BrainHQ for Negative User Reviews

Reduce the cost!A very good application for exercising your brain with a wide variation of games. However the cost of the application makes it prohibitive to buy. A pity as I am sure a lot more people will buy this application if the price was significantly reduced. It appears that the maker of this application does not understand simple economics. They would probably make a lot more money if the price was reduced as this would increase demand and generate extra profits. A pity!!!.Version: 3.1

Sound bug on iOS - Please Fix Now!There is a bug with the sound when using the app on the iPad (or any iOS device). Sound only comes in one ear when using headphones. This makes training on the iPad difficult, not to mention disorienting and annoying. If one doesn’t use headphones it’s annoying for anyone who is in earshot. Signed up over a month ago and this hasn’t been fixed. I expect much better customer service, especially when I’ve paid for a subscription..Version: 7.2

Too fastI have Alzheimer’s and the slowest level is still too fast. I can’t do it without help. There is no way to start slow for ALL exercises eg if you are bad in one exercise it resets others to start slow too..Version: 7.13

Boring, tedious games; poor customer serviceThe games may be beneficial to some, but they are boring, tedious and repetitious. I bought the full version (about $97) because their web site offered a 30 day money back guarantee. When I asked for a refund, I was informed that they were unable to fulfill their guarantee because I purchased it through the App Store (which is how most people purchase their apps). Have you ever tried to get a refund through the App Store? Good luck! Don’t waste your time and money..Version: 6.3

Brain wave, second review Be Aware! This is the best of this type of app that I have tried so far. It actually tires me which I know means that I am working areas of my brain that are neglected. I do some of the exercises over and over and I can see the improvement in certain areas. It is also fun! I would have given 5 stars but there is area to improve, I would like to see some more variation in games and there is no provision for poor vision which does not mean you are not smart enough, just physically impaired. I have discovered that this app is very buggy! I subscribed but still can't get into a lot of games and it keeps asking me to subscribe. Have emailed my concerns which have been ignored! Not going to pay any more until I get what I have already payed for..Version: 5.1

Why oh whyIt once was a smooth running app for the visual sweeps portion of the app, but now is very choppy and hard on the eyes. Many reboots and deletions have been attempted, but nothing works on this iPad, and two iPods. Any suggestions?.Version: 5.4

Good but could be betterOk, so when I first about brainHq I was totally excited, I have been using other similar services but this is the daddy of them all and the free exercises are good... BUT.. There doesn't really seem to be any logical structure to the exercises. For example, if you wanted to improve a certain brain function, it doesn't offer you a clear path of what exercises to do and far how long for, it seems that you can practice whenever you want which I think defeats the purpose of "training" your brain. So there needs to be some sort of curriculum, I.e do this then this for today.. Secondly snd this is my biggest complaint, when you go to add challenges, it keeps popping up a sign saying that they don't offer it on the app but you can obviously see the exercises and in the actual App Store, it shows you the in app purchases but brainHq won't let you subscribe, so in truth this could be an easily 5/5 but those two points equal 2 drop in points for me.Version: 3.1

It’s really good butI got into it quickly and was entertained but then got held back by consistent crashes :/.Version: 7.6

The 1st level is boringThank you for trying to entertain me. The bird is simply easy. Trying to find out how to advance is the hard part. Signed by me...Sheila.Version: 5.4

Intrusive junkYou literally cannot even turn this app on without first giving it your email address. Not going to happen..Version: 6.0

DisappointmentI am afraid since the last update nothing in the app works on my iPad..Version: 5.0

Internet access!!Why when have WiFi app fails and says make sure connected to the internet!!.Version: 6.13

Doesn't sync with desktop versionLimited usefulness, if it kept track with the desktop version it would make more sense..Version: 3.1

Terrible user experience and designUI and UX needs a complete overhaul. Science may be solid, but they need let someone who understands user experience and design have a complete redo of this thing. It’s painful to use. Prepare to be confused and frustrated every time you use it..Version: 7.2

Might be good if I could access itSays I already have an account and to reset password. Did that, said an email had been sent. Still waiting..........Version: 5.10

Software issuesThere are a lot of software issues. My progress keeps resetting so for the past week I’ve had to do level 1 7 days in a row.Version: 6.8

