Night Owl - Sleep Coach for Positive User Reviews

CBT-I for Insomnia Win!I have and mild insomnia for 5 years, then it became severe over 5 months. I would lay in bed for 5-7 hours a night awake but yearning to sleep so badly. My body would be all tingly and ready to sleep, but I could not pass into that unconscious state! I tried muscle relaxers, CBD oil, melatonin, magnesium glycinate and a few other things that just failed miserably! I went to my VA clinic and asked for CBT-I and they agreed and started me on it. But I have two small children at home to take care of and the clinic is a good 30 minute drive away so going in weekly to every other week just wasn’t sustainable. So I searched for an app that could be my CBT-I instructor and found this app. I have a strong resolve to accomplish goals and getting thru CBT-I is one of them. I am currently on day 32 of the app program and following it to a tee. Bless The Lord! It is working. I am going to bed sleepy and falling asleep within minutes and staying asleep! I wake up and get right out of bed at my designated time and stick to it no matter how tempting it is to stay and get some more sleep. CBT-I has been proven many times over to be the most effective CURE for insomnia and I’m proving to be just another case of success. Truly follow the instructions, commit to it fully and you will see the sandman again! Wonderful money spent on this app!! Update: it’s been a year now and my sleep has been so good. I follow the rules everyday and night. I go to bed sleepy, fall asleep, and stay asleep all night long. Sure, I have an occasional “bad night”, but then usually by the next night it’s back to sleep again! This app is gold!.Version: 1.2.6

Decent app - lots of issuesThe app isn’t fully user tested, has all sorts of bugs and repeats tasks. For the first week it says “Read establishing baseline “ as one of your tasks each day, even though the task is reading the same 4-line paragraph over and over again. Just seems like a lot more testing could be done..Version: 1.2.2

If you have insomnia, PLEASE use this app.I've had a depression/anxiety diagnosis for two years now. One of the main issues I've had is early awakening (around 3:30 am). I knew about cbt-i and the basics of how to do sleep restriction, but I needed guidance. I looked for an app for ages but could never find one until Night Owl. Previously, I would go 3-4 days on 2-3 hours sleep and I function best on 8-9. Now I'm getting 7-9 hours of good sleep a night. Every step of cbt-I will be explained to you. You will need to truly invest in the program. Each week, you learn a bit more about sleep and why you'll be adding that week's step. It will help you calculate your sleep needs and recalibrate your sleep cycle. IT WORKS. You will need to be prepared to let your brain catch up with what's happening, but that's why it takes 56 days. Commit to it and I promise you'll sleep better. I am. Support is also pretty awesome- they get back to you quickly and know exactly how their app works..Version: 1.1.7

Finally a way back to sleep!I did not follow the app exactly, initially so this took longer than expected. Was extremely challenging with reviving my sleep drive but…it worked! I have had sleep issues for about 3 years, combo of reasons which created ongoing poor sleep habits. Completed the app, following the challenging rules and I have experienced restorative sleep again and it is life changing!! Thank you for putting this in an app, as I don’t know of any sleep therapist in my area. I have already passed this on to many people in my life. I know I will need to keep working on this and following all the sleep rigor, but what a reward to feel rested again and have more clarity and energy!.Version: 1.2.8

Definitely works if you stick with itThe interface of this app honestly could use some updating but if you get over that and complete the program, you will see results. I’ve had severe insomnia on and off for about 8 years now. In my most recent cycle I had tried Mitrazapine, Trazodone and some other prescription meds. They would all work seasonally but my body would eventually reject them. My doctor said I needed to try a program like this now that I had been treating my anxiety and my insomnia hadn’t subsided. I say all of this to say that after the 60 days I had completely reset my circadian rhythm and not longer needed sleeping pills to sleep. The process seems tedious but it genuinely works..Version: 1.2.8

Excellent appFor 2-3 decades I have lived with insomnia. I am 56 years old. I had no trouble falling asleep (even at my desk!), but I would wake up after 4 or 5 hours of solid sleep and be awake sometimes for two or three hours before zonking our again. Or I would go through a cycle of being asleep and awake for that length of time. Often that time would be filled with despair and anxiety. I am 2/3 of the way through this program and am sleeping much, much better—more and more often I sleep through the night. I am also much more alert during the day, which needless to say is making my days more productive. This program is written and presented in an easy to understand, very supportive, personable manner. I have recommended it to my friends and family with sleep disorders..Version: 1.2.2

