Skritter Chinese for Positive User Reviews

Worth itI was hesitant to subscribe at first because I wouldn't consider this cheap, but I went ahead since I was forgetting words faster than I could retain them and needed a solution other than working harder. Turns out, I'm even learning (and retaining) words I gave up on entirely because I thought I'd waste too much time practicing "obscure" proper nouns in favor of more common ones. In my opinion, this is an extremely efficient way to learn the three major aspects of vocabulary - comprehension, recognition, and generation. The algorithm so far has done a great job mixing it up and keeping you learning while drilling you on things you're likely to forget. Additionally, I can't stress how important it has been to see these characters magnified on an iPad display! It not only helps you see strokes better and have a more holistic view of what can be pretty intricate characters, but writing strokes on such a large scale seems to help me remember better as well. In retrospect, it completely makes sense - bigger means more of a visual impact, so much so that I can now easily visualize characters when prompted to. Things to improve: Their stroke recognition is at times annoyingly tied to the font they use. The mnemonics are better suited to people already well-versed in characters and radicals, but occasionally I find one that resonates with my limited knowledge. I wish their web app was nicer, but I guess I can't complain about that in this forum..Version: 2.1.0

Best app for Chinese learningHaving tried many different apps for learning and studying Chinese, this is by far the best. The subscription price may look a little high...but in my view if you want to read and write Chinese it is a small price to pay. Linking into chinesepod lessons and the Pleco dictionary is an great extra feature. Even if your primary goal is just speaking I've found that being able to recognise the characters and see them written down lets my remember the word much easier. If you want to learn Chinese get this app..Version: 2.4.0

Completely addictedSkritter does one very important thing - teach Chinese characters - and it does it superbly. Try it and you won't begrudge the subscription cost. Top-notch support too. I was hooked within a week and my written Chinese has improved beyond all recognition..Version: 2.2.1

WOW!Skritter was already awesome for learning Chinese characters, now it's totally irreplaceable. I'm so engrossed in the app I don't want to take time out to write a proper review...I think that says it all!.Version: 2.0.1

Takes the pain out of learning to write and practicing characters!Although there are a few additional feature that would be nice, there is really just nothing that compares. This is a fantastic app that will only continue to improve..Version: 1.0.2

Thank you.The Skritter web app has made the last 3 years of Chinese study so much easier and more enjoyable. Now, the apps for iOS have refreshed my passion for studying characters. This is THE best tool for a serious Chinese learner to have. Worth the investment? Absolutely..Version: 2.0.1

Great appVery helpful to learn Chinese..Version: 2.1.0

Outstanding AppThis is the best Chinese app I have ever used. If you are learning Chinese, this app is indispensable! The spaced repetition system is highly effective, and the app gives you a nice amount of control over whether you study reading, writing, pinyin, tones, or any combination of the above. Devs, thank you so much for making such an awesome app for learning! This is a prime example of quality apps making the world a better place..Version: 2.7.7

Worth the priceIt's not a cheap app, and you can find flashcard apps for a fraction of the price. However this is the only app I know that checks your Chinese writing skills. Nicely presented and with all the functionality you need this is worth the investment..Version: 2.1.0

EssentialOf course people have learnt to write Chinese without this app, but these days why on Earth would you? It still takes time and effort but much less of both than any other method I know of..Version: 2.2.1

Top notchLove it! So easy to use. Even with twin toddlers and a preschooler I manage to sneak in a little bit of skritter. Thank you!.Version: 2.1.0

Personal companionI started learning mandarin with a personal tutor 8 weeks ago and have enjoyed it. However never figured a way to remember characters. I downloaded this and 5 other apps which I think could help. This is the only one that works. I play (yes play) the app when I'm at home with the tv. It continues to repeat characters in a random order until you get too good and it consistently adds more characters throw you off. It's fun and I can keep track off my retention rate. Overall brilliant!.Version: 2.5.0

The only tool you'll ever need to learn characters…which means writing, and thus reading. It won't help you build sentences, it makes no claim to do this. But for writing and reading, this is simply the best. The SRS (spaced repetition system) helps you learn your desired set of vocabulary in a truly optimal fashion, and the massive library of prepared material furthers optimises your time; you don't prepare materials, you just learn Chinese. GET THIS!.Version: 1.0.1

Great for maintaining skills that would otherwise be loss in the digital worldGreat for reading/writing skills—harder for habit building. I love it when I use it, but sometimes have to remind myself to do it. A notification remind would be great. Overall very happy with the app!.Version: 2.7.7

A Fine AppPerhaps the best for content and ease of use. I have learnt to read and write over300 characters..Version: 2.7.5

了不起 !I have returned to the study of Chinese after a 20 year break. This app is unbelievably good at coaxing those long-lost characters from the dim recesses of my brain... And then making them stick. A must-have tool along with Pleco. Bought a two year subscription - totally worth it..Version: 1.0.4

Perfect for practiceGreat app. Everything I was looking for as a support tool for my lessons. Being able to write rather than trace characters is endlessly helpful for memorising. Only helpful change would be able to select not to finish a list, it is helpful to be able to keep repeating learning lists even if you "know" them..Version: 2.1.0

Brilliant but expensiveIf you want to learn to write Chinese this will save a lot of time, and make life better. It's perfect for using with textbooks, and one of the most beautiful apps you'll ever use. I love it. But it is extremely expensive, and probably only worthwhile for very committed learners..Version: 2.1.0

Revision on the moveFun and easy to use. Contains the vocabulary lists for most Chinese textbooks and standardised tests. Syncs well between devices. Works well offline so no need to worry about finding a connection. Great for getting in some quick revision whilst waiting at the bus stop or the coffee shop..Version: 2.2.1