Hard to useMany of the challenges are good but there are some that just don’t work .. tracking the fish is impossible . When you tap on the fish you are following they occasionally react but generally don’t . I agree with the other reviewer. It’s not clear when you have completed a level and when and how you are supposed to move on to the next . I bought this for a year and it was quite expensive .. I would expect a much better program for my money .. it’s very helter skelter . But ... I will say again , not a bad start , many of the challenges are good ..Version: 6.1.1

BuggyMixed signals exercise is buggy as all getup. I agree with previous reviewer that brainhq do not respond to issues or problems (I have a subscription and have emailed a few times about issues with the web version). I will still keep this but I wish they had better service and they need to seriously look at bugs in the mobile app..Version: 3.1

Games GREAT. App UI is atrociousI’ve been participating in the games in this app for about a month. I find the games and the training quite useful and helpful. I also like the statistics that it provides based on my progress. But the app, though good in its ability to render games accurately, has little bugs all over the place that make it feel like it’s a half done product. Four instance, today is marked off as completed, and when I swiped backwards to see how I did last week, it changed the date to January 2012. That is obviously not last week. That is just one of many little things that make the app annoying. I will continue playing the games because I can put these little annoyances aside, however for a company to have an app that basic functionality does not work properly is ridiculous. If it can’t do it correctly, simply remove that feature from the app. Make it so that to see your progress you have to go to the website. I would much preferThe app to do what it does well and leave everything else off rather than having an app that does somethings really well and others ridiculously poorly..Version: 6.6

RestrictedWould be good to have access to trial full app for a week to decide if one wants to pay for the subscription as the minimal access for non subscribers does not give enough insight to make that decision. - WHY BOTHER TO ASK CONSUMERS TO CONTACT YOU IN ORDER TO OFFER A CURT REPLY IN RGDS YOUR SERVICE...WONT BE PURCHASING AFTER CUST EXPERIENCE..Version: 7.6

Not sure about this AppFor all of the neuroscience attached to this app there is something very unscientific. Surely at commencement of one of the exercises a base line should be established taking into account age and demographic? The absence of this means that there is no calibration of how you are actually developing relative to the population or indeed from your starting point. So this got me wondering about the quality of the science and whether I was wasting my time. Also, I found US accents difficult to understand and also the use of first names in some of the exercises, which I had never heard before but I presume to be Asian or Middle Eastern. I found it very hard to relate as a result..Version: 7.15

Great but buggyI have been having a lot of trouble getting BrainHQ to listen to what I consider a bug. Frequently the app gets frozen on the logout, meaning I cannot save my work. I have to delete the app and reinstall. I have the latest IPad and run the latest updates. I have been using the website previously but the app is an easier way to work the application. Looks like I am back to the computer version. Fix the bug and I would give it a 5 star..Version: 2.2

Does NOT offer "in app purchases"!This app claims to offer in app purchases, but does not. In an attempt to evade Apple's fees for in app purchases Posit Science uses a very clunky system of purchasing subscriptions through their website. This means that you cannot purchase in the same currency if you are not in the country of your App Store. Once you have signed into the app on a device, there is no way to access the website with that email address. All you get is login errors. For an app that is supposed to be by brain experts, they should have thought about it a bit more. I am very disappointed with the app..Version: 4.0

Not for everyone inclusivelyI have encountered at least 3 of these activities that require you to “Listen carefully”. Well, those of us who are deaf and/or have moderate to severe and profound hearing losses can’t “Listen carefully”, especially to computerized voices. However, we do have a greater chance of loss of some cognitive functioning due to social isolation. It would be helpful to have a version that doesn’t include listening skills for people who can’t do those or an alternate choice when those types of activities are presented. I certainly wouldn’t use the subscription version due to not being able to fully utilize it..Version: 6.9

Over pricedWhilst there seems to be good science behind this app, it is poorly featured (no progress reports in the app) and the exercises soon become boring. Other apps, costing less, have a greater variety of exercises and a better interface..Version: 7.1

Too slowThere’s a delay in selecting the correct sequences. I’m not likening this new update at all. It’s way too annoyingly slow for me especially when I’m playing my favourite, “visual sweep” game..Version: 7.0

