TeX Writer - LaTeX On The Go for Positive User Reviews

A Wonderful AppThis is a great app for those people who would like to have a LaTeX editor installed on their Ipad. I strongly recommend having a keyboard as well. I use LogiTech slim Ipad keyboard..Version: 1.2.1

My go-to TeX appIt's skinny, but it's reliable. Perfect for iPad TeX work..Version: 3.1

Awesome!A tiny self-contained TeX/LaTeX distribution, bundled with very good text editor and PDF viewer. And a Beamer class! And Dropbox sync! Awesome, what else is there to say... Rays of happiness and sunshine to developers!.Version: 1.5

Quite good, but could use a few extra simple features...I really like this LaTeX app. It has a nice clean interface and it is very simple to organize and compile files. It would be nice to be able to rename folders. What it would be REALLY NICE is to have Google Drive support for file syncing. Keep up the good work, and keep the updates coming!.Version: 2.4

GoodVery nice app that adds value to my iPad. Works really well and easy to use..Version: 1.5

Great appIt works well and it is worth the money. However I do wish that any folder can be used as a working folder when Dropbox is used for syncing. The current version only allows me to use "Tex Writer" as the working folder, which in some case it may cause inconvenience. However this is a relatively minor point..Version: 2.1

Amazing. The app we have all been waiting for. Very smooth design, excellent latex editor and speedy creation of PDF with a nice viewer. This app is a pleasure to use: I have already written half an academic paper on it containing many large picture files and using several packages (I didn't believe it would handle this, but it was effortless). Dropbox syncing and Bibtex works too! Sweet..Version: 1.5

GreatWorks really well and is really helping me out of a bind after my computer just broke. Fantastic for making slides in Beamer and does everything I need it to. Dropbox syncing was very easy..Version: 2.5.3

Works extremely wellI definitely thought twice before buying this app before buying this app. However, as a young scientist, I am glad that I did. It works absolutely seamlessly with my workflow. Before leaving the office I dropped a paper that I wanted to work on over the weekend into dropbox, loaded up TexWriter, and with barely a click it automatically downloaded the new packages needed (including very usefully, revtex), and away I could go. So far I am still just getting into the app, but I would definitely recommend it just based on what I have seen already..Version: 2.4

Works greatBeen using it on and off for a few years. Love being able to do my LaTeX work on the iPad.Version: 6.2

Nice app that fills a nicheAs above.Version: 5.1.1

Good quality Latex compiler for iOSIt was able to compile my research papers effectively, thus making it possible to write on the go using the ipad pro. Other editors had significant difficulty doing this, especially because they were unable to share documents with other applications on the iOS. This editor is able to share documents with other apps, making it easy to synchronize with a git client, for instance. Kudos to the developer for making a great app ! Wishlist : One feature I would like to see is vim bindings in the editor, to make it a complete solution for vim users. Currently, I use Buffer editor to edit the files, and use TEX Writer exclusively to compile. Second, the compile process could be made easier by designating a 'main' file for the project. Currently, the main file needs to be selected a the 'active' buffer in order to compile it. If a different buffer is selected, then there is a compile error..Version: 5.3.1

Fantastic and SimpleIf you already know TeX this app is fantastic, I have yet to try the new packages however very pleased with the app and look forward to trying it on my iPad when I buy one for maths notes later this year..Version: 1.6

Very nice!Love it! Works great. With my Bluetooth keyboard, I can really tex on my ipad..Version: 2.8.1

Does what it should. As a student, my needs are fairly basic as compared to those who might be publishing. Even so, as someone who does a ton of math, this app is perfect..Version: 5.3.1

Great appThis app is say to use and reliable. Seems to compile everything I try. It's also the fastest I've used. Recommend it..Version: 2.8

Very useful.Use this on the road. Great job!.Version: 3.1

Excellent - it really works! This is the first time I have ever reviewed an app, and did so because it is so good, and others need to know. Bottom line: it really does work! The best use case is if you are away at a conference, and only have you iPad but really need to make a change to a LaTeX file you have in your Dropbox. Some possible improvements for future versions: a) the possibility of opening the produced PDF in an external app, and b) better text search (although the current one is functional), like in GoodReader. Highly recommended..Version: 2.1

Rather goodThis editor has dealt with all the packaged which I have had reason to throw at it. The compilation is fast and the preview is useful. If you're looking for a way to edit LaTeX files on the iPad, then this is the way to go. Its not perfect, but its gone past the "usable" stage. To be blunt, there is another good LaTeX editor available for iOS, a slightly feeble incarnation of its rather good Mac version. This editor is called Texpad. I have a number of issues with Texpad for iOS, the most prickly of which is its tendency to crash, the less prickly, but no less annoying, is the way it deals with packages. Somehow things just don't work as you would expect them to. But, anyway, back to TeX Writer. This app does need to be improved in a number of ways. The text selection thing isn't the most perfect (perhaps some people like it). The lack of preferences for editor font, background colour, etc, is also a little sad. Autocomplete would be nice. Autocomplete with character preview would be even nicer..Version: 2.2

