Nihongo - Japanese Dictionary for Positive User Reviews

I love the pro versionAn excellent free dictionary, but the upgrades are totally worth the price to jump into. I love taking pictures and adding to a deck. I’ve been using pics to create my own flash cards. The testing is fun too. It’s also nice having a backup, in case you don’t have asset to the internet..Version: 1.24.1

Learn stroke order and see example sentences! This app is a great resource when I want to quickly look up and practice the stroke order of a particular kanji. I like the examples they provide as well as conjugation. Highly recommended !.Version: 1.22

Best App for Studying Japanese!!!Hands down the best tool I have found for use as a companion to my Japanese studies. I’ve been able to increase vocabulary and improve my reading skills tremendously through daily use of this app. Taking a photo of Japanese text, using Google translate to turn image into text, then importing that text into a clipping is a very powerful way to improve reading and vocabulary. The words in the clipping are also then automatically compiled into flash cards for study. Wow, easily worth the cost given the increased productivity in learning Nihongo!!!.Version: 1.11.2

Strong Learning ToolCritically important daily tool. Nothing better..Version: 1.29.7

Excellent Learning CompanionI have been using this app for years now and it’s my favourite Japanese dictionary. The developer has added many new features, and even emailed to let me know a feature I had requested years earlier had been implemented..Version: 1.21.1

Absolutely the bestI have tried all Japanese-English dictionaries and this one is stellar, dazzling, clearly the best. The examples it provides are numerous and useful, with wonderfully clear voices that pronounce every word. The flash cards are a blessing, great to review. I am in awe of this app and most grateful to its creators..Version: 1.12.1

Fantastic appWith a great dev who responds to suggestion and queries.Version: 1.19.5

Great new functionsI really like this new handed writing functions it makes search very convenient and efficient.Version: 1.28.2

Just what I neededI’m still in the basics but this dictionary is very helpful. I’m learning more vocabulary and kanji every day as well as grammar. Soon I will find Japanese friends on a app so I can help them with English and they can help me with Japanese. There must always be a balance in any relationship where the other person has something just as valuable to offer that way there is always harmony. I’m not a English professor and my English grammar isn’t the strongest but my goal is to help someone become fluent in English while I become fluent in Japanese..Version: 1.28.2

Super helpfulI never write reviews on things, but as someone who’s learning Japanese this is the best app I’ve used like..ever. Not only does it teach you definitions of words, but also shows you the stroke order for the kanji, plus, it’s free, for the most part.Version: 1.28.7

Invaluable Japanese learning app!Absolutely invaluable learning tool for anyone studying or interested in Japanese. Really amazing features that I use literally everyday. I’d recommend this as the best dictionary/study combination app around, and I’ve used a lot over the last 10 years!.Version: 1.27.2

好き!Very helpful!.Version: 1.20.2

Great appMust have for people learning Japanese. Flash cards are super useful..Version: 1.16.3

すごいねLe plus utile des dictionnaires jusqu’à présent。.Version: 1.26.2

Excellent app!I didn’t expect it to be this good! You get sentence examples, common readings, vocabulary, a radical keyboard, stroke order, JLPT classification, and if you pay (nice affordable prices also) you can get flashcards, audio, quizzes and much more. Responsive and easy to use. It also tells you if a word is used in daily language or not. If you have an iPad, you can split the screen. Very underrated app. It would be nice if you could search for a kanji using handwriting though. 😁.Version: 1.22.7

Awesome app, by far my favouriteI discovered this app a few days ago after years of ploughing along with others like iknow and kanji Senpai. While they were very useful to practice the basic vocabulary, I now know over 4000 words and with these older apps I just couldn't make much progress because there was no easy way to customise the new words to practice. In contrast, this app is already extremely helpful and I hope it will continue to be improved, e.g. to include stats on words learnt so far. I cut-and-paste clippings from news sites and from the NHK Easy News app and it's much easier to learn new words in context and stay motivated. The interface is simple but as you use the app you discover lots of features that are user friendly. Very promising. Update: been using it every day for a couple months, I love it. I'm impressed with how responsive it remains now that I loaded it with hundreds of clippings. My favourite app..Version: 1.9.1