GoodVery helpful programme, have not found fault with it after 3 months use.Version: 2.1.0

EffectiveA really effective way to learn characters, if you seriously want to learn it’s the most addictive and effective options out there. A bit limited with some of the options and list management, but a minor gripe considering the ease of which it helps you improve......Version: 2.7.7

Addictive LearningThe power of this app in learning Chinese can't be understated. Simply put, learning to write Chinese helps you read it. And the written language is hugely helpful for understanding the connections between words. This service is worth twice its price to the dedicated language learner. It's incredibly addictive. The tracking system is wonderful - you basically point Skritter to your textbook (while adding custom words on the side) and it just manages your learning for you. All you need to do is grab time here and there in your day to study, and the app sees that your time is spent as efficiently as possible. You don't study words you already know, and you quickly pound in those troublesome ones you keep forgetting. And then, over time, none at all fall through the cracks. What's more, you always know, at any given point, how many characters you know. You see real progress stats day by day. The app is slick and polished. The company is small, with friendly people dedicated to their users. I know the service costs money, but your language dollars couldn't be better spent..Version: 1.0.2

A joy to useI have been waiting for years for this app to arrive, and it has been worth the wait! Skritter for iPhone has been redesigned for this platform, and it looks and works great, even on the new retina iPad. The fellows at Skritter have made it uncompromisingly easy to keep coming back everyday and to pick up your studying where you left off. I used to use the Skritter website sporadically, but now that it is in my dock, I launch it daily. The controls are intuitive (even without reading any of the instructions), and the app feels completely natural when using a Bamboo stylus on the touchscreen. Learning new words is such a quick and enjoyable process that I don't know why anyone would want to learn Chinese any other way. No serious Chinese learner should be without this app..Version: 1.0.2

AwesomeThere is so much I could say, but will some it up thus - if you are serious about your Chinese you need this app. I've already been learning (skritterless) for a few years now and even just one week with skritter has done me wonders. I thought I was past that stage of being able to really feel my week on week progress but thanks to skritter it's back.... Yay Couldn't even imagine what it would be like if I could have used this since day one. Flipping brilliant. ......... A couple of small things - using an iPad 1 and the app is, from time to time, a bit unstable... By no means ruins the experience but guys, please sort it out. Lastly, heard you have a super special iPad version in the pipeline (expecting big things) but until then could we at least get a basic full screen version, scaling up the iPhone app is a bit irksome..Version: 1.0.2

ExcellentI've been using Skritter almost everyday for the past two months. I think it's definitely worth the price if you are serious about learning Chinese. I've been studying Chinese on and off for several years and skritter has helped me get back into the habit. I use it in conjunction with my text book. Check to see if the book you are studying is listed so you can upload your vocab list, otherwise you can enter them yourself which is pretty easy. So has skritter helped my writing? Yes, I can definitely notice a difference. And it's a lot more fun than writing the same character over and over again by hand like I used to do, which wasn't even all that effective for me. Skritter has also helped a lot with my tones, one of my biggest problem areas. Overall, really no complaints about this app. I think the folks working for skritter work really hard at correcting problems and you can email them if you have an issue. The customer service is fantastic. Five stars..Version: 1.0.4

SkritterAwesome, it helps me so much with my Chinese!.Version: 2.2.1

Great app!!Skritter is an awesome tool to help learn Chinese! I especially love how it has so many textbooks to choose from, including the one I am using for school!.Version: 1.0.4

Pretty sweet appThis is an amazing app with many great features. When I started to use it there were definitely a few times when I wished the app had a feature only to find out a little later that it already had it. Three small things I would like to see are 1. A more consistent memory of the previous word I just completed (so I can go back when I or skitter accidentally assign the wrong grading), 2. Access to the sample sentences available on the web-based version, (though I guess this could be a case of me just not realizing how to do this yet) and 3. The ability to go to the previous character or word from the info tab (I use auto advance and sometimes I try to see the definition of individual characters for a word I got wrong, but by the time I press for the definition I get the definition of the next word not the one I just got wrong... And to get back it would just be nice to skip the closing of this tab and reopening after I click to go back.) Overall though, I would say that this app is awesome, and even a big improvement over the already good web version..Version: 2.0.1

The best tool out there for memorizationFor writing, it is better and more intuitive than the Skritter site (although missing features such as the sample sentences- so sometimes it is nice to alternate between the two). Drawing the characters helps to memorize them, and is the best way of testing yourself an confirming what you know. You too will be convinced after the free trial. The subscription is totally worth it for the amount you will use this tool, and the constant development and improvement which is taking place. I am happy to pay for the best..Version: 2.1.0

Cantonese support yet?Great app...can’t wait until they add a Cantonese version !.Version: 2.7.5

Fantastic appIf you want to learn to read Chinese, and not just speak Mandarin, this is the best app I've found. The method is similar to what Pimsleur uses to teach you to speak the language, but for writing and reading instead. I wouldn't use this app to learn to speak Mandarin. You should have knowledge of the language already. It does ask you to write words you've never seen. However, if you just press on the center of the screen, it assists you with the writing, or you can select the info icon to see the writing and get background on it before you attempt it the first time. Using the audio is especially helpful to solidify the pronunciation. I've learned about 300 words so far and it's been great fun. Highly recommended..Version: 2.4.0

GreatA must have if you really want those Hanzi to stick . Destroy the barriers! Become literate in Chinese.Version: 1.0.2

The best way to learn characters! This is the best method I've found for learning characters, really well thought out, very professional and also a bit addictive! If you are serious about learning characters, it's well worth the monthly subscription..Version: 1.0.2

Fun way to do serious learningI've been a long-time user of the Skritter web app, which I used with a tablet for writing characters. That was good, but this iOS app is even better. I can practice Chinese anytime and anywhere I like, and Skritter makes it fun!.Version: 1.0.2