Does what it saysThis is a well designed tex editor. It links well with other software, can handle offline rendering seamlessly, manages packages, etc. I can finally just take an ipad to conferences, and still be able to work..Version: 2.8.3

AmazingThis is a must have for any serious researcher who's always on the move. Compiling latex documents into perfect PDFs without an internet connection is fantastic..Version: 2.4

Very useful & fastI initially balked at paying nearly £10 for an app that I wasn’t sure would do what I needed but I’m glad I took the plunge. Handles the paper I’m working on with aplomb. Performance is impressive (although I’m using on an iPad 10.5) and the PDF previewer is very helpful. I’m not doing anything sophisticated with the LaTeX I’m writing but have not had any issues. It’s always generated the correct output given the input and correctly raised errors when I’ve made mistakes. Has also seamlessly working with the .cls file I’m using and bibtex source. I’m using an external keyboard which I suspect helps a lot. I’ve given 4 starts, not 5, as although the interface works I think it needs more tutorial or manual info to explain. I don’t always find it intuitive. For example, I’m not a fan of the bespoke select, copy and pasting functionality - I don’t understand why the app doesn’t just use standard iOS capabilities? I agree with other reviewers that it would be nice to have spellchecking integrated too. Apart from interface improvements, my main feature request would be to support the PDF previewer side by side with the main editing window. Fortunately the app supports iOS split screen, so I have a workaround of export the generated PDF into a separate PDF app and displaying alongside Tex Writer. Not as nice though as automatically updating whenever PDF is regenerated in Tex Writer. So overall a good, productive app - with scope to improve and be even better..Version: 4.0.1

Functions well but would like some usability improvements1-being able to double tap to select words and triple tap to select lines would be a convenient parallel to computer programs. 2-being able to reduce text size in editor to zoom out and see larger document structure would be great. Thanks!!.Version: 3.1

Amazing appI am not an expert at TeX or LaTeX. I have been aware of and have used is a little for at least thirty years. I have installed several versions on many different machines running many different operating systems. But most of the time I was able to limp along with limite TeX skills. A however when the iPad came into my life and it became apparent that Pages couldn't even display superscripts I started looking around for an alternative. I've found a couple but TeX Writer and TeX Equation are the best by far. I am very impressed by the completeness of the implementation and the number of features available in the editor. I think this is going to become my primary document production system. Also, it seems that the developer is highly responsive to user concerns. I hope this app succeeds, it is badly needed by the mobile technical community. One feature that would be nice would be an option to translate TeX to MathML as well as PDF..Version: 2.4

Excellent and most useful appI found TeXWriter hard to use at first, but after persevering I find it really neat, particularly since one can not only edit but also compile offline. It's a little awkward to move files on and off the iPad through Dropbox, but that seems endemic to the device itself (or perhaps it's just me)..Version: 2.5.4

Local compilingThe remarkable thing about this app is that it does compile tex locally. For now, adding additional packages is clumsy and does not always work.... but for standard amslatex + pdf graphics it works and is very fast. I use it to write short documents on the go, without the use of my laptop. Highly recommended ! With a few improvements (better package+ file management, better editor etc) it will be a must have app for any scientist with an iPad..Version: 1.4

Beautiful AppThis is a very useful and powerful app. It brings me one step closer to my dream of turning my i device into a linux machine. PS - Please add Emacs short cuts..Version: 1.5

Full LaTex system in your pocketI use this app for everything — envelopes, letters, presentations, even my resume..Version: 6.2.1

Remind me: why do I need my laptop?Okay, so selecting text is easier but other than that I have no reason to now use my MacBook any more. This is such a great app and should be owned by every LaTeX user..Version: 5.0

Native compiling on ipad!Massively better than other latex apps: fast compiling on the iPad (no Internet connection required), and the recent versions automatically download any packages you use! I have written entire papers in this app, using a bluetooth keyboard. The text editor is very good, though still not fast (for me) as using an external keyboard - certainly fine for making edits. Support is also very responsive. The new feature to automatically download required packages is amazing. This app keeps getting better!.Version: 2.1

Not much to complain aboutThe "innovative" selecting feature is a bit strange, but maybe it will become easier and more useful when I get used to it. Other than that, the app is pretty darn good once you figure out where everything is. Definitely a nice app for the monetary equivalent of a Burrito..Version: 3.1

A fine app!A great app that does the job of editing, compiling and viewing LaTeX admirable. I would like to see emacs style keyboard shortcuts when using an external keyboard. And I've had problems with Dropbox syncing: but all apps seem to suffer conflicts when multiple locations are used to edit the source files. Managed to install some useful LaTeX extensions - a community repo would help. But to be useful you'd have to be able to install packages independently rather than as all together in a global zip..Version: 1.5

