New Scientist for Positive User Reviews

Best science magBeen reading new scientist for over 40 years and can’t live without it! I love reading the articles in order of my curiosity when they come. I’ve just changed to digital and find it a great asset with even more resources available than having hard copy. I never thought I’d say this but I’m finding I prefer digital as the copies were always stacking up. The scrapbook option for articles is brilliant, as a new user I’m not sure how to scrapbook across devices but I’m sure I’ll figure it out:).Version: 2.6.1

Return of an old pleasureNew Scientist was a familiar pastime in my college days 50 plus years ago, and now in my mid seventies, i am rediscovering the lost pleasures….missing a favourite…’mathematical games’ …but its a great pastime…thanks and kudos to all who are continuing the great work !.Version: 4.4

Excellent news source, great applicationEverything is well done. Easy to use, solid to read..Version: 1.0.4

New Scientist app is patheticI'm tired of having to call to find out why the app isn't working. After being a subscriber for decades and having a house full of old issues I thought the app would save space and reduce clutter but I find myself running to the store to not avoid waiting until Monday to fix the problem. Please get your act together..Version: 2.0.2

Love the contentI’ve enjoyed the stories on NewScientist for a while now and decided to subscribe. Unfortunately it’s been a nightmare trying to activate my account..Version: 4.4

GreatI love it. I think it's the best magazine and app there is..Version: 2.0.2

It always gets worseIt seems evert new release/update of an app is less comprehensive than the previous. This is true of most software. Why can you not, just leave it alone. just.Version: 2.0.2

Stay on top of the latest science newsNew Scientist is a trustworthy source of the newest scientific developments. Well-written prose condenses sometimes challenging scientific and technical information from a wide variety of fields into understandable articles..Version: 2.6.1

App makes it hard to finish reading an articleIf you are half way through an article or issue and want to return to reading it at a later point, the app kicks you out and you have to hunt for where you left off. Otherwise the app works ok.Version: 2.6.1

Easy to read but would prefer to listenI have a couple of apps for weekly publications. One of them includes and audio version which I can listen to on the move. This app would definitely benefit from a similar functionality..Version: 2.5.0

UGH!!!!!Worked for about two days, now the app does not allow me to access. Credentials work online, but not via app. Very frustrating..Version: 2.2.0

Excellent - effortless, enjoyable, worth itThis is my new go-to reading app - so easy to use, read and the content is always strong. Love that I have access to back issues so right now I have endless supply of reading on the go..Version: 2.2.0

Good app but links lead to partial articlesIt’s a Love this magazine and although I have subscribed to a plethora of magazines in my life this is the only one I have kept. Every time it would expire I would find myself perturbed when it wasn't in the mail box. And with the app, I can read it on my phone so the kids can page through the hard copy. I was always asking them, "where's the new scientist" and would have to dig it out of their room, or search the car, now I don't have to..Version: 2.6.1

Great appGreat app.Version: 1.0.4

New scienceI love the variety of topics as well as the fact that the articles are readable by most people.Version: 2.6.1

Good but not greatIt still feels like a byproduct of the print edition. Not a lot of effort into extra features. But very readable and reliable. And delivery is more timely than with print..Version: 2.0.2

Ban Banner Ads for Paid SubscriptionNew Scientist (a great magazine by the way) I now places banner ads (driven through Google) at the bottom of every article page with the latest app update even on a fully paid subscription. No option to pay an additional amount for removal of these banner ads. This isn’t ethical as the ads also appear on all prior paid subscriptions when no ads appeared before. These prior magazine issues were stored on my iPhone (or so I thought). These prior subscriptions were paid at a higher rate then than now so how is it the ads can now be placed on my prior paid subscriptions where they didn’t appear. I suggest that New Scientist decision makers rethink their monitizing policy change. Otherwise it is hasta la vista. Update as of 3NOV2019 Happy to say that the banner ads don’t appear any more for paid subscriptions. Excellent magazine as I did acknowledge earlier and still is..Version: 2.6.1

Outstanding Science JournalismI am enjoying my subscription to the magazine. The articles are well-written and informative. The explanations provided in diagrams and side bars are done well too. I do have several requests. Please consider providing a highlighting feature in a future version of the application, and request the ability to view the pages as they appear in the original text version of the magazine. Thank you..Version: 2.5.0

New Update Fixes AllThe app now remembers where you are in an article so you can seamlessly pick it back up! Upgraded to 5 stars. Best impartial science journalism around and now with a modern functional app..Version: 2.7.0