Pedagogically soundThis app is totally addictive and you will be hooked - which is a great plus when you need to put in a lot of hours regularly to learn to write characters correctly from memory; and it helps you learn tones and definitions too with its useful audio and a direct link to the Pleco dictionary. As a language teacher as well as a language learner, I can say that Scritter is based on solid pedagogic principles of consolidation and review and multi-sensory input..Version: 2.0.1

ExcellentI find this indispensable for learning new Mandarin words. One improvement I'd like to see is a direct/easy way to import lists from Pleco (without having to go via a web browser) Also it's rather expensive but maybe that's only when compared to so many other apps with unsustainably low prices..Version: 2.1.0

Great, but...The one thing I'd still like to see on the iPhone app is an example sentence feature, as exists on the website. That being said, now that it's on my mobile platform, I find it much easier to turn to Skritter and really make progress with it. I definitely recommend the site to any student of Chinese..Version: 1.0.4

Excellent- well worth investing in!People have always recommended the skitter web app but I never wanted to use the mouse to write characters- now the iOS app changes everything! This is a slick, very user friendly app that works well in conjunction with whichever other Mandarin tools you prefer (Pleco etc). Even if you're not interested in writing Chinese, this app will help your retention for reading. What are you waiting for?!.Version: 1.0.4

The BEST study tool!I've been using Skritter for almost a year now. I studied Chinese for four years in college and was looking for a way to maintain it without the structure of a classroom setting. I had tried all sorts of flash card programs to little gain, but as soon as I tried Skritter I was hooked. I became truly motivated to practice because it made studying so engaging, and I loved tracking my progress graphically. After adding the vocab lists from my college textbooks and practicing for a few weeks I realized that, through Skritter, I was not merely maintaining my level of fluency -- I was greatly surpassing it. Despite all my years of classroom work, it was only through Skritter where I finally knew my characters and tones backwards and forwards, and best of all I was retaining it. I wish I had used this tool during school because it would have made much more efficient use of my time. I now know more with less time and effort. The release of this app and the ability to study offline out on the road has revolutionized my daily life, and I could not be happier!.Version: 2.3.0

Love this appBeen using this app off and on for studying characters for the past several years. Whenever I want to get back into reviewing my written Chinese, I always right wall-subscribe..Version: 2.7.5

Simply the Best, Period.Simply the best way to learn Chinese characters, in any form. A hundred times more efficient than physical flashcards and writing randomly. Worth every cent to buy a subscription and add vocab lists from whole textbooks. It's easily the best - use Skritter and Pleco and you'll learn Chinese very fast and thoroughly..Version: 2.4.0

Best way to learn Characters!Makes learning characters as 'fun' as it can be. Easier than pen and paper! They have all the major textbooks too..Version: 2.5.0

Actually makes learning characters easy and fun!The Skritter app is very very good. I actually find it more effective to use the app than the website. For me, actually writing on a screen solidifies the connection in my mind to remember the characters much more than using a tablet and then having a separation between the hand movement and the visual character on the screen. It's more realistic. Well worth the subscription cost to Skritter!.Version: 1.0.2

Must get this app if learning ChineseThis is a must-get-app if you're learning Chinese. The app has matured a lot over past 4 years. My only struggle is trying to see the tiny digits on the graphs and hopefully one day we can zoom into the graphs. Maybe a few other motivational features can be implemented to encourage learners to keep pushing themselves.Version: 2.7.4

Skritter Chinese character appIt’s the best Chinese language app I have used. It brings results quick and helps maintain results as you continue. It’s been a great tool for learning Chinese characters along with all of my classroom teachings of grammar. Thank you so much for skritter..Version: 2.7.6

Newbie InquiryHi, I’ve heard wonders about this app and I just want to know before I use it: When this app was developed was the forgetting curve taken into account? I am a man of science and I apply it to everything I do so please let me know the answer. Good job btw!.Version: 2.7.7

Very good appThis app is great. The only down side is subscription price..Version: 2.2.1

Fantastic! Essential for Chinese LearnersThis app is world class. Essential for anyone who wants to learn Chinese. Presentation is slick, runs smooth, looks great. Characters are such fun to draw especially on the 'dark' skin. My reading and writing is getting better and better every day. I'm telling everyone I know about this app. Already three of my friends are using it and loving it. Thanks Skritter. 你们都非常棒!加油!.Version: 1.0.2

Essential lifelong toolI had listed a number of frustrating problems in a very recent review and I am pleased to report they have all since been addressed. My concerns with management’s sudden loss of what had been years of typically conscientious responsiveness are no longer valid, and I am relieved to discover there had been some sort of email ether snafu. So I am reposting my initial review, which is a small measure of Skritter as an essential Chinese learning tool. Thanks, guys! _________________ Previous review: I don't know how I'm ever going to let go of Skritter, it has become an essential part of my day. I never want to return to the days of forgetting most of what I've learned, and Skritter proves to be worthy of its promises to prevent that. It works for all levels, is a pleasure to use, and frankly I just can't live life so successfully in Chinese without it. If it weren't for Skritter I would have given up shortly after beginning, instead of zooming along now several years running. Looking forward to future speed enhancements in loading lists on mobile, and even more study options for those learning both traditional and mainland scripts. Would love to see an option for traditional characters introduced first, much easier to learn both that way! How about some more "Eccentric Flavours" built into the algorithm, as surprises and rewards for learning. Thanks Skritter team!.Version: 2.7.5

First free week was more than enoughThis app is amazing. Highly recommend, very well written with a good understanding of how to learn. With so many free apps. I'm. Reluctant to subscribe but currently the free one week trial has given me more than enough and I can still study all that I had learnt anytime in the future still for free. I'd recommended doing as much as you can in the trial period..Version: 2.2.1