Complete and very usable Latex on the go!This app rocks - I use it on an iPad Pro and it does all I expected and more. 100+ hours using it. I'm rediscovering cool things I can do with latex. Note to developer: the TeX Writer text selection method is much better than the standard iOS method, for serious editing anyway. Please do not change the app!.Version: 3.1

Very usefulWhile it's not quite the same as typing on a desktop TeX, it's great to work with. I've written entire maths assignments with it, and there's not really anything on a phone that can produce this quality of output. Excellent product..Version: 2.8.2

Great appThis app works great for me. I now spend all my time writing tex on the ipad, and even when I'm without the keyboard it goes fairly fast. I draw in idraw, and upload the figures straight to this app, and that's also great. I can make a few small suggestions: to add the option to flag a row in the source, to add the option to jump from a word in the pdf to the source, and to change the extra keyboard rows when one switches to the number keyboard (so, for example, the plus sign could appear and other useful signs from the third keyboard). But these are really small issues and I am extremely pleased with this app..Version: 1.4

Excellent appThis is a pleasantly surprising app for me, since I used Tex Touch before and got used to the notion that compilation of TeX/Latex locally is too much for iOS device. This app is fast even compare with desktop setup, and flexible since it downloads missing packages automatically, its ability to use Dropbox directory (although synchronization to directory outside its sandbag is a notorious problem for Dropbox). The current version already support split view of IPad Pro, and work with Apple Smart Keyboard, its support for Pencil is minimal. Overall, with continuing improvement, this app is surely an index-sensible tool for many professional who rely on using TeX/Latex for their writing. The author of the app is very responsive and open to suggestions which is a big plus!.Version: 2.8.3

A few suggestionsIt is a great app and I haven’t found any bugs, so far. BUT, 1) I would prefer to have the real experience of writing latex. For example, add shortcuts for bold, italics etc. (Command + I, Command + b, ...) or {Option + b}, ... 2) List of all open documents in the top, in order to avoid opening again and again each file. This will be helpful if you write in multiple documents. 3) It would be great if while writing, the app suggests the command you are going to write. For example, if I write \te, show a small list? with the commands \textit, \textbf etc. 4) When you write \begin, show list with the most common options (tabular, table, center, etc.), and write automatically the \end{...}. Thanks! ;).Version: 5.1.1

Fills a gap superblyThis is an amazing app. I've been checking in to the App store every now and again, looking for a Tex app that would allow me to work on LaTex documents on my iPad. I was delighted to find this one, and with the prospect of a long flight, a report to write, and a dodgy laptop battery, took the plunge and bought the app. I found the app simple and intuitive to use. I often use the Memoir document class, and asked the developers about support for that. There was a response within the hour, with a solution for me and promise to accommodate Memoir in the next update..Version: 2.1

Latex on the IpadCreation on the Ipad is somewhat of a challeng. However Texmaker does a great job of allowing anyone to create, edit and publish simple Latex files. The limitations in this app are primarily due to the limitations in tablet hardware. Texmaker adds a useful keyboard extension for the most commonly needed Latex characters. Works well with Dropbox too. This app lets me keep writing while I'm in the same room as my other half. Using a tablet in my lap is much simpler than trying to grapple with a laptop. Nice job guys..Version: 2.1

ExcellentReally does the job! Has made a tremendous difference to utility of iPad. Easy to write. Dropbox integration fabulous. File management pretty good..Version: 3.1

Excellent tex editorI use this app daily for writing journal articles and a textbook. The automatic package download, dropbox syncing, and ability to use multiple tex sources files works flawlessly. This app actually compiles faster on my iPad Pro than TexShop on my macbook pro from 2015. I don’t love the text selection method since I use the iPad Pro keyboard but assume they will modify that soon in an update..Version: 4.0.1

Best Latex Editor/Compiler EverAnd I don't just mean for iOS. This is so easy to install and use it makes what we had to go through 20 years ago simply laughable. Simple Dropbox integration and syncing across devices and the web app mean you can work on your documents wherever you are whenever you want with ease. Everyone who writes mathematics should own this app. Simple as that..Version: 2.7

Great appNow I can edit and view my tex files on the go!.Version: 2.8.3

Issues with IOS 12.2 beta 2I’m currently running IOS 12.2 Beta 2, on the iPad Pro 12.9 gen 3 and am having issues, where the application won’t launch. I have tried turning the device off and back on, but the same issue persists. Have not deleted the app and re downloaded to see if that would fix things. This is mainly due to the file structure being stored locally, would then have to copy the files and move elsewhere, then move back. Since this is still in beta, maybe it is something to look into, to see what is making the application incomparable, ensuring all is working in time for the final public release. Have no problems with the app, have been using it on and off over the last year. It has performed as expected and has made producing Latex based pdf’s a breeze when offline. Keep up the great work, look forward to continuing to use this application in the future..Version: 6.0

