Lutron RadioRA 2 + HWQS App for Negative User Reviews

Major issuesApp keeps shutting down. Used to work. Won’t find my devices “cannot connect to bridge” even after hardware reset including WiFi..Version: 7.6.2

Long term bugFor years now, the app will at times fail to load repeatedly. I have to delete it and reinstall it. Please fix the issue. It happens on ipad and iphone.Version: 7.6.8

Ageing app, not optimised for current screens & broken now too?Not optimised for newer iPhone screens. Doesn’t handle the iPhone 14 notch elegantly, nor has it ever taken full use of the width of recent iPhone screens because when viewing a two column button panel the app only ever shows one column of buttons at a time. Why??? Also, there is zero feedback (haptic would be nice) when a button is pressed, and due to the few seconds delay, you often aren’t sure if your button press worked, so you try again. Also, this could be a coincidence, but since iOS 16 launched, the status of my lights is never correct when first opening a room / light. Lights will show as off, even if they are on, having been turned on by a physical wall button. So not only had the software not progressed in years it is now going backwards. Not particularly impressed..Version: 7.6.12

Does not work with homekit still... no idea whySerious problems despite buying a multi-thousand dollar homeworks qs device and using the lutron connect app. I give it a star since the app opens and closes my shades. NO idea why you cant make shade group and shade scene changes on the app itself. It’s ridiculous. I finally got everything working on alexa but can’t get scenes to connect to HomeKit. This is the MAIN reason i spent over $3k getting this new box installed. Lutron needs to make this right given that I have a $30k+ shade system and I can’t do what a home depot shade can do. The days of installers being necessary for everything is OVER and customers wont stand for this no matter how much integrator protectionism they have. Installers for us are 200miles away and are too busy to really do followup work. They will charge you for an install and will leave service calls (despite being expensive) for last tier on their priority list..Version: 6.2

Lutron not user friendlyTrying to connect my phone to bridge. Not connecting despite following poor instructions. Impossible to find anything on web for help. Hold time for customer service long!!! And every time I reopen the app it prompts me for a new password. For this much money for a system it should be seamless integration and setup..Version: 7.6.2

App not working with iPadSame problem. App works with iPhone not iPad.Version: 7.6.1

Watch App Still Crashes on OpenAfter installing the latest versions of the Lutron app, iOS on the phone (iPhone X, iOS 12.1.3) watchOS on the watch (watch version 3, watchOS 5.1.4) the watch app still crashes on open. The iPhone app still works normally. Please fix..Version: 7.2.1

App Takes Forever to OpenThe system is great but the app takes forever, upwards of 5 minutes, to open. At that point I could just go adjust every light in my house manually. I don’t have this problem with any other smart home app. Is there a bug fix in the works?.Version: 7.4.5

App is horribleLutron homeworks is a massively premium product. The app on the other hand looks like it was created by a 3rd grader in 2012. The watch aspect is absolutely an abomination, the phone app is barely passable. You (developers but especially management) should hang your head in shame. Please spend roughly $36 and get this fixed..Version: 7.6.14

Additional Hardware Required? As I understand it, the Home Control+ app is being discontinued in April 2020 and this is intended to be its replacement. However, for me to use this new app it appears I will have to purchase and install a new Bridge Connect device. Is that correct? If so I’m not feeling like this is an upgrade..Version: 7.4.4

Please do somethingPlease do something about your bad app, instead of sending a note saying thank you for your response. I spent $65,000 on a Lutron lighting system, which works great. But trying to control the system with the Lutron app is a complete and thorough waste of time..Version: 7.6.8

Big step backwards. In home+ the editing key pads function and schedules was very easy to use. In connect it is not even available. What’s the use of spending high tens of thousands of dollars on a Luton system when you can’t manage it from your phone. Stone Age app - Unfit for purpose..Version: 7.6

Apple Watch version needs lots of improvementNever works reliably and requires phone connection. Please make a native Watch app that works independently of the phone..Version: 6.1

Easily the worst app I have to usePoorly designed, unable to be modified unless by your licensed electrician at their rate, which means you’re paying an electrician’s rate to change names inside of a crappy iOS app. Utter scam and the next electrician will be paid to remove Lutron entirely from my life..Version: 7.6.12

Crap appAs every other review has stated, Lutron builds great products but you may need a integration support tech to move into your home! This is not a DIY product and if you are fortunate (sarcasm) enough to live outside of their minimal support hours EST, TS I guess! Terrible software and at this point I would rather throw it away and work with a product much more user friendly. It would actually be cheaper in the long run than paying MORE money to get this crap running as intended. Good Luck I say!.Version: 6.1

Who wrote this software a high school kidIt is so slow and has very little functionality ! It needs to be updated to a more up to date look and speed ..Version: 6.1

