✓ One of the most unique games on any platform!I played this game a few months ago and I loved every minute of it. It was fun exploring the world. There is a hint of metroidvania in the level design. The enemies are cool and require precise and varied strategies to defeat. I also enjoyed the personal family story and quirky characters. All in all a memorable experience. ✓ Spectacular, Engrossing, So Much Fun!This game keeps me hooked. The setting, story, and characters are mysterious and dreamlike. The art direction is spectacular! ✓ Brought me to tearsI love this game to death! I have played through on both difficulties multiple times. I have 100% explored every area and found every secret multiple times. The combat is satisfying and fun and enough challenge and changes to keep if fresh throughout. The atmosphere is incredibly recognizable and adds to the story in a great way. The music is passionate and makes the experience all the better. I can’t believe it was made by such a small team. ✓ Metroid meets Infinity BladeI originally overlooked this because I was unsure about the art style and the swipe combat. I'm so glad that I finally picked it up. It looks easy to start with but the standard difficulty level gets pretty hard as you have to face up to 6 enemies at once, frantically prioritising what attacks to defend and finding opportunities to attack. There's a good amount of exploration and environmental puzzles to solve, and your new abilities open up new routes around the game's map. It's big too: about 6h45 for my first playthrough and another hour or so searching for secrets I'd missed..Version: 1.0.10
✓ LovelyDrinkbox Studios produced my all time favorite game Guacamelee, so I might be speaking from a place of bias, but this game was great. Stellar art direction using solid colors and beautiful palettes. An interesting gameplay mechanic that encourages skill and timing, then rewarding you with the in-game “currency” used to upgrade yourself and your tools of combat. As well as an interesting story that was cryptic and alien at first, but I found myself thrust into this land as though it were my own by the end. All-in-all, not a complete waste if cash. Minor gripe is this game is a little harder to play on iPhone models without home buttons, I pulled up my home screen mid-battle so many times, but this game came out before those iPhones existed so you’re keeping the 5 stars Drinkbox. ✓ Best game ever👍I loved this game, including every time it put me on the edge of my seat, brought me to tears, and made me want to hug my family as tight as I could. Everything was amazing and was like nothing I had ever seen before (though at times the battles were repetitive) there were so many things to explore and the characters touched my heart. The only complaint I have is that the player doesn't find out where Sasha went. Whether she went home or stayed in the world she was in (but in my opinion I had hoped she would stay in the current world because of all the friends she made). ✓ Well worth the admission fee!Don't be fooled by the colourful simplistic 2D graphics. Severed is actually a pretty bleak story, but with a lot to offer. The game is set in a series of very well-crafted and intricate dungeons, each with secrets and hidden areas to really encourage exploration, and a character development system which feels appropriate and relevant. Combat starts off easy at first, and the difficulty ramps up at a good pace. Nothing feels too easy or too hard, and there are always other avenues to explore if you get stuck. Graphics are...functional. I didn't like them at first, but for all the colour, this is a very creepy setting, and the monster designs are awesome. Music is unnerving and off-kilter, and that pretty much is exactly what the game is trying to be. Unless you're an absolute perfectionist, there is a fair bit of replay value to the game. ✓ Good, not greatFor the first half the inspired severing mechanic and great atmosphere made this seem like an all-timer, but towards the end the game unfortunately substitutes bleakness for depth in the story and tedium for challenge in the gameplay. Exploration is largely a chore, with very few puzzles to speak of, more just endless trudging from corridor to corridor looking for keys and switches. Others have commented on the combat relying too heavily on buffs and quantity of enemies - you’ll be rolling your eyes when you hit your tenth consecutive battle with four otherwise weak enemies holding magic defense. These overlong encounters kill any sense of momentum going into the final battle. As for the story, after a shocking twist around the midpoint there’s nowhere really left to go, probably could have been better paced. Despite the gripes this is still very much worth picking up, it’s important to support indie developers bringing high quality premium games to the App Store and the game contains several memorable moments and plenty of fun. Just adjust your expectations a bit if you’re planning to trudge through to the end..Version: 1.0.16