Great App!This is a fantastic app! It compiles on the device meaning that an Internet connection is not required. I've been waiting for something like this for ages! The editor is intuitive and easy to use. Makes typesetting LaTeX on the go a breeze. Overall the best LaTeX app I have used on the iPad. I would say it is the most useful app I have on my iPad. I have written full 50 page reports using this app and it works flawlessly. Very clean. Keep up the good work!.Version: 2.3.1

Moving in textI write paragraphs a lot using a Bluetooth keyboard, navigating through the text (technically on one line but actually on 2–3) is a massive. Overall I love it, folders and links work super well and compiling works great. Throw in XeLaTeX compiles and it's perfect for me.Version: 2.4

Excellent appDoes what it needs to do without fuss and bugs. It is the only app I could find that makes me write latex docs on the phone. Dropbox integration is a lifesaver..Version: 3.1

Outstanding Tex Writer AppCurrent version is outstanding. Downloads packages as it finds them and works very well as a basic to advanced tex editor. I can use this to write everything I want to down with nearly as much functionality as my main computer...so it's perfect for library or holiday work. After writing something when you have time you can then transfer docs to a main computer and clean them up and add the image or graphics desired etc. Really very good and worth every penny..Version: 1.6

TeX Writer is an amazingly smooth appI was astonished by how well this app works. The user interface is well thought out and the performance rock solid..Version: 2.3.1

Great App!This is basically LaTex for a tablet. It works just the same and you can compile without having to connect to the internet. I was a bit hesitant to buy it because as far as apps go it's not cheap and there is no trail version but after reading some reviews I've decided to try it anyway. And I'm not disappointed! It does exactly what it says it does. I can highly recommend this app..Version: 2.2.2

A true Latex SolutionI'm glad to have found a tool that gives me almost native compiling capability on my iPad. I'm still to find any file it couldn't compile. I do have a few quibbles: the select functionality is strange imo, word-wise select using apple's shortcut keys doesn't work, and the file manager functionality is quite basic. These are minor points, but since the tool works so well, I notice these now as I'm almost exclusively using this tool on my iPad for all my latexing needs right now..Version: 3.0.2

Works perfectly, small details still to be sorted outI love this app - a fully featured LaTeX client. My only complaint is the rather idiosyncratic text selection method - why couldn't have they used the standard selection tool? Also, it wasn't clear how one can export PDFs to apps other than Dropbox e.g. Adobe Reader or iBooks..Version: 2.4

TeX on the busI am a theoretical particle physicist. This app finally allows me to work on my research papers on the long bus ride to/from work. I keep my files in Dropbox with which this app syncs when in the presence of a wireless network. This allows me to seamlessly pick up where I left off on my computer at work and vice versa. A few requests: I would prefer to have Apple's standard selection tools as I am already familiar with them. Perhaps an option in settings where the user chooses which selection tools to use. It would be a huge help if after selecting text, one of the options could be to take me to that position in the PDF. The same feature would be a huge help from the PDF. Pressing and holding on the PDF should give me the option to go to that position in the TeX file. It would be nice to be able to sync with Google Drive as well as Dropbox. Finally, I can't find back tick to create left quotation marks. Keep up the great work!.Version: 2.5.2

Excellent! This app is brilliant: you've saved me the cost of a laptop. Been using it for a few days now and absolutely no problems or instability. The only request I have is command highlighting, but that's minor. Good job..Version: 1.5

Great tex app for ipadWorks as advertised. Compiles the text files directly on the ipad and I have had no problems when loading modules yet. Recommend it strongly.Version: 2.2.2

Great stand alone appWhat I love of this app is that I can use it on the go - now I can use my iPad as replacement for the laptop, without having to worry of being unable to compile my tex file. Well done, and please keep up the very good work..Version: 2.8.4

Works fineCould do with a bit more polish such as better integration with other apps (make it easier to open tex or pdf in other apps and vice versa), text editing is OK, particularly with a keyboard but missing some basics such as search and replace (or maybe this functionality is just too well hidden to find it easily) However the basics of dropbox integration, editing and processing to pdf work well..Version: 2.4

DelightfulThere weren't many reviews for this app so I was pretty apprehensive to buy it. If it sucked I wouldn't even try to salvage the 10 dollars and just say oh well. There's not much else out there as far as latex apps go, so I decided to just try it. I've been using it for about a week and I'm really happy with it. I really like the custom keyboard. I was literally just complaining about how I have to hit the shift key all the time. Underscores, brackets, carrots, capitals you get the idea. This keyboard has common use keys on The main page and a nifty environment feature so you don't have to type \begin \ end all the time. I love the syncing with Dropbox as my papers were already there. I'll update my review if I come across significant things but so far I'm extremely happy. I will recommend to my fellow grad students at UCSD..Version: 2.2.1