Too ExpensiveI got Brainhq on sale for an annual fee of $48($4/mth). The usual charges are $14mth or an annual fee of $96. In my opinion this is way to much after using it, this is extremely expensive for an app that isn't a service, it's just an app. The app itself is very good and I do recommend it, however let the market speak and don't pay these ridiculous prices, they'll get the message!.Version: 3.3

Thanks for this appI ❤️❤️❤️?? this app.Version: 6.7

Could be betterThe graphics feel like something from the late 90s, which isn’t cute. maybe that’s a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” mentality, but honestly it just looks like like brainHQ is broke (monetarily), since it doesn’t look like it has been updated since the conception of this company/app. also some of the instructions on the games could use better instructions. but other than that it’s okay, i guess..Version: 6.11

Doesn’t appear to support Bluetooth audio.I think this is a pretty good app, but I’m not sure of its worth. I’ve only used it for 3 weeks, but a couple of of gripes. If you just follow the course, Brain EQ makes you play the same game multiple times ‘for practice’. For me it gets a little boring. I guess I could deviate some. For some reason the audio doesn’t play via Bluetooth. Am I missing something? It plays all my other apps through the headphones. This would be nice if I wanted more privacy..Version: 7.2

Excellent, but...First reaction was that this is brilliant (partially because I love Todd), and I certainly need the exercise. However, reading the review about spam.. If I get a similar experience I'm gonna be cross and make noise.. If I don't then I'll happily pay the pittance due for the rest of the levels.. Be thankful, it's not Candy Crush ?..Version: 3.4

Good but...Great concept, and just about the only brain trainer that’s scientifically validated. However, it often crashes or the exercises don’t progress mid-test..Version: 7.6

Science good, pity about the graphicsYes, so I'm sure the science IS good, but after doing the exercises for a few weeks, a few things are starting to irritate me intensely: 1. The horrible garbled American accents and the nonsense words. 2. The lack of any colour or style in the graphics - grey on grey, boring! 3. The repetitiveness of the exercises as you progress- determining the difference between "ad" and "ads" 30 times in a row is just way beyond a joke. Having said all that, I do think it's helping my mental clarity. But not enough to make me want to keep playing.Version: 3.4

Don't understand scoringThis is supposed to be the only app with proven effectiveness. I find it very frustrating to "do well". Could offer more encouragement! But my main problem with it is I just don't understand the scoring. The bar on the top shows explosions - why? Also that bar is distracting! And am I supposed to move on when the next level is unlocked, or only when I have achieved all the stars on the current level, or what???? I get very frustrated and put it away..Version: 6.11

Free version very limitedThe free version is only one game a day and it doesn’t even let you play it more than once..Version: 7.15

Great brain training but needs progress in app rather than onlineGreat brain training but needs progress in app rather than online. Would like to be able to see whether I am improving or not but can’t see that in the app.Version: 6.13

Muddle333Quite expensive to not work properly. Good idea and if tweaked would be an excellent piece of neurophysiological work-out, but resent paying for faulty goods. Unfortunately on a significant number of the exercises it can't seem to keep up with your responses , on the iPad anyway. Also seems to continue answering on your behalf after you've given up in frustration.Version: 2.6

Maybe paid version is better?I’m currently trialling the free version of this app and so far it hasn’t been that great. I don’t understand what benefits I’m meant to be getting from the games and the instructions are quite vague. Maybe the paid version is better but the free version doesn’t inspire me to fork over my money..Version: 7.1

Not bad but so sad.So sad. If everything HAS to be a subscription service that only means that I HAVE to miss out on things like this app. The app itself is excellent. Consistently challenging without being overwhelming. Used daily it is a great workout for the brain. If you can afford to add it to the list of things you already subscribe to that you shouldn't have to..Version: 4.0

Bad newsIt will only allow me to use one challenge. It doesn't matter how high my score is, I can't move to another challenge. When I try to move to another challenge it crashes. Not made for ipad! It won't even let me select a star, not that I would give it one..Version: 5.4