✓ Most amazing thing I have ever played...ever.Severed is hands down the best game I have ever played on any gaming platform, BY A LONG SHOT! I feel like anything I say about it won't even begin to describe how awesome and entertaining it was... it was graphically and artistically BEAUTIFUL, dramatic, PLENTY of game time, exciting, really sad surprisingly, INCREDIBLY challenging but not frustratingly maddening to the point of wanting to give up (the struggles throughout the game actually made me want more!) ✓ 100% completionI've explored every nook and cranny of this game (quite literally) and enjoyed every second of it. From a stream of constant new abilities to the upgrades and the creative enemy design. The puzzles and secrets were well made and the green question marks for their locations were helpful. ✓ Must play game!!I’ve been playing this game on and off since 2016. I now own it on my switch and I’ve been playing on there more then my phone since the screen is bigger. But if your looking for a game to play with no internet, don’t mind exploring areas to fight monsters, upgrade yourself/weapon, and moving along with a nice storyline that makes you want more from this game. Then definitely download it!! It’s worth the money! I love this game because I get so much easily immersed even if I haven’t played it in a while. Gameplay is very easy to play and remember. ✓ Beautiful with Good GameplaySet in a wonderful, vivid dark-fantasy world. Combat is fairly intuitive, unique and fun. Although progression through the world seems very non-linear, the actual progression is quite strict: as you play you unlock new abilities that allow access to new areas, however you can only unlock these abilities in a specific order. ✓ Oh, ManI don't know what people are saying about the game being "repetitive," "boring," "easy." It's probably the best game with the best story I've ever played on the App Store, and that's beyond impressive, given that most apps will get dull overtime. There's an element of creepiness and it's haunting to step through every doorway because the game is unpredictable and leaves you guessing after each step. And it's not easy. I personally managed to get through Casual mode without a death, but I will say it was challenging to do so. The puzzles are intriguing but simple enough, and a few of the secrets I could only solve with the help of others. (Thank you, internet.) The story was great, and a little saddening. The visuals were great, given the lighting and play with colours, and I especially appreciated the "change night to day" mechanic. Working the map and environment around and connecting them together was incredibly clever, and going back to look through all areas for secrets - while a little tedious - is accomplishing and definitely worth it in the end. It's not a child's game. While the graphics aren't "out of this world" it's art style is unique and the characters' designs are brilliantly twisted yet cool. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if it isn't yours, you're missing out. Severed is worth every cent of the money you give it. Eleven out of ten, would play again. ✓ AMAZING GAMEThis game is so unlike anything I've ever played before on ANY platform - it's by far the most in-depth, surreal, engaging game I've ever gotten from the Apple Store. I'm always looking for long, challenging games that aren't simple and repetitive, and they are far and few between. This game grabs you from the start - I have been playing for 3 hours straight and I'm about 25% done. The artwork is stunningly unique, the music is hauntingly beautiful, the gameplay is unique yet intuitive - far from repetitive - and the story is unlike any other. I'm usually one of those "rate later" people, but I couldn't wait to share my review of this one. If you love immersive gameplay, with exploration, an RPG element, and a story that's full of surprises, you will LOVE this game. I wish I could give it double the stars, and I would have paid double the price given the incredible detail and the gripping nature of this game. You HAVE to try it - you won't be disappointed! ✓ Fun but the sun and moon system is annoyingEverything is pretty easy to understand I completed the game 100% in a couple sittings without googling anything the gameplay is simply and not too challenging I’ve never found myself stuck on a single encounter it’s very forgiving (on standard) I wish there was a harder difficulty it was pretty easy to just spam the blind on most enemies and kill them that way the only Other grievance I have with the game is the sun and moon system you find in the domain of the crows requires a lot of backtracking through a lot of the level multiple times to get all 18 secrets 10/10 would recommend.Version: 1.0.20

✓ Fun at first but combat turns annoyingI love the story, art style, characters, and combat system of Severed. My only complaint whatsoever is that around midgame the combat takes a turn for the worse in that it expects you to rapidly take on new concepts and use them against many enemies before you’ve gotten the hang of using it against even one. Perhaps this is different if you pick to play the casual difficulty instead of standard, but I’d think it speaks for itself when someone can play through the first third ~ half of the game relying on timing and strategy, but within a brief 30 minute window find they can no longer continue because they haven’t been given a chance to even attempt a certain type of parry before being thrown into a 3+ monster battle where they’re expected to use it flawlessly or die trying. It’s repetetive and annoying, and it just discourages the idea of opening the app back up. You get to this point and stop entirely because the thought of opening the app fills you with boredom and grief knowing what you’ll be thrown back to. This absurd learning curve ruins the player’s ability to enjoy the game, and basically begs you to delete it..Version: 1.0.20