Good and getting betterI bought this app early on after exchanging emails with the developer. First, this app works. I have managed to tex documents even using revtex. While this app is still too cumbersome to probably do any major writing, the developer has been making some great updates that have significantly improved the app. I recommend this app for anyone that foresees themselves wanting to make changes to an already typed paper when they are at a conference or the such..Version: 1.4

Best offline LaTeX compiler on iOSAlthough there is one competitor on iOS with offline typesetting capabilities, namely Texpad, TeX Writer excels in almost every way. It has a solid file manager, with Files app integration. It supports multitasking technology on iPad perfectly. It has tons of customisation and scripting capabilities. It can show `tex` and `PDF` simultaneously, with horizontal split in landscape and vertical split in portrait orientation. Moreover, it has a transparent package management solution, i.e., the same old way as managing any files. The only thing that probably holds some people back from TeX Writer is that it's more like an app written developers. For example, the editor draws inspirations from Emacs and customisation requires editing a plain text configuration file..Version: 6.3.2

Worth every penny if you need LaTeX on iPadFor work on the go, I need a LaTeX implementation on iPad that - compiles offline - works with OneDrive - works with the small iPad screen without burning your eyes after 5 minutes of editing I’ve looked around, including paying for other apps and testing them for what I need, and this is the only one that meets the 3 requirements above. Two weeks in and very happy - it’s worth every penny..Version: 6.0.2

ImpressiveIt is truly impressive to be able to resurrect decade old LaTeX documents full of macro customisations and be able to edit them on an iPad and iPhone without any modification, let alone for it to synchronise and also work seamlessly on a Mac desktop. The editing process takes a little adaption, but it is worth adapting as the techniques employed are effective. First class!.Version: 2.6.1

If you want Tex on your iPad this is definitely the app to get.The best thing about this app is that it compiles on the device directly. This app is perfect for my studies at university and by syncing my files with Dropbox makes this app invaluable to me. It has a beautifully set out keyboard which allows ease of use with using environments and writing equations..Version: 1.4

Though We All Go To Dust, Let Us Chisel a Bit in This StoneEffective implementation of LaTex..Version: 3.1

DrHaving been dying to get LaTex on my iPad this app is very exciting. So far no complaints although I would like the ability to copy and paste, as it makes writing far more efficient..Version: 2.2.1

Fantastic great leap forward for iPhone4At last Latex write and compile on a iPhone!! I now write paper sections, tables, bibliographies on the move, in meetings etc. And incorporate them into bigger documents. Needs select, copy/cut, paste to be perfect. Also I found it hard to find some frequent key strokes. Seamless integration with DropBox is excellent-well done. Great for experienced Latex user. Keep developing it and the documentation. A hidden jewel..Version: 1.5

Best out thereI am amazed at how easy it is to get LaTeX running on a phone. And packages download effortlessly. This program is well done..Version: 5.1.1

Great appNo need for my laptop any more!.Version: 3.1

Wonderful appThis is a wonderful app for writing tex documents. I was particularly impressed by its small size and integration of styles for writing papers for mathematical journals. I would highly recommend this. Great job... Keep going.Version: 1.4

Does what it saysMy LaTeX and TeX needs are rather rudimentary. I use it to write long documents, and for that it behaves quite traditionally for me. I like the added integration for other on-line locations such as iCloud and OneDrive. I have occasional pictures in my documents, but not an abundance, so I can't say I've "stress-tested" the app. I do, however, often use TexTastic as an editor when I want dynamic font sizing for the editor. Does what it says. I've not seen it crash and burn on anything..Version: 4.0.1

An excellent appThis app has turned my iPad into a serious work tool. I rely heavily on LaTeX for producing papers, articles, lecture notes etc which contain a high level of mathematical type setting. I have an installation of the MikTeX compiler and TeXnicCenter on my laptop and desktop machines and this app is a great addition to my armoury. I recommend using TeX Writer with an external keyboard, especially for longer pieces of work, although it works perfectly well with the iPad screen keyboard. I'm not sure how useful (at least to me) the app would be on an iPhone, but perhaps for typesetting one or two equations it would be ok. The app syncs with no problem to dropbox. The only thing that's missing (or I have failed to find) is a spell-check. I have worked around this by copying the source file to a blank document in google drive, using the spell-check, then returning it to TeX Writer..Version: 1.5

TeX Writer - LaTeX on the flyI'm extremely new to using LaTeX as a document editor. I had heard many good things about LaTeX for a long time but never was able to get around to getting it running on my home computers. As a university student I was always on the go and so I began looking for an iOS variation that would suit my needs. TeX Writer was the only app that offered in app compiling. I'm still learning the ropes with LaTeX, but with TeX Writer it won't be hard or take long! Great App! It's not perfect, there seems to still be some functionality issues when using a keyboard, but the developer *seems* to be involved. Time will tell. I'd really like to see this get updated more frequently!.Version: 2.5.3