Brain HGWe do not recommend this program. The Explanations for the brain exercises are so poorly written you have to figure out how to do the exercises on your own. Additionally, they speed up and go do fast ( often while you are still trying yo figure out how exercise works) that the program becomes frustrating and undoable. We use many other brain exercise programs and have never had this trouble before. Brain HQ is so poorly designed it is stressful and upsetting. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!.Version: 7.4

Fun app, but horrible to navigateI came across this app after reading a news article that said it’s one of the few brain apps that research has shown to be effective for its intended purpose. Different games within the app are fun to play and after limited use I believe they do improve my mental skills. In that regard I’d rate the app five stars. However, I rate it one star due to the frustrations involved with navigating through the different training sessions and getting the app to work like it should. One shouldn’t need to call an app’s tech support to get the audio to work on an iPad. Also very irritating is the subscription box that often continuously pops up and won’t go away when I try to launch a new game. Seems like the developers of this app got the hard part right by developing games that are entertaining and effective, but failed on the easy part of developing a user interface that facilitates easy navigation through the app. At times I wonder if this was done intentionally by thinking users might pay for the subscription in hopes that the user interface problems will go away under the paid subscription mode. Unfortunately I like the app enough that I’ll likely test this theory..Version: 6.0

Hate the new updateThe new update is very annoying to play. Too many repetitions of the same exercises day after day..Version: 7.0

No fun, no help, impossible to cancelThis app becomes tiresome after a short while. Other logic games are much more helpful and much cheaper. What is most difficult is trying to get the maker’s help in trying to cancel a subscription. I was very disappointed in them and the repetition of their games and lack of challenge and variety after a certain point. Not enough customer input was allowed. They lock you into a contract with no easy way to cancel and hasn’t upgraded to the latest release. I feel ripped off, and I want out. They maintain I’m on the hook till 8/18. Apple needs to help. Catherine S. Payne, now using my third iPad with ios 11.2.Version: 6.3

I want my money back!I purchased this for around $96 several months ago. Despite several emails to the support desk I still can't get it working. They confirmed I'm using the right ipad with the right software version but still it crashes. Just can't use it. Very disappointing!.Version: 2.8.0

Too inconsistent. Not optimistic about app improving.Update: They have updated some exercises now, and the website UI was updated (hopefully soon the app UI). So I upped to 3 stars. You can at least test it a little yourself. I wish they had some sort of full 3-day or 7-day trial, as the Spark is lacking. I’m a paid subscriber and have (tried) using this for months. Each day, it gives me 4 different exercises to do. This should be a well-oiled machine, considering the company has been doing this for ten years, but it’s not. Some exercises, especially the audio ones, are horrible. What really makes this a 1-star app to me is that I don’t foresee the app improving anytime soon. If you write to Customer Service they are polite and fast. But nothing changes. No new exercises come. Old ones are neither improved or retired (like if they are lame). I can’t justify recommending this app to anyone, as it would enable the company’s poor behavior. I’ve written to Customer Service several times, but again I’ve never seen a single change in the app since I started. Hence this public review..Version: 6.13

Meh!I have not purchased the subscription. That said, the free version exposes too little of BrainHQ’s available functionality for me to take a chance on putting money on the table. I’ll probably go with a competitor. A major flaw with the free version, there is no feedback as to how well you did, other than you passed. The second major flaw, you seem to always pass. I wonder if you purposely tried to fail if you’d still pass. I questioned support about this and they basically said, “we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings!” What the hell, are we in second grade here?.Version: 7.1

Problems with RemindersThere are problems with the Reminders in BrainHQ. I get reminders around the clock every day. When BrainHQ sends me a reminder, it sends 2,3, or 4 reminders at once. I asked BrainHQ for help. Their scheduling for my reminders also failed. Now I get reminders in my email, although I chose reminders by text. The trainings and app are great, but the problems with the reminders causes interruptions my sleeping and lowers my motivation to use the app. This should be an easy fix. but Brain HQ needs to handle what appe.Version: 7.8

ExpensiveThis game is expensive. I would have preferred spending my money on other things that are free or half the cost. I would not recommend this training to anyone. Save your money. I have not noticed any increase in my memory..Version: 6.9

