My writing appWhy I like it. It's consistently updated, so it is completely worth the subscription fee based on that alone. It works flawlessly across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. With a separate keyboard, I type into my iPhone way more than I thought I would. It has a lot of features, but I only use a few. Basically, I write anywhere from 250 to 2000 words per day, so as I write, if I need to make changes, Ulysses makes it easy. Move a chapter or a scene, it's a lot easier than Word or Google Docs. Negatives. Markdown can sound intimidating, but I tend use few commands, just heading. For heading, it's simple, just type a # at the beginning of the line. Done. Learn not to use the tab key for indents. Don't use tab anymore, or you may have to spend a week un-tabbing your manuscript to get it to format properly..Version: 21

I love 89% of Ulysses!I started using Ulysses 4-5 years ago because I wanted a great Markdown editor, with both a desktop and iphone version. I’ve been using it ever since, having written well over a million words across 5,000 notes in it so far. I love so much about it, even though it lacks a distinct—and recently newly crucial to me—feature of inter-note linking. But the interface, UX and writing flow of Ulysses still has my preference over any other app I’ve tried. Much love!.Version: 24.3

This should be your go to writing appI have used nearly every writing app available and no matter how the others tempt me, I keep coming back. From ease of use to power tools to ever-improving features, if you’re not using a Ulysses to write, you’re doing yourself a disservice..Version: 21.4

Worth the costYou should pay for it, you get the iOS and Mac app for 40 a year, which is still good. If you are a student it’s even cheaper! The sync with apple devices is amazing..Version: 14.3

Terrific AppI use this app every day for a variety of reasons and wouldn’t trade it for the world. If I could make any improvement I’d ask for a windows version so that I could continue my writing on my computer, because this app is the only thing keeping me writing mostly just on my iPad. Absolutely love the app and understand the subscription model’s necessity as well! Many apps are moving to this new form of payment and it makes sense with the ongoing development and updates. Thank you for your hard work!.Version: 19.2

Best Writing AppDisclaimer: I got a student discount. Ulysses is great. The tutorials are very good and you should get them emailed to you. What I like most about it is how it re-orders the writing process in a way that makes sense. You start by opening a sheet in the inbox and writing something down, without worrying about organization or formatting or anything. When you're done, you can sort it into a robust organization system with nested folders and tags. When you're done a project, you can export it (I use PDF export for editing with the Apple Pencil) and send it off to wherever it needs to go. It puts the writing first and that just makes sense..Version: 16.1

Awesome writing app for every needSimply the best app out there for writers.Version: 11

Shouldn’t have gone subscription based but overall pretty goodTitle.Version: 12.2

Simply The BestUlysses is bar none the best writing tool I have ever used. I was almost totally ignorant of markdown as well as writing apps of this sort, but caught onto it all quickly and am enjoying more and more of its functionality monthly. My only big gripe is the obvious one, that there is no Windows or Linux version, or even a web-based option. It therefore has become the biggest reason I will keep investing in my Mac and Apple mobile products..Version: 21.5

If you write a lot, this is worth every pennyI do a ton of writing. Some of on the my iPad, others on my iMac. This app is absolutely perfect. The ability to use folders and categorize work is great. Been using this for 3+ years..Version: 19

My go-to writing app for everythingI’m a professional writer and author. I use Ulysses for absolutely everything I write (with the exception of personal emails and short replies to clients). I write all my blog posts in Ulysses and upload them straight to my Wordpress blog. I especially love that Ulysses now enables me to specify a file name for my images — as I use an IPad for all my work tasks, I can’t edit the image file names if I upload them directly to Wordpress so Ulysses really helps with my SEO. I write all my social media posts and emails to clients in Ulysses too. I draft all my client deliverables in Ulysses and export them to my client’s preferred format. I then import the final version to Ulysses so I always have a beautifully filed copy of the final piece of work. I’m writing my novel in Ulysses and I wrote all my gardening and children’s books in Ulysses. I create personalised children’s picture books (which require code to accomplish the personalisation) so I also write all the code in Ulysses too. I love that Ulysses is simple and easy to use. It’s got a great filing system. I can make things easier to find quickly with tags and filters. I can create previews and summaries and configure Ulysses to display them in a way that lets me quickly remember what’s happening in a novel chapter or blog post without having to read the file. And all my files take up a fraction of the space Word files do. I was initially really sad when Ulysses went to a subscription model but given I use Ulysses every single day for everything I write, it’s worth it :) The team issues helpful improvements frequently and they’re really responsive when I find a bug. If you write regularly, I can’t recommend this app enough. If you’re a student, business owner (or someone who works from home on your own device) and/or write (as a professional writer or as a hobby) then you’ll easily use this app enough to justify the price. And if you’re the kind of person who gets distracted by formatting etc. then Ulysses will solve your procrastination issue. Buy it now!!!.Version: 15.1