Developers that careThis multi functional dictionary app is extremely helpful and well worth it for me to support the developer, they are continually working on updates for quality of life and quality of studying..Version: 1.30.7

Best Japanese dictionary in the App StoreHands down this is the best Japanese dictionary in the App Store. While learning Japanese I have downloaded my fair share of apps to aid in learning and this app has shone out as absolutely one of the best. What I have found particularly useful is knowing how common your search word is and being able to quickly look up verb conjugations. Having your looked up words become flash cards is also great for vocabulary consolidation as well. Look no further if you’re studying Japanese and need a good dictionary!.Version: 1.26.4

Very useful language appEasily the best free language app I’ve used. Even the free version offers comprehensive functionality..Version: 1.29.10

Go over kanji you've already learnt pls?Love this app! My go-to flashcard app! However, I would like it better if you could reorder flashcards, and go over words you've already learnt that day. For example, if I learn 10 new kanji a day, I would like to review them in 1 hour, 2 hour, etc, instead of waiting for them to come up in my 'review' the next day. I know you can practise your deck, but since you cannot shuffle the deck, that's not very helpful when you have hundreds of words. I found the pre-installed kanji decks a bit useless but other than that, I really like it!.Version: 1.8.4

ExcellentThis is literally the best app out there for dictionary use with Flashcards and reminders. Helped me through studying my Japanese. Thank you!.Version: 1.15.2

Fantastic all-round Japanese appThis is by far the best Japanese language app I’ve used. Unlike many other dictionaries, the example sentences are relevant and not some obscure text that is difficult to integrate with your studies. You can make, save and organise flashcard sets easily. You can import text, save and study any content within the app - or using the safari extension, online. There are pre-made kanji decks by JLPT or Japanese school year. And you can take photos of kanji and it will translate them. The depth of detail in the individual vocabulary entries is deep and, for about £8, you can add pitch accent patterns. The interface is intuitive and easy to use and navigate. I’ve paid up for a lifetime membership at a rate I think is a bargain. Thanks to the developer for producing such a brilliant app..Version: 1.27.2

Awesome! The clippings feature in this app is incredible. I've been using it to learn Japanese songs. I just dump the song lyrics into the clippings section, learn the words from the generated flash cards and then double check myself back in the clippings. It removes the need of copying and pasting each word into a dictionary or Google Translate..Version: 1.0.1

Very nice appThis app may or may not be the right fit for you, but it is obvious that a lot of effort and love was poured into the app. Personally, I’m a big fan of the app’s flashcards. It’s easy to do flashcard shovelware. This is not that..Version: 1.30.7

Best Japanese Dictionary for iOSI have tested out dozens of Japanese dictionaries over the years (I write about independent language learning) and Nihongo is by far the best option for iOS yet. The developer has really thought things through and has integrated so many thoughtful features sorely lacking in competing apps. I especially like the ability to add photos to definitions/flashcards, the prominent display of “common”/“rare” next to terms, the furigana extension for webpages, and the auto-creation of flashcards based on words you’ve looked up..Version: 1.15.1

Great, but some suggestions..I love this app. I’ve been using it for a while to store my heard words and use them to make sentences for anki decks. What I wished was available as a feature is searching words by frequency. For example, having a section for common words, a section for uncommon, a section for rare etc Also, it would be nice to be able to browse the JLPT words at once by category without having to learn through the integrated in app SRS. For example all N4 words would be in a list to see what you’ll be studying..Version: 1.28.4

Best I've usedThere is no dictionary as useful as this one. I can't tell you just how often I've referred to it in the last couple of years. I love the easy-to-use interface, the sample sentences, and the ability to listen to pronunciation..Version: 1.17.1

To tightEnglish translation could be improved.Version: 1.30.8

Excellent appVery easy to use, very comprehensive. It sure beats looking up in Kanji in Nelson's dictionary.... I think it’s great. Update months later: it’s still a great app!! Five stars..Version: 1.26.4

