Where’s my data...It was nice while it worked. However it appears all of my data is gone. On my iPad pro In the non-subscription app, everything says “Downloading”. In the subscription app, everything says “Downloading”. ON my iPhone it says there’s nothing in iCloud. It does not make me feel any better to find out others have had similar issues, and that the developer basically says on their site that it is not their fault because they have limited visibility into how iCloud works or any iCloud logs. It hurts even more when I see they say that they do not store your data in iCloud - as in iCloud is not a backup service but is only for synchronizing between devices??? Really? That’s why have have 2TB just for syncing between my devices? Anyway - it appears all of my data is gone no matter what I do. All of my other apps update right away - but theirs I can wait hours and it still says “Downloading”. Nice! What a feature! To think I bought the app and less than a month later they changed to subscription - and based on confusing e-mails from them I ended up paying full price again - wonderful - and then to find out they cannot even make sure I still have my data months later. Wonderful! I did not know how good I had it before I used their service. Great markup. Easy to use. And evidently easy to lose all of your data too..Version: 13.1

Subscription...Nope..Version: 19

Not impressedIncredibly faulty.Version: 15.1

DisgustedI paid for this app. Now they’ve updated the app to demand more money to use it. For comparison. You buy a car. Then the dealer visits your house and clamps your wheel preventing you from driving it. Oh but if you pay more money, they’ll gladly remove it for you. Curious what laws say in Ontario about this..Version: 12

0 stars if I could...I brought this for my MacBook and iPhone.... only to find they now want me to pay a subscription... ummm no thanks... I supported you you first started and will never give you another dollar. I use Bear instead for $2 a month not the $6 you want me to now pay.Version: 12.1

Can't help but feel ripped offWhen I bought this app, I paid full price for a full license. Now that the devs have decided they need more money and have switched to a subscription model, my license was taken away. To me, that feels like a rip off, and I really think Apple needs to step in. I would be more than happy to stay with the version of the app that I had bought originally, and forego any updates, but that doesn't seem to be possible. So my $10 for the iOS version went down the drain. I haven't looked at my desktop version. Luckily, I haven't upgraded macs, so it's still installed, so here's to hoping. And to all the apologists squawking back about "the developers need to get paid" and "maybe you don't write enough to need a paid app", well, good points. But the publishers shouldn't have changed pricing models the way they did. I paid full price for an app that no longer works due to a policy change after I'd bought it. Not my fault, and yet here I am without my rightfully purchased license..Version: 13

Worst writing program - renter beware!Terrible app, you’re better off with the free apple note program. I don’t suggest renting this software. WARNING: I lost hours of work, if you value your writing don’t risk it with this painfully bad program!!.Version: 12.3

Great, but search is awkward on iOSDoes the search function on iOS have to be so tedious? Searching for a string of text simply highlights an entire sheet, it doesn’t take you directly to the section. Scrolling through dozens of paragraphs of text in a sheet is incredibly tedious and manual when you want to find a simple error spotted after export..Version: 17

Themes don’t workGreat app, only issue is that coloured themes both default and those that I have downloaded don’t seem to work (on light and dark mode) despite working perfectly on Mac..Version: 21.1

Have to payAs above.Version: 20.2

Used to love it, it no longer works for meI used to love this program and talked about it every chance I got. When they went to subscription model I was a bit annoyed but that’s not why I no longer like the product. At the time they pestered me to upgrade but I’m a practical person and decided to hold out with the original version for as long as I could. I haven’t used it in a while, but now I am trying to use it on my iPad and it just doesn’t work. I can add new sheets but can’t edit anything with touch, I have to use the keyboard attachment with the iPad and use the arrow keys to navigate anywhere in the app. I don’t mind not having new features, but I do mind when things stop working just because I chose to wait on the subscription model. I don’t even know if I do upgrade that this will start working again. Not a fan at the moment. Maybe it’ll work better on my desktop (boo)..Version: 14.5

Now subscription based!!Ridiculous..Version: 12.1

You need 7 dollars to use the app.Why should we need to pay right away without even having the trial? I don’t have enough money on my phone to let me try the trial, so I can’t even know what it’s like to be one of this app’s servants. I think the developers are stuck up and are asking for way to much. It is not even a premium version, so I can’t use the app without paying..Version: 18.5