Great appThe is a great app. Simple and powerful. I understand and appreciate the subscription model. This app is worth the yearly subscription..Version: 14

So creativeI never write app reviews but Ulysses is so intuitive and flows in a way software hardly ever does. Some apps get in the way of the idea-flow of your brain but this one just gets out of the way. From single sentences to entire projects with tons of sub-headings and folders it just seems to be designed in a way that organizes creativity while being simple enough to go at the speed of your brain, but still allow you to use simple markup and word processing without that being the focus of of the document. It's about the content and flow of your writing, not the font style of the heading. They let you mark it as a heading so you can make that decision later. But it still looks really good. Minimal but clean. Also the seamless synching between all your devices really works - you can access your writing anywhere and you can quickly choose to see all your idea topics, without having to open them all separately, or see nothing except what you are writing. It's just so good when an app does one idea and does it really well and Ulysses does that. I didn't do much writing until I got this program and in a way it has taught me about workflow as much as it has done what I'd hope the software would do. It's the writing app to maximize your creativity..Version: 11.1

ReliableIt just works!!! Simple place to write with no interruptions. Export options are amazing. Support has helped me get over my not knowing things since 2017. Well worth the $. And it’s easy to live with the markdown in this app because it’s so simple. I’m glad it is there and it helps me write. The built in Editor is clear, easy to use and a key feature. All docs are saved within the app!! On one drive to wait for..Version: 27.1

Great app. I’m using it for most thingsMonthly subscription is a little hard to justify. You have the option of paying for it all in If they reduce their price just a little or offer a 2 or 3 year option instead of PA discount I’ll continue to use it..Version: 13.1

Almost perfectThis is the best text editor on both desktop and mobile. Period. HOWEVER - It really needs collaboration features. Add collaboration and I’ll drop that last star to make it 5, until then it’s still my go-to for any and all writing tasks..Version: 17.1

One of the best apps I’ve ever usedAs a writer, I appreciate how great this app is. As a designer I’m incredibly impressed with what they’ve pulled off here. It has the features you need without bloating with features you don’t. A masterpiece of restraint and functionality..Version: 13

ICloud integration makes it betterI used Scrivener for my first book. It’s fine. Not really too different from Ulysses. However, I was always concerned that I needed to manually backup to iCloud since I don’t use Dropbox. Ulysses automatically syncs across devices with iCloud. There are minor differences that I like better such as the way the folders work and the way copied and pasted text doesn’t have any formatting from its original source..Version: 24.6

A fantastic app for academic writingI originally approached Ulysses with suspicion, being a strong supporter of Scrivener. Scrivener is a great app, unquestionably. But Ulysses has completely won me over. The fact that it is unified by plain text/markdown means that all my stuff is accessible at any time through filters and keywords: notes, random ideas, drafts, outlines. The export capabilities is beautiful, and there is a growing community sharing templates conforming to academic styles. I do wish it worked more seamlessly with Bookends (though there is a workaround that _almost_ does the trick). I love that my TextExpander snippets work on my iPad Pro, and that one subscription covers all my devices. In fact, probably the best advantage over Scrivener is the fact that it syncs perfectly through iCloud (rather than Dropbox). Every day I discover new features. One recommendation: if you do use it, check out the Ulysses course on The Sweet Setup. It’s worth the money..Version: 20.2

