Chineasy: Learn Chinese easily for Negative User Reviews

Good app for beginners, focused primarily on readingGood app to get started with learning Chinese characters. I would like to have the option to automatically hear the character I’m learning rather than having to press the picture myself while doing the lesson. I know the purpose is to read more words but i think this feature would straightforward for those who want to listen and speak. I think it also would be nice to have reference for which words presented are actually used for speaking and which are literary for students looking at this app to supplement their Chinese class or learning..Version: 1.0.1

Great for IPhone, bad for Apple WatchThe app is great on the iPhone. The animations and visuals are very pleasing. However, I bought this app so I can review while on the go with the Apple Watch. The words for the Apple Watch are the same 10-15 words for the last 2 weeks. It is also more likely that the same words are repeated every single day. I have been progressing pass level 20 on the phone and am still getting the same words on the Watch. I tried reinstalling the app on the watch and phone to no prevail. I have tried contacting Chineasy but have not gotten a response. Hopefully they can resolve this issue and my ratings will go up. I bought the annual subscription and regret not trying the monthly subscription first..Version: 4.26.1

Unusable without premiumIf you’re using Chineasy to learn Chinese, everything goes smoothly until you reach level 9, because that is when you have to pay. I can’t figure out how the developers managed to get away with this issue. Chineasy is just a cash grab that lets you learn Chinese for a little bit, then asks you to buy premium. Trashy pay-to-win app!.Version: 4.22.7

Needs test/review functionThis app would greatly benefit from a test/review function every say 5 or 10 lessons. Otherwise I’m enjoying it!.Version: 1.3

Decent but DisappointedThis app is good for learning vocabulary, but requires much more self study when it comes to actually learning the language and how to speak. I purchased the annual subscription two months ago, and have since learned there is a lifetime package where you can pay up front. I was hoping to be able to upgrade to this with a credit for what I’ve already paid, but I was told this is not possible. I’m very disappointed as I can’t get through all the lessons in a year whilst also having to teach myself everything other than just vocabulary. I will not be renewing my subscription when it expires as it doesn’t seem worth it to pay for another year when the lifetime package was available, and I do not want to pay full price for the package when I already spent $40 on the annual subscription two months ago. Overall, decent app for vocabulary but disappointing experience!.Version: 4.3.3

Great app, but Mandarin onlyFor someone who is interested in Cantonese this app just throws you off. You can’t switch the oral part. At the very least allow one to skip over the pronunciation..Version: 3.1.1

Good idea but poorly doneThe main problem with the app is that it mixes traditional and simplified characters. For those of you new to learning Chinese and thinking this wouldn’t be much of a problem, it would be the same as learning English where they sometimes used French words. There are buttons to select if you want simplified/traditional but they don’t actually do anything. The other issue is that there’s no spaced repetition or practice (e.g. if you use memorise it makes you review words as your learn, word you get wrong come up more frequently etc). It’s a shame be because I’ve been looking for an app that focuses on the characters for a long time and thought this could be the one. Practice activities are just linked to match the translation/pinyin or true/false... which gets boring after about a day or two..Version: 3.0.5

Ripoff - don’t subscribe to this! This app charges a subscription fee for, in their advertising, more than 1000 lessons. However they have only produced 100 lesson cards but refuse to stop or pause the subscription until they have produced more cards. So a customers subscription is obsolescing away without being able to use it. They refuse to change their pricing model to be a one off charge which would make more sense, or pause the subscription until they have released more cards. And they believe this unethical and illegal behaviour is quite ok. They see nothing wrong with charging their customers money for a service they are unable to provide. Fortunately Apple were kind enough to refund the fee however by Apple allowing them to continue to charge money for no service puts Apple at risk of being seen to support this unethical company. Chineasy should be removed from the Apple platform immediately. ***** Response to developer response: “lessons”, “lesson cards” and “words” are the same thing in this app. You do not provide the amount advertised..Version: 1.4

I am sadI am sad because you only get 8 free levels :(.Version: 4.3.4

Traditional or Simplified?I like some of the aspects of this new app, but question why it does not concentrate on either Traditional or Simplified characters. As a fairly new student to Mandarin I find it confusing to switch between the two. I feel it is important to understand that I am learning one system or the other. There doesn’t appear to be any reason to switch between, maybe they did it because some look better visually. If so, this is a deceiving way to market an app that is geared toward education. I have been looking forward to using the Chineasy ideas in app form for my learning, but this release was quite disappointing and not worth my time or money to learn a mix-n-match of methods. Update: I am not buying the developers response. They do not give a choice of which characters they make you learn, which switches between traditional and simplified. I will agree with the statement about teaching the cultural insights, but the fact remains that they are not giving choices and will end up confusing students when they realize they cannot use the characters interchangeably..Version: 1.1.1