Crashes constantly. Unreliable.Despite my many crash reports and emails to the development team, Ulysses appears unable to fix the constant crashes and slowness that plague this app. Most crashes do not even trigger the crash report mechanism. Oftentimes the app will not even start because it crashes during startup. Even when it does work, there are constant slowdowns when you switch between apps, the search mechanism does not work properly, and the “external files” mechanism for Dropbox sync is a clumsy UI disaster. It’s a beautiful app and concept, but there is no excuse for their continuing failure to get the basics right. Reliability and speed are the top priorities for a text editor. Nothing else matters until Ulysses fixes those..Version: 16.1

Money wanted before I could startSo downloaded to check it out, apparently one of my kids had before me so I had to pay. Deleted in first 2 min..Version: 18.5

Terrible bug: importing folders from iOS SpotlightI used to like this app, but a bug that started occurring since iOS 12 has forced me to uninstall this app. Specifically, whenever you search a folder from the spotlight, and tap on the Files app result, you would expect the folder to be opened in the Files app, right? But if you have this app installed, it will import the folder and all of its files into Ulysses. This behavior is killing my workflow, now I can't search for folders in spotlight. So I've decided to uninstall the app. Also, I've reached out two times to their support with this problem, and they tell me they are aware of the bug and will be fixing it. Really? When? It's been around 6 months since I reached out and you keep pushing updates but don't of them fixes this annoying issue.Version: 14.5

Ok, I had enough. Canceling subscription today. Can you imagine opening an writing app that you are relying on to do important writing work on an airplane, and it’s not working because you have no internet connection? And it’s not even because it *needs* internet connection, it’s because they don’t want to have any chance that you are cheating them by turning off the wifi. I’ve been frustrated by the constant buggering of this for months now, but not being able to use it on a plane when I’ve already paid is incredibly frustrating. This app has hands down the worst subscription UX of any app that I’ve ever used. Dear app developers, congrats on building a superb writing app, enjoy the money rolling it, and also congrats on ruining what could have been an iconic brand. I’m sure someone else will make a better one..Version: 15.1

It sucksYou literally cant do a single thing without paying for the membership..Version: 22.1

No real trial, cannot edit files in Files app, slow startupSeems like a nice app, but just for some reference, there is no real free trial - you have to agree to a subscription and then have either 3 or 14 days to remember to cancel if you don't like it. Also, the app is extremely slow to start up. I have a brand new iPad Pro that I literally just purchased yesterday and the app took about 30 seconds to get to the UI. There is a black screen with a yellow ball during this time. Not sure what's going on, but this is a lot of friction. Lastly, it does not seem to integrate with the Files app, so I was not able to edit files I have stored there. I guess maybe that's not the purpose of this app, but just FYI that's the deal..Version: 16.1

Money debited during free trialI downloaded this app today for 2 weeks free trial and suddenly AUD21 was debited. Would you explain what it’s for and help me to get paid back?.Version: 20

SubscriptionNo thank you This is a writing app. Subscription model makes no sense..Version: 11.4

Return my money! You are shameless As soon as I purchased your software in full, you announced the annual cost calculation, and the money for the previous software purchase was not returned. Why not grab it? If it is two different versions, why can't the sold out version be used?.Version: 18.5

Yes, it costs money, but if you write a lot, it’s mostly worth itIf all you do is occasionally take notes, this app isn’t worth it. But if you write professionally, this app does a lot of little things to make the writing experience more enjoyable, organized, and efficient. I was annoyed by them switching to a annual recurring model as well, but developing and maintaining software like this is a full-time job, so a low annual fee is the same as doing a yearly oil change on your car. With that said, I don’t think that the improvements to the app since the switch to annual subscription have been very substantive. Some bug fixes here, a new integration there, but it does feel like they are resting on their laurels, or perhaps don’t have great product vision(which is very typical of German companies). I wonder if they are doing any user research. But it’s still the best writing app for professionals until someone else disrupts them..Version: 19.2