Best offline app and kanji lookupThis app is super useful for studying on a plane or where cell signal is bad. It also has the best kanji lookup function I have found..Version: 1.30.7

This is my go-to dictionaryI use google translate as well, but this app seems to find the correct meaning better than even google translate. I like that I can search either English or romaji terms in the same search box. My only regret is that I did not buy this app when it was less expensive. I have the lite version and find the pricing to be too expensive for pro..Version: 1.10.5

Best app for Japanese vocabularyWhen I first purchased I was a bit skeptical on whether the one-time full purchase was worth it, but this app is definitely one of the best when it comes to Japanese vocabulary. It has a clean UI, it’s easy to use, and has extremely helpful writing/flashcard sections that truly drill memorization. The developer, Chris, is also extremely responsive to feedback and is clearly passionate about improving and maintaining the quality of the app. Highly recommend purchasing if you’re serious about learning Japanese. It’s such a quick and easy to use resource; having it on hand at all times for refreshers, vocabulary drills, or dictionary lookups is truly worth it..Version: 1.26

One of the best but not perfectOne of its key strengths is the UI. Example sentences are plentiful. You can even upload pictures to words! I’ve been studying Japanese for 3 years now and this app never leaves me. There’s one thing that is missing: desktop support. A MAC app or browser support would complete the package. One feature I’d like to see is keyboard support for inputting answers for flash cards. I find it more effective than simply flipping the flash cards over. Also be sure to backup your data. I had to re-download this app once and lost all my data! iCloud did not save me..Version: 1.17.1

Hope to improve back up functionI like this app very much, which can well collect my own Japanese learning materials. However, the backup function seems to have some problems. Why I cannot backup my data to iCloud or Google drive? Everytime I tried, it finally failed. Also, hope developers can develop Mac version. I prefer to use my laptop to import studying materials, and computer keyboard typing would be more efficient and convenient than keyboard on phones....Version: 1.17.1

Really nice app!Really nice interface, available offline (which is super helpful) and has really useful information like common/uncommon next the words which I think distinguish it well from other Japanese dictionary apps.Version: 1.25.1

YES!I almost never write reviews. I am so satisfied with this app that I just had to though. I have been studying Japanese on and off for approximately 6 months and I got this app 2 weeks ago. The app has been a Segway for consistent study time for me. I recommend making the lifetime purchase of this app if you are serious about learning Japanese..Version: 1.13.3

Excellent, but there is a room for improvementThe app is excellent, I think a stroke order diagram during the writing practice will be helpful..Version: 1.14

Nice App-PriceyThis is a neat app with lots of features like flashcards, example sentences, and stroke order. However, it's very pricey and there are many other apps with almost the same features that are free. Shirabe Jisho, for example, is almost the same app and it even uses the same example sentences. Shirabe Jisho has added flashcards for different JLPT and grade level kanji. For now, I will save my $50 for the lifetime subscription..Version: 1.24.1

The Best 日本語の辞書アプリThis is the beat Japanese Dictionary. The app is good that I’m even thinking of august suing 50 for the line time option. I might just do it to. This is an app which will be extremely useful for anyone that’s a at a stage of formulating sentences in Japanese and wants to begin learning kanji. For each word there are so many sentence examples. Plus you can search for particles, kanji symbols too where they even highlight all their different readings and then link it to words where it is found. Well done to the creators!.Version: 1.24.1

Still a great AppI have been using this dictionary for years and it’s only gotten better so far. On top of the offline compatibility, flash cards and wealth of information available, more has been added that is a welcome addition. These include stroke order animations for Kanji, a kanji scanner through the camera, and even just playing audio of the word when seeing it on a flash card. These additions only reaffirm to me that this is the best Japanese dictionary bar none. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to better their Japanese proficiency..Version: 1.26.3

