What is ScatAbility? Description of ScatAbility 3218 chars
ScatAbility is a practice app for scat singing. It utilizes the simple method of listening and imitation to get you scatting quickly, and musically. The focus is on singing, not thinking, similar to the immersion process of learning a language. Knowledge of theory, jazz chord types, progressions and scales, though beneficial, are not required to use this product.
ScatAbility is easy to use: sing exercises, call & response and etudes with great jazz singers including Darmon Meader, Rosana Eckert, Greg Jasperse, Kate Reid, Justin Binek, Michele Weir, John Proulx, and more to be added soon. Mute the vocals to practice on your own with the backing tracks, and when ready, record yourself, listen back, then export for other uses!
ScatAbility's creator, Michele Weir (MichMusic) is a renowned teacher who has powerfully influenced the development of jazz education around the world through her workshops, books and other materials. Michele's arrangements have been performed by The Manhattan Transfer, The Swingle Singers and New York Voices, and she currently serves on the faculty at University of Southern California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

ScatAbility Pros
✓ Fantastic App for jazz vocalists and teachersWhat a great app! After spending many years using Aebersold minus tracks for practicing, finally a whole program devoted to vocalists! And I really respect Michele Weir as an educator who knew exactly how to fulfill the needs of both beginning and seasoned jazz singers. BRAVA!.Version: 1.6.4
✓ A Jazz Musician's New BFFI can't believe how well-thought-out this app is. As a jazz pianist and vocalist, I know that quality music apps don't come along every day but this one has pretty much blown me away. If I would have had access to something like this when I was a teenager, I would have learned to improvise so much faster! What a resource! Whether you are a beginner, or an advanced student of jazz, this app will help you. I have been performing professionally for nearly 20 years, and I am even having a blast, utilizing all that it has to offer. There are great play-along tracks. You can listen to other professional singers show you how to scat over a wide variety of jazz styles. With one push of a button, you can mute the singer and have the background track all to yourself. With the push of another button, you can easily record yourself and save it, as well as export it in order to track your progress and maybe even send to your teacher. In the information section, there are ideas about how to teach, using the app in classroom settings, with individuals as well as groups. There are even ideas for games that you can play with your students. There are call and response exercises with wonderful common jazz licks and phrases. It's like a tool box with all the basic tools in it. The developers seem to have thought of everything. You can listen through your phone's external speaker, but there is also an option to use the speaker that you use when you talk on the phone, right against your ear. You can be listening to these tracks in a public place, and no one will ever know. And while you sing along with a particular exercise, it is very easy to look at the lead sheet while you listen. You can see each chord and there is a highlight bar that moves as the music goes along. The exercises are in comfortable keys, both for women and men, and the guest artists that performed on the tracks are on point. I really can't say enough good things about Scatability. Just about everything that you wish the app had, it has. I will be requiring my students to download it, and telling all my musician friends about it for the foreseeable future!.Version: 1.2.1
✓ ScatAbility Positive ReviewsScatAbility Cons
✗ DisappointingI’ve been waiting for this app for months, since I teach vocal jazz and thought it would be a great practice tool for my students. However, the in-app purchases of “song packs” are priced so high (7 packs @ $10 each) that I can’t expect my students to purchase it for themselves. The song packs are “canned” Band-in-a-Box tracks, with professionals scatting over the computer-generated track. There’s only 5 tracks per pack, but you already get one from each pack for free in the sampler the app comes with - so really you’re only getting 4 tracks for your money. I would have loved to use the “call-and-response” tracks in my class as warmups, but since each song pack only includes 2 call-and-response tracks, I’d have to spend about $70 in in-app purchases to get a decent and varied selection to work with. Finally, I thought maybe I could use this in the car to scat along with myself on the way to work. Unfortunately, it doesn’t at the moment work correctly with Bluetooth audio. So, I’ve struck out there too. Two stars instead of one, because the pros doing the scatting are really some of the best vocal jazz performers and teachers on the planet. However, the pricing and organization of the song-packs is a deal-breaker. It would be a big improvement if they would a) provide more tracks for the money, b) allow you to purchase individual songs (for a student, buying a couple of tunes they really need would still be more compelling), and c) provide packs organized by track type (Etude, Call & Response, Exercise) rather than by singer. As it currently stands, it’s just not worth it..Version: 1.2.1
✗ Good concept but horrible UX designI love Michelle Weir and the *idea* of a scat education app, but unfortunately the clunky design is so bad as to make this almost unusable (instructions are hard to find, buttons use low contrast colors so text is hard to read… I could go on). I wondered if Michelle tried to develop it herself to forego the expense of a professional designer. But then I discovered in the app credits that it was designed by one “Leaf cutter inc” company. Ironically when I clicked on the link to learn more about them, it simply closed the app! Yikes. No QA testing either apparently. Maybe if Michelle can get a real professional to fix this design horror, I’ll pay the $$ to get the demos from all the fantastic singers. Meanwhile I’ll keep going through her other excellent resources..Version: 2.11