Not as good as it used to beI've been using the Brain HQ for several months. I've always found that accessing through the "reminder" email gave me a far superior management of the program. However, I've also accessed through the app. Over the last week it just gets worse every day. Today, I get a low battery message every 2 minutes but my iPad battery is at 99%. The App definitely needs a lot more work..Version: 5.4

Lousy interface on iPadFor the price, you'd think the iPad interface would be better. It is very frustrating and not at all intuitive. I'll stick with lumosity, heck with the brain science....Version: 5.1

Good, but can be better! Few things need tweaking - the website is more functional than the appI’m a big fan of Dr Merzenich’s work and have been a user for a few years now. I like the app, but there are a few things that, in my mind make it inferior to using the website. 1. Personal trainer - I can’t set my focus areas from the app (the only way to do it is from the website and you have to revert to the old website style to be able to do so). I would like to be given the option to change that freely anywhere on the platform. 2. The focus areas set to the personal trainer on the website seem to not carry over to the app. I have set 25 minutes to be the limit of daily sessions on the website. So far, on the app, just the first exercise from the set has taken me 10 minutes. I can’t really justify spending more than 30 minutes a day on these exercises and would like maximise my time. 3. New look and feel of the app - it looks nice and flashy, but again, when doing exercises (the personal trainer set), it takes time to watch the same exercise intro videos over and over again. I would like to be given the option to skip those and focus on the exercises. Same goes for the exercise instructions before each set. 4. Going offline - I liked the option to download your daily set on the device and then not need WiFi for the exercises. The new app seems to download each exercise individually (correct me if I’m wrong) so it’s less practical than the old one when travelling. Screen size - does it matter? For some of the exercises, is it better to do them on a big screen ? If so, what’s the recommended screen size to get the maximum benefit? It would be good to get this info somewhere. I would really like to see this app improving and being an equal alternative to the website!.Version: 7.0

Good, but possibly buggyIt seems as though you can trick the app by clicking the answer button in rapid succession, thus boosting your performance rating. With this fix, the app would be a solid four stars for me. Fun game..Version: 1.0

Negative 1 StarIf you have version 6 of brain HQ I do not recommend upgrading to version 7. I was a paid subscriber and unfortunately I upgraded my version of the Brain HQ app via the app store for their so called bug fixes. I am now with version 7, unable to downgrade, and unable to access the original better versions of Audiory Ace, Card Shark and other games. It’s been now over a month I’ve submitted multiple tickets to the team and never have been given a response as to how to fix this. I’ve also noticed that when you go to select a game the developers now added a completely useless / unproductive 2 to 3 second animation. I’ve also noticed that after you complete a level the developers added a significantly longer animation that shows your result. This all causes more time on the app with less levels being played. I’ve also noticed that when setting a weekly goal the new maximum is 3 times lower than then previous. So I am assuming the developers don’t want you to have high goals. The developers have also gotten rid of the Brain HQ widget that helps to track your progress. This app is now becoming annoying frustrating and unproductive and defeating its own purpose. Version 6 of Brain HQ was a good app with no bugs. Now version 7 is behaving like a -1 star app. Since these issues haven't gotten resolved I’ve received a refund for the rest of my subscription but would rather just have version 6 back..Version: 7.1

WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!!!!I liked the intro game but then I tapped the plus and found out they wanted $20/mth-- absolutely ridiculous. Super disappointing..Version: 5.4

Can be a source of frustrationThis program is supported by research and recommended to me by my doctors to help my cognition. I have found it both tedious and frustrating. I try to approach it like taking medicine, but I still find myself giving up after a very short time. While I enjoyed Lumosity, I dread this. It would be more engaging if it started more at my level and increased difficulty gradually according to my improvements. I made the mistake of paying a year subscription and recently discovered it had renewed for another year.?.Version: 6.13

LimitingI understand that the company needs to make money, but not everyone has enough spare money to pay for subscriptions. If you try and use this without subscribing, you basically don't get anything! Just a single level per day! This is really annoying as it seems like a great app. I think that there should be more access for free version.Version: 7.2

