LayR-Multi Timbral Synthesizer for Positive User Reviews

SpidericemidasThis synth app is a dream come true for me, and I never expected something like this to happen on the iOS platform! This synth excels in making every type of sound you’d want from a synth - solid fat basses, searing leads, evolving pads and textures, lush keys, special effects. Sounds are warm, rich and alive, further enhanced by the high quality on board reverb and delay. The powerful sequencer is a generous inclusion for making complex patterns. Your own imagination is the only limit when using this synth app. A joy to program and create with! A million thanks to Andy!.Version: 1.2.4

Worth a lot moreWow the sounds out of this are incredible. It’s deep but you are getting your money’s worth out of this. It’s breaking my brain thinking about how they got this doing what it does..Version: 1.3.3

One of the bestBuy this and lose all your free time. But you’ll be having fun..Version: 1.2.4

LayR is awesomeLayR is fantastic and keeps getting better with every update. A great way to spend a few hours outside the space-time continuum. The sounds are superb and the multitrack ARP is a revelation. Pair this with a drum machine and you have an instant trance machine. Great stuff !.Version: 1.0.7

Was hesitant at first, but now I LOVE this POWERFUL synth!!!I finally ended up buying this one about 2 weeks ago I think. Was very hesitant because there's no manual and not really any in-depth tutorial videos out there. You're more or less on your own. That being said, the in-app help overlays are usefull... and once you spend a few hours with it, it's not quite as daunting as I initially thought. Not to say that I'm anywhere near proficient with this one yet. And certainly no where near as masterful as Brice and RedSky have proven the app capable of. But, I'm slowly getting there. A couple little nearly obvious tips that have helped me our are such... because I have an Air 2 and not a Pro (yet) ;) I immediately turned off the "iPad Pro Layout" switch in LayR's settings. This was a mistake. The layout fits fine on a regular iPad (though some items are a bit smallish) works fine. If you turn off the iPad Pro Layout, you're getting the iPhone layout that has you doing more multi-page swiping, etc. If you leave it in iPad Pro layout mode it allows you to see pretty much everything on one screen. Once I did this it was much easier for me to stay focussed and not get as confused. The iPhone layout is well done for a small screen, but not if you're not familiar with the app at all yet. Got a lot further along the learning curve by merely going through the presets and dialing parameters down and back up again to hear the changes. I started with the most complex Performance presets first, but I think it'd make more sense to start with the simplest ones first instead. LayR's arp/event sequencer is significantly more than meets the eye with regard to potential. I don't completely understand it myself yet, but I'd figured out some of the midi cc in-app controlling that can be done. A good in-depth demo video of the Arp/Event sequencer would be a huge help. At first, I was considering getting a refund on this one. Mostly due to the fact that without much instruction, I didn't think I'd ever be able to get over the learning curve hump. But now, only 2 weeks later... I open LayR up nearly every day and learn a little bit more. It's definitely a keeper. Highly Recommended :).Version: 1.0.3

Great SynthBought to gem when it was very first released - great sound - consistent updates and loads of new presets added. THANKS!.Version: 1.0.7

Great! As good as most VA desktop synths. This rocks!.Version: 1.3.2

Almost too good for iOS.This synth is so powerful and amazing sounding. I wish there was a vst/au version as so I can run it on my mbp!.Version: 1.3.1

Endless Exploration! This synth has rich sounds that will blow you away! Being able to build with layers opens up a huge number of opportunities that will allow you to create some incredibly intricate sounds. Highly recommended!.Version: 1.0.7

Unique and magicalThis is a very deep synth that seems almost unlimited in its potential. It’s main strength is creating lush and complex textures and it’s loaded with fantastic presets, especially the ones created by Brice. I can see myself using this a lot..Version: 1.2.1

What a synth should be.LayR's supplied sounds are so good and the app itself so easy to navigate and to play with that it makes one want to experiment. What I'm finding is that the sounds themselves make me come up with different melody ideas. 100% recommended with no reservations..Version: 1.0.7