✓ AMAZING needs more boss fightsSevered is a great game full of beautiful and quite cool characters. But... the boss battles are too short and there’s not enough of them also you spaced them out so much after the crow golem I was craving more boss fights + you made the final boss (the dragon) soooooooo easy. Plz make this a update because IM NOT PAYING 4 A SEVERED 2 BTW another thing is the two headed dragon dude was cool but you did not put him in many fights.also the art for the bosses and there weak points are cool like crow golems weak point and the dragons weak point. ✓ Good game with one significant technical flawThis game’s unique setting and characters, seemingly based on South American myth and non-specific demonology, are spellbinding. The combat mechanics focus on sword use and make specific use of the touch interface; they would not work as effectively with a mouse or controller. The character progression and game length also are satisfying. Overall this is a strong game with the unfortunate technical flaw of frequently freezing although not crashing. The action simply periodically locks for several seconds and then resumes. If this only happened during travel it could be dismissed as loading, but it occurs during combat, too—which can lead to significant issues. If this problem were corrected the game would earn a solid five stars. Even so, it’s well worth a thorough play, especially at its reasonable price..Version: 1.0.17

Dissonant and unnerving, with foreign sounds and rhythmic clashes selling the complete other-ness of the world you're in. And the gameplay, my god the gameplay. Big influences from Zelda in dungeon puzzle design. But most important is the combat mechanics. I put off buying it to see how good the 3DS port was. There's no glaring problems, but the hardware limitations of the 3DS means no HD graphics and the dual screens don't add much to the gameplay as they're mirrored. Also it's over 2x the price. Apart from difficulty severing some enemies in focus mode (the 3 armed ball guy comes to mind) and the slowness of traversal (tapping the map and fast travelling to a room would be nice), I think it's a great game. Graphics, sound and a refreshingly gloomy plot are sympathetic to each other and well polished. Naturally, for this type of game to challenge it needs to push your reflexes and ability to cope with a lot simultaneously, which necessarily leads to stressful and frustrating situations. Gripe-wise, sometimes defending seems actually impossible and you rely purely on strong passive buffs to keep you alive, and sometimes an off tap will turn you away from a critical enemy at the worst time. Despite detractors suggesting it was overly simplistic and monotonous, I found it refreshing and rich throughout. Despite necessary backtracking I never felt bored, and despite at times it being unevenly challenging, it never felt punishing. There did seem to be an even-handedness in the developers game architecture, in which they sought a balance between difficulty and accomplishment, never spoon feeding but also not sending you naked into a burning obstacle course either! My only complaint is that replay-ability seems low, based on the fact that in order to defeat the final boss, I already acquired all of the upgrades and items. Maybe again in a year or so. The character designs and the colors are also unique, giving to the game a personnal touch. 2. Story: Poignant and interesting. ✓ Clever, creepy, memorableThematically, Severed is a classic dungeon-crawling quest: you begin amid the ruins of your home except in a strange otherworld, your arm's been cut off and your family kidnapped by monsters, then a demon gives you a sword and you set off to find your family. It's a bit like Zelda for people who thought the visual designs of that series weren't unsettling *enough*, and also wished it had taken a more viscerally literal interpretation of the term "Heart Piece." Aesthetically, the game is striking, with Aztec-inspired designs rendered in bold strokes of color, and some poignant musical motifs (and judicious use of silence) that make for effective emotional interludes. Mechanically, this is a game meant for mobile (even if it was originally released for PS Vita). Swipe-based combat may sound simplistic, but it's really more about timing and managing the countdowns of multiple enemies' attacks -- you mostly gain upgrades through severing the body parts of your foes, but you can only do so after you build up enough focus, so it's often a matter of keeping enemies alive for that final stroke as much as it is about killing them. My one complaint is that the combat can get a bit repetitive toward the end (some more variations in attack patterns would have been welcome), but it stays a challenge throughout. ✓ Unsettling and visually strikingI took a chance on severed, and now I will say so should you. The puzzles are the right amount of challenging, and the visuals and soundtrack are hauntingly brilliant. It takes the slashing mechanics of games like fruit ninja and accents it with a well-made set of lite RPG skill trees and an interesting story. Its kept me entertained for a while now, and there are things in each area that you can go back and explore later for increased replay value. Highly recommended..Version: 1.0.18

Essentially a first person dungeon crawl, the game follows an unnamed protagonist as she struggles to reunite her family, fighting against bizarre foes in beautiful locations. ✓ It was decentGood, easy to understand gameplay, did get more difficult but nothing impossible. The length of the game is just about okay but I completed it with just a few hours gameplay. The graphics are quite nice and the soundtrack is good as well. Not sure it's worth the money for the fun you get out of it. And (spoilers) the storyline is just tragic and could have done with some positive moments as it's really quite depressing! But not a bad game..Version: 1.0.8

✓ Sweet HellscapeThe aesthetic of this game is awesome. It's like a really colourful vision of Hell, complete with purple two-headed crows. Enjoying it immensely; however I'm having some trouble with the game centre. Tapping "achievements" I get error messages about the data being unavailable. Plus every time I close the app it's like my progress in achievements is reset, so I keep getting the same ones over and over. Not a big deal, but kinda irritating..Version: 1.0.8