It refuses to recognize my printer!!!Oh, this is a good writing app, if a bit confusing... ***I wrote several stories and outlines for more stories, then discovered that this app refuses to work with my Brother Printer. I could not share my stories because they were locked into this app. I just put on parking brakes today; on my subscription because it’s useless to write and not be able to share. Or send to a publisher. I have a WORKING AirPrint printer, but it says “no AirPrint printer”, time after time...and after nearly one year....Im tired of fighting this app. I’ll take my subscription $$$ and some other lucky app (that CAN work with Brother Printers) will have my support. I’m very disappointed..Version: 20.2

Ulysses 21 is terrible. On the blog today they announced the new update for iPad, which was auto-installed for me. They tell us that they've removed swiping actions and consolidated them. Well, where? No explanation. The tutorials still show the old ways to do things. Now the app I use for work on a daily basis is ruined for me and I'll have to spend a significant portion of my day trying to find things I used to be able to pull up in seconds. Bravo—you've made something useless while claiming it's better, without getting any feedback from daily users. I'm sure this is great for people who write as a hobby at coffee shops, but as someone who pays for this app for professional reasons, I wish I could cancel my subscription. ETA: it’s even worse, they didn’t “consolidate” things. They removed functionality. Now the iPad app does even less than the desktop!!!.Version: 21

Too much moneyThis app costs WAY to much, you can’t even write down anything on the app unless you get the subscription..Version: 21.5

App phenomenal, sync fundamentally brokenI’ve been using Ulysses for about a year now. It’s a phenomenal place to write and worth the subscription price. But look at the reviews and you’ll see the same thing. For whatever reason, sync through iCloud periodically doesn’t work. Yes, I have the latest OS on all of my devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone). The problem seems to be that Ulysses doesn’t push through a check into iCloud for updates, sometimes iCloud has to be nudged to check for updates (by deleting an unrelated file in my iCloud Drive). In short, if you plan to use this app on multiple devices you’ll need to check before working on a new device to ensure it has synced before you write anything. If you don’t double check the sync, you _will_ have extremely frustrating sync conflicts. This has been the case over multiple updates to Ulysses and multiple OS updates for the last 12 months. The sync simply doesn’t work reliably..Version: 20

Sync Problem!!!It won’t sync between iPhone and MacBook... ... I have to reinstall the app over and over again to get the synced draft... rather frustrating..Version: 21.4

Bait and payUlysses gets lots of good press from a lot of people. I really wanted to try it. I downloaded the app, and noticed that there was a charge of $48/year (I might be off by a little) if I wanted to sync my material across all devices. I said, well - maybe, but let’s try it first to see if its going to be worth that. No such luck. App loaded. I went through the very brief tutorial, and saw a very simple interface. I tried to create a new document, and that is when I was told that my authorization had “expired” and I needed to pay through the nose now to use the app. Sorry Ulysses, but great press doesn’t get me to pay that much for an app without at least allowing me a try first. There is too much competition for you, and too many different free or already purchased options for me..Version: 22

Please introduce a one time payment tierThe subscription model completely turned me off this app. It’s quite off putting to make it seem like your app is free and having users download it, only for them to find out that they can’t use the app without a subscription. And no, mentioning it in one sentence in the description box isn’t enough, at least make it obvious for users. Thanks, but no thanks!.Version: 13.1

Um?Well it works... But if you pay and the cost is a lot I goes onto a read-only mode so you can't make a draft I would too get it only if your willing to pay 🤪.Version: 15.1

Don’t buy, don’t subscribe. They were already paid full price for this app. Then they updated and demanded a monthly subscription, or the user is locked out! Don't reward this unethical behaviour! Don’t buy, don't subscribe. Take your business to better people..Version: 12.1

Not happyI paid a large amount of money for this app, and now I’m shut out of it completely unless I cough up another 40 bucks a year for a subscription. Sorry, but this is just wrong. Bring out a new subscription version, and let us use the ‘old’ version. Don’t shut paid users out of your app. Will not be paying you another penny..Version: 12