Sharing New Scientist Articles DisabledUnfortunately the iTunes version of New Scientist does not allow us to share articles via email, even to yourself! Best to get New Scientist directly from them..Version: 1.0.5

Great content, service not so muchI very much enjoy reading NS. Unfortunately, I keep paying for my subscription and they keep sending me cancellation notices for nonpayment. I then write NS and they say everything is good, until I get the next cancellation notice. Ugh..Version: 2.8.1

New Scientist is my New AddictionLove this magazine! Having it so accessible is causing me to be informed of so many amazing science news stories. It’s hard to put down when you can look at previous articles so readily, it’s become a learning addiction. Thanks!.Version: 2.6.1

InformativeI was looking for something that was informative across many science disciplines, yet easily consumable by article. New Scientist hits this 'spot on'. If you want a deep dive, you'll have to subscribe to a journal or research reports in your discipline, but I love NS because I can learn enough in many disciplines to know what is emerging across many fields without a huge effort. Thank you NS!.Version: 1.0.5

Such a good publicationI love the New Scientist magazine and the app is great. Unlike many other publications where the associated app has some articles of the original, the New Scientist app is identical to the magazine. Well worth the investment..Version: 1.0.5

Good magazine interfaceWorks as you expect a magazine to work. I wish I could share whole articles instead of links but that is not unique to this magazine..Version: 1.0.5

So much better than ZinioI love it when a company takes the trouble to build an app that customizes the experience of their readers. This is exactly what New Scientist has done. The Zinio app was buggy, clunky so I was ultra pleased when this came out..Version: 1.0.5

I bought a new iPad but I can’t read the magazine anymoreWarning - do not use this app. It says I don’t need a log in, because I bought my year to year subscription thru the iTunes Store - but guess what? The app asks me for a log in anyway. (Which doesn’t exists, because I bought the app thru the apple. What horrible junk....Version: 2.2.0

Important news missed by the mainstream pressReading New Scientist has caused me to change my behavior to stay safer, healthier and to do more personally to help the environment. The Covid information was invaluable, such as learning early on that it spreads in aerosols rather than just droplets..Version: 4.1

Simple and intuitiveNew Scientist has amazing stories and the simple and intuitive interface is perfect..Version: 1.0.5

Just fascinatingI was never any good at science at school - maybe it was the presentation? But I just love New Scientist. It’s ideal for picking up when you have a random 10 minutes, or sometimes I binge read several issues. The quirky British humor of the last couple of pages is worth it alone! It’s sort of the People Magazine in format, on a far more interesting level. Everyone who finds it at my house loves it. Totally worth the money..Version: 2.5.0

Love it!Great to have this at my fingertips for quick informative reads..Version: 1.0.5

Great when you’re away.So nice to still get access when I’m not home for the mail issue..Version: 2.8.0

Night time readingThere is no way I can find that allows me to get a black background, like was available in previous versions.Version: 4.0.0

Handy ScienceStill the best science magazine for appreciating what's going on in fields other than your own and now it's in the palm of my hand. Great stuff!.Version: 1.0.4

New Scientist aids in both character building and information retentionYou build character as you seek to remain calm while waiting impatiently for the next issue, and you improve your information retention skills as you work on remembering which articles you read yesterday and attempting to recall the central thesis of said articles! Love it! Keeps the grey matter churning,.Version: 2.5.0

ExceptionalThe choice of articles in content and quality arereally “bright” I enjoy them cery much indeed. Thank you!.Version: 4.4

AdvertisementsIf you are going to have ads please put them inline with the text as in the paper magazine. The google ads at the bottom of the page are most unwelcome. Are you going to make me pay more for an ad free version? I feel cheated that an “upgrade” has downgraded the app. The ads are still there - down one star.Version: 2.6.1

Best at what it doesConcise, clear, and interesting. The best feature is a link to the original paper. This publication is worth the time. It is written for busy people who want to keep up, but can’t spend hours reading. The graphics and overall presentation are on target for one who enjoys science and its rapid pace of change..Version: 2.3.0

EasyThis is a great app, easy to use and the content is saved on your device so you can view it off line. It will do its own housekeeping by automatically deleting old issues, or not, and you can easily browse through the older issues and download what interests you..Version: 2.5.0

Good appGood magazine.Version: 2.0.2

Almost greatAs good as the print edition, however the links that go to other articles rarely (actually never) work. That interactivity and info networking would be the point to me of an online edition. However everything else works the way it should and its convenient, thus 4 stars..Version: 1.0.5

