Learn Japanese! - Kanji for Negative User Reviews

ErrorsNot sure why my original review was deleted but I’ll try again. I’m giving this app 1 star because it is full of errors in Kanji pronunciation. This app could easy be a 5 out of 5 because the learning system is engaging but there is nothing worst than learning incorrect readings and vocabulary. Until these issues are addressed and corrected I do not recommend this app for beginners. I’ve been double checking all new words but if I’m not sure how much longer I will use this app. Edit: More negatives. I’m now experiencing crashing at N3 lesson 37 and I have been noticing that the vocabulary for the levels are wrong for example I am learning 一番 in the N3 but this is actually a N5 word. I’ve noticed many of these. Very disappointing..Version: 1.1.5

Was once great app, broken by the developerHaving tried a lot of similar apps, found this one by far the most practical and methodical way to memorise. Not without its faults, for example, the vocabulary gives in most cases only one meaning of the word, and of course it just doesn’t work like that with 日本語. Inconsistent performance with some of the radicals (writing practise), you need to do it at a certain speed or it will register an error. No settings button. But… All of it is a history for me. After several months of relying on the app and making a steady progress, the developer decided to roll out a series of update. Very minor improvements were traded for the stability of the app, and it seems my history just vanished: while it still shows what Kanjis I have already ‘mastered’, the most valuable feature - Past Review Due is gone. Without it, a great app became just rubbish, and I regret paying money for it. Sent an email to the developer but no changes and no feedback..Version: 1.4.21

Good but please FIX some word meaningsKanji is a good app. It helps me retain a lot more information and has improved my kanji recognition skills. Only downside: please oh please fix some definitions that don’t use the correct kanji based on the shown definition. Example; 留める should be ´to detain’ ... not ´to stop’. 明ける ´s definition should not simply be ´to open’ ....that’s another kanji for that specific meaning. Etc etc....Version: 1.3.32

Why is there so many blank entries in this app?I love this app and it was great to get started. But the further you get they just show you a symbol with pronunciation, and even some of the multiple choices are blank. I’ve emailed the email they provide and they never get back to you. Shame..Version: 1.3.30

Several mistakesThis is great for learning kanji, however, the 読み仮名 (yomigana) has several mistakes. i'm only halfway through N3, so i can only imagine the rest of the lessons being littered with mistakes. would be a great app if i didn't have to check every word to see whether it's correct or not..Version: 1.0.16

Writing recognition kinda sketchySome words I’ve found relentlessly hard to pass in hand writing. 後 and 週. I know the stroke order and direction but it just fails on certain strokes. I’ve just resorted to turning off writing..Version: 1.4.18

Shouldnt be so priceyGreat app but too expensive.Version: 1.5.11

In-app purchase does not workFrustrating. In-app purchase for level 2 doesn't start level 2, restore purchases crashes the app or does nothing at all....Version: 1.0.12

[UPDATE] re:Old Readings GoneAs I progress through the application, which was pretty decent when I first started to use it, that it is truly lacking. DO NOT BUY LEVEL 5 (N1). Very few of the characters are able to be written. You might as well save yourself the money and just make flash cards on Anki because it is the same for the majority of the N1 words. It is very disappointing. ——————————————————— I have started to notice, but I think that many of the old readings are gone. For example, there used to be 漢 for おとこ, but only reading now is かん. Similarly, the developer also removed 社’s やしろ, and there is no longer the reading of “かかえる” for 抱える. I would like to request that the author bring these readings back or at least make available some list of them on their website. It is hard to trust this app as much as I did before when many of the old readings are gone. I wonder if it still even teaches that なる can be written, albeit rarely, as 成る. Honestly, I am pretty disappointed in these changes. It is still a decent way to learn, but I can’t give it 4 stars anymore. I chose 3 because I rounded up from 2.5. If the developer can fix what they erased, I would really appreciate it..Version: 1.4.36