Is it really helping?I have no idea. I've been using this app for around a year, and the exercises are fun, challenging, and not infrequently frustrating. Also, the app can be rather "buggy." The developers support their assertions that it will promote brain health with research that is published in scientific journals. So I continue to use it, but I'm taking it on faith that brainhq is really doing me any good. I don't feel especially smarter, quicker, or more confident. Thus, the three stars..Version: 6.9

Too much pressureTried the beginners challenge and found it irritating as it speeds up more and more. Didn't realise for a while had to add games with + tile then added efficiency which included 3 games, I found them all irritating because they went on too long I got better to a point then as the game sped up I got worse and it annoyed me. It offered me 2nd level of each of the 3 games but I just wasn't interested. The games in lumosity and elevate are more engaging and rewarding..Version: 4.0

Frustrating and inconsistentThis app has some games which really well but others which work well sometimes and not others. There are even some that always work badly on the iPhone and iPad. When I contacted tech support I got an acknowledgement but no response. However I queried subscription as it’s the most expensive app I’ve ever paid for. The subscription people came back straight away but I’d paid for a year so can’t cancel my subscription until the year us up. Very frustrated..Version: 6.11

Poor customer help for paid gameContacted them twice still no reply.Version: 7.3

Original Paid version crippled by new pricing scheme without adding value.Hard to support a developer that sells a product and then rescinds the product you purchased replacing your original purchase price with a subscription fee that offers nothing extra. You don't have access to the product paid as advertised. You have to pay extra for the same product. Terrible..Version: 3.1

Don’t really understand it!There’s not really a clear explanation of what any of the tests mean to you, & sometimes the explanation of the tests themselves are a little confusing which means by the time you work it out it’s too late. It would be nice to know how to improve scores & also if you need to - the average measure bar seems a little random & doesn’t explain what it’s based on. Maybe this is all improved on the paid version but to be honest I’m not impressed enough by the free version to invest in it..Version: 6.3

Keeps freezingContinually having to force quit as it keeps freezing. It keeps crashing my iPad too, I've never had any trouble until I downloaded this app. Shame as the 'games' are good and I would have liked to paid for more content but it's just not working well enough to spend any money on it..Version: 5.11

Sometimes the app doesn’t workIt will say come back later and you come me back later and it still won’t work. When it works it’s great.Version: 6.9

Disappointing latest updateNot sure what has happened but I just get the same 5 games recycling. How do I return to the previous version? Jill.Version: 6.13

AssetsAssets often won’t load.Version: 7.9

FunctionalityI use this on my iPad and find that some of the programs do not function properly..Version: 6.0

DisappointingHalf the time i didn’t understand the instructions. I found these confusing and incomplete. Partly because they don’t seem to display in full on an iPhone..Version: 6.3

Grammatical errors in gamesSome of the games have grammatical errors (which end up changing the games completely) and the app itself seems to be of low budget. The content otherwise is well thought out but it’s unfortunately a very frustrating app to use..Version: 7.4

Really?!No useful feedback. Maybe purchased version better but unpaid introduction is wanting..Version: 6.6

That's it?That's it?.Version: 1.1.0

Needs improvement and better customer service!I’ve been using these programs since Posit Science launched the CD versions back in the Dark Ages. The iPad version is more convenient, but some of it is virtually unusable—esp the auditory exercises, which often are too garbled to be useful. Yes, even with headphones. And, no, additional “support”will not resolve these issues, only improving the app. Some exercises never have been very good, e.g. (1) the facial recognition and (2) the conversations among people sitting at a table supposedly talking about friends—both annoying and too inane to remember. These need redesign. That said, the exercises overall do make a difference, which is why I return to them every 3 years or so. Next time, though, I likely will try a different company unless these issues are resolved and the whole thing gets a refresh. Anyone who needs help is pretty much out of luck. Responses are canned and it doesn’t seem to matter if they fit the problem (as the developer response below makes clear). At this price, support should be much, much better. And, a picky point, they will send reminders but only using standard time, not Daylight Savings Time—really?!.Version: 6.6

No audio in the audio gamesThe audio for the audio games do not work on mobile. I’m forced to exit about 4 of the exercises early because they do not have sound... without this the app feels very incomplete. Please fix this because I feel very ripped off.Version: 7.9