Distasteful Company EthicsI have been using the Lutron Home Control + for 3 years and dutifully paying the annual $79 subscription fee. Last week my subscription expired and the app will not allow me to renew. In speaking w Lutron support I was advised that the app has been mothballed and that I must now purchase a new piece of hardware - the connect bridge - and download a new app to restore functionality. So the bottom line is that the software was arbitrarily disabled by Lutron. This was done w no advance notice or warning. Rather than shut off customers, the proper thing would have been to keep the app operational and simply announce no additional support for it. Instead the system I paid thousands for is dead. Bad move Lutron..Version: 7.4.2

The WorstI have passes the certification classes and have set up two personal homes with RadioRa and Ra2. Home theatre, RS-232 connections for control, whole home lighting, etc. This “bridge” is useless IMHO. The Lutron Home+ app is all you need. If you have access to the Windows S/W, then the Connect H/W and terrible app are useless expense and frustration. Pay the $59/yr for remote access with Home+ 99% of people will be just fine with the Casita environment..Version: 6.2

Dated App and Support ModelFirst, my Radio RA hardware is bulletproof but this software experience after spending tens of thousands of dollars is so terrible i’m avoiding lutron all together for my vacation home for a number of reasons. 1. The app is dated, clunky and a pain to use. Fortunately i can control individual lights in my own scenes in homekit. Often times it feels like usability is restricted to protect installers. Which leads me to… 2. Nerfed product to please installers. I certainly understand the need to protect your installer base but that model is dying and you aren’t making any middle ground concessions to users paying cold hard cash for the system. I am happy to pay my integrator to spec, install and setup new additions. I am not fine paying hundreds of dollars for a house call to tweak a level setting for one set of lights in a scene. Not only are installers backed up like every trade, it’s ecologically wasteful, and it’s straight up robbery to require this process in this day and age. As a result, I’m no longer going Lutron in my new house that would have been a bigger install than my other. I advise everyone else to do the same until Lutron adjusts their customer hostile model for the modern age..Version: 7.6.10

Still has bugs! You still can’t access the room at the bottom of the scrolling list, even after repeatedly informing Lutron tech support about it for over a year. Not sure if it’s specific to the iPhone X Max or not? PLEASE FIX THIS DESIGN FLAW PLEASE!.Version: 7.6.1

What a messSo am I understanding correctly that we need to add a Connect Bridge to the RadioRa2 system to get the new Connect app to work? Because as with the original Lurton app, I cannot get it to detect the RadioRa2 network. When the old app did connect, it was quirky (auto off timer worked, but auto on didn’t, stuff like that). I have an 8 year old system, so maybe the firmware is out of date? But I have to say, it is not obvious what is wrong, and I feel like I paid a ton of money for a set of ordinary dimmable light switches. Was hoping this new app would be intuitive and easy (and working!!!), but the whole system was a waste of money. Very dissatisfied..Version: 7.4.8

Can’t get this to workPaid my electrician a small fortune to upgrade and now can’t get the app to connect. Why did you do this without a full explanation of how to make the change? So frustrating..Version: 7.4.4

Still no fan control on HomeKitPlease let me know if Radio RA2 is no longer a supported product. It looks like you’ve added HomeKit support for fans on almost all other products other than Radio RA2. Should I just switch to Caseta?.Version: 7.4.3

App needs updatingThe app is slow to come up but works reasonably well once it is loaded. Would be nice if customizations on one device would work on other devices. The biggest issue that I have is the Apple Watch issue - the app is available but quickly goes blank when you pull it up on the Apple Watch, rendering it unusable. They really need to fix this issue..Version: 7.2.1

Deserves it's low ratingIt's just not easy to use. Homekit integration doesn't work Customizing it is hard. Menu experience is poor and hard to remember. For a high end hardware product they just don't get the job done on the app side.Version: 7.6.3

Zero support from LutronWhen I called Lutron tech support yesterday (because Lutron Home Control app is giving me error message “could not connect to the system) they said the app has been buggy ever since ios13.1 but they decided not to do anything to fix it because they announced they will stop supporting the app in April 2020, and everyone will be required to move to this new app which I tried to download but it didn’t work for the following reason. The tech support agent said that in order to maintain the same functionality I had before I will need to 1) buy new hardware (ie Lutron Bridge ($220); and 2) pay Lutron installer (presumably >$800). I’m frustrated with this because 1) it’s clearly not April 2020 yet and implicit in saying you will stop supporting something in April 2020 is that you will support it up until then, which they are not doing; and 2) when I paid through the nose a few years ago for a new Lutron system I was not expecting Lutron to institute this planned obsolescence of the product I purchased. I’m in the midst of building our new home and this experience will likely cause me to decide to avoid giving Lutron my business again..Version: 7.4.5