Excellent!Easy to use, easy to consult precedent issues, excellent app! Thumb up!.Version: 2.0.2

Understanding Scientific IdeasThis is real mind blowing scientific magazine! Read and try to understand what are the ideas. Your world will be changed soon!.Version: 2.3.0

ExcellentGreat magazine with an excellent app. Highly recommended..Version: 2.0.2

Amazing articles, app not perfectThe app is a bit hard to navigate/not very intuitive (I especially would love a "back" button). Also, there is SO MANY great articles that I would like a way to save all my favorite ones in one spot to find them easily again..Version: 2.5.0

Quick accurate and interestingI am a scientist and find many articles both in and outside of my field of expertise in NS. I reach for the app in my down time to inform me and to provide the references to understand the details of the journal articles that appear in the news items. I’m very happy to have NS as a resource to keep up with publications outside of my field of research..Version: 4.3

Content is great but the app sucks!I love New Scientist. Great content, excellent coverage of topics and well written. Too bad we have to put up with such lousy mobile app. Downloading to device is just one example of the poor design. You have to download one issue at a time and the silly app deletes your downloads mistakenly because of low memory! I have an IPhone with 512GB and only 10% full!.Version: 2.6.1

Enjoy my subscription, in-app browser lacks featuresReally enjoy the selection of informative, well-written articles. What bums me most is opening links in the in-app browser is a dead end; there's no option to open the page in Safari so I can save to read later instead of interrupting my flow..Version: 1.0.5

Good to readI love to read the content of the magazine provided. But one small thing I like to point it out for the app. Every time I open the app, it is jumping to the homepage but not the place I read before I recently quit. Is it possible that I can go to the place where I stopped? Thank you..Version: 2.6.1

Best news reporting everSuper duper magazine full of well written and illustrated stories about - not only science subjects - but much more. I’ve subscribed to New Scientist for 4 decades. I never tire of scanning the news and reading several articles in every issue. The accuracy is outstanding, the insights plentiful, and the humor, puzzles and games delightful. Best news magazine out there..Version: 2.8.1

Mind candy in a shiny wrapperA refreshing dose of objective reporting in a world of fake news factories..Version: 2.0.2

Always a pleasure to see a new issue.Really enjoy seeing the new issue cover. Graphically a joy. Yet the science is first rate, detailed and well written. Editing is tops. The coverage is comprehensive, meets you with coverage you didn’t realize you were looking for. For the informed lay science reader, this is the weekly summary of your world, bring you the best of the moment as it is unfolding..Version: 4.0.5

Best content meh appI've been reading ns for a few decades. Went all digital for a few years but now am back to paper web and app. Great content. The app is frequently frustrating..Version: 2.0.2

Excellent... Much better than ZinioApp does all I want... Of course it's a great magazine. Much nicer than working with Zinio..Version: 1.0.4

AWSOMEI have been reading this magazine since 2005, where I came across this from my boss. I have been reading them since then through my library when I retired from work when they offered it through RBDIGITAL which has now stopped their magazines but Libby and Overdrive have taken over. With all the current state of the world at this time, I trust them as a good source of their topics covered in the magazine and their other outlets. From what I have been reading and do follow up on the items I like They are NOT FAKE NEWS as other in the media..Version: 3.0.4

AlpineI’m totally in love with this app! As it helps me to upgrade my space of knowledge especially while it’s the period to doing my IELTS exam! Because this app has variety sections which gives me a general idea of taking over IELTS reading and writing task2, well done for the stunning job NEW SCIENTIST..Version: 4.2

From 4.5 stars to 4.2I read 90% of each issue, all on my iPod, none on my iPad. THE GREAT: choice of 3 font sizes; continuous scrolling (like Safari Reader); text can be selected and then searched on the web (choose 'define'); can be used horizontally or vertically (all 4 directions); great navigation tools; easy flip to the next article; pictures, tables and videos can be zoomed in or out with a tap; and there are built in links to the web. THE DISAPPOINTING: The new feature lets you save individual articles but you can't add text or high light text. Each iOS device has its own list. If you restore your device and reinstall from a backup the saved articles are gone. The serif font can be enlarged, but not the much smaller San-serif font used in side bars. With progressive lens it much easier to read narrow columns which are not available on the tablet. When you accidentally switch articles while scrolling and go back you are sent back to the top of the article. Downloading issues and deleting them was very well designed in the first version, this version is mildly annoying. To change text size you must close the issue. To delete a downloaded issue you must open it. Silly interface changes. This last version has no improvements...just removed good features..Version: 2.0.2