My favorite writing app, but…I’ve tried a ton of writing apps but Ulysses is the best one yet. I’ve been using it for over a year now so I can say that pretty confidently. However, there is one feature that has been glaringly absent: sheet linking. This is the only thing Bear, another writing app I’ve used, has over Ulysses. I would love to have the ability to link to other sheets for my own reference—the fact that I can’t is the only reason I’m leaving four stars instead of five..Version: 23.1

Casual writerI saw a review where someone said to ditch the markdown. I want to reply that I’m one of the user who adores the markdown features of ulysses and how it allows me to focus on the text itself without being distracted by the formatting itself. I mean sure there are the *’s and so on but it also allows me to be aware of the styling. Like “yes this text is going to be bold or whatever” without being in my face with the boldness till I’m ready to export the writing itself. Please keep the markdown features and keep on polishing it..Version: 21.3

Nice layoutReally like using dark mode for this app and really wish you’ll make a Windows version. I just switched computers and can only use it on my phone now..Version: 12.3

Fantastic writing experienceBy far the best iOS markdown editor out there.Version: 14

Projets d’écriture simplifiésEnfin un endroit où classer tous nos textes et les ressources annexes. Fini de chercher les documents sur l’ordi. De l’iPad au Mac et du Mac à l’iPad..Version: 19

Great for SermonsI am a Pastor, and this is the best app I have found for writing sermons. I put all my notes into the notes tab for the document I am working on and have them next my text while I am working. At the end of the year, I can combine all the sermons for that year into a beautifully formatted word document for archive and backup purposes, and it even lets me know approximately how long the sermon will be when presented. Good apps are worth paying for, and this one is worth every dollar!.Version: 14.5

Perfect for the way I workWhen I am writing a chapter, I might have a fully realised subsection. But for the next section, I might just have a sketch. Or I might just have a couple of sentences with ideas I don’t want to forget. I was ending up with dozens of fragmentary Word documents, which I assumed I would eventually flesh out and cut and paste into the final work. The sheet philosophy of Ulysses is perfect for this. You can create as many as you want, and drag and drop them anywhere. Also, you can import all your Word documents, and it supports footnotes, which was a deal-breaker for me, as I footnote extensively. This is light-years ahead of any other package I have tried, and now I couldn’t imagine working any other way..Version: 21.5

Fantastic WritingAppI was wondering what everyone was raving about, but you have to use it to understand. It just gets out of your way and allows you to write. No worrying about formatting and it's so versatile. I've written markdown presentations by integrating it with another app, published blog posts from within the app and created pdf and iBook documents. Love it..Version: 18.6

Best Writing Interface for The Long HaulI love Ulysses and have been using it for years to write fiction and creative nonfiction. Now, I personally love the use of Markdown because it exports so well and, from a creative perspective, ensures no distractions get between me and the act of writing. Ulysses isn’t for final drafting or academic writing, and I’m thankful that they’ve stuck to doing what they do best. I love the syncing feature and have found that being able to write on my phone has increased output significantly. (I can finally take advantage of all of those end-of-errands brainstorms that occur in my car after its parked in front of my house.) Previously I was using Pages to keep all of my writing accessible on my desktop, laptop, phone, etc. but Ulysses is so much more stable and conducive to use on multiple screens that I will continue to pay for it ad infinitum. The value of this product is continually apparent to me and I fully support the subscription based model; these developers earn their dough!.Version: 21.1

Love Ulysses but the restoring from the cloud is frustratingI love Ulysses. I write daily, and Ulysses has been my writing tool of choice for years. But their storage strategy (everything goes to the cloud and gets downloaded from there) and their new frequent update schedule is driving me crazy. I open up Ulysses to write...and my iPad and iPhone are empty. Wait 10 minutes while everything I’ve ever written downloads. It’s not bad enough that I’ll go to anything else, but I wish it saved files locally and just synched. Erasing everything with every update is frustrating..Version: 15.1

Amazing note taking app that sorts notes like I sort my inboxIt seems a simple idea but this app just nails it. I set a group (I think of it like a folder) and call it projects, then the next group is the project I am working on. Then if I am having a meeting or discussion around that project I put the notes in there. Damn it’s simple to find and retrieve notes that way. So logical..Version: 12.2