Great evidence based CBT-I appThis is a fabulous app well founded in the science of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). It guides you through the process with videos and text. I highly recommend. I disagree with the negative review above about lying. You have agree to get trying to maintain your prescribed bedtime, which I assume is what the person is referring to. You have to restate your commitment each day, which is important for CBT-i. It's not lying, it simply stating your intent to reach your goal. Great app to help your improve your insomnia. This app essential dose what a very hard to find sleep therapist who does CBT-I would do. I recommend apps like this one to my patients frequently as a neurologist..Version: 1.1.7

Very informative!I learned a lot about healthy sleep habits and changing my negative thoughts towards insomnia. Thank you so much Sleep Coach!.Version: 1.2.8

Updated!!Had no sound at first but contacted support who were excellent and helped me get sound up. So far so good. Still in the logging phase. I also checked out a book from the library to use with this app so together Im hoping it will help..Version: 1.1.7

Extremely Effective for Sleep IssuesI don’t write App reviews. However, I feel compelled to write this one to help others who may have trouble sleeping. I have tried many different approaches to improve my sleep — read articles, watched videos, OTC sleep aids, sleep test, etc. Nothing really worked. This App works! You need to consistently use it and diligently stick to the program and complete the daily tasks. The App is well designed, easy to use and intuitive. Give it a try! Customer service is also excellent — whenever I have a question or concern they get right back to me with a helpful response. I recommend this program without reservation — this is the App I suggest to family and friends..Version: 1.2.2

Very helpfulI didn’t follow the recommendations exactly but gained a lot of new skills for addressing future bouts of insomnia with this app. I’m also now able to get out of bed easily and an hour earlier than before. I have been trying and failing to do this for years! The price of the app is definitely worth it if you are willing to commit to working the program :).Version: 1.2.8

32 days into this program and making progress!I recently was surprising successful with a popular weight loss CBT app and lost 15 lbs! So for the first time, I was hopeful that there might be a CBT type app for insomnia, as I have dealt with it for over 20 years. I found this Sleep Coach app and thought I’d give this 56 day program a try as it was reasonably priced. Retraining your body and sleep cycle takes time as I have researched Cognitive Behavior Therapy online and this app seems to be helping my body to build new normals at an attainable pace. So far, so good:).Version: 1.2.5

Don’t let poor design fool you. It’s content is great! This app has helped me massively with my sleep issues, increased my overall awareness of my relationship with sleep. Also, the fact of being on a schedule has brought a rhythm to my day and a sense of being consistently supported in this issue. My only critique is that the app is not very well made. Videos have poor visual and sound quality, texts are sometimes too wide for the screen, and the overall app is not very pleasurable to use. But!!! It actually is helping me and I’m very thankful for it!.Version: 1.2.2

2/23I had been part of a sleep-cognitive restructuring group years ago and slipped back into bad habits. This app is easy to use and well worth the time. More important, sleep is improved..Version: 1.1.9

Night Owl - Sleep CoachI am generally happy with this app. That is to say, my sleeping has improved, both qualitatively and quantitatively. I think there are a few areas in which the app could be improved, and I am providing feedback to the developer with specifics. But in general I think it’s worth the time, effort, and money as it is right now..Version: 1.2.8

Years and years of poor sleep!I tried this as a last resort. I basically was tired of using sleep aids (nearly nightly) just to get a good nights sleep. I knew my sleep hygiene was poor but didn’t have the willpower to correct the problems myself...and I was doubtful that my sleep would improve. This program really works when followed. My sleep slowly improved when I started following my sleep plan and quickly worsened when I slacked off mid-program. Glad I made the purchase!.Version: 1.2.0

Extremely helpful! This app is a bargain! You do have to be self motivated and self disciplined because you have to commit to interacting every day. But the information you get , at the pace that you get it is perfect. I thought I knew a lot about sleep and a lot about getting better sleep, but I learned so much from this app, and it really solidified what I needed to do. I am sleeping so much better and I believe a lot of it had to do with Night Owl. Not fancy, but EXPERT advice in the comfort of your home and your time schedule..Version: 1.2.8

