Uberchord | Guitar Learning for Negative User Reviews

Frustratingly badYou can’t back out of anything if you’re accidentally tap it. (There’s no back button or X button). You can’t look at anything without physically playing it on your guitar. (It will yell at you that it can’t hear you.) Update: Reply to the offensive Developer Reply: There is no pause button. Perhaps that’s a bug. But in general, the UI and UX are still pretty bad. I used it with my guitar yesterday, or attempted to. The note recognition is quite cool, but the UX is the worst of any app I’ve used. I’m a certified music teacher, have used thousands of apps, (over 370 on my phone right now) and I’d never recommend this to a student if I can’t even make it work myself..Version: 2.9.3

Can’t get passed G.Won’t let me go passed G, keeps telling me not to finger strings I’m not even on. Won’t be buying the paid version!.Version: 2.7.6

No support option available, says your not playing the chord correctly even when you areThis app has a decent tutorial to get you started and convince you to spend your money, but a horrible mic for reading chords. I thought it was just me being the beginner that I am playing the notes wrong even though I am following the exact instructions on how to play a chord. Turns out my frustrations were real. I had a music teacher come over so i showed him the app. He had similar difficulties (not as bad as me I’ll admit), but when you play a chord the app doesn’t read it properly. This can leave you stuck on a particular level and frustrate you out of your mind. I am now out of the two week period to get my money back and I just learned that it’s not me, it’s the app. Anyway, still not sure how I would contact support as there is no option in the app. Maybe this review will entice them to make it easily available or at the very least to contact me. I would not recommend this app to any beginning to learn guitar.Version: 2.9.1

Great idea but flawed executionI really like the idea of getting feedback on chords and rhythms while playing. However, The app does not always recognize when something is being played correctly. It gets stuck on repeatedly showing the same cord, and indicating a mistake. It is quite frustrating! I plan to try it a couple of more days to see if the app learns. Otherwise, it will be unusable..Version: 2.9.8

Not a easy to use appVery clunky to use. It’s like playing a computer game and you’re forced to sit through the start videos that have nothing to do with the game and only the lame story line. Getting into the app, right after the clunky starting with it. You’re thrusted into paying for the app. No warm welcome at all. That’s just how I feel with it..Version: 2.9.15

DisappointingI had high expectations but the app does not even hear my guitar correctly. I can play a chord correct and it will make me play it over and over again cause it thinks it’s wrong. Or it will tell me to stop playing a note on one string when I’m not even touching that string. The exercises are lame and it is not applicable to real songs. Maybe if you get further up you will start to learn more but there are better apps out there than this..Version: 2.6.10

No left handed supportAs there is no lefthand guitarist support I will not be buying.Version: 2.7.4

Terrible appAfter spending 10 minutes trying to get the app to here my guitar the app then untuned it and told me i was playing wrong i then got my brother who is a guitar lesson instructor to try and even he was doing it "wrong".Version: 2.3.2

Trash and a RIPOFFEven if you PAY, this stupid app won’t allow you to take the lessons you want, if you don’t earn enough “picks” first. The developer will give some bs response about learning in order - but a paying customer should be able to access ANY lesson they choose. It’s not YOUR call on what I am “ Ready” to learn! Save your money and get a real teacher. UPDATE - even if you pay 89 bucks - it STILL wont give you access if you dont do it in order. This is outright fraud..Version: 2.8.1

TOO MANY DRAWBACKSWhen you launch an app. and charge for it, it is not unreasonable for a buyer to expect a product that is well through its development stage. I do not expect to be a development tool, I expect a finished product that is not being constantly updated, other than for the inevitable coding bugs. Is this why large discounts are now being offered? I have struggled with the app. since last June, using an IPad Pro with IOS 11.2.5. The program content keeps changing with no index giving a consistent link to what has gone before and how that fits in with the new additional portions of tutorial. And to cap it all, the Apogee Jam input I bought to use with the app. no longer works, although it is compatible with GuitarTuna and Tonebridge. I have spend more time frustrated by the foibles of this software than using it. Enough, this is a complete and expensive waste of money. At least with Secret Guitar Teacher, my now tutorial app., there is some resemblance of tutorial communication, not just unexplained bar charts etc..Version: 2.6.6