I like Ulysses and use UlyssesI like this program and use it to write. I wish it had regular expression search and replace, though. Who knows, maybe it does! The one thing that is not too convenient is printing. First you have to export, but not all export works to print. So, I export to PDF, and THEN I print from the preview. That works. I like to print because it is my belief people enjoy getting mail. If you want to send someone a message that you want them to enjoy getting, and they don’t feel like it is work they have to respond to right away like email, print it and mail it in the post! Ulysses is designed on a slightly different plane than that, but I still would like it to be easier to print. I do like Ulysses, though, and I use it..Version: 21.3

A fan but unconvinced that the subscription model justifies the continual spendI have used Ulysses for approximately five years and bought several versions of the app before the change to the subscription model. While there is no debate about Ulysses quality, my doubt has increased in relation to the subscription cost to new feature ratio. For example compare an office 365 annual account. While I like Ulysses, the subscription model increases the onus on providing value. I remain unconvinced. For example, in the latest version 13 the creators flaunt things like highlighting keywords and a target to set writing goals. Sure this is useful, but is it valuable in comparison to say, pinch to zoom. Something that seems pretty low on the evolutionary scale for iOS and macOS but remains absent in the Ulysses feature set across all IOS and MacOS..Version: 13

Sync issues — like most "shoebox" appsEditing my previous review (bumping it up to four stars from three)... A couple of weeks ago, I slammed Ulysses for recent iCloud sync issues. Then I did some more research and learned it's not alone in that regard. Indeed, many if not most so-called "shoebox" or central-library apps — like, to name two very familiar examples, Apple's own Notes and Photos apps — are prone to them, too. It seems to be the nature of the beast. If you value having all your work together in the same library at all times without having to futz around with individual files and folders, the risks that go with the "shoebox" method are part of the price of admission. So I withdraw that previous complaint. Indeed, if it were not for that method of file storage and the occasional (but sometimes scary) glitches that accompany it, I'd give Ulysses five stars. For most of my work, I prefer the advantages of MultiMarkdown and a more transparent file structure than what Ulysses offers. That said, I still recommend it highly; it's a great app and a marvelous writing environment in which you'll spend many hours working happily and productively..Version: 15.1

It only gets betterI switched from Scrivener to Ulysses over my dissatisfaction with the Scrivener iOS app. Ulysses' app was just what I needed. I got the Mac version as well, because sometimes I want to work on my laptop and sometimes on my iPad Then I realized that I could load my whole collection of my writings into Ulysses to reference at any time. My finished novels are there, all the unfinished ones, all the roughed out ideas, and reference material. Of particular interest to me is the grammar and style checks. I find that most of the stand alone grammar and style check apps are pretty judgmental and preachy. The Ulysses function isn't either. It is nice not to have to export to another app or website to complete grammar and style checks. The integration with Wordpress makes it the perfect app for me..Version: 22.2

ExcellentI like everything about Ulysses. I’m just wondering if there’s a way to stop it from ‘scrolling’ on and on though, to break it up into ‘parts’. For myself it seems like I have to ‘hunt’ for whatever I’ve entered unless I do something like make a bunch of special characters run across the entire display like ‘equal’ signs ( === ) ‘separating’ one ‘article’ from another. It’s like this ONE HUGE ONGOING ‘FOREVER’ SINGLE TEXT, and not at all ‘separated’. I think I might be missing something? People at Ulysses, ‘help’ here? I mean, I don’t think I should have to ‘scroll’ down forever to find a “small section” of my overall “ongoing forever” text input, yes?.Version: 27.3

Ulysses is My Go-To Digital TypewriterI don’t know what to say except there’s not much you cannot get with this app that you want. If you need underlined text (I almost never do), you can always add it in post editing. I like the view settings, and the customizable themes (there are countless options available in light, dark, and variated color themes). I have an Anne Pro II mechanical keyboard, an iPad Mini 5, and an iPhone SE 2020. Both of my newer Apple devices can hook up to my keyboard by Bluetooth simultaneously. I love the “distraction free” mode that removes all of the unnecessary bells and whistles other apps throw in that make things confusing and distracting. I can immediately export my documents to PDFs using varied styles (also many to download). I have enjoyed this app for 6 years now, and will never turn my back on it as long as it is updated. I will be subscribing again this weekend and checking out the website..Version: 21.1