FantasticThis works really well and makes learning characters way more fun. It's also stopped my eyes from hurting!.Version: 1.0.4

Brilliant AppThis is the 1st app I've found that effectively teaches, and trains me in Chinese writing and reading skills. Uses timed repetition. I'd certainly recommend it to other Westerners wanting to quickly become Chinese language proficient..Version: 2.7.2

If you are serious about learning to write Chinese, then use Skritter! This app is *the* best way to learn to write in Chinese. It takes care of all the fuss about when to review your old words and lets you focus on learning..Version: 2.1.0

Very addictiveGreat app and very addictive. It would be even better if in the writing tests, there's a way of telling it you can't remember, and show the answer immediately. Currently the only way to get it to show the answer is to randomly try strokes until it deems you've got it wrong..Version: 2.4.0

Really GoodEasy to use, lots of word lists. The best App I've seen to practice your Chinese. Skritter links seamlessly to PLECO for more information on words, but the flash card practice is better than on PLECO..Version: 2.4.0

Excellent!Great product, have been using it daily for a month now. Not bored yet and have learned lots of characters. It recycles well so I don't forget the old ones..Version: 1.0.2

Awesome program!I have been studying Chinese on and off for 30 years, and this app is one of the best study aids I've ever seen. I was already a subscriber to the web site, so it was no extra charge for me to download this app. But even for those who have not yet signed up for the web-based service, this app is well worth the subscription fee. Just being able to study vocal lists from a large number of Chinese textbooks, and the HSK lists, is a huge time-saver. Instead of making vocab lists (which I still do at age 54!), I am studying vocab. My 11-year-old picked up my iPhone and started "playing" with this program. She never studied a word of Mandarin, but now understands the concept of tones and stroke order…after only "playing" with the app for an hour. I haven't yet explored all the features of the app yet, but just what I have seen already warrants a five-star rating..Version: 1.0.1

A great programNot cheap, but worth every penny. There's no better way to memorize your Chinese characters. That said, it's for people who know a few already. It might be better if they had a true beginner/teaching mode for those just starting. The only downside is the cost, but if you think of it compared with a Chinese tutor helping you a few hours a week it's a total bargain!.Version: 2.5.0

Best app for ChineseHave tried a number of different apps for studying Mandarin and Skritter is by far the best. This app in combination with Pleco has helped my Chinese skills massively..Version: 2.1.0

Me Gusta!Me Gusta! 很好! Fantastic, Bon, etcetera.Version: 1.0.4

Great appIt's a great up however there is room for Improvement. The show button is rely hard to use and frustrating..Version: 2.4.0

The best way to learn charactersThis app is awesome, so easy to use, has a huge content which you can adapt to your personal needs and ran by very helpful people. By far my favourite app for learning Chinese and because of the spaced repetition aspect, you learn quickly. The subscription fees are also very reasonable for the standards you get. Cannot recommend this highly enough.Version: 2.6.3

Good, but crashedI gave 5/5 but to be honest i didnt even get through the intro without it crashing, so i deleted it. And im on ipod5... So.....Version: 2.1.0

Worth itLove the app. Just want to thank the development team for such a useful app. Learning how to read Chinese is so much easier..Version: 2.7.5

Quite amazingSleek, addictive and powerful. Doesn't quite do everything, though (e.g. no tone colours). Also, some of the targets are badly implemented, meaning it's too easy to set off the wrong behaviour; and the stroke recognition is frequently way off the mark..Version: 2.1.0

Love this appAbsolutely love this app for my study. There is a huge selection of textbooks to choose from and you can find pretty much any of the main ones. It's great for stroke order, tone recognition, character recognition and in general is a great cognitive tool to use for your study. I wish they would have a few sales every now and then on their subscriptions and a dialogue narrative would be really useful too. Also, some voice recognition to the app would be awesome but not sure if it would be possible.Version: 2.6.2

Great app!Love the app! It's the best! It helps me study much better and is far from boring! :D Too bad this app has to have subscriptions otherwise I would have gladly bought the app, so would've be worth it!.Version: 2.0.1

I use it every day.I use Skritter every day and it works. I can recognize characters in Chinese newspapers now, and the more I learn, the more I notice components that help me guess what other characters might mean. Skritter offers both traditional and simplified Chinese, or both simultaneously. (Also Japanese but I'm not studying Japanese). It's really great and their customer support is among the best in the App Store..Version: 2.7.4

Great appI've tried many learning tools. This is one of my favs along with Pleco..Version: 2.1.0

Huge thanks! Thanks so much! At long last! Truly excellent - I've been an enthusiastic user of the desktop version for a wile, but I'm guessing that I'll hardly ever need to go back to the desktop now…. a brilliant app - worth the wait. And now I can while away all those spare minutes (sitting in Beijing traffic jams, for example) practising. Perfect!.Version: 2.1.0

Best. Thing. Ever.I liked the idea of Skritter, but I was initially turned off by the monthly fee. Once I tried it, I was even more interested, but the cost still seemed an issue. I bit the bullet though and paid for my first month. I am three weeks in to Skritter, and I am fully sold. Next month I will pay for the 6 month package, which is a big savings. Why the change of heart? To practice My Chinese in all the wasted moments of the day: the bus, standing in line, even in the bathroom (no shame)! The app is well balanced ad introduces new characters at the perfect rate for me and quizzes me just enough (due to its amazing spaced repetition software). There are there SRS apps out there, what justifies the cost? The execution of this is simply better, customizable but not overwhelmingly so, and it focuses on just writing, which imo is the hardest thing to test yourself on and push yourself to improve. And of course, the textbooks. You can make your own decks, but skritter gives you unlimited access to literally hundreds of textbooks made into character decks, instantly! It has removed every single excuse I have not to practice. And the absolute best part of all: even if I unsubscribe, I get to keep my progress and practice all of my words. All you lose is the ability to add new words. I don't know about you, but I am only kicking myself for not starting months ago. Try it out, you will see..Version: 2.5.0