Erm..?So I downloaded this app, hoping to improve on my guitar skills. So there I was, all excited, getting my guitar and pick out and telling my household to be quiet. I turn on the app. I currently have a Classical Spanish guitar. It tells me to play the low E string, and hang on a sec? I am playing low E, clearly, there is nothing muffling the microphone yet it is convinced that i am playing a D string. So, thinking I just slightly confused the app, I tap skip intro - I have enough knowledge of how to read tabs and chords etc. So i select 'The Am chord' lesson, ready to breeze through it. I play Am. several (what feels like) thousand times, and low and behold, it is convinced that I have got 5 wrong fingers on the fretboard. This is the point I gave up, and came onto the app store to rant about my experience. Instead of this app, I would recommend Yousician for those wanting to learn Guitar for free. First time that I've ever been disappointed in an 'Editor's choice' app. Thanks for reading, have a good weekend..Version: 1.8.5

Amazing when it actually works.I have loved this app and almost thought it was too good to be true. Paid $70 for the year and now I can’t get through a single practice because the exercises refuse to pick up what I’m playing. I can play a perfectly tuned A chord and I’m setback or stuck for “not playing it right.” When it all works it’s amazing how it can really help push you. Right now I just want my money back because I’m “playing wrong” apparently. Using an 12 pro Max. No mic issues..Version: 2.9.9

Not all it's made out to be!The app is supposed to 'listen' to you play and give real time feedback. That's only true for playing one chord at a time. As soon as you play a strum or a song then it does not 'listen' and as long as you make a noise it will give you 90%+. It's a great way to look like you're learning but all as you are doing is picking up poor habits and hitting high scores on a game app. If can also be inconsistent in adjusting speed/progress between exercises but you could get over this if it did what it says on the tin. Song selections are limited and the first few were only choruses. Since the app doesn't actually 'listen' I guess it'd be too much to achieve a full song. Backing tracks are also a bit odd; it's the same keyboard sound on every track and it sounds like it's taken from a kids TV program. Rocksmith or Yousician are far bettter and work out much better value. Nice idea, nice visuals and interface but fails to do what it's supposed to! Update: the chord trainer works fine, as you know from our recent emails where you also admitted that It didn't perform when strumming/playing. It's therefore misleading if you to continue to market it as you do!.Version: 2.4.4

“Do not finger string”On the first chord it just kept saying “do not finger string” on strings that fingers weren’t on! Even if i just played the two string it said to put my fingers on, it would say “do not finger string” on the strings i didn’t play... useless..Version: 2.6.11

TrashThis app is actually trash. It doesn’t register sound correctly, it forces you to spend 30 minutes on tuning and it doesn’t say your using the right chord even if you are. It’s really annoying and crappy.Version: 2.9

Nice interface but poor performanceI really really want to like this product. The interface is beautiful and the mechanics are very nice and intuitive, optimized to be used in the small iPhone screen. However, the note recognition system appears to be lacking... I registered for the 7 day trial and was considering continuing to use the app later on but decided to cancel my subscription because of this. Often the app does not recognize the chord (believe me, I know it was impecable) and causes you to continue in the same level for ages... making the experience frustrating rather than fun. A side note is that this app should really have a proper iPad port... The app definitely has potential but feels incomplete. Specially given the price they ask for it. It is more expensive than Yousician which is a far more mature app. I look forward to try this app again in the future. I’m sure it will be among the best.Version: 2.6.11

Because you won’t stop askingLots of work left to be done. First and for most, why must you constantly ask me to write a review? Maybe ask once or twice, but no... you are relentless. Apparently you can’t pay and use this app without reviewing it. There is definitely some good stuff here , but it does not flow smoothly from one lesson to the next. I find that sometimes it jumps in skill level to fast and becomes frustrating to use , and causes me to “cheat” my way past some spots. Goes from decent chord change speed to “no way I can accomplish that at my skill level. The app has the ability to track my stats , thus giving it the opportunity to personalize my path through the lesson. Instead it is very generic, and disappointing. Will be canceling my subscription..Version: 2.7.6