Excellent app but...I love this app and it is incredibly useful and teaches kanji in a great way. I plan on using if for the next few years. However I have looked up all the kanji on the review screen and can only see 1703 kanji. I thought that the app provided all 2136 ‘daily use’ kanji. There may be some reason for this that I am not aware of but after emailing this feedback I have got no response. I am happy to leave a five star review if I get a response to this..Version: 1.4.35

App crashed and lost all progressThe app does work well for learning Kanji stroke order, but after using it for several weeks and having worked through all of N5 and nearly a quarter through N4, the app began to stop working. At first the app would load but none of the Kanji would appear (there would just be a blank space), but then not even the app would open at all soon after. Only after deleting the app and reinstalling can I open it again, but now I’ve lost all my progress… which is really annoying. My other problem with the app generally is that you can’t practice writing words with two or more kanji. You can select them from a multiple choice list but I think that makes it too easy. For just learning the stroke order of one kanji at a time it is very good. It’s a shame there’s no way to save progress if you have to delete the app though..Version: 1.5.3

The app design and concept are great and for the most part work really well…However, there are STILL some characters with errors that you will get stuck on endlessly and have no choice but quit the lesson. I have tried updates, removing the screen protector on my iPhone and reported these issues numerous times. Perhaps add a skip option..Version: 1.5.0

IssueI downloaded the app because I loved your Japanese! app however when I tried to buy the rest of the lessons it wouldn’t let me unless I bought the lessons separately if you have a way to fix this then please let me know. Thanks.Version: 1.3.25

Big shameThis would be so comprehensive and a one stop shop were it not for the lack of audio everywhere. All those Kanji and no complementary audio so you at least learn how to pronounce it too... big big shame. I was prepared to pay as I have done for the kana app by the same developer but this won't do. Sorry..Version: 1.0.7

CrashesThe app is great BUT...the crashes really make it useless. In my case so far only crashing on level 3- lesson 37. I have sent an email to the support but not sure there is such thing either. Hope on the next update the issues to be somehow miraculously resolved..Version: 1.1.6

Can you count to four?Because that's all this offers before the in app purchasing comes up - to learn all the other kanji you'll need. ハウェルぺブルスはとてもふとっているです。( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).Version: 1.0.12

First refund request everNearly threw my iPad at the wall. Insanely, predictably broken. Super effective at most kanji, but as soon as, say ‘degree’ or ‘summer’ or whatever else comes up, know that you will fail and fail with zero feedback as to why until you quit the app out of frustration..Version: 1.5.17

Great potential, still a little buggyThere are several things I like about this app: the ability to practice writing, the combination of kanji and vocab, and the ability to pick and choose what kanji to learn, and the SRS function. However, the writing review is still so buggy it can be frustrating…it accepts some characters easily, but others, it’s impossible to get right, even if you are tracing it 10 times. I think it would be good if you could write your answer, then submit it, and then have an option to override an “incorrect” response if the app doesn’t recognize that you put the correct strokes. I know you can turn off writing practice but I think it’s one of this app’s best features. It would also be cool if you could search for a specific kanji and do the lesson for it, since I’m mainly using it to learn kanji I see in books I’m reading. But you can also look it up by JLPT level..Version: 1.4.38

Useful, but not perfectI’m a novice who was roughly at an N5 level a few years back and have started re-teaching myself what I forgot. Overall I find this app useful, but I have issues. It has definitely helped me refresh the kanji I knew and filled in some gaps. My big issue is that the app is a bit ruthless when you screw up a writing challenge. If you flub a stroke (or your stylus is not read properly) it immediately spoils the answer and just gives you the kanji to trace. It would be nice to have an optional 3 strike system before it gives you an answer. Even with a stylus you will mess up strokes by accident. Half the time I know I messed up, and just need a redo. I don’t need the app to bottle feed me the whole kanji for a minor error, it’s very annoying. As mentioned in other comments, onyomi and kunyomi are not explicitly stated. I also find some of the recordings to be a bit rough/unpleasant. But overall it gets the job done. In general the app is simple and straight forward. I like that it is organized by JLPT levels. I like that I can see all the kanji I learned at a glance (although this screen can be buggy) and how well I am doing at a character. I think despite its issues it’s worth using, but it needs some adjustment..Version: 1.5.11

