If it was a paid app, not all of these scammy people would sign up and pay to annoy others. Next, the search is very flexible and you can find your ideal match quite easily. But unless you're totally against system matches you won't be using it too much. The matches you get automatically are the best you'd get. I stopped using the search ages ago, just checked out the matches daily and got on fine. Lastly, the paid features. Did they boost my dating? Sure!