Excellent start and good practice.I've completed about a year of study, and have enjoyed learning everything. Aside from a few weird definitions and example sentences, this app is an excellent learning tool..Version: 2.6.3

Essential app to aid in recognition of and learning to write Chinese charactersOnce past the basics it is best used in combination with writing on paper.Version: 2.7.6

Perfect app for serious Chinese learners.Simply put, I have become fluent in Chinese through Skritter. It's my hyperbole for me to say that I honestly don't know where I would be now without it..Version: 2.7.2

New update crashingGreat app, used to use all the time. Trying to log back in and keeps crashing. Also tried creating a new account and keeps crashing. Running iPhone 7 with latest iOS update..Version: 2.7.5

Best character learning methodI can't thank Skritter enough for helping me learn so many characters, definitions and tones over the past year. Now I am studying Mandarin full time in China and love how I can practice characters on the go. I just returned to Beijing from Nanchang on the train and was so happy to find my Skritter app works perfectly offline. Definitely had a productive ride back. Love Skritter!! :).Version: 1.0.4

Great apReally helping my Chinese study, definitely worth the money.Version: 2.0.1

Excellent for UniversityI study Chinese at Tsinghua in Beijing and this app is so useful. It makes learning at 2 or 3 text books worth of vocab a lot more manageable and way more "fun". The SRS system means that the vocab/word is reviewed just when you need it to be. Some people say they don't need skritter because they don't care about writing. I have found that actually writing the character forces you to pay more attention to the component parts and helps reinforce your recognition of it. I find that the characters learned in skritter stay in my head longer than those learned in other flashcard programs that focus on recognition only. Also, i really like the tone tests! It's worth the money, especially if you are studying at University full time or are a beginner and want to learn the basics!.Version: 2.1.0

A genuine must haveIf you're serious about learning to write Chinese characters, you need this app. I've struggled with various methods before but in the 6 weeks I've been using Skritter I've noticed a dramatic improvement in not only my writing and reading, but also in broadening my vocabulary. It's an efficient and elegant solution to the most challenging aspect of studying Chinese, and as the team behind it are dedicated to refining and improving it, it's only going to get better..Version: 2.1.0

Excellent learning tool and great customer serviceThis is a fantastic app for learning individual hanzi and is great for forcing you to learn things that are easy to skip over like tone marks (oh I don’t need to practice that - whoops I do). I find the raw squish where it shows your own handwriting extremely helpful in correcting stroke placement. Additionally the email customer support is excellent. Highly recommended..Version: 2.7.4

Great app!Excellent tool for learning to write Chinese characters. This is the best interface by far for writing practice. If you are serious about learning to write Chinese then this is worth it..Version: 1.0.4

AwesomeI am studying Chinese full time in a class with students who have been writing much longer than me, and I caught up with them by using Skritter. I only use the writing function, about 30 mins a day - feel like I work a lot less harder than my classmates with the same or better results. Sometimes I can't write out on paper the characters I "learned" with the app, but most of the time I can. I actually only use paper in class (because we have to), the app is a lot more convenient. I just passed 1000 characters after 6 months, just gonna keep on going :D 1 yr update: passed 1500 characters, still Skrittering!.Version: 2.5.0

Great App but I need help!I’m giving this a five star review because this app has significantly increased my character recognition and reading skills! I’ve had some problems recently. The app would not open today. I deleted it and downloaded it again. After signing in, and trying to sync, the app said data was corrupted and I need to delete and download again. Hope problem gets fixed. This is a great app that is helping me reach my language goals..Version: 2.7.5

A joy to use, and very practicalI've been using Skritter since about half a year after starting to learn Mandarin from scratch. It's the unequivocal winner as a way to keep up with all the Chinese characters I came across in my studies -- and just casually in my spare time. Highly recommend it to anyone learning the language..Version: 1.0.4

Genuinely outstanding study appThis app improved the rate at which I'm learning vocabulary by orders of magnitude, without taking any extra time. It's like night and day. For anyone who really wants to get good at Chinese, I'd say the skritter is easily worth every penny. Use it in place of whatever game you currently play while sitting on the toilet etc, and you basically just absorb characters without any expending any extra time, effort, or thought..Version: 2.7.6

Essential appLearning characters is essential to learning Mandarin, and I know of no better way to cram characters into your brain than Skritter. I’ve been a user since it was a website only interface, and Skritter is the reason I originally bought an iPhone. Couldn’t do without it..Version: 2.7.7

A new learnerI started learning Mandarin Chinese early in 2020 (before the virus really kicked off in the UK), I was having classroom based lessons which went online as we went into lockdown - the lessons gave me the structure and technicalities of the language as well as an opportunity to listen and learn with like minded people. However what I lacked was the ability or the know how in learning the vocabulary and characters, which is so important the higher the levels you go with your studies, so I started testing different apps. I’d heard about Skritter so gave it a go. Honestly I got on with the ease of the app immediately, it has all the core words/characters from the text books you’d be learning from and after a month and a bit my vocabulary has come on leaps and bounds. It is not a substitute for all your other learning for the Chinese language but supplements everything else you are doing. I highly recommend this app to help you in your Chinese language journey!!!.Version: 2.7.7

TopsBest out there! Worth every penny. I use it religiously twice a day..Version: 2.7.6

Fantastic way to learn charactersBest app yet for learning to read/write characters. The best bit though is you'll keep remembering them..Version: 2.1.0