Over priceThe only problem with this app is the high price of it..Version: 1.2.4

Keeps getting better!!!!This is the synth app you want if you can’t be bothered with creating your own patches. There are a bunch of great ones..Version: 1.0.7

Insanely Sick 5⭐️ Are To Little !!!!!!!Unlimited Multi Layers CPU Friendly Out Of 5⭐️ I Give It 7⭐️.Version: 1.45

Simply awesomeIf like me you collect lots of synth apps this one stands out as one of the best you will be amazed how complex the sounds can be while programming them is a breeze you just can’t help loving the sounds you can make this one is a keeper.Version: 1.3

As always, my reliable go-to instrumentLayer (and Moog Music’s Model 15 with everything) is what time has shown to be all I need (I have all decent synths on iOS). Add imagination and an aural infinity is heard and begins an unWorldly creation. Thank you!.Version: 1.45

Great app, imagine if it also had a built in sampler!!!!This app is great, one of my favs, got it when it first came out when I had an Air 2. I bought an IPad Pro 2020 last year and now I can use it to its full potential and I love it even more. Just a thought....but imagine if it had a built in sampler too with pitch and Time shift....🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯....it would be the one ring to rule them all!!!!.Version: 1.45

UnbelievableThis developer is seriously nuts, good nuts. A one of a kind app just became way more amazing. Audio Unit!!!! Are you joking? Wow. Oh boy. Yippee etc. Thanks for making Layr. Its nice to have such an incredible and fun app on IPAD..Version: 1.2

Superb Sounding but Poor LatencyThis synth sounds amazing but on my iPad 7 I can only get two instances of it into Cubasis and three into AUM before the crackling and popping starts. Author, Please test this yourself..Version: 1.44

One of the finestThis synth is somehow under the radar but it is really one of the more complete iOS synths. The sound is dynamic, edgy and deep. The interface is tricky at first but starts to make sense after some use. The sounds you can achieve here, you really start to forget you have other synths in general, it’s so unreal. The presets, particularly the ones by Brice Beasley are slick and very well articulated. And now...AuV3! Must buy..Version: 1.2

Great… But…This is a great app, but being slightly visually impaired I cannot see the writing on the buns or even the symbols that good… The voice over functionality needs to be integrated better. Everything needs to talk and I do mean everything because this is a very intricate up with a lot of bells and whistle's! Also a manual would help… For the life of me I don't understand why there is not one but it is what it is. I was thinking about getting my money back, but I will give this app a chance and hopefully they will integrate the voice over functionality better, hopefully….Version: 1.0.3

Just PhenomenalThis really is a brilliant piece of work. Absolutely superb sounding and beautiful looking synth. Simply magnificent. Five stars once AU can be implemented. Can't wait for the mac version too (hint) 😀.Version: 1.0.2

Creativity InspiringTotally awesome in its depth and ability to create very complex, rich sounds in an interface that is remarkably intuitive for the power that it has. Plenty of great presets to get you started, too. Highly recommended!.Version: 1.0.8

So deep and richOne of those unique and special synths on the iOS platform. I rank it up there with Moog Model 15, Sunrizer, Animoog, Zeeon and Mood. The latest round of patches are just stellar. Really love how quickly this synth has evolved. Great work👊🏼™.Version: 1.0.7

Great sounds, endless layers... one small problemThe keys are too small!!! Great when you're hooked up to midi but when you're on the go and want to write… These tiny keys are impossible and I have small hands. or is there a way to stretch them in length? Widening helps, but they are just way too short. otherwise, great sounds.Version: 1.45