Helpful or hindrance? We are already a family of published writers, my mom writes everything in longhand and I fell into using MS Word as my word processor. With today's world events I decided to get a MacBook Pro laptop and dedicate it to the sole function of being my writing typewriter- no other apps installed but one, my writing page. I gave both Ulysses and Scrivener fair and equal auditions. As a writer my opinion is neither of them is necessary and both of them are too fussy and end up getting in the way more than being useful. My advice is to use a word processor like Word, Pages or similar in its least obtrusive mode for your first and subsequent drafts and when you are ready for and serious about publication have the final draft reviewed, edited and formatted by a professional service or only THEN buy a software tool to assist you. Between Scrivener and Ulysses the former has the edge of offering the writer a more comprehensive toolkit but it's learning curve is daunting. Ulysses loses by their ridiculous decision to be a subscription product. Why? How much could they possibly "improve" a word processor year over year? Plus the fact that they burned me by billing my Apple account for a full year without my knowledge or approval after I already determined I didn't want it and deleted it. It seems they are more interesting in grabbing my wallet than being of any use to me as a writing tool..Version: 19.2

To little for too much $$Again with the subscription model, and for what?? Not mucking futch.......Version: 13.1

Value, yes, but not enough to subThis app does offer value, but not subscription-level value. Sorry, not going to sub to a writing app. It isn't even anything on the level of word processor power or layout design power. Not to mention that subscription models for personal/home users are still onerous even at the best of times..Version: 11.4

No syncing between iPhone and Mac appsI thought this app was beautiful for writing in, I love the word count feature, and I was even willing to pay the subscription fee despite it being more than other similar apps, BUT I am going to switch because the syncing between Mac and iPhone is nonexistent. Whether I use wifi or data, my notes sync sporadically and refuse to stay up to date with what I’ve written from the Mac. It always downloading and occasionally one of my notes will show up in the iPhone app. Makes no sense..Version: 19

Don’t need it and don’t recommend itI was unhappy with the the new pricing model, because the cost seemed out of line with the value I perceived. I looked at what combination of tools for writing and storing information I actually used and enjoyed using. It turned out that Ulysses was in last place in a collection of six Markdown editors. The hierarchical organization is not a good fit for me, as it just slows everything down. With other Markdown editors having implemented folders and hashtags, the Ulysses document model looks increasingly idiosyncratic. I’m amused by people who pretentiously differentiate between “simple Markdown editors” and Ulysses. I write professionally for research and teaching, mostly in LaTex. Ulysses handles LaTex equations badly, but several “simple editors” handle them well. Ulysses is needlessly complicated and expensive for what it does. Update: With COVID-19 and remote learning, I am using **another** Markdown editor which handles LaTEx equations to prepare all lectures, problem sets and solutions. Works very well on iPad for lectures with pdf marked up in real-time. I’m using Markdown more for research, both writing and in meetings. Just not Ulysses..Version: 25

Really?!?!I purchased this app for quite a bit if I am not mistaken, just to have it switch to a subscription model?? Developer, do I get my money back for the app I purchased that is now useless? Everyone beware that the developer uses very shady business practices. Basically bated me, took my money, and then switched and told me I would need to spend more money to use an app I already paid for! Honestly it’s not even a good writing app. The markdown interface is unclear and encumbering at best. No substantial features or updates that justify paying every month for this app. If you want a real writing app (that won’t screw you over) do yourself a favor and buy Scrivener. Much better app, and no shady BS, like monthly subscriptions..Version: 14.5

Want the old notes back! Please!I use this app, every day, all day. And I have used it for 4 years straight. And I loved it. And I write and write. BUT... the new update to notes has ruined my whole routine. Please, please, please give me the option to change it back to the old way. I use to be able to read the whole note by scrolling—not anymore. Now I havre to click it open. I used to be able to—almost without a thought—scroll through my notes and add some scribbles without leaving my train of thought or my main document behind—not anymore! Now I have to have click notes like a pop up (and who likes pop ups! Yuck!). And it makes my main document go out of sight! And then I have to raise my hand all the way to the top right of my screen to close the notes when I’m done. Writing flow and thought flow ruined. Please change it back. Please, please..Version: 20.2