Magnificent app!First of full kudos to the developers! Being a theoretical particle physicist who uses his iPad constantly scribbling lecture notes and seminar notes, and calculations into handwriting apps, reading publications on the iPad almost exclusively these days, and performance symbolic computations off-line using some available apps as well as with Wolfram Alpha or a remote login into main machine online, this is an app I have been waiting for for a long stretch of time. finally off-line LaTeX typesetting with figures and PDF output locally on the iPad! The basic functionality is great, I can now basically draft-write whole papers on the iPad alone! Then new find/replace function has its advantages I admit, though that it works differently Apple's standard cross-app implementation, I find sometimes still a bit confusing - but that probably says something more about me than the implementation it self. ;-) Having said this - there is one basic functionality which should be added to the app directly in the next update - because it is ubiquitous in use: - please, support for hyphenation ! This would render the almost perfect then virtually perfect! ;-).Version: 1.3.1

Very Good ProductI tried this software by composing one of my technical report, which contains equations and figures. I am very satisfied with the software, especially the DropBox sync. and PDF preview functions. I wish the software can be further improved in figure including function: for now, the figures that users want to insert their documents are saved in photo app. I hope Tex Writer can allow users to save their figures independently in a sub-folder of the folder where the .tex files are saved. Anyway, this is a very good product to me..Version: 2.3.1

Good, but still need improvementsOther than the lack of support of using an external keyboard and TextExpander. The app is great for making edits on the fly or writing the first draft to a latex document..Version: 1.5

InvaluableIt is difficult to see how it could be improved. An excellent app..Version: 2.5.2

Awesome update 5This is really good update and I love the split view!.Version: 4.0.1

IncredibleVery responsive and fast. Intuitive design and clever tricks to make finger-typing easier. I had happy girly giggle fits last night when I first tried the app because it's this awesome. This made me question all other apps I own (why aren't they as fast/clever/simple/awesome...?)..Version: 2.7

Overall works wellUI minimalistic but great to focus on writing. Compilation is fast and split view works well. Works well together with working copy to manage the git..Version: 6.2.1

Everything you needAwesome app, when you don’t have LaTex on your Mac or Pc..Version: 3.1

Excellent TeX editorI'm really happy with this app. I can compile TeX files and access all my uni work in my Dropbox folder (see the symbolic link workaround on their website to access files that you already have). This is a really useful tool for a great price..Version: 2.7

Great App!It is a little buggy when using it with a bluetooth keyboard, but otherwise it is an excellent app! Would strongly recommend it to anyone who loves a beautifully typset document..Version: 2.8.2

Almost perfect LaTeX appThis is the app that most students and scholars have been waiting for. I need a LaTeX writer for work and until now I would have to carry my laptop around everywhere or write it out on Pages and then export it to create PDFs. Now i just need my trusty iPad. If the developer could just add copy/ cut/ paste functions then it will be perfect. Thanks for this Chaoji!!.Version: 1.5

GoodI use Tex Writer to compile Latex documents with a lot of mathematical content. I find the application very good for my purposes. If you are used to using a Windows based Tex editor or web based editor then you may find Tex Writer rather raw in the sense that there is no GUI to speak of, but saying that I have not found a better iPad application for this purpose. I have yet to come across unsupported commands so the app does everything I need and seems to be bug free..Version: 2.5.4

Very good, with excellent Dropbox synchronisation. An excellent editor and compiler that syncs perfectly with Dropbox so I can edit the same files on different devices without conflicts..Version: 2.8.4

ExcellentI have been using this app for several days now, and so far it seems excellent. I have been able to easily send papers to and from my dropbox account so that I can work on them both on the ipad and from my work and home computers. The interface is spare, but nicely so. I have had no difficulty with any of my packages, and my files have compiled very quickly. The app also works perfectly with my bluetooth keyboard (I have had some sluggishness from other apps in the past). The pdf viewer seems to work well, also. It would be nice to have a dropdown menu with commonly used commands and symbols (like I have in Texstudio and Latexian on my other computers). However, this is a very small thing, as commands are easy to search online. All told, I would highly recommend this app..Version: 2.4

Great appFirst of all, I'd like to note that this app does actually compile locally on your device without any internet connection or any connection to some compiling server. It comes with basic packages, but the app dev provides a detailed description of how to install custom packages, and it works just fine (for most parts). As for font, it actually is a challenge for non-expert users such as myself, exactly as described by the app dev. To note is how well the app actually works on a mobile device!!! Also, the communication with app dev is excellent. They provide you with all the help required and are pretty quick in responding. I would definitely recommend this app for those who'd like to write or edit tex on the go, and would like to compile locally to visualize their document. Definitely worth investing 10$ for those who are willing..Version: 1.4

Great appGreat app, does exactly what it is meant to do. Google drive sync would be brilliant though!.Version: 2.5

Pretty good overallOn the whole, very good. There may be some room for improvement. Such as a better library of recognised functions and maybe the ability to tab complete on them? It would also be nice to be able to edit the shortcut keys to use different functions, I don't particularly need quick access to a delete-all button....Version: 2.7