A Digital Sleep PsychologistI am a psychiatrist keen on utilizing the most beneficial and least harmful interventions. For insomnia, we throw a lot of people on medications. These medications don't work directly on the sleep system and cause cognitive impairment, memory loss, dependency and other issues. Research time and time again shows that these medications really aren't that effective, and the work by knocking out your memory so people don't remember they had a poor night of sleep. I have been using this app myself and have been recommending it to clients. If someone is not on a sleep medication, unless it is very severe it insomnia, I require them to undergo a course of time due to behavioral therapy for insomnia. This app of course is very good; it's accessible and cheap. It's a very comprehensive program and I can vouch for its science and application. I have learned a lot myself about sleep through the lessons that the app provides. I could not believe just how many false beliefs I had about my own sleep, and sleep in general. The lessons and application are profound. People undergoing this app or a course of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia me to realize that this is a process. These are sleep habits and beliefs built over time, they are not going to work immediately. This app works to reset the sleep cycle and it takes time and effort to do so. A tip for using this app. In the sleep diary, you just have to roughly remember how many minutes you were awake in the night and do not have to base that off of the time you woke up. Trying to calculate the minutes from the time you woke up early is harder than just estimating it roughly..Version: 1.1.7

It is workingThe therapy seems to be working for me. Wish the app would have a Q&A for such issues as adjusting sleep log for change to Daylight Savings time..Version: 1.2.5

Night owlHave so benefitted from this training. Very beneficial with great tips and new ways of approaching sleep. Mine has returned!.Version: 1.2.2

Great app! Some minor glitches (asking me to login occasionally, intermittent video play, etc.), but very helpful and effective..Version: 1.1.8

Retired RNHelping to establish a routine bedtime and sleep schedule. Informative information about sleep patterns and how the body works.Version: 1.2.8

Helpful for sleep phase/circadian troublesI don’t have traditional insomnia but more sleep phase issues/feeling sleepy at the wrong times - I sleep fine once I go to bed - but I was going to bed as late as 5AM, getting up between 7:30-11AM, and was trying to catch up on sleep by sleeping in on weekends. Getting up early on weekdays for a month didn’t make me sleepy at night. A sleep medicine appointment was a couple months away so I decided to try this app while waiting. I am so happy I did! The program is supposedly individualized based on your response to sleep logs you do the first week or so, and I believe it truly is, because it is the first time that I was ever given sleep advice that truly applied to me and is helping. I am about halfway through and already going to bed by 1 or 2 and getting up around 7 every day. My family is happier. I am actually starting to feel sleepy at night. You definitely really have to stick with it for it to work- repeating tasks and building routines and focusing on certain thoughts is part of how CBT works. Completing tasks within the app takes a minute or two most days and maybe 10-20 minutes or so once a week when you are given new education & tasks. The app could use a challenge question 1-2 times a week that asks you to name a couple things that could or are interfering with a step/task and has you troubleshoot a couple ideas that could help if any and asks you to take one action that could help if you have one (with the understanding that it’s self-reflection and content won’t be addressed specifically by the program). I have had no issues with the interface described in prior reviews so I believe at least on iPhones they have been fixed. You can zoom in and out on text with buttons on-screen, and the sleep logs are quick and easy to use. I appreciate the educational material and that important points are covered both in text & in video so it covers different learning styles and drives home key points. The videos are low budget in-office, but they’re easy to follow and they work so it’s not really important. My notifications don’t work correctly- I get a reminder to complete a sleep log after it’s already done, and the red notification circle comes & goes seemingly at random regardless of whether my tasks are completed. I just set my own bedtime reminders etc, but it would be helpful if the app gave supportive reminders at appropriate times based on our program. Overall I highly recommend trying the app to anyone who cannot easily access (or doesn’t want to do) in-person cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia or sleep phase disorders, or to use as an additional support..Version: 1.2.8

It works!Been using the app for 24 days now and following the program to de-program works. I’ve had multiple consecutive nights of good quality sleep and it keeps getting better. Was stuck on Ambien and wanted to stop, so and had tried a few OTC products that only worked once. Going to keep on it and see if all my sleep troubles can be put to rest..Version: 1.2.8

Very helpfulThis program is really helping me! I’m learning a lot and applying what I’ve learned and I think it’s helping! I’m getting more sleep than I have in over a year..Version: 1.2.8

Glad I took the time to do this!!Great App to get the basics on good sleep. The app gave me good information and also removed some stressful thoughts I had with my sleep issues. 🙏.Version: 1.2.8

SleepThanks! I’m sleeping better than ever!.Version: 1.2.6