Wont tuneNot very good wont tune correctly.Version: 1.8.5

A great start...But lots of work to doIt seems that although the basics are well on their way to being polished...There appears to be a push on content and not technical improvement. Now I've had uberchord for ages and after multiple updates, the tuner still isn't accurate, it doesn't always detect me playing on my electric guitar and when it does its too slow and makes out like I'm not in time when in fact it just didn't show I'd played the string when i did. It's quite frustrating actually. Now that's not to say I don't like the app...I think it has great potential but I won't be shelling out my hard earned cash until the audio detection is improved dramatically. My advice is don't purely use this to learn to play but use it as part of a toolset to learn. I'm not giving up with it but just being more lenient with it when using it :).Version: 2.5

ConfusingReally confusing.Version: 2.9.13

Ok but frustrating !The app picks up sound from the last chord you’ve played and you lose score because it thinks it’s the wrong chord. You touch the guitar and it makes any sound, the app picks that sound up and thinks you’ve made a mistake. The explanations on the lessons are minimal so for a beginner it just assumes you know what it means. Huge potential but small things are overlooked.Version: 2.9.12

RubbishDon't bother if you are a beginner. I started with an out of tune guitar. Followed the prompts with the app on my lap next to the guitar in a quiet house. Started the tuning process and 5 minutes later I've got a broken string. Small 1/4 turns and then retest. Not happy..Version: 1.7.1

DisappointedI read the reviews and the screenshots looked good. However it’s impossible to try the app out and look at the features without doing a bunch of beginner exercises to earn “picks” to unlock features like play along. Really painful in a paid app. Your gamification is really a blocker on so many levels. Unsubscribed and now uninstalling..Version: 2.9.12

Can't Detect Correct NotesI wouldn't pay to upgrade until the app can correctly detect notes. For the past 2 months I've tried using the app - it just sits there telling me to play a G - while I'm playing a G - nothing ever happens - just sits there. The tuner part of the app works but not the teaching part. Doesn't matter if I'm using an Acoustic or Electric the app just sits there. Have no problems with Yousician or Fender. All of my third party tuners detect just fine. So clearly Uberchord is the problem..Version: 2.6.3

Issues with the microphoneI've used 2 iPad minis (4th and 5th gen), 1 iPad Pro (2019) and an iPhone 11 Pro Max with the app. Using three different guitars and two different amps or no amp at all, the app consistently misidentifies notes played. I've been playing guitar for well over a year and have used the built-in tuner, a Boss tuner and Kliq clip on tuner, thinking that there was some issue with the tuning. The app's tuner is just not as precise as the others I use and wasn't sure if this contributed to its consistent misidentification of notes played. I've not found a combination that produces reliable results. The Eleanor Rigby lesson is a especially problematic with the E minor chord. Third fret G on the first string seems to ge reported a bunch for different chords. My acoustic with the pick up unused and electric guitars produce the same problem for the same notes. I have a PRS Silver Sky and a Gibson Les Paul traditional and whether I use my thumb nail, no nail or guitar pick, I cannot get the chord. Using the cleanest tone on the amp with no effects, changing volume, etc. don't seem to have any effect. The chord identification portion of the app is unreliable as well. There's probably a specific type of acoustic setup that works okay with the app and I'm not sure what it is and don't really care..Version: 2.9.2

TerriblePlaying the right note but it’s saying I’m putting fingers on strings that I’m not, you can’t skip if it’s you all ready know what to do and takes ages.Version: 2.7.4

Decent StartFirst day with the app: tuner works well and the exercises are good. I wish the instructions for each exercise were clearer, right now I kind of fumble through trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing with the timed ones. Also some of the time it doesn't correctly recognize my fingering and says I'm on the wrong fret when I'm not. Hopefully it'll get better as I get used to the app..Version: 2.1.1