Impressive, deep synthOn the iPad I’ve mostly seen emulations or experimental type synthesizers that while good are of limited function. LayR is one of the most functional synthesizers I’ve encountered not only as an iPad user but as a working musician. The sound itself is quite good. While not a perfect analog emulation it has a sound that can go retro while maintaining a modern aesthetic. There are enough editing capabilities and modulations to make a considerably huge production on the iPad courtesy of the onboard 16 step sequencer. Beyond that it works fine in several of the sequencers available separately. I would welcome a step sequencer with more steps, perhaps 32 or 64 would be nice. It would certainly makeLayR even more formidable. Refreshingly LayR will work both for modern and older school and endeavors. It’s flexibility is something not seen before on this platform. The onboard sequencer, modulation flexibility, and synth engine capable of using up to 16 midi channels makes for a very useful tablet based system to consider for any audience; professional, home-based, even possibly studio. One of my concerns is how hot it runs my iPad Air 2. The iPad gets very hot when LayR is being used. So far my polyphony expectations haven’t been daunted. The website says do not expect more than 120 notes for this device. That is not a big limitation. Most hardware multitimbral synthesizers, yes I understand that they are mostly workstations and mostly sample based, do not offer much better overall polyphony then LayR which means that at this price, on this platform, it is without question a fantastic bargain. I will be trying this on some studio productions soon. Haven’t listened to it through good equipment expect it will do extremely well..Version: 1.3

Prime Example of iOS innovationSimply one of the best synthesis apps.Version: 1.0.7

Wish it had favorites tagging for presetsI love this synth's sound and programming capabilities, 5 stars no doubt. The one thing missing is to be able to tag presets. Right now I am saving my favorites in a dedicated folder. Works but is tedious..Version: 1.45

Maybe should be 5* even.Whoever gave this 2* is not understanding this. I use Omnisphere in desktop which is the power synth to beat them all. This is similar but without the immense parameters of Omnisphere...which isn’t surprising because it eats CPU on a powerful PC so an iPad would likely melt. So the LayR people have done a fantastic job. Beautiful GUI, if a little cluttered for my liking. Could do with some FX IAPs to get the synth engines morphing with some unsynth sounds. Brilliant though. Love it..Version: 1.3

RemarkableOutstanding! Full of rich presets that are fun to tweak. Very easy to create new patch’s by layering preset sounds from the large library that is provided. My hat is off to you..Version: 1.3

StunningThis is the future of iOS synths it sets a very high standard. blown away.Version: 1.0.6

Wow! What a synth!Just buy this synth. I have tons of iOS synths and as others have said this is probably the best sounding. Developer is still updating it. Sure it’s cpu hungry but you can run on the older engine on older systems and knowing this there are many workarounds. Best $25 I’ve ever spent on a synth..Version: 1.45

A powerhouse of a synthTruly one of the most insanely powerful, deep synths around, iOS or otherwise. This beast will keep you busy for a long, long time. Highly recommended..Version: 1.0.7

From Another WorldI had been using LayR from the beginning and is just amazing the new Cinematics bank is splendid. Thank you so much for making our music different. Brice Beasley is a genius!!!!.Version: 1.0.4

Unbelievably Good!!!I'm addicted to this app. The experimental options are endless. Can't wait for the next update with more LayR's!.Version: 1.0.3

Amazingly Deep, Wonderful SoundLayR is one of the top iOS synthesizers with boundaries only limited by your imagination. Deep synthesis, awesome building blocks of instruments allows you to craft luscious and moving soundscapes. Don't wait, click purchase now..Version: 1.0.7

Sounds Epic, but...Unless you’re a serious, and I mean SERIOUS, sound designer then this synth probably ain’t for you. It’s so deep you could spend a whole day creating a single patch. If, on the other hand, you’re happy scrolling through and playing great sounding presets, this will make you smile. Some of its presets sound so epic they could be used on a film score. Personally, I like to quickly create and tweak my sounds. It’s just too deep for the casual user like me..Version: 1.2.1

Simply magnificentHaven’t had much time to play with it yet, but right off, I found it easy to navigate. Kudos to the Third Parties for their sound banks. Very inspiring, and a fair representation of what this synth can do. $25... grumble, grumble... But, no regrets! After years of paying 100 times that for hardware synths, how can we possibly complain? Cheers! ✌🏻😎🎹🌴🌞.Version: 1.3.2

Amazingly goodAn app chock full of innovative features and capable of some stunning sounds and musical performances. LayR is breathtaking. WOW.Version: 1.0.2

SuperbBrilliant App, sounds amazing. Very well implemented. Good midi options..Version: 1.0.2