Fantastic and essentialI’ve tried many Japanese apps and I’ve found this to be incredibly useful and has some unique helpful features, e.g. the “contained words” feature which helps breakdown compound kanji. The subtle kanji practice feature when I discovered was an unexpected delight and is fantastic. The clippings and translate feature is great. The developer cares and listens. I requested a font size adjustment feature in translation and it was delivered, and it’s very useful. Can’t recommend this app high enough. For serious students, absolutely worth every penny. Update: in future, would be great if it had handwriting support for input also..Version: 1.25

The best Japanese learning toolI love being able to study kanji by school grade and JLPT level. I really like that the app tests you on stroke order as well. Also, being able to add furigana and word definitions to web pages is such a great experience. This app is hands down the best Japanese learning tool that I have and I highly recommend it to all learners. The app is always getting updates/upgrades and is well worth the money spent!.Version: 1.25.3

Excellent dictionary! So far, this has been the dictionary I use the most..Version: 1.30.8

QualityWorks in a snappy manner, intuitive to use. Responsive developer. The Safari furigana feature blew my mind, though it can’t always nab every kanji. I have an idea to make Nihongo even more “THE” Japanese dictionary app, unless it is there already and I don’t see it. A conjugation list (present, negative, past, negative past, te, masu, potential passive, causative, conditional, volitional, imperative). I may return to this review and add more when I use the app even more..Version: 1.12.1

If I could give this 6 stars I wouldEssential for any Japanese language learner! You can literally screenshot a page of Japanese text, and every single kanji or word will be highlighted that leads you to a definition of that word, automatic stroke order animation, and a hundred other things I haven’t even begun to explore yet. Best part? The Lifetime Pro membership is $50 FOR LIFE. Thank you to whoever made this app. I want to be you when I grow up..Version: 1.24.1

The bestI bought the full version last year when I went to Japan the first time. I was already fluent in Mandarin Chinese as a second language, so I had some learning techniques that transferred well from using Pleco to this app. The design is great, pitch accents are included, lots of human voice recordings for words. I love it. The furigana Safari extension is awesome! I’ve never seen anything like that on mobile for Chinese. It’s so incredibly helpful. The full version is worth every penny! Things I’m excited for: Pitch accent markers in the search results list for quick reminders. Pitch accent markers in generated flash cards. Being able to search for a sentence or phrase in the regular dictionary lookup tab (without adding it to clippings)..Version: 1.30.9

Super usefulLoved the option to upgrade for pronunciations, sentence examples are very helpful to figure out how one might actually use a word instead of just associating it with its “direct” English translation, but my favorite part is seeing how common a word is..Version: 1.19.4

Worth the investmentWell worth putting your time and money into this app. If you’re looking to learn Japanese, this is the app for you!.Version: 1.30.9

I never write reviews but this app deserves oneThis app is amazing, it is a life saver and it alone has skyrocket my learning. It is the one greatest tool in my learning that I have used and will continue to use..Version: 1.10.7

Great dictionaryRobust. Great experience..Version: 1.10.5

Brilliantとてもいいですね。多分一番いい辞書です。iPadの中に、五辞書があります。この辞書は便利です。皆さん頑張ってください。.Version: 1.28.6

Brilliant app! Perfect for learning JapaneseAs a senior high school student studying Japanese, I can say that this app has already significantly enhanced my learning after just a few hours of exploring and using the app. With it’s refined interface, all the important functions (e.g. radical keyboard) are easy to access and navigate. I also appreciate the example sentences listed under each dictionary search- which cover all the variants of a word.(e.g. plain form, polite form, て form) And yes- the dictionary search works offline too. I’m greatly impressed with the many useful features incorporated in this app- notably the flash card and spoken text features. I’m now considering saving up to purchase a lifetime Pro subscription! Nihongo covers all the bases- I’ve gone ahead and deleted all of my other Japanese dictionary/education apps- even ones I have relied on for years up until now. I would strongly recommend Nihongo for those aiming to expand their vocab; preparing for a trip to Japan; or to simply brush up on old knowledge; students and teachers alike!.Version: 1.16.3