Editing options? The app was doing great before, but the loss of the customer being able to edit their own system has severely limited the functionality of the app. Please address this issue ASAP..Version: 7.4.5

Needs HomeKit support for TouchPro thermostatsWould be 5 stars if it was possible to expose TouchPro thermostats to HomeKit Ultimately it’s about simplicity of use, having one single app (for Lutron and non-Lutron devices) which I can point members of my household and customers to and having Siri be capable of controlling temperature. Crestron has always handled this well but with them now charging extra for 3rd party lighting control it’s a harder sell. I tend to prefer Lutron + HomeKit but HVAC control is a gap that needs to be filled..Version: 6.1

It doesn’t connect remotelyI was happy to pay the annual fee for the previous app since it actually worked. This one doesn’t connect remotely and it is very slow to load even when I am inside the apartment and connected to the same wifi network. It’s seriously awful and unpractical. Makes life harder, not easier..Version: 7.4.2

Works great, but...I have an iPhone X and am using this app on a fairly extensive Lutron system, including lights and shades. Works great when loaded, but only works for 2-3 weeks, then won’t load (rebooting phone does not fix it). Only way I can get the app working again is to delete it from my phone and reinstall. The Siri commands are saved (thankfully) but all the “Favorite” settings have to be redone. Of course the time of failure always seems to happen at most inconvenient times. This is a poor reflection on an otherwise decent company..Version: 7.4.5

No iPhone 14 support after 6 months?I am disappointed with the Lutron app. It's been over six months since the iPhone 14 was released, and yet they haven't updated their app to fit the new screen size. The app looks terrible on my phone, and it's frustrating to use. I've reached out to customer support, but they haven't given a real answer..Version: 7.6.13

Lights often don’t turn on when timer is set.I enjoy being able to control my home lighting with my cellular device. I set specific times for specific lights to turn on. There are 2-3 lights that sometimes turn on and sometimes don’t which is a bit of a headache. This app would be great if worked more frequently..Version: 7.6.2

It works but so portly designedConsidering the cost of lutron homework’s the app is like a step back in time to using an old dos computer. It’s almost impossible to set up a schedule. I mostly use my Alexa to set up any type of schedule or routine because the lutron app is so clunky. Now I see why my installer recommended using a system like Savaent or control 4. I wish the developer would look at how those programs work and make a more user friendly interface..Version: 7.4.8

App has potential, but not quite there. After investing almost $50-60k in full powered motorized shades, and a full radio ra2 system throughout my home, while I love what I can do with physical switches, it seems somewhat limiting that I cannot manage the button icons, room layouts, load names, and button types “toggles” vs “presses”, or manage any of the advanced setup without going through my dealer every time. I wish there was a version of the software that was also available on PC for homeowners, and that the mobile app allowed for more customization for end users. Regarding the UI, it would be much nicer if you could more easily raise and lower load levels in a room or area without having to first open the room, then open the load, and then finally control the load. If I’m looking to raise and lower individual levels in a room relative to one another on the fly, it’s just a lot of extra clicks. Additionally, while a dealer can add virtual keypads to rooms, it would be nice if I could define scenes specifically for use in the mobile app for certain rooms or areas. Just seems like lutron needs to spend some time with a UI/UX designer and really think about use cases..Version: 7.6.5

You Still Want a Remote Access subscription.NOT a replacement for your Remote Access subscription. When I purchased the Lutron Connector Bridge I was shocked to discover that it utilizes a different app than the Lutron Home Control+ app. This app, ‘Lutron Connect’ app is terrible compared with the ‘Lutron Home Control+’ app. Lutron Connect has very little organization to it. All of your rooms are simply alphabetized. There’s a total lack of color utilization. Text is micro small and it’s difficult to determine the status of lights or shades. Strongly recommend you continue to use the Lutron Home Control+ app and pay the $79 fee for remote access. It’s a small price to pay for a vastly superior app. The Lutron Connect app is also old-school when it comes to passwords. Requiring numbers upper and lower case etc. Also, as a condition of any Lutron sale make certain that your dealer installs a working copy of the Lutron Windows desktop software for you. This software is necessary for making anything but minor changes on your Lutron system. Don’t get me wrong, Lutron makes EXCELLENT hardware. But this app is a stinker..Version: 6.1

Lousy developmentThe “adjusting” functionality has no timeout, so when troubleshooting a bad connection with a device, if you end up in the adjusting phase, the app gets stuck trying and must be force closed. No error handling or timeout. Not sure who developed this app but they apparently don’t get basic UX design principles..Version: 7.6.7