GreatI never imagined I could learn Chinese so readily. Very clever software, the repetition patterns seem to be based on memory-curves. It's surprisingly addictive, and the progress charts are very motivational. And it's fun. Combine with Rosetta Stone for powerful accelerated learning..Version: 1.0.2

Use it with Pleco and contributeThis is a very nice community supported platform. The tool gives you hints if you don't know how to draw the characters or the tones. The hints are great and just one line at a time and you can keep erasing and starting over to learn it. Try the mode where it keeps your writing and then superimposes the honest character. I love it. The info icon is always there for every character in case you get stuck or if you have never seen the character before so you can study it. I love that it breaks down the characters into pieces and that there is a link to Pleco so I can verify the pronunciation and lookup other useful phrases and even add a word to my Pleco study card set. Great work. Not sure I can offer any suggestions for improvement just yet. Maybe just add some categories for words (instead of just a star to bookmark make it like your self-rating system so I can choose a category like studying the body or nature etc.) and more etymology like iWrite Wenzi has done with their writing app. Really awesome. Thank you..Version: 2.4.0

Great program, silly pricing!I have been demoing Skritter for a couple of days now and I am very interested in purchasing it even if there is a monthly subscription, which is strange in itself. However, there is no way I will be parting with $15/month for this app as that price isn't reasonable..Version: 2.0.1

Great toolSkritter is great and this app is very useful in allowing studying to happen on the go even with no Internet connection. It's somewhat crashy and has a few glitches, but I trust these will be worked out in time..Version: 2.1.0

Couldn’t live without itBeen studying chinese for some years and this app was a breakthrough for me. I use it everyday and it has really accelerated my learning..Version: 2.7.7

The bestThere is no better way to memorize characters. Skritter makes it effortless..Version: 2.5.0

Best Chinese Learning appStill the best Chinese learning app, still plugging away at learning thousands of Chinese characters, and skritter is the only thing that has made it all possible :-).Version: 2.1.0

Any new updates?I hope they push out new updates just to tidy things.Version: 2.6.2

Awesome App - All Chinese students need this! Better than all other Chinese study appsLove this app. Very well made and beautifully implemented. I was lucky to be a tester in the last month before the release and I can honestly say that I clocked more hours on Skritter in this time than the previous 6 months online! Anyone with a Skritter account should immediately download this app. (the makers were incredibly anal about getting it perfect for launch - but it's here now so you can't complain about it being a high quality app!) All Chinese students that are serious about learning and retaining their characters should get this app and pay for the subscription. $10/m is nothing when you think of it's benefits. (that's like 2 starbucks coffees a month) Also you can stop your subscription at any point and Continue using the app reviewing the words that you already know. Finally, the offline functionality is great! You can use it anywhere and anytime including on the plane. The app retains what you've studied and when it gets a chance (through 3G or WiFi), it will sync with the servers but it'll keep working indefinitely without. Simply the best character learning app out there. Get it!.Version: 1.0.1

Worth itAn excellent app that integrates with your studies. Allows you to use those moments of down time to do a little practice, and works with the computer at home as well. Great for every day practice..Version: 2.7.2

Must have for serious Chinese learnersI started learning Chinese on my own in college and eventually ended up moving to China and living there for 3.5 years. I got married while I was there and have been happily married to my Chinese wife for 5 years. I have used Skritter off and on over the years and can tell you that it has been the best tool for me to learn how to read and write, allowing me to communicate with my wife’s family through text (WeChat). When I lived there, Chinese people were always amazed at how much Chinese I could read. If you want to be able to receive and understand more Chinese passively, then you need this app. If you plan to live/visit China, then you will constantly find yourself staring at signs trying to decipher them without even realizing it. This natural tendency combined with learning through Skritter will allow characters to really stick in your mind. Does it still take regular effort/practice? Yes! Lots of practice! But you can do it anytime/anywhere with this app. I think what worked best for me was to add the character lists that corresponded with other language tools/textbooks I was using. There are tons of lists that can readily be downloaded for most popular language learning tools, books, programs, etc. If not, you can always add more! I like to think of character learning as a “fun” way to learn more vocabulary because it gives my mind a picture to associate the word with, which may seem counterintuitive for most folks. But it really can be fun! Start with the simple stuff and work your way up. You’ll start to see patterns and it won’t seem so intimidating..Version: 2.7.7

SuperI've learnt thousands of words and characters on the online version, but having to be in front of a pc wasn't the best use of time. Can keep up with reviews on the go now..Version: 2.5.0

Learning ChineseI have found this app to be very useful, tried the two week trial first then I brought a month, and now a years subscription..Version: 2.1.0

Stop syncing! When I add words, I always have to let the app sync! And I think you can add dialects and feature CANTONESE! It's just just Mandarin Chinese, the app should meet everywhere around China! #SpeakTheWholeChina #DialectInChineseAlwaysInChinese.Version: 2.7.4

Great appI am a beginner but having just finished the HSK 2 characters (and really remember them) I feel skritter gives me some hope I might actually be able to get further! Many thanks for this user friendly and extremely helpful app. Worth every penny so far..Version: 2.2.1

Skritter Chinese is fantastic!Certainly one of the best language apps for the iPad!!! Very well done!.Version: 2.4.0

Thumbs UpA great supplement to learning Chinese. I find that Skritter gives me a break from learning how to speak Chinese and allows me to think about learning the language from a different aspect. I find myself actually trying to read signs now and am noticing that I understand more and more characters with just 15 minutes a day. It's kinds fun too. Good luck. MW.Version: 2.1.0

?I've learned more in a month with Skitter than in years of trying on my own!.Version: 1.0.2