Excellent Dictionary!Very clean and easy to use with plenty of sentence examples. I like how it also tells you if a word is common, uncommon, etc. helps me focus on the words I'll encounter more often. One thing I wish to see is the conjugations of verbs, plain, te form, masu, imperative, potential, causative, etc..Version: 1.9.2

Most useful dictionary app so far! But...I love this dictionary. The flash cards are easier to use than any other dictionary I’ve come across, and I adore the clippings section. However, I’ve run into a few bugs. For example, whenever I go to type in the clippings or flash cards it scrolls all the way down to the bottom and I can’t see what I’m typing, which is kind of necessary going from Japanese to English. If this could be fixed I would be thrilled 😁.Version: 1.10.4

New problemsApp was great until recently and now it freezes often when you try to press on a kanji. iPhone XR. Now there are also major font size problems as well. Unusable at the present time..Version: 1.16.2

Incredible appBlown away by the app!.Version: 1.12.1

InvaluableAbsolutely great app for vocabulary retention. Hearing each word pronounced while doing flash cards is so important for my learning process, and being able to use the dictionary to create flash cards and customize which meaning(s) show up for studying is great. I decided I prefer studying the cards on the app due to the audio, but it’s great that you can import decks to Anki as well. I haven’t made much use of the kanji dictionary or kana/translation services yet, but they seem really effective from just playing around with them. Highly recommend for anyone learning Japanese. Totally worth the price..Version: 1.29.4

Excellent product.Well worth the price..Version: 1.15.2

FINALLY! Handwriting!I’ve been waiting a very long time for this app to have handwriting included. There are so many times when I’m in a situation and I love using this app, but using the radical look up just takes too much time, and I have to use another app. Now I can read magazines and play video games without having to separate my flashcards from my look up app!.Version: 1.28.2

Pretty great, a little room for improvementThis app is a nice wrapper for Jim Breen’s JE dictionary. Has better hyperlinking between relevant definitions than most dictionaries. The “Contained Words” are wrong sometimes, but for the most part are pretty useful when looking up words contained in things like compound verbs. Could use some stroke order diagrams..Version: 1.11.2

The Perfect AppThis is the best app I have ever used in my life. Have tried other OCR apps to use on manga and they are complicated to use/don’t work well. I love how I can just click on any word and with a tap of a button able to the add the image so I can see where that vocabulary word is coming from/get context. It’s also easy to transfer decks from iPhone to iPad if you are unable to sync. Press share and then email it to yourself as if you click on export it’s in a format only Anki can read. You can even reorder vocabulary so if you accidentally deleted a word just re add it back it and click on the i button by the deck name. I’ve never happy I got the lifetime while it was 50% off. Worth every penny..Version: 1.28.7

Brilliant and simple. Most helpful.Fantastic app to study Japanese! I use it everyday and I’m grateful every time..Version: 1.26.4

Is very very goodI love it. Is very useful. A lot of features. Thank you for this app.Version: 1.19.5

Pretty great!Love the links to other words in example sentences, “elements” that make up kanji, and the new search-as-you-type functionality. Subscriptions and a lofty lifetime purchase are a bit of a miss, for me, but I suppose that’s where everyone is headed. For the type of functionality a dictionary provides, it’s a tough sell, but to each their own. Would love to see an “identify the kanji by drawing” feature like Shirabe offers, and explanations/links for the various verb conjugation forms..Version: 1.27.2

Easy to use and great context sentencesWhen I look up meanings of kanji or phrases, I get absorbed by the great variety of context sentences. They are varied interesting and I get to completely understand the nuances of whatever Word or phrase I was looking up. I had thought of buying Kenkyusha’s new Japanese English Dictionary, but don’t need it after all!.Version: 1.28.7

Best Japanese learning appThis is the best Japanese learning tool I know of. The dictionary is great. But if you only use it as a dictionary, then you’re badly underestimating the power of this tool. With the clipping analysis and safari extension, this is a self contained learning platform, where you can read, learn new words, and review them by flash cards later on. It’s worth upgrading to pro version. One thing needs to be improved is to add a sync feature. It would be good to be able to sync clippings and word decks across iPhone and iPad..Version: 1.9.5