Version 4 really improves DropBox supportI use this app a lot to write notes and tutorials for my courses and it has been an invaluable tool for me. For anybody with memories of old implementations of LaTeX on Mac OS (for example OzTeX), the way this app. automatically fetches packages online when needed simply seems magical. The one main weakness for me was the shaky DropBox support. Yes, it worked, but only as long as the DropBox folder was only used to push edits done on the iOS side. Any work done on the macOS side would invariably lead to conflicts that this App was doing a terrible job of solving (pretty much, the only solution was to flush the entire folder). Fortunately, v. 4 seems to have solved virtually all DropBox problems for me. It really works the way it should. Many thanks to the developer. The only remaining minor irritants are that the editor is limited. Yes I know that I can modify the config file to change the presets, but it is somewhat cumbersome. I used to hate the copying mechanism that the developer seems to be very proud of... I just got used to it and it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. Anyway, this is one of a handful of apps that are absolutely essential on my iPad and that I use every day. I Love it!.Version: 4.0.1

Very usefulDoes what it is expected to do, can handle even complex projects. The only downside is that one cannot switch between locations in the tex file and the pdf file (click on a word in the pdf and you’ll find the location of this word in the tex file and vice versa). So editing large files may be bothersome and the app cannot compete with user-friendliness of overleaf-likes. Still, it is the best offline Latex editor on iPad I found..Version: 6.3.2

Works beautifullyCompiling offline, seamless synching with Dropbox allowing me to continue to work on documents I started on my desktop, possibility to add new packages, transparent display of the compile logs makes it easy to debug. Great job! The price? Well, some people think that any app over $0.99 on iOS is expensive. On the other hand, few people care about paying $5-7 for a lunch, a one off. Question: How much is the convenience of this app worth to you? How much is your time worth? If you are a TeX user, this app is a must have..Version: 2.6.1

Most stable Latex app at the momentThis app has allowed me to use my iPad as my primary work gadget. I like the stability of the app, and the fact that it even allows me to customize the editor to my needs. The text selection method may take a little getting used to, and I sometimes have trouble selecting text properly using the Apple Pencil. Also, scrolling on the editor seems to be a little choppy. With the new iPad's Pro Motion technology, I hope the app releases an update to fix this. Two improvements would be great: 1) The ability to see the pdf output side by side with the editor (another TeX app does this, but the other app has stability issues). 2) Being able to access any folder in my dropbox, and not just those in the TeX Writer folder. This makes it easier for me to switch between using my iPad when I am on the move, and my desktop when I am at home. I think with these two updates Tex Writer will be very close to Tex experience on a laptop or a desktop. All in all I highly recommend giving this app a shot!.Version: 3.1

LaTeX on the goLatex on the iPad that just works. So convenient being able to take my work with me with a small iPad footprint. Obviously typing on an iPad is not ideal over long periods of time but it’s great when travelling or working on the train/in coffee shops etc. Also, the developer is active, having recently added split screen support which allows for editing of tex files while simultaneously viewing the PDF. For me this was the only thing I thought was missing from the app before..Version: 5.1.1

Very useful and fastI’m very glad, in iPad there is such an productivity app, this makes iPad just like a computer, very good!.Version: 5.1

New Version is much better (Updated for Version 5)[Written a few months before Version 5: Although some automatic sync isn’t great, it has much better version control. Incredibly stable and easy to use a wide-variety of packages (I was particularly impressed with how easy it was to make advanced geometric figures with tikz). Very happy I purchased it.] I just recently updated to the Version 5. This was a massive improvement. The automatic sync is still wanting (as in, I need to hit “sync” whenever I think about it in order to sync my documents), but the editor is fantastic. Split view has made this a supremely useable and productive editor for myself. I still prefer TeXStudio on my computer, but on the go this is the best option..Version: 5.0

Good TeX editorWorks well and has a lot of great features. I just wish it were easier to select text.Version: 3.1

Works well!I use LaTeX on my computer, and it's so convenient to have it on my iPad and iPhone 6 Plus as well. It makes me so productive since I can work and make documents anywhere and any time. I love how it integrates with other apps. I use a combined file browser, file server, FTP client app, Documents, and I can move my Tex and PDF files back and forth between the apps. The new text editor is much better than the original and a lot easier to use. The one thing I think would be helpful is have a video tutorial to show us how the app works and explain how to use the features. The app developer is responsive and fixes issues with the app quickly, so if you have problems, don't hesitate to email. I've had some problems before, and they have all been fixed around a week after I reported them..Version: 6.3.2

Clean interface, solid performanceNever had an issue with this app. Very easy to use..Version: 2.4