Great!A really great app to learn Chinese characters. In conjunction with my Hanzi textbooks, it makes learning Chinese characters that much easier and is kind of fun too! I would recommend this app to anyone who would like to be able to write correctly in Chinese as well as pronounce the characters and tones if you wish. The app also allows you to memorise definitions of the characters. An added bonus!.Version: 2.1.0

Love the appLove the app on my IPad but haven’t used it much on my phone so I can’t say if that works well or not..Version: 2.7.5

Prefect for learning to write ChineseThe learning system, ability to use textbook word lists and writing practice on the web app is great. I used it with a writing tablet. Got lazy after a while, since it required sitting in front of the computer. The iPhone app is so much easier to use! Writing on the screen (I bought a cheap stylus) is much more natural than the odd hand-eye-screen coordination needed on the web. It's also very snappy and much faster. Most impressive is that this works off-line. I can now practice outside, on the subway and in flight! Better than games :-) Hadn't realized that you allow practice with existing words even after expiration of the subscription. Very generous of you!.Version: 1.0.1

Does what it says on the tin, very competentlyIf you put time into this app, you will get a lot out. No problems, except that some functionality (Search words/look at other mnemonics/check alternate breakdowns of radicals/example sentences etc.) isn't on the app yet, so you have to do that online, although each update is a major step forward. Enable raw squigs, put it on harsh, buy a £5 stylus, and you will make massive progress..Version: 2.0.1

Best App Hands Down For Learning Chinese CharactersI've been a casual Chinese learner off and on for the last five or six years (i.e., no formal classes, using resources on the internet, not really studying for six months at a time, etc). In that time, I never learned to read (let alone write characters). Well, maybe a hundred or so, which I'd promptly forget. Enter Skritter. This is the only app, resource or anything that has been successful in teaching me to read and write characters. In less than a month, I'm up to over 500 characters. It's addicting and (disturbingly) fun. And that's the best part. This is a must have app for any learner of Chinese. There's no way around it. Download and subscribe now. You won't regret it. Plus, the customer support is quick, personal and fantastic..Version: 2.3.0

Love it非常好!.Version: 1.0.4

Learned 2k wordsYou can get a lot out of this app if you put in the time. I’ve used it for years to complement my Skype lessons and have now learned 2000 words. This takes years of practice but this app is the way to go..Version: 2.7.6

I can now Skritter during my daily commute!I first discovered Skritter as a referral from another Mandarin Chinese language learning site and subscribed to it. Whilst patiently waiting for them to develop the iPhone app, I was tied to only being able to use it on my Mac via Safari. Finally after over 2 years, it has arrived on the iPhone! I logged into my existing paid subscription and I can now use Skritter away from my Mac as well as on it, and it is extremely effective during my daily commute! What surprised me is the ability to study offline should you lose your Internet connection. Great work Skritter, well worth the wait!.Version: 1.0.2

Wowsers!Skritter is an amazing app, I go to school in grade 7 and love how interactive and educational this app is! I am truly a skritter fan!.Version: 2.2.1

Love it!Great App. A very useful addition to my class room studies..Version: 2.1.0

Great appGood app but won't work on my new iPhone 5 someone help plz.Version: 2.1.0

Adore this app. Just get it — extremely helpful.Five stars but for one wee request: please dark theme for the iPad version, too? Soooo much easier to read. Still want the dark theme for the iPad (and in the new version, the iPhone too). But this is w/o question the best Chinese writing and vocabulary app around. Worth every penny..Version: 2.7.4

Best. App. Evarr.Title says it all. 谢谢 Scritter!.Version: 2.1.0

Excellent App for learning to write Chinese charactersI use it every day. The app has vocab lists from many textbooks available. Excellent tool for learning stroke orders and practicing writing Chinese characters..Version: 2.0.1

Fantastic AppThis app is absolutely amazing and is essential if you are learning Chinese. My Chinese vocabulary shot through the roof in 2 months. I still continue to use it a lot! I recommend it to everyone learning Chinese..Version: 2.1.0

MrI've tried many ways to learn Chinese over the years without much success but I have made real progress with this and really fast..Version: 2.1.0

Why I bought my iPadThis is a beautifully crafted app, and if you are serious about making headway in learning to read and write Chinese, then I've come across nothing of comparable quality. Along with Pleco, this is one of the reasons I bought an iPad. Skritter is a subscription service, so the pricing can look a little forbidding. But it's extremely good value for the service you get, and it works. It's largely thanks to Skritter that I can now pick my way through academic articles and novels in Chinese. And that makes me exceedingly happy!.Version: 2.1.0

Awesome App!Best chinese learning app so far! Massively accelerated my character learning。 Integrates nicely with pleco and the skritter web site。 The ability for custom lists as well as premade lists for common textbooks is great。 App also allows posting to the skritter forums。 One of the most full featured apps I've used!.Version: 1.0.1

Needs an updateOut of date.Version: 2.7.4

M3and3r3rThe very best software available to help you learn Chinese and Japanese characters. It is quite expensive. However if you are spending a lot of hours in study then it is worth it..Version: 2.2.1

Useful & practicalSkritter saves time and makes learning enjoyable..Version: 2.4.0

AwesomeVery well designed app, only one that keeps me at it, stroke up to clear grid is a great idea, can practice chalanging characters repeatedly as you wish, subscription scared me at first but the free week trial got me hooked.Version: 2.5.0

The best tool to learn charactersThe folks at Skritter have created a fantastic learning tool. The kinesthetic element exponentially commits the words to memory! Excellent!.Version: 2.1.0

*The* app for learning Chinese charactersI've only been using the Skritter app a relatively short time, but I'm already addicted. It turns learning characters into a game, and helps you to keep practicing until you really remember. Minor drawback is that even with raw squigs mode etc, there are still more 'hints' than you'd get using pen and paper. Overall excellent - love 'dark mode'!.Version: 1.0.4