Apples sneaky purchasesAnother app that uses iTunes to scam their money out after free usage to see if you want to buy. You can cancel somewhere but even Apple won’t even tell you if you forget or don’t read all the information. These apps to give you 3060 or 90 day free trial should always always ask you for your credit card after those days are done. These apps very very simple apps and the really retarded ones are making millions and billions along with Apple through this process I am going to do anything nonstop try to figure out how to fix this. My little nieceOr on my phone play a simple game clicked on an app that she would like some stupid Phone app and I have been charged twice for $49 in the last two years and didn’t even know about it 100 bucks for a app that I never even knew I had all my God I can’t think of anything stupider That my money could’ve been spent other than a stupid alarm clock phone..Version: 18.3

Same value for much more moneyUlysses is a very nice app and I’ve loved using for several years. But now technology and apps are changing quickly and Ulysses doesn’t offer enough to justify the subscription fees, unless you’re a high volume professional writer. I’d most like to see support for a Markdown standard (maybe CommonMark), live preview editing with toggle (like Typora) and side-by-side edit-preview options, rendering of LaTeX for scientific typesetting, styling and themes based on web standards and pluggable (anyone can create a theme using CSS and upload it). I think Ulysses is clung too much to PDF and eBook publishing, which limits what it can be as a web publishing writing platform..Version: 13.1

Dreaming$70/year for a buggy text editor! Hilarious..Version: 16.1

You’re renting an appIt’s easy, don’t get this app.Version: 15.1

Fine app, but...By now they should have developed for more than just Apple products. I was hoping that with their claims of using the subscription model to provide important updates that they’d have released for other platforms by now. Or even a web app at bare minimum as my desktop is an always will be a PC because of Apple’s inability to be hardware agnostic. But nope. Several price increases later and not a single update I consider useful other than dark mode. YMMV. I’ve moved on to greener pastures as I can’t justify the subscription fee when other products exist that are multiplatform and buy once. There’s also free software that’s almost as good and available on everything from iOS to Linux and everything in between. Ulysses may be just the price of a coffee(more like three after all their price gouging increases), but at least I’ll feel like I’m getting my money’s worth with the coffees. At the end of the day, despite their flowery rhetoric to justify their bonkers pricing, this is just a text editor and if you’re not a mindless Apple fanperson you’ll be better off looking elsewhere. However if you ARE a mindless Apple fanperson who likes to overpay for things, then this is the app for you! Edit: After switching to Scrivener(you actually get to buy the software and not be bled out every month, crazy right?), I actually like it more. They also offer a free 30 day trial and that’s days used, not calendar days. Give it a try because at this point Ulysses has become a terrible bang for your buck and if you’re foolish enough to stick with it, you deserve to bleed..Version: 21.5

I will NEVER rent my softwareWould I buy this app? Absolutely. Will I RENT it? Not in a million years. I am so tired of developers moving to a subscription model. I want to OWN my software, and I will NEVER, EVER pay for a subscription. In addition to the newest iPad Pro, I still have a first-gen iPad. It still works fine, and all of the apps I bought for it still work just fine. And they always will...for as long as that iPad lives. The App Store used to be a wonderful place to find new apps. It was a fair system; great for the buyer who got updates for free, and great for developers who were reaching a vast user base like never before. They would never have had the exposure for their app that the App Store supplies, nor would they have had so many people willing to purchase their software because Apple made it easy and less scary to buy software on the net. Developers have enjoyed a new, lucrative age with the App Store. So what happens when the money starts getting good? They start seeing dollar signs and thinking of ways they can get people to fork out more money. A subscription is brutal. Renting the app to us? A very Microsoftian piece of crap thing to do to your loyal user base. You should be ashamed. Where before I was cheering for the developers and hoping you sold apps like crazy and made a ton of money...now I'm actually hoping for your sales to plummet, so you can see the direct result of a greedy business model. You've taken advantage of Apple's fantastic App Store, and ruined the joyful experience for users. Steve Jobs would never have let this crap happen. So disappointing..Version: 18.5

Hate the new subscription serviceHate the monthly subscription.Version: 16.1

Ow that hurtsThe subscription offering and price is ridiculously expensive. Ridiculous when you consider how excellent Scrivener is and how the costs differ so much. Sad that they are so money grabbing for an ok ish product.Version: 16.1