SuperlativeI have been having daily appointments with TeX Writer for a long time. It is easily the main tool in my routine writing of scientific papers and books, or when preparing presentations and creating typographic artwork for my publications. Without TeX Writer I could not work wherever I am, on my Ipad, and I would not be able to use my Ipad, which I love. Performance is astonishing, both in the basic version and in the Pro upgrade of the app, this latter offering excellent online XeLaTeX support. I am totally satisfied with TeX Writer's superlative Dropbox integration and file and figure management, and its extended keyboard. I use the endless collection of LaTeX facilities, including TiKz, fontenc, filecontent and beamer to combine productivity and fun. I recently encountered a XeLaTeX compilation problem. An email to the TeX Writer support team was sufficient to have the problem fixed in less than two days..Version: 6.0.2

First class appI bought this to write up some math notes for a friend. Getting the hang of it does not take long, then it just flows......Version: 1.4

Very good product, excellent supportThis product is an extremely nice implementation of LaTeX for the iPad, and is the only one I’ve found that actually works well for `cloud free’ LaTeX document compiling. Writing documents is easy in the app, and the Dropbox integration works very well. I had a question when first using the App, and the developer responded nearly in real time, making the support another attractive feature. Five Stars!.Version: 6.1

AwesomeThe debug log could be a bit more clear, but other than that I would give it 5stars!.Version: 1.5

From a long way through computingI have been "computing" since quite a while (hint: >= paper tapes). Now I am sitting here looking at my compiled pfd of a 44 page Latex opus with lots of references and graphics - and I just did it by touching an icon in this little application Tex Writer running on my iPhone. It is not so that I did not keep up-to-date on all the computing changes and technologies. Quite the opposite. Still, I wonder and feel happy, when I see the clean - so rapidly produced - documents from Tex Writer - my macro customizations not with-standing. The developer has done a superb job of letting me work whenever and wherever I feel the lights blinking. BTW: This app integrates well with results out of Wolfram Alpha. Thank you..Version: 2.8.4

Very nice app, but lacks that final touchThe one feature that’s missing is being able to navigate between the tex and the pdf (e.g. click on the tex to get to the same part in the PDF and vice-versa). Other than that, I do a lot of writing on my phone and on my iPad using this app, and it’s been wonderful so far..Version: 5.2

Great AppWorks great with Dropbox and Overleaf! Tried many others but this is the best so far. Please introduce a dark mode for this application or different colour schemes for ease viewing. Please auto recompile when saved so that PDF can be viewed as changes are made. Otherwise great work!.Version: 6.0.2

Pretty goodI downloaded this more for curiosity as I would like an offline latex environment on my iPad. I have been surprised by how well the basic stuff works. Ok some of the advanced packages can't be used even with the trick suggested in the documentation. Some work and some don't. But that's besides the point. This is a basic but good system for editing tex files on the iPad. I will be using it and look forward to the update promised in the documentation..Version: 1.2.1

Delete glitchFor the most part, this app is excellent, with many useful features and good syncing across devices. However, it has an annoying glitch, whereby occasionally a single press of the delete key after relocating the cursor will delete around ten characters..Version: 2.8.2

SuperbThe best thing you can say about this app is the most important thing... it just works. It takes all the complexity of a tex distribution and handles it without missing a beat. The automatic downloading of packages is so slick I add unneeded packages in my preamble just to see if it can find it... It does. Dropbox integration means you can seamlessly switch between your laptop and your phone/tablet. I would say the biggest thing missing is a pattern-based search and replace (maybe it's possible using the scripting interface but it would be good to have it as a basic feature)..Version: 2.7

Excellent AppExcellent full featured App; all LaTeX writers should experience. Security of knowing all compiling is happening onboard your iOS device. There is no off board server compiling involved at all. This makes the App extremely fast even with large documents and keeps intellectual property secure. Keyboard very intuitive and easy to use. Excellent cut and paste implementation. Excellent file management. I personally haven't come across any LaTeX feature that is missing or not supported..Version: 1.5

Good purchaseA very good LaTex app for iPad. Works well..Version: 3.1

Fits my needs perfectlyThe app works quite well and as mentioned in other reviews fills a niche quite well. I would really love it if the developers would work toward auto-completing commands as in PC LaTeX apps..Version: 5.3.1

TeX Writer is AwesomeIf you are a maths/physics teacher writing presentations, this is for you. I have not pushed this app to the limit yet but it is an amazing type-setting program for maths and tables. It is early days but if this app can do all the things that TexShop can do they are on to a winner. The combination of TeX Writer and Drop box is a powerful competitor to Pages for those that want professional type-setting..Version: 2.2.2

Very Useful AppI have found this to be a very useful application. My LaTeX needs are modest but are completely met by this app. Dropbox synchronization works well for me..Version: 2.8.2

Marginally better than TeXpadCompiling works perfectly, and I've never had a problem with packages or encoding, which is great because I often write in French. The shortcuts for keyboard arrows don't work, probably because of the extended virtual keyboard. Very nice to use with the virtual keyboard, ok with a physical one. The file manager is not very nice to use, but the Dropbox sync feature is very useful. Please let this app never stop being maintained..Version: 3.1