This is one of the best writing tools I've ever usedJust to put everything in context, I'm mostly a blogger and essayist. For large scale research projects and other tomes, a much more heavy duty tool like Scrivener is the tool of choice. For me, Ulysses allows me to freely write without a lot technological interference, yet it is feature rich and I can still do word processory things if I still want to. I can export my work as an ePub, Docx or a PDF, but what I most appreciate is that I can directly to my WordPress blog without ever leaving Ulysses. Ulysses is also very Apple centric. Thus I have versions installed on my Mac, my iPad and my iPhone. And as Ulysses stores my projects on iCloud sharing between platforms is totally transparent. Since I normally work remotely, I typically start a new blog entry or an essay using an iPad, but if some rare moment of inspiration hits me and I'm out and about somewhere, I can grab my phone, open up Ulysses and not have to loose them fleeting moment. A very valuable plus for me..Version: 18.5

Keeps skipping to next sheet as if on a timer.Problem with latest update. I can write for only about 2 minutes before the app abruptly jumps to the next sheet in the group as if the sheets were slides on a timer. I’ve been using this app daily for over a year with no issues, until now. Not sure if it’s the latest iOS release or Ulysses release. I just bought a new iPhone 11 pro and I wasn’t having this problem on the iPhone 10. It could be any if the above. Please fix. This app has been my workhorse. Update. Deleted and reinstalled app. That fixed the problem. Updated review from 2 to 4 stars..Version: 18.3

Best of the bestUlysses continues to be the standout in a sea of writing apps. I wouldn't use anything else and am happy to support the team for their hard work over the years..Version: 11.1

Very Enjoyable to UseI’ll start this review by saying to people who complain about the specifics of using Markdown in this app, there are other options in the settings, and you can customize your own Markdown language! It’s really useful. My favorite part about Ulysses is the themes. I’ve created several that I absolutely love using (especially Reshi, which you can find on the app’s themes & styles site). Reshi is forest greens on light grey and is so calming to use. I get so much joy from opening this app, and the fact that themes work on my phone is great. The organization of this app is wonderful, clean and easy, with tiered grouping and icons. Very satisfying. The markdown tags are both great and frustrating. My themes hide tags, so using them creates odd spacing. But I do like feeling like I have a literal grasp on the text. I’m still playing with all the features of this app. Some things seem buggy, but that might be my inexperience. Overall, I really love this app..Version: 21.1

Most HelpfulThe app is as good as promised. The help and instructions that come with the program leave something to be desired and could be easier to navigate. However, the support department is both exceptional and prompt. Every question I’ve asked has been answered quickly, thoroughly and accurately and has pointed me to the essential resources I’ve needed to proceed. Such quality service is rare these days and definitely appreciated. - Sir Grumpy.Version: 24.6

FunctionalI started writing my novel with Scrivener, but I found myself getting distracted with customising and configuring. I switched to Ulysses and haven’t looked back. Such a great blend of simplicity and functionality. Highly recommend this app!.Version: 15.1

WonderfulAs a writer I have found Ulysses wonderfully simple and highly intuitive. It provides just enough customization and file management capability to allow the user to ‘settle in’ to the task. The editing process is, after a little practice, easy and powerful. The companion iPhone app fully supports and seamlessly syncs and is ideal for capturing ideas on the go. While initially resistant to paying a subscription, after using Ulysses for three hours of the 14 day trial it was an easy decision to take up the yearly subscription. Thank you. Good job. Happy subscriber..Version: 12.2