Great app but way too strictIn my opinion the completion points is too strict and there is inherent problems with the design of it. For example, you may need to complete 1-3 tasks consecutively to get completion score. At any point whether it’s the first or not, it you fail you have to continue to the end and you get awarded nothing. This is what I mean with the design being inherent problems. No one wants to finish something they already failed. Should be awarded on completion of each task, really stupid you can fail the first one but you have to still continue to get 0 score lol. Still a great app tho, wish they changed this though..Version: 1.3.32

Nice looking app but has some issuesVery streamlined app and I like the way that the lessons are organized. Though I’ve noticed that when trying to write certain Kanji, my writing will always get marked wrong even though I know I’m writing it correctly. The only way to pass these lessons is to turn off the writing feature, which I don’t want to do :( Also I noticed with the most recent update to my app, all of the Level 1 lessons have disappeared! If I tap into Level 1 I just see a blank screen. Three stars for now because I like this app but these issues limit how usable it is for me..Version: 1.4.25

Great app for Kanji studySimple minimal design. Remembers which Kanji you need to work on. Uses frequency learning method. Inclusion of kanji compound words as you go is great for reinforcement. However, Please fix the meaning for 直る (no pun intended), and maybe curate the meanings a bit more. It would also help to list a couple of meanings for the ambiguous Kanji. Developer seems to be getting on top of the many bugs that plagued this app for the last few months. However, automatic review is still broken for me. Kanji review list does not update. I asked developer about this many times to no avail..Version: 1.4.34

Could be amazing except for the errorsI would love to give this app a 5 star review. It is extremely useful as a tool for memorization and I have been using it as a way to brush up my Japanese and learn some new grammar. If you are doing the same, this may be a fantastic app for you. HOWEVER, be aware that it is full of errors. There are mistakes in pronunciation, completely missing syllables from words, and odd translations for certain words. I even found a completely broken lesson in N3. I tried to notify the company about the issue with the broken lesson but have not received a response in over a month since I contacted them. I will still keep using the app but until they fix the issues with it I can’t give it my full endorsement..Version: 1.3.32

Good but could be so much better if they responded to user feedbackThe concept is really great as a reinforcement for learning elsewhere. However there are many incorrect readings which have not been updated even after providing repeated feedback. There are also repeat crashes on certain levels and inlong review sessions..Version: 1.3.1

Steals your moneyBought it yet it remained locked saying I had to pay, I tried again and it says I already paid, then crashes....Version: 1.0.12

Was great at first.....I bought this because the layout was super simple and it was very easy to use. The only problem is that whoever made this does NOT know proper stroke order with kanji. I would say 3/10 kanji have wrong stroke order.....which to me says that even if I get every question/stroke order right, I would only get a 70% at best when taking an actual test that has correct stroke orders on it. I graduated with a degree in Japanese Studies, and have been living in Japan for 6+ years now, and I can tell you this app was clearly not doubled-checked by a Japanese person of any kind it seems. I have brought it to many of my Japanese friends and coworkers and they have said the same thing. The app was most likely created by someone who is British, or from that neck of the woods. I say that because the words used when labeling kanji are obviously from someone who uses those “proper” words. That wasn’t a problem at all to be honest (in fact it was very interesting to hear the British version of those words), but it shows to me that they were more focused on fancy words instead of an app that helps me with the stroke order of kanji. Which if you ever talk to a Japanese professor, they will tell you stroke order is essential! I feel like I got duped into buying an app that has amazing potential, but falls flat. Needs at least another year of restructuring! Do not recommend!.Version: 1.3.25

