the first new word of every line when reading it. I wish the makers of the app had allowed for trying it out on our own documents before buying it so I could've known this before I gave them $5. Hopefully it'll work better on journal articles and stuff that were PDF to begin with though. Voices aren't too bad though. Not very robotic, but they space the words out strangely so it doesn't sound entirely natural either. But if it would actually read the PDFs I needed it to read it would be markedly better than having to sit for hours getting fat while I do stupid school readings..Version: 1.7

✓ Pros & ConsDo find this app useful, It is something I have been looking for to aid my life. Pros: 1.able to pick a speed on speech is great, it's a time saver for someone needs to read through a pdf file fast. 2. it boxes up the word that is reading helps to keep up and know where it is left of on your hard copy. 3. a version comes in female and male voice is a plus. Cons: 1. it's slow to respond. it might be my iPhone is packed with multiple things. Slow to respond means it doesn't respond to your command right away... almost feels like it's going to freeze on you ( it didn't so far, but it's annoying when I want it to stop and it's still going) 2. because of slower respond, i don't even bother to enlarge my page to a readable size on the phone 3. this only works for pdf files, so it's only whatever you have in pdf. it only reads pdf. It won't read your email that you want to send out or other stuff like in other apps that provide. Over all: I still like it, since it does what I originally wanted which is finding an app to read my pdf files for me. But definitely feel a bit cheated with the $4.99 when I compare to other apps that what they can do for lesser price. ✓ Not far offI found this app better than "voice reader". But to get it running, I had to pay close to $11 AUD. the downfall for me is it reads headers and footers on every page, before the page content (also page numbers but thats fair enough). it won't read when the iPad locks and you can't pick a new starting point, it'll read from the top if any page. The header footer thing is a real issue, as I don't want web addresses or chapter titles recited to me every page. The locked-voice off is a problem because I can't hear this when I drive which is what I really wanted.Version: 1.1
✓ Great App! Bad NavigationI would really really really love to give this app five stars. I use it all the time and it has totally transformed the way I consume text books and other things that I can't find in audiobook format. I've use this app for years. Yet there is one gaping problem. The navigation is very challenging. If you try to change where the cursor is reading, you can easily flip to the next page by accident. If you try to scroll through the pages using the slider at the bottom of the page, you can easily jump five or 10 pages ahead of where you are, totally losing your spot. Often, the slightest touch will mean you will lose your place with no way to find out where you were. I also find that the app does not have a great memory when it comes to interruptions. If you get a phone call while listening it will often start you over again at the last place you shut down the app. If you're listening quite a lot, this could mean when you start the app again you find yourself a dozen pages back. It would also be really helpful if there is a way to underline, highlight, or in someway Mark pages for important information. I read long text books with this app and ultimately there's no way to Mark important sections and return to them later. Amazing app, and if marketed well, this could be a game changer. ✓ Purchases not restored bug!I bought the voice reader in app purchase, which was since forgotten by the app, but when it try’s to restore the purchase it just stays at “Please wait, restoring your purchase” indefinitely. ✓ Great App but needs improvingThis is a great app. Very helpful with my studying. I can listen to my books on any of my apple device. I can read/ listen as I'm doing other activities such as walking, running, driving etc. However, the app needs improving. The letter "f" does not seem to be recognised and all words with an "f" sound very strange (very disturbing). The app in general is a good app. If you had it before the update and need to restore your purchase the restore option is at the bottom of the voice purchase list. It’s the very last item. ✓ Good speech, but impossible to navigateThe reading, although slightly choppy, is better than any other text to speech that I have heard, and pronunciation is excellent, as well as tone/inflection. That part of the app is 5 stars - but the functionality is 1 star. As far as I can tell, you can’t start reading mid-page, you can’t rewind or fast forward, and while you can move forward or backward one page at a time, you can’t jump to a page (at least not precisely), which is a real problem in documents that are hundreds of pages. If you miss a word or sentence, you have to restart the page from the beginning. Bottom line it’s just a bad interface, and you won’t learn that until you pay for it, because the free version is very limited..Version: 2.1

Then I was recently forced to upgrade my phone and the latest version of this app got installed and now it is unusable. The voice is very unnatural and stops ever few seconds. I reached out to their support email on their website and got no response. It is pretty unethical to sell a product and then force the user to buy it again because of a “UI” change. ✓ A nice effort - but it falls short on naturalnessI really like the interface - having the ability to tap where you want the reading to start. That is a great implementation. The voice's are not very natural sounding, however. I'll be waiting until it has a better sound before I plunk some cash down on this app. There are other apps, which have a much more natural sound to them. ✓ Why can’t I crop?This was my go-to app for reading scripts whil commuting. The old app could crop the tops and bottoms off so it wasn’t reading aloud the headers and footers with every page. The “new” version with “enhanced customization” doesn’t have this feature. I also can’t rename things. I used to be able to say “Int” is interior, “Ext” is exterior and “DR” is doctor. Even in the demo where it pronounces the name of the product " vbooks " just as you would expect a computer to pronounce it where as everyone on reading this would say " vee books" This is supposed to be corrected by this function in the settings, but it hasn't. ✓ DisappointingI had high hopes for this app, but I have been let down. First, the simulated voices available still sound like computer synthesized speech that was available in the late 90's. This makes it nearly impossible to look away while listening, because it sounds too computerized and foreign. The cadence of the app's reading speed is herky jerky and doesn't maintain a steady pace. The program reads everything from cover to cover, including page numbers. There should be more options as to what is read and what is skipped, say text within parentheses, covers, page numbers, etc. The test that is used is also misleading as the words were probably very carefully selected to ensure that it sounded decent. I knew then that I would have issues with the voice, but thought with purchase there would be options for different voices. The voice available so badly butcher's more complex pronunciations that it just isn't worth having. Hopefully, some upgrades will fix the issues, because the concept is a great one! I do like the bookshelf and music options, but other than that, this app can only hope for improvements in the future that will help it reach it's potential..Version: 1.2

✓ Bug makes unusableThis could be a great app but there is a problem once I've pressed play the controls disappear and there is no way I can get them to reappear. The only way I can stop it playing is to forcibly close the app meaning I lose the point I'd got to. Not ideal. ✓ Piece of Garbage App!!!This app used to be awesome. I used it all the time. Now the quality of the voice reading to you has changed and NOT for the better. It even SOUNDS cheap. Now they want you to pay for it. If you don’t pay your reading will be paused and interrupted until you do. It would be one thing if the quality of the voice was just as it was along with the bells and whistles that originally came with this app but that’s not the case. They want you to pay for a far lesser quality product and the way they transitioned into this pile of trash is just not cool, to which I say Eff you vBookz!!!! And yes I would have happily parted with 5 bucks for the original version of this app even as a yearly fee or whatever. I’m deleting your worthless app right after I’m done here..Version: 7.0

Read the app description before seeing free and clicking, it does say its a sample and you will need to purchase the required language pack.