They had me until monthly subscription.IT seems every app wants you to pay a monthly fee and for some that makes sense. Unfortunately this is not one of those. I really hope the developer smartens up its a nice app but not worth what you’d pay for it in a year. I would have bought this had it been a reasonably priced single purchase..Version: 15.1

Not worth itNot worth the monthly fee. And not happy payed full price for all there apps because of there features around 100$ I might add.. just to find out a month later “Hey we’re taking away all your features and you need to pay monthly now” BS.Version: 12.1

Right sidebar notes—on Ipad—now gone. Poof!Dear Max & Marcus, Did you guys know, you just removed a feature that makes (sorry, "made") your Ipad app actually different, more unique than all those other "markdown-note-apps." You now, can no longer edit a note in the right sidebar WHILE being able to see... the main editor. Now... notes in the right sidebar “pop up", when you try to edit them. Now... I can’t ‘see’... what’s in the editor, WHILE... I write a note... in the right sidebar. And that—the "WHILE" part; the "simultaneous" part—good sirs, is the whole point, of having "a note" in the right sidebar. Also, why did the right sidebar get so bright in dark mode? It burns my eyes when I look at it—so much—I may have to go to a doctor. It used to be black. Now, it’s a gray-ish-color. What’s the deal fellas?.Version: 21

I paid for this app but now they want a subscription!I am writing on again off again, it’s how I write so I use this app infrequently. I bought it a while ago and used it fairly heavily at first then put it down for a while, I recently got some new ideas and opened it up to start writing again and now they want a monthly subscription! Absolutely ridiculous. I’ve already paid for this and I paid for it because I preferred it over any other writing apps I’ve tried but now they are getting greedy and want more money for no new services. This wouldn’t be a terribly complicated app to write either so I see zero justification for asking for a subscription. Regardless if that’s how they want to do things now the people that paid for the app originally should have been grandfathered in. Zero stars, I can’t use the app anymore and now Ive lost my creative ambition to write for the night..Version: 18.5

ByeI'm happy with subscriptions. Ulysses is a mature (and expensive) app that hasn't evolved much over the years and I'd be happy to pay a reasonable subscription for maintenance: for bug fixes and new versions of iOS. But I won't pay a subscription this high. I'm giving this 1 star because I'm not going to use an app that isn't being maintained: therefore Ulysses has suddenly become unusable for me..Version: 11

A year later......and the subscription model is, as expected, a joke. This isn’t Photoshop, with a constantly evolving set of tools; it’s a minimalist text editor with all the low-hanging feature-fruit already picked. Over the last year, nothing substantive —with the possible exception of Siri Shortcuts support— has been added, and there is absolutely no reason to believe that situation will change in 2019. As an app —for which I happily paid twice, on both the iPad and MacOS— Ulysses is a fine piece of work. As a service with a steep subscription fee that’s about to renew, it’s ridiculous. Time for me to move on..Version: 14.5

DisappointedI’m disappointed to realized I downloaded this huge app for nothing because there is no real trial. I have no problem paying but I will never give money for an app before trying it. This make no sens. I never did any review that I remember of but this needed my attention and my time to put a small one star of disappointment..Version: 18.6

Greed?I saw comments about the “greed” of developers on MacRumors when the app switched to a subscription model. I didn’t agree and would be willing to pay if I loved this app. BUT when I downloaded the “free trial” I learned I have 3 days (as opposed to 14 days just 2 months ago and three months a few years ago) AND you have to cancel your automatic subscription 24 hours before the deadline. So it’s a 2-day trial! This is basically no trial at all if you have any kind of life or job. So although I was tempted by immediate icloud cross-playform potential and beautiful dark distrctiom free mode. I wouldn’t even have time to explore its features or workflow. Yes, a three-day trial is greedy and consumer-hostile..Version: 16.1

Price increased againPrice increased again. I purchased the full software before their switch to subscription. Annoying, but I’ve stuck with it. Recently I’ve noticed the updates are more infrequent and there was an increase to the monthly subscription price. The application itself is fine, but I’m starting to look at alternatives that I didn’t consider before, like Scrivener. $8/mth ain’t it for a note-taking app..Version: 19.3