The Most Flexible Writing Tool Out ThereI’ve been using Ulysses ever since version 3 came out in 2013, and the product continues evolve and expand its capabilities to this day. Subscription pricing was a controversial move that got me looking elsewhere, but in the end no other writing tool met my needs in the same way. The price is moderate, but the tool is excellent. Ulysses excels at both short- and long-form writing, whether you’re working on a thesis or writing a 2 paragraph blog post. The implementation of Markdown and other plain text markup syntaxes is simple and easy to use, the organizational capabilities of the app are second-to-none, the editor has just enough options to fine-tune it to be your own perfect writing environment, and when everything is finished, you can export your writing into just about any file type imaginable with custom output formatting. A few things I’d like to see: - Inline image display for remote images - Syntax highlighting in code blocks - Ability to assign relative font sizes to header elements - Ability to embed a link to another sheet In the end, the flexibility, ease of use, and power of Ulysses resulted in a conversion from a prior owner to a subscriber. As long as they can keep minor updates coming out at a regular clip, and considering the subscription covers all platforms, it likely will be a relatively good deal (or at least break even) in the end instead of paying for upgrades across 2 platforms. If you write, I highly recommend Ulysses..Version: 12.1

Fantastic updateUlysses—especially on iOS—has utterly transformed my workflow. I had about three seconds of recoil when the app moved to a subscription model...followed by the very obvious realization that, for me, it was entirely worth the price of admission. This update just confirmed it. I was working on a conference when the new version came through (still am) and it instantly made my work easier. Drag and drop is transformative (I work almost exclusively from an iPad Pro 12.9) and the UI changes are not only beautiful, they also add up to an even more effective work environment. And Library Focus...I now wish every app with a library could do this as well. Only thing missing from iOS is control over themes—they still need to sync from the Mac version. But wow: great work..Version: 12

My rating review spcl. ThanksUlysses insn't bad at all for a kinda poet like me to describe muy life's everythings history from beggining to now and of course, the yet developping future of mine as well! Thanks Apple's app store team to brought Us Ulysses to it, seems really very great to write it all down! :D :p :) <3.Version: 13.1

A stellar app from wonderful peopleI can’t say enough nice things about Ulysses. Not only is it one of the best looking apps you’re likely to find, it’s also one of the most powerful. And this is ALL apps I’m talking about, not just text editors. Their support is phenomenal. I don’t think I’ve ever had another company contact me directly after sending in a report. Not only did they take the time to understand my issue, but they also implemented a fix in their next update. How cool is that? If you do any sort of writing, you should give Ulysses a try. It’s pleasant to use, their Markdown support is amazing, and their support team has got you covered..Version: 18.3

Wow.En tant que personne qui aime écrire, cette application est jusqu’à ce jour la plus incroyable que j’ai jamais vu..Version: 21

Great appI was curious if the transition from pages to Ulysses would be helpful as I embark on writing up my PhD because I was getting a bit stuck... and it’s been great!! My writing proficiency has increased and I now work on it anywhere and everywhere. Highly recommend this app.Version: 14.2

Loving this app! Finally a writing app that is quick, responsive, easy to use, AND I can trust the sync functionality..Version: 13.1

The writing check tool is basically uselessThe tool picks up about 30% of all the issues I have (according to my own proofreading) and suggest 20 others that I don’t deem to be a problem. It has its use but is basically pointless considering the energy you put in.Version: 20

Robust SimpleExcellent for authors, writers.Version: 18.6

Quick entryI like the application but i really wish there was a quick entry. If you have a quick idea you want to enter so you an use it later, it takes forever for the app to open. Even Microsoft Office opens faster. So then you need an intermediary app, like DayOne, Drafts (another subscription) or Apple Notes which is very bad at exporting. In both cases you cannot export multiple notes in bulk, you don’t export tags, or create dates. Nice to have: not visible markdown, like in Spaces, which if it continues to improve will soon be a better app..Version: 22.1

Worth more than $6 per monthDon’t believe the haters, being worried about the cost of a sandwich per month versus good tools means they are not serious writers. Finally a great iOS/Mac solution for *serious* writers, normal people who are serious about writing. I’ve only scratched the surface so far and it’s brilliant. Sync is rock solid and it supports a wide variety of Markdown variants so you can keep your hands on the keyboard. The iPhone version is particularly good, allowing me to actually get work done even if I’m away from my desk..Version: 11.4