My favorite synth! It’s like Lego of synths. You create a sound using one layer, then another, and another... they can then all play together creating a completely different new sound. You can duplicate layers which is useful if you want to slightly tweak the copies. Each layer is a synth and I love that all synth controls (of individual layers) are entirely on single page. You don’t need to have like a 100 of synths to make something good sounding, even a single one can sound great. But this layering allows you to create something that’s impossible anywhere else. You basically build sound character piece by piece. Experiment with adding different textures, maybe add percussive elements, or more spacious pad-like feel. There’s a mixer so you can solo/mute and adjust volume for each. It’s not as complex as you might think. There are a LOT of features but you can learn them as you go. No need to learn everything before you can begin making great instruments. Everything can be controlled by midi, like external controller or another app. So for example, you could modulate some knobs using Rozeta app or ApeMatrix app, etc. I mean, if you want some *extra* modulation options, each synth already comes with 2 LFOs. And of course I have to mention sound fidelity. A synth should sound good with all fx off. Then when you add fx on top it’ll sound even better. No matter how much I mess with LayR I keep getting more and more original sounds that can actually be used in my tracks. Very thankful for such an amazing musical instrument! To the dev: Only one request, please make the presets rearrangeable. They use slots, and when you revisit an instrument you’ve been working on and make a variation of it so you have additional preset but it’s similar to original, it would be very nice to have them next to each other..Version: 1.3.3

Too few starsI want to give it TEN! Easy to use and program, sounds great and I really like being able to choose from two sizes of GUI depending on the size of my screen (or the tiredness of my eyes) Bravo! ~~~~ P.S. I forgot to add, even if you don't program, the performances and arp/sequencer are more than worth the price and encourage experimentation (a.k.a. Fun!).Version: 1.0.5

Words can’t describe the experienceI was on the fence with this one for a few days because I prefer making music on my Mac. I hadn’t seen an update in a while so I was sceptical until I saw a post from the developers on a forum mentioning an upcoming release. Decided to take the plunge and I’m lost for words. Going through the presets and seeing what this thing can do had me wanting to leave a review right away. 2hrs later here I am... I’m amazed at the power and flexibility. The low CPU usage considering how many instruments and layers some of these performances have. With a good pair of headphones I was in heaven. I feel like I have dozens of song ideas from the inspiration. For what this thing is capable of I’m grateful it’s only $36 CAD. Now I just need to get my hands on an iPad Pro for more screen real estate. Would love to see this on my Mac. 😉😉 Andy & Jan.... Thank you!.Version: 1.3

AmazingThis is such an interesting, powerful app, but also very robust and versatile - love it..Version: 1.0.7

Excellent, comprehensive, but complex synthThis synth app is very complex, deep and sounds wonderful. I know that the developer has been very busy extensively updating it for some time and I have had to update my review to reflect this supreme effort. Although it is a very advanced synth for iOS, my main problem with it is the overall default presentation when the app starts up. We are faced with a mixer instead of a synth panel, with very tiny controls that are difficult to use. I know this is a multi-layer monster, but it would be so much better to be presented with a synth panel of the first (or last used) layer initially, with the ability to hop between the other panels without having to go to the mixer screen until actually required. In addition, it still does not save (either globally or with the preset) the keyboard velocity switch setting. As I always play with velocity, I have to set this on EVERY TIME I start the app. I know it sounds trivial, but it is an annoyance and most other apps save these settings between sessions. I am sure that this would be a 5-star app with these mods in place. However, I would fully recommend this to anyone who loves to play and program synths..Version: 1.3

Sounds amazingThe interface are beautiful and intuitive. All the features are also well documented too. Definitely one of the best sounding synth I found for iOS devices. I can tell a lot of thoughts put into developing this app..Version: 1.3.2