Lack of functionality- can’t create new scenes (how is it possible that this is the case??) - can’t simply edit the description of a button on a keypad (again, hard to understand why functionality not available) Those are two incredibly basic functions. Your literature directs customers to use the Apple “Home” app to create new scenes....but then these scenes don’t integrate back to the Lutron app. Totally baffling. Great physical product. App is not close, sorry. Who can I speak to about this?.Version: 7.4.8

I was told this app would be greatWhy can’t I save a bunch of different layouts? I just want to hit one button and set the mood for dinner, or for sitting by the fire, or for cooking. I don’t want to tweak every light every time. Barely an app. If I spend this much on your system i expect way more functionality..Version: 7.6.8

Needs a lot of improvement- Can’t edit/program on the app whenever I want - app doesn’t recognize when lights are turned on manually via switch - UI is clunky Overall this app needs a lot of improvement. I expected a lot more from Lutron..Version: 7.6.3

Technology trapAs a homeowner I find myself at the mercy of Lutron’s dealer network. My first experience was brutal with a poorly programmed house and a dealer that was very slow to respond to requests, consistently failed to resolve issues and charged very highly. As a controls engineer of 25 years I would like to have more access to make slight modifications myself. I had installed and programmed my RR2 system in my old house but found Lutron Homework’s system in the house when we bought. Now we are trapped. I would remove the system because of the lack of access but the way it is wired I would have to rewire the entire house. This cuts me off and leaves me as easy meat for the Lutron dealer network. If I had more access I may not feel this way. Lutron has some excellent products but their market stance on this issue makes me want to never use them again..Version: 7.6.12

FrustratingAfter getting the app and setting up your system, the app will stop working . It tells that it can’t discover the system. After endless attempts to re-discover, it finally will discover the system. But, don’t get your hopes up. It won’t last long. I am sorry there is a Lutron system in our home. If the builder had asked us about it, we would have declined. Be warned unless you like to suffer..Version: 7.6.2

App not working...Can sign in but app not responding... seems like last update is a potential problem. Had no issues prior to this? Works on iPhone but not on iPad. Update... interesting response from Lutron...” we can investigate the issue you are seeing by going to Settings -> Help -> Send Feedback.”... more than happy to do so... however, there is no send feedback in the settings/help menu of the app I’m using... I’ve resorted to deleting the app and reloading... works for a bit, then it’s locked up again... I’ve done that four times now! Works, then 20 minutes later, it’s locked up???.Version: 7.4.8

Clunky, slow and crash-prone is no way to develop softwareUpgraded to an iPhone 11 and my Lutron connect app is completely useless. Won’t open except for a second and then it crashes. Total brick..Version: 7.4.5

Getting betterI'm glad to see a major update and like the new "Lights On" display...but the new color scheme and background are awful. Please add the ability to change color schemes and background..Version: 6.0

Great app, but slow/incorrect state of fixturesThe app is great, but for some reason even with fast internet connectivity, the status of fixtures is often incorrect or very slow to have status updated. That doesn’t seem to be an issue with other cloud-based smart home devices that I use..Version: 7.6.9

Crashing with IPhone 11 Pro and iOS 13After buying a new device iPhone 11 Pro, and migrating via iCloud all applications, the Lutron Connect is crashing .....Version: 7.4.5

I'm a software eng and I Couldn't make it workI have radiora2 lighting and wanted to connect it with home automation. I bought the connect bridge, paid $50 for the annual service, and can't make it work. I can't tell the difference between this app and Lutron home+. Can't get help online. Lutron has great products if you want an installer. This is not ready for DIY..Version: 5.1

OutdatedAfter spending $$$$$ installing and programming this app needs a lot of work. Haven’t had a update or new look for a modern time.Version: 7.6.12

Good for Apple but App is downgradeThe app provides integration with Apple Home kit which is appreciated. However, It is a downgrade from Home Control app which no longer works. There are now more steps required for the same command and toggling between lights or blinds is not intuitive; requiring more time. I am told an upgrade to this app is coming in June. Would be good for Lutron to confirm if that is the case..Version: 7.4.1

Needs WorkThe app does what it is supposed to do, allows you to control your lights..... I will give it that. But the layout & the graphics leave me lost for words to describe how bad they actually are. It is difficult to navigate, is not intuitive at all & has a monochromatic color scheme that is almost offensive. That’s the best you can do!?.Version: 6.0

BetterUpdate: i found if i delete the timers i made before the last update and recreate them, vacation mode works better. turning on vacation mode for my lights seems to automatically turn the thermostat on away mode. this is a bit annoying, we should be able to manage the devices separately. ————- i have some light timers scheduled for vacation mode, others scheduled for normal mode. when i set myself to normal mode, both the normal and vacation schedules are followed. other than that, good app!.Version: 6.0