Formatting a bit buggy in the most recent version but overall a great appWorking on a dissertation and I have a million notes to keep track of. Ulysses is nice to type in (hello DARK MODE thank you for saving my poor, screen-saturated eyes) and a huge upgrade over my previous system of millions of folders within folders on my desktop. However, since I last updated its been doing a weird thing where the formatting from a particular section carries on into the next one even when it shouldn’t. Not sure if that’s an iPad display issue or true more broadly across the app. Hopefully it’ll get fixed and my notes will look normal again because otherwise I’m a big fan..Version: 22

Mac -> iPadOS :-(I use it all the time for authoring everything from books and articles, to papers and blog posts. When I finally decided to make the jump to a purely iPadOS environment, I was excited to take Ulysses with me. Unfortunately, Ulysses is pretty gimped on iPadOS. There is no direct way to take something from authoring through to publication without other tools, like I did in Ulysses on my Mac. Please add the ability to import our own export styles. I have several styles I use for book publishing that I cannot use because I have no way to add them. I don’t need a template editor or anything like that in Ulysses, just a way to use templates other than the ones you provide on your site. I’ve read your docs and can easily create them in any text editor, but getting them into Ulysses on iPadOs is a no go. I’m simply not going to purchase a new MacBook just to do that. Until that happens, Ulysses has gone from my one stop solution to simply a text editor, and that is the one component easiest to replace. It’s still a great editor, but that one omission just became a deal-breaker for me..Version: 23.4

Genuinely worth the cost for serious writingThis is an outstandingly designed app for serious writing, and it’s well worth the subscription fee. The library organization, editor experience, and sync are smooth and very rich, and a delight to use. It’s also regularly updated and maintained, and the support group is responsive. It manages to be uncluttered, simple, and feature-rich at the same time. I’d strongly recommend Ulysses. (To be clear, in response to some critical comments here: those who bought the previous version of the app can continue to use it—the subscription is for new and updated versions)..Version: 12.3

Sick of markdown!I have been a subscriber for a long time but I don’t like using it because it is still stuck on markdown. Is it really that hard to give us at least plain text as an option? Why can’t I choose my font size, type and color (like SnipNotes for example)? This app is perfect in every way other than this aspect and it is a shame that it sits underutilized. I really want to use it, but I just don’t like to. After a long wait, I may just jump to a less capable app, but one with choice of fonts and colors; there is a reason typewriters aren’t that popular anymore!.Version: 22.2

No checklists, markdown is annoyingSeems like a good app for writers if you don’t mind markdown. I’m a software engineer and I can deal with markdown in my job, but for a writing app it seems really annoying to have markdown characters all over a document. I was also looking for an Evernote replacement but this app does not support checklists. If you are writing a book check out Scrivener, I have not used the iOS version but Scrivener on macOS is great for writing a manuscript. No markdown, and designed for long writing projects like books..Version: 21.3

I’ve never been so productive!I love how clean and simple it is to use. The ability to just pick up my phone and start where I left off on the laptop is super handy! PLUS the daily word count goals actually motivate me to write!.Version: 16.1

Only feature missing is RTL language supportI like the app. Organizing your thoughts and capturing the ideas is easy through built in features. The only thing that holding me back from renewing my subscription is that it does not support RTL typing, and I write mostly in one of these languages. Hopefully you add this feature before I cancel my subscription..Version: 22.1

Just what I was looking for!Okay, I’ve only been using this for 24 hours but holy cow! It is already making my life easier. I have been using a different program to free write in but I was struggling to keep all my versions straight and my outlines and my notes and everything. It was MADDENING!!! But this is so smooth and easy to use! I can quickly move files around under different folders with the flick of a finger. #coulditbeeasier #absolutelynot #lovelovelove It syncs across platforms which is great because if I’m waiting in line and have a quick idea, I can jot it down on my phone. I tend to write on my iPad with a wireless Apple keyboard and the iPad interface is flawless. The subscription is totally worth it! I AM IN LOVE!!!.Version: 19.2

This app has changed my school life!I write everything in this app!!.Version: 13.1