One of the best!I was a bit cautious at first to get this as I've bought a few lemons in the past. But... LayR is undoubtably one of the finest iOS synthesisers on the App Store. I’m struck by its elegant UI and deep layering capabilities. Initially I thought that there would have to be a catch with the sheer number of layers possible, but the sound quality is there and with some functionality that takes it beyond just another synth. It also has an astonishing level of polyphony to be utilised. It has has audio-rate modulation up to 10khz which is absolutely awesome for FM sounds. It also has a pseudo sample and hold LFO with slew rate. This gets it into very interesting soundscape territory. It’s early days but I think LayR has an extremely wide sweet spot for analog sounds. If there’s an achilles heel to to all this power and layRing, it's that it pretty complex and I'm not sure when I'm going to find the time to sit down and really get stuck in. Luckily there are some excellent sound banks included which makes it totally useful without being a synth programmer. If I was to ask for more, I'd like to be able to adjust the lfo rates with other mod sources - maybe this can be done but I haven't found it yet. I think it would benefit from some IAP effects or wavetable generator. I'd also like to used/drive the step arp/sequencer with other AUs but when I tried I was getting some stuck notes. But if nothing ever gets added it is complete as is..Version: 1.3

Stunningly gorgeous!I bought this app because the description seemed interesting enough. Its layout is a bit different from most or all the other music apps I use so I didn't notice where the factory presets, if there were any, were. After building a few "performances" I was gladly enough hook...........until I stumbled upon the presets! The only words that come to mind are Stunningly Gorgeous! Hooked is an understatement!.Version: 1.0.2

Deep and luscious sounding synthI was hooked the minute I heard the demos for this synth app. The ability to stack layers of sonic yumminess, and have them interact and evolve over time is just remarkable! Certainly capable of producing the most wondrous audioscapes. Highly recommended, and the developer keeps improving it with each update. Wow!.Version: 1.0.7

Top shelfI have not yet come to grips with much of this very deep kit, but one thing is obvious: it sounds spectacular. How an instrument SOUNDS is always #1 priority for my music app purchases. A lot of stuff may be technically deep, but it means nothing if the main event isn't great, and in this case even if the synth wasn't incredibly layered and complex, it would stand out sonically..Version: 1.0.3

Shocking!V. 1.2 is utterly shocking. I hooked my iPad Pro up to my audio system and dug in. As I poked around the new features and presets, I found myself slack-jawed with the old “deer in the headlights” look hanging on my face. The audio quality is so good (even when generating massively dense and complex sounds) it will make you consider going celibate just to spend more time with this instrument. I was so stunned that I just had to put it away (for a few minutes, anyway). Once I caught my breath I got right back into it. Imagine having something like 24 (or more) Yamaha CS-80s all stacked up and under your direct control. Yeah ...that’s about what its like. Did I mention the sound quality ...oh ...yeah. I did. In one way, this is a complex beast. But in another, it is fairly simple. The complexity comes largely from the duplication of basic synthesizers into layers and layers into performances. It is easy to get overwhelmed with what happens when you begin combining all of these elements. But ultimately the synth voice architecture and the way LayR manages its various levels is eminently logical and clear. The new performance features are fantastic. Patch management is easy and logical. Modulation matrix adds new flexabilty. The arpegiator was already great; now it’s better. The new manual is a great addition and finally, labeling the individual synthesizer controls was a feature that was badly needed. With all of these new additions, LayR is basically uh ...well, I guess I have to say it: a perfect keyboard synthesizer. Is there a way to award 10 stars on the ap store?.Version: 1.43

Massive !Hands down, THE best synth app available. Love the update with the manual and ability to zoom in..Version: 1.2.1

A very musical appI still have a long way to go to fully explore what LayR has to offer, so other reviews will give you a more detailed sense of what it is. But, what I want to emphasise is how musically inspiring this is - everything I make (however good it is) has a musical character that is very different to what I create using other tools. Much of this is down to its clever sequencer, but is also aided by a great sound library. I’d love it if it had some kind of song mode structure to link sequences together, but really I do have other tools to do that, and to expect more is just me being greedy. Thoroughly recommended..Version: 1.45