Good app with some major flawsThis app is useful overall, but it has some flaws that must be fixed. The big issue is that the app is too sensitive. It often marks you wrong even when you’re right. It’s endlessly frustrating to correctly write a kanji only to have to redo it over and over. It would also be nice if after a few attempts it would give guidance about where you’re going wrong. This app is also not very good with Apple Pencil. Sometimes the pencil bounces slightly on the screen and the app registers that small touch as a stroke for the kanji leading it to mark the answer wrong. It needs to be less sensitive to small bounces so it doesn’t incorrectly mark something wrong (and so people with shaky hands can use the app). The same thing happens when answering the multiple choice questions, it registers a bounce as an answer the proceeds to the next screen and registers the second touch as the answer for that question. It would also be good if it had a setting for Apple pencil so the user could rest their palm on the screen and write more naturally. As it is, it registers my palm as a stroke so I can’t rest my palm on the screen and write naturally..Version: 1.3.26

OK but...Its ok but it makes you pay for the lessons after the first, just use Duolingo or something else thats not this.Version: 1.1.5

Search feature neededThe app would be perfect with a search feature. I am learning kanji in a different order using the marugoto text books, not the JLPT. That is why a search feature is needed. Thanks a lot..Version: 1.3.31

Quick supportOverall the app has been pretty great. It does lack a little in terms of customizing exactly what you want to learn, but overall it’s pretty good and very effective at helping you learn kanji. I do have to add that support has also been very responsive to feedback with problems, being able to patch or so within a day or two of reporting a problem. I would give it more stars but the review part is very unintelligent. It repeatedly only gives you the same kanji and ignores the other ones you haven’t seen in a long time. You’re better off creating your own reviews because the app will never bring them up..Version: 1.4.36

Good but annoyingWhy is the first lesson only the numbers one and two. It’s stupid, people can memorize more than 2 things at a time. Like why not have the first lesson be numbers 1 through 10. Instead of just one and 2, it makes no sense. And it is way to repetitive, by the time this app is done teaching you numbers, 6 year old kids in Japan would already be learning basic sentence structure. And there shouldn’t be hardset guidelines on how we draw the kanji I’ll draw them how I want to draw them you can’t have my progress reset just because I didn’t draw it exactly the way you wanted me to. Fix these flaws then I’ll rate this app four or 5 stars as it is good at teaching kanji..Version: 1.3.32

Good start, needs considerable polishI like the concept of repeated reinforcement and SRS, however there are some issues important for serious students. The pronunciation is machine generated, and ordinarily this should be ok, but the implementation here is poor - words with small tsu or ending in u are not voiced properly making for distraction. Worse there are some words that are wrong like homework which is shown as yadodai. There are some other similar issues. Right now there’s a crash that I can’t overcome. Developer is not responsive to my many feedback mails. Despite all this, I have high hopes for this app, and hope the developer tends to these issues..Version: 1.1.4

Great app for rote memorizationI debated whether to give this app a three or four star rating, because it really is excellent at what it does, which is teach you kanji by rote memorization. I decided on three stars because the app is seriously lacking in one respect - namely, any kind of explanation of the kanji and their elements. For example the character for six, roku, is pretty simple. So is the character for father, chichi. But then you get to the character for school, ko, and the left hand element is a vertical stroke and the right hand element looks like a combination of roku and chichi. But no explanation of what the elements mean and why they are combined in that way to create the new character and its meaning. So although the app is lovely and a pleasure to use I feel like it’s not providing enough info to truly understand kanji..Version: 1.4.35

Crashing after latest updateCrashes right after selecting any level. It went from being an amazing kanji learning app to a completely useless one..Version: 1.5.12

Dev is amazingHello there is still the problem with スピード違反 and it is also almost impossible to write 羽 and 留まる, thanks for the fix!.Version: 1.5.16