The ultimate writing app.Ulysses alone is enough to keep me entrenched in the iOS/macos ecosystem. I've been using computers as writing instruments since the late 1970s, and have gone through just about every iteration of word- and text-processing tools one can imagine, from Electric Pencil through emacs to WordStar to WordPerfect to PageMaker to Word to TeX to LaTeX to LyX. None of them compare to Ulysses. It's just the right combination of power, flexibility, organizational framework, aesthetics, and usability. And its iCloud integration means that I can make use of multiple MacBooks, my iPhone, and my iPad Mini in a keyboard case to compose, revise, and publish anywhere and everywhere. I can even ouput .docx format, in order to appease the Word crowd. If you want the absolutely best writing app in the world, one that doesn't get in your way and removes all the technical and UX hurdles between you and your composition, you need Ulysses..Version: 22.2

Subscriptions are not all evil.My first reaction on finding out that Ulysses was moving to a subscription model had me running to the App Store to look for alternatives. Alas, there were none which fit my workflow nearly as well as this app, so I bit the bullet and ponied up. Now, after a few updates, I’m actually very happy with the idea of an annual fee. I’d probably spend just as much on updates, and if it keeps the developers making improvements such as the changes to the goal feature (a seemingly small thing which has greatly improved my productivity), I’m fine with it. This is a great app, and getting better..Version: 13.1

ExceptionalUseful. Feature-rich. Incomparable..Version: 14.2

Almost couldn’t write without itI love Ulysses. At this point I almost couldn’t write without it. One recent change I’m especially pleased with is the improved DropBox integration — I’ve had occasional problems with iCloud sync between iOS and Mac OS, but DropBox has worked for me. Having all of my drafts and research and snapshots from the web in one place is great. Also.... I write a lot of short reviews and they’re all right there. Projects that need to be submitted in (say) Word format can easily be exported and tinkered with there, but all the heavy lifting happens in Ulysses. And as a big Markdown fan, I find their Markdown support excellent. So.... yeah. Every time I see a flashy ad and think about switching to something else, I think.... nah..Version: 19.3

Syncing is fixed. Now it’s perfectI’m not sure if you made any changes for syncing across devices but I don’t have issues anymore. It’s working perfectly now!! The app is perfect.Version: 21.7

Finally, a Full Featured iPadOS Writing AppI am incredibly impressed with how much the developers were able to pack into the iPadOS and iOS versions of Ulysses. They update it regularly with significant improvements. As soon as Apple upgraded iPadOS with mouse support, Ulysses had mouse support. I was also shocked how quickly they were able to integrate the grammar and style check update after they released it on MacOS. Also, the iCloud integration is flawless (especially after struggling with Scrivener’s very poor Dropbox syncing). I really enjoy Scrivener’s desktop app, but the iPad version is so reduced in features that I just couldn’t stick with it. Given that my iPad is my main writing device, I needed something more reliable. I have been very pleased with Ulysses. I know a lot of people are iffy about subscription based apps, and I definitely am not a fan if it’s not done right. But in my first year with Ulysses, the significant improvements made to the app have made me feel comfortable with continued financial support..Version: 21.2

It’s great, ignore the 1 star haters!Yes it’s hard to pay for something monthly, especially since almost everyone is doing it. But if your career is writing then it is worth it. There are alternatives I’ve tried to save money (Scrivener is a great one) but the minimalism was completely gone and the free or cheap guys don’t have the syncing and fluidity or Ulysses. Bottom line. This is great. If you don’t though, and I mean really write for a purpose, this might not be so great. 5/5 easy. You guys better continue to update..Version: 16.1

Great App & 1 requestI love the app. For fiction writers could you add a small gallery of paragraph separators? Something more elegant than a few asterisks or dashes? Like a little oak leaf, an ornate squiggly line; a few artistic flares. It would probably have to be jpeg or something. Something that is customized for the Ulysses app and that will transfer over perfectly to an ePub or pdf to finally end up in the kindle library. It would be a great convenience if we could look within the app and add a few stylish paragraph separators that automatically work well with the Ulysses writing app. Thanks for creating my favorite novel writing app! Really like it!.Version: 22.2

Simple, brilliant.Great app. Simple, beautiful and customisable. Well worth the subscription. I would love an auto dark-mode based on brightness (please), ability to search within PDF attachments, and a mode to hide markdown formatting (unlikely I know). Thanks..Version: 14.5