Still #1 reason I have an iPhoneSkritter continues to impress, it's my number one tool for learning Chinese and this app is the reason I bought a smartphone in the first place..Version: 2.6.3

ExcellentExcellent app, I’ve tried many, many apps & always find them more frustrating than helpful. If I’m getting behind with reviewing, I just turn off the writing part, which is by far the most difficult bit to master, so I can catch up. Only dropped a star because I’m finding some bugs at the moment, in Advance leaning mode, selecting/deselecting lists has stopped working properly, it doesn’t change the review list. 😠 But that aside, a very, very helpful tool..Version: 2.7.7

My most valuable study toolSkritter isn't just effective, it'd also heaps of fun! I've gone from struggling to be motivated to learn my characters to actually really looking forward to each session. I highly recommend it..Version: 2.2.1

AmazingQuite simply the best language learning app I have found. Well worth the subscription fee. 550 characters and counting!.Version: 2.1.0

Worth the priceThis is definitely the best software for learning written Chinese, huge amounts of resources (I use it for the HSK vocab lists), so 5 stars even though it crashes occasionally on my iPod 4gen!.Version: 2.1.0

Learning Chinese would be much, much harder and arduous without Skritter. This app makes learning addictive and rewarding. I’ve seen my Chinese writing and reading competency improve through this app. But you really need a clear learning plan. I’ve used this app as an independent learner who used this app along with a self study book the first time and again as part of a structured course where I would be tested regularly. As an independent learner, I found the app to be a waste of time and money. As part of the structured course, this app has been invaluable and my teacher is amazed at my ability to keep up with, even exceed, the steep character learning curve my course demands..Version: 2.7.7

OutstandingI downloaded this just to mess around and see if I preferred practicing on my tablet or with paper and ended up buying it on the spot. This app is F.U.N! Well-thought out and educational, very pleased to have found it..Version: 2.7.4

Best way to learn Chinese characters!Very good app for learning the characters, though it suffers from some bugs..Version: 2.7.5

Brilliant in every way!Superb app. Makes on-the-go learning easy, addictive and fun. I love the way you have integrated this app with Pleco, so that learners can see sample phrases and sentences in context. Not only does the app ooze professionalism, but the whole Skritter experience, from marketing to customer support, is top class..Version: 2.2.1

Learn Chinese the write wayIf you are learning Chinese and want to learn to read and write the characters, this is the best app, bar none. This is indispensable if you are serious about learning 汉字..Version: 1.0.4

The WayIf you really want to be able to read and write Chinese this is the way to learn. Spaced repetition systems are scientifically proven to speed your permanent retention. In top of that it is fun!.Version: 2.7.7

Really helps me learn!Like many of you, I have been trying to learn, but failing due to poor self discipline. Skritter makes learning fun. I am able to spend 20 to 45 minutes per day with the characters. Now many of my Rosetta Stone and Pimsler lessons make more sense..Version: 2.7.5

Great Vocab Learning ToolThis is a great app that has helped me tremendously in memorizing Chinese characters. Skritter's service is also available on their website, although if you want to use it on your iOS device, you must use this app, as the website version requires flash. Note that skitter is only useful for memorizing vocabulary and writing characters; it does not cover grammar or specific word usage. Also, although the app comes with a free 1 week trial, there is a $9.99 monthly fee to continue using their service. I believe it is possible to avoid this by loading all your vocabulary into skitter during the one week trial, as skitter will let you review material already associated with your account even after your trial expires (I choose to pay the monthly subscription fee because it allows for more flexibility, but mostly because this is a really excellent service and I believe it should be supported). PROs -well designed UI -option to import Vocab lists from hundreds of major textbooks -progress synced to external server -spaced repetition (very effective) -editable, community created mnemonics -excellent handwriting recognition -multiple self-grading options (wrong/so-so/correct/easy) -progress reports CONs -not optimized for iPad -some issues when writing hooked radicals (ie 比).Version: 1.0.4

Great AppI use this app for myself and with my students at school. I like the raw squigs setting so you can see what your writing looks like. It’s pretty easy to set up your own vocab lists so that my students are learning what’s relevant to the course and I like the Skritter class room site which enables me to monitor their usage. Thank you for developing such a great learning tool! Depoix LaoShi, UK.Version: 2.7.7

Great resourceUser friendly way to learn Chinese. Well worth the subscription for serious learners. Would like a way to choose whether to practice tones, reading or writing though (currently its set to random).Version: 2.0.1

Simply the bestI’ve used Skritter for years to support my ongoing quest to learn a decent amount of Chinese. There’s no other app out there in my experience that better enables you to understand and remember the most challenging part of learning this beautiful language - the characters. Thanks so much for creating such a fantastic app!.Version: 2.7.7

Great app for serious and casual learnersI use this, and a recommend it for my students. iPad and iPhone versions are both great. A valuable part of my Chinese learning resources..Version: 2.4.0

The perfect complement to SkritterReally solid app - a perfect complement to their subscription service. I was skeptical about Skritter before this app since I can't see myself using a trackpad to write characters, but obviously the iPhone is much better suited. This app is really well-thought-out and addictive like a game, but gives real returns in terms of learning. Highly recommended!.Version: 2.1.0

Invaluable appI love this app! It’s saved me from having to buy or make a million flash cards, and it means I can practice for five minutes here and there when I get a chance which fits in with my lifestyle much better. I am able to make my own custom list, so vocab from my Chinese lessons which I need to learn just goes straight into my new words so it is totally relevant to what I am doing. Worth every penny!.Version: 2.7.5

First rate! The sounds and animations especially make it a joy to study..Version: 2.7.7