Do not pay $50 for this app!!Really really great app that was completely worth the pro in app purchase when it was under $20. Be aware that all these old 5 star reviews don't reflect the new price gouging strategy. Do yourself a favor and download Midori and Japanese by Renzo. Great App! Reasonably priced with similar functionality though not as convenient..Version: 1.29.6

Amazing DictionaryThis is an incredibly useful tool for learning Japanese. A must have app in my opinion..Version: 1.25

FantasticWould be even better with similar flash card exercises for grammar (or fill in the blank?). Still by far the best app for learning Japanese that I have come across..Version: 1.3.2

RatingBest Japanese app.Version: 1.28.2

The Best Japanese Dictionary AppThis is hands down the best Japanese dictionary app on the app store. The free version already comes with many great features such as animated kanji stroke order, tons of example sentences, and conjugation charts for each word, but the paid version takes it to a whole new level, and it’s reasonably priced too. The paid version allows you to take photos of japanese text and paste them into the app, which will then highlight words in the text for you to click on and it will give you their meaning. You can then click on them again to go to their dictionary entry for more information. This feature alone has made my japanese learning experience so much easier and faster. Even better, premium allows you to turn any dictionary entry into a flashcard with the click of a single button, so you don’t have to spend hours writing your own flashcards. Premium also comes with a timed-repetition based review system for your flashcards, similar to Anki, where cards you’re less familiar with are reviewed more frequently, but as you get better at each word they show up less and less. This ensures your flashcard practice is used efficiently by targeting words you’re less familiar with. Premium also comes with the ability to add furigana and clickable dictionary entries to japanese safari webpages. This makes reading practice online much easier. These are only a few of the great features this app has to offer, but there are many more. All in all, i couldn’t rate this app high enough, and if i could give it more than 5 stars i would. It’s also developed by just one guy and despite being a one person project, it is exceptionally well put together. It is the highest of professional quality and you can feel the love and passion he puts into the app, which is why i decided to support him by purchasing the life-time subscription for $50, and it has been well worth it. To end, this app is amazing, if you’re serious about learning Japanese, this is an essential purchase..Version: 1.26.4

Great!Offline dictionary worked great in Japan! Came home to discover flash cards and clippings, too. Definitely a great app!.Version: 1.15.1

Great Flash CardsI really like using this app. It has great organized flashcards as well as a dictionary all in one and I find all its features to be super useful. I think the flashcards are great because they include writing flashcards also, which is super helpful. The only thing I wish this app had was notifications or something because I always forget until nighttime to do them..Version: 1.27.1

Outstanding!!!For the serious student of Japanese, this app would be good at almost any price. Far more than a dictionary, it deserves the highest recommendation. Many thanks to the developer..Version: 1.13.3

Beautifully designed and incredibly feature-richI've been happily using Imiwa? for nearly 10 years, but Nihongo really takes the cake. It's obvious a lot of thought was put into the design. Not only is it beautiful, but packs an incredible number of features into a simple and intuitive design. The ability to add furigana or romaji to any webpage is fantastic. Being able to see example sentences and tapping through to the entries for words you don't know is awesome. This is my new go-to Japanese dictionary..Version: 1.22.7

Time saverDon’t stop this app is awesome !! It took me forever to find an app with all these features. I’m busy so making y own clashcards is hard.. Quizlet has great learning tools but is time consuming for Vocab. The flash card system is pretty good may need some tweaking as time goes on to ensure older cards get adaquit review but compared to giants like Quizlet who have masted it this app does well. Anyone complaining about the ,only is just cheep this person obviously puts a lot of work and deserves to be compensated..Version: 1.28.6

Great app, with one big issue ...The volume level seems to be preset, and there seems to be nothing I can do to make it louder. Please fix this!.Version: 1.20.2