Just get it!!!No review can describe how sublime this is....Version: 1.0.7

Unbelievable so.... goodLayR is so different than other synths. It is truly multi-timbral. Assign as many layers (each layer is a complete synth) to or from as many midi channels as you like. Split a single or multiple controllers as many times as you like with complete control. The depth is strong in this one. And a manual, a really good one! A different approach to coding makes the unlimited layers possible. Kudos..Version: 1.3.3

Excellent synth..thanks for cool updateReally appreciate developers continued support of product. Wow.Version: 1.0.7

Incredible and extremely versatile for sound creationWOW! This synth app is incredible and extremely versatile for sound creation. If you have any familiarity with subtractive synthesis techniques, you will be quite comfortable from the outset with LayR. And if you are not, once you understand the fundamentals of the user interface (which is explained quite nicely in the built-in manual and help overlays), it is a very user-friendly starter kit for learning and honing your skills. The developer has posted some excellent tutorial videos on YouTube if you want to get a sense of what it is capable of before you buy. You literally build layer upon layer of synthesizers to construct an "Instrument" and then you combine multiple instruments to create a "Performance". Each synthesizer layer has the same components, so once you know how to program one, you can easily add as many as you need to create your own unique sound. The user interface can be switched between an iPhone-friendly version where the synth engine is split across several screens or an iPad version where all the synth controls are available on a single page. The features of this synth engine that make it so powerful (IMHO) are: dual morphing oscillators (plus a noise generator), three independent envelope generators - one of which is dedicated to the final layer amplitude with the other two able to control the oscillators and/or filter modulation, two LFOs plus a third "random" modulator (similar to traditional sample-and-hold), dual filters that can be run either in parallel or serial and can be independently set to low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and notch. There is also a quite sophisticated arpeggiator, which I haven’t fully got my mind around so I’m hoping the developer posts a tutorial video soon. The envelope generators are the usual attack/decay/sustain/release with an optional pre-envelope delay time. What is unique about them is that the delay, attack, decay and release times can be set to anything from instantaneous all the way up to 100 seconds each. So you can have some incredibly long envelopes for evolving drones, pads, etc. Additionally, they can be configured to loop as well as synchronize to the built-in clock. Similarly, the LFOs are very unique for the iOS synth world. There are 10 different oscillator shapes for each of the two LFOs and the frequency can be set to anything from 0.001 cycles per second (i.e. almost 17 minutes per cycle!) all the way up to 10,000 Hz (i.e. high end of the audio range) plus sync to the clock. The LFOs can be used to modulate oscillator frequency, morphing, phase, filter cut-off, filter mix, pan and amplitude. So, in addition to using them like the envelopes to create very long morphing drones they can also be used to make some wild frequency modulation and similar effects when dialed up to the higher end of their frequency ranges. In the case of LayR, “low frequency” oscillator is quite a misnomer. This is extremely powerful and something that very few iOS synths allow. Virtually every control can be mapped to a MIDI controller, including via bluetooth software and hardware devices, and also be selectively linked across multiple layers in an instrument so tweaking a control on one layer will simultaneously change the control on any linked layers. There are some truly outstanding presets included with the app, including a bank of instruments with tutorial examples. All of the presets (almost 200 “instruments” and a similar number of “performances”) can be dissected for a fantastic learning experience and modified to build your own sounds. Presets can be stored either in the app or uploaded (and downloaded) to iCloud (or Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc). There is a user forum on the developer’s website where you can get help (the developer is quite responsive), share patches, insight, suggestions, etc. All in all, while this app is at the upper end of the typical iOS synth price range, it is certainly well worth the cost and a pleasure to work with..Version: 1.0.3

Iamhousemachines top 3Just mega mega huge awesome design palette watch the cpu.Version: 1.3

BrilliantWhen I first started out on modular synthesizers, I could never have foreseen something like this. It’s a universe of possibilities, layers, combinations. Very highly recommended and a bargain at many times the price. Well done..Version: 1.0.7

Great app but a bug in macroWhen using batch macro mode I’m trying converting a AIFF that has a loop to a wav file however, the loop details are not carried across. If I manually do this and select one aiff at a time , open and save, the loop is saved with the wav file.Version: 1.45