Wrong detection iPhone 12 Pro MaxNot new to the guitar was hoping to find an app that could detect my guitar. It can’t recognize a couple to chords even though they are being played. Very frustrating experience..Version: 2.9.5

Can be super frustratingI have challenges where it won’t recognize the chords I am playing consistently and so it’s hard to get in a groove. Doubly frustrating when I am in a exercise that won’t let me advance under a certain level of performance - which causes me to get stuck in the exercise - like my chords are good and consistent but the app is only recognizing half of them. I’m playing an acoustic guitar, tune it up every time I sit down to play and practicing with an iPad Pro. Seems to be some sort of hardware or software problem, I’m not sure which one..Version: 2.9.3

Very badThe app mic fails to recognize chords correctly no matter how carefully I play each string. Particularly the G/D chord, possibly the easiest to play of all. Their doesn’t appear to be any Support, Help or FAQ to refer to. I’ve played guitar for years and was interested in a tutorial app to encourage me to start playing again. This is not it..Version: 2.9.3

Like having a real-world teacher. A terrible real-world teacher.Put simply: this is one of the most aggravating, annoying apps I’ve ever used. It doesn’t really you what you did wrong, and it wastes your time. Instead of taking the time to fix your mistakes during many of the “progress-bar” based lessons, it just takes progress away and screws you over, as a post to taking the time to help you play the freaking chord. It feels as though they were giving out they’re app for free, so they saved their own time, by having these problems. But you know what? It’s one of the only free guitar teaching apps that’s even the slightest bit good, so, many people come crawling back to this, and guess what! I probably will too, and get ticked off all over again. Pay for Yousician or something, unless you like this then good for you! You probably knew guitar previous, unlike Me, who thought this highly regarded app could teach how to play with causing so much annoyance. Try it, if you feel so inclined, but I don’t recommend it..Version: 2.6.13

Not badIt's not the worst!!😘.Version: 2.4.5

Premium content is still lockedHiding songs behind an a pseudo-XP meter is beyond frustrating for players who already possess moderate ability on the guitar. If I want to play a song, I SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PLAY IT ESPECIALLY WHEN I'M PAYING. EDIT: Thanks for the timely response devs. However, it's a little bit confusing since the most obvious thing I want to do is "play-along" which *IS* locked until you play the full song with 80% accuracy....Version: 2.9.1

Needs an accountYou need to create an account just to try it. App has been deleted..Version: 2.7

Deleted Uberchord after 3 minutesAfter the first time signing up, the first lesson is tuning. There is a tuner that uses a graphic of the strings and arrows show which direction, up or down, tighten or loosen the string and a moving tick line that indicates sharp or flat. The mic picks up the sound. The problem is the tuner does not wait until the string is tune accurately and skips to the next higher string. Something as basic as that should work flawlessly not just because they they put it right up front in your face the first time you use their app, but because it is a foreshadowing of problems to come. Now I will retune my guitar with my Korg, or Polytone. But I was interested in the app. Uberchord, needs to work the problem..Version: 2.9.3

Click baitIt can’t Recognize cord.Version: 2.9.11

Pestered into itFirst off, congratulations UC, you have gotten me to write this review. Each day the splash screen interrupting my lesson begging for reviews has annoyed me enough to hope that doing this will make it stop. (If it doesn't, I will cancel my subscription.) So, with that said. I think this is a pretty good app and the paid content is worthwhile. I haven't played guitar for 15 years and within a few weeks I have learned and play chords that I never thought possible even when I was at my most capable before. The note recognition is good (using an electric with connector), though I feel the lessons are too generous sometimes when I don't play a note correctly. This compounds on the strumming lessons where it gives you specific chords to play, but as long as you play anything at all you will pass. The warmup and practice sessions pull out material that is way more complicated than what the lessons I'm going through are offering. Occasionally, it's more difficult than I can play at the moment so I can't complete the exercise - which for a warm up is a pretty bad start to your practice time. However, I am pleased with the app and lessons, even taking account the quirks..Version: 2.5

Waste of timeYou’d be better off learning it by ear, you’ll spend the majority of the time closing ads. Don’t download..Version: 2.9.4