Gold member, but...I have some commentsThe app is great so I payed a yearly subscription but it really is a bit annoying the fact that inside the app you mixes up simplified Chinese with the traditional. I want to have an CLEAR option to turn off traditional. Now I selected simplified in the menu but in some of my cards (for example the card for long-长, I still see the traditional and I don’t want to put this in memory now at the begging of my journey). Also in reviewing tab (next to favourite words tab) from the selection menu I get the cards mixed up even though I selected simplified Chinese. Please do something about this, a clear option... Second thing is that I would like to have a visible way of seeing the last lesson I did. Please make it:) because at the moment when I reopen the app I don’t remember where I was last time I closed... Third thing, I see you have audio for all the words. Why not make a setting that will make the app play the audio of the card every time you pass from the current card to the next one? Audio listen reinforces the learning!.Version: 1.8

Quizzes need workApp concept is great, love the imagery but I feel the quizzes aren’t good enough for re-enforcing learning at the moment. The choices too often contain the correct answer and then other completely random answers for words that haven’t been covered yet, so it’s not a test of what you’ve just learnt, but just recognising the obvious answer out of the 4 choices. Would expect an option to test me on what I’ve learned with the questions and answers from lessons I’ve done. Would also like to be able to play the sound on the illustration card and or the ability to scroll from the description side of the card..Version: 1.1.1

Fun app with a surpriseI was really enjoying this app and was actually able to identify a few symbols on a menu and on a sign post after only playing a handful of times. The reason that I am giving it only three stars though is the sudden surprise to have to pay to continue. I only made it to level five before having to pay for the rest of the levels. I definitely understand that the developer has to make money from this but a little heads up would have been nice. Based on the app description it makes it seem like the premium part is for add free content or bonus content but that is not the case. You'll need to pay subscription fee to access most of the app. Another suggestion I would make is to allow the user to turn off the pronunciation part of the app. Personally, I'd like to just focus on memorizing the meaning of the characters without the verbal/listening component. Otherwise this is a great app..Version: 3.1.1

A Practical ReviewTLDR: Neat approach and engaging, but only somewhat useful at best for serious Chinese learners. My background: I’ve been dedicated to studying Chinese for awhile, and quite curious about the different teaching approaches geared towards Westerners, being a radically different language. At this point I’ve used all the most popular apps, and have been working with an actual Chinese teacher. How does this app rate as an actual useful learning tool? It’s a radically interesting approach no doubt. It does a good job at making each lesson as simple and as engaging as possible. What I like best about it is no other app handles the written language well, if at all. Remembering characters are the main and only focus here. This a fun little game, but you’re going to need more tools in the tool box if you’re serious about learning Chinese. Sentence structure and grammar aren’t covered here, neither is an opportunity to write characters. One thing the app is lacking is there isn’t a good review mechanism: yes, you can view the cards you unlocked, but that’s it. I wish characters learned earlier had to be reviewed within a certain decay rate to keep things fresh..Version: 3.1.5

Missing the features of other appsThis app provides a fantastic graphic way to learn characters. However, it lacks the common features of other similar apps. Each section provides a good selection of characters with a handful of questions to check how well it has been learnt. It doesn’t, however, have an easy way to review what you’ve learnt to aid retention or a way to easily search for characters you’ve learnt. This is an enormous flaw. There is no way you will retain the knowledge of all the characters based on a single viewing..Version: 1.11

Creakingly slow development and terrible customer serviceI was a massive fan of this app a year ago, so I bought an annual subscription. That was a mistake. Despite the high subscription cost, development has been very slow and it still only covers HSK2. The features have greatly improved, but that’s not much use if you need new content. The consistency of the levels also gets worse the further along you are, with a lot of random and useless words. They also delayed releasing an overhaul to old subscribers, then when it arrived it crashed every time I tried to use it. I sent feedback several times but finally my subscription ran out and all the levels got locked, a new feature in itself! For new Chinese learners, do yourself a favour, pay monthly and finish it quickly, then go to something unlimited like Skritter..Version: 4.18.5

How does this makes sense?!So yesterday I installed the app. It was amazing that I went straight forward and bought an annual subscription as it promises 1000+ words. I was sorely disappointed today when I reached level 40 out of 200 and there is NO MORE CONTENT AVAILABLE. That is simply ridiculous. I am honestly thinking about a refund as this is uhm. Unexpected. If this was not the case I would increase the rating to 5 stars without and issue. Edit: Still staying with my 1 star review as they promise a 1000 words and deliver about 200. Your approach to marketing this app is leaving a bad mark on it. If you do have all the levels done, and you are not releasing them so people do not abuse you - you should also consider the feelings of people who support you. Your roadmap is not the only thing that matters..Version: 1.1.1

BEST WAY TO LEARN MANDARIN!I have already bought the writing book and flash cards from chineseasy to help with my HSK studies and it has helped me so much. And now I found it has an app? Even better. 😀😀 EDIT: okay, after finishing all the levels the app gets boring. I wish there was a mini game or something so that you can refresh your memory. Also, I don’t like the fact that you have to learn traditional characters instead of simplified (for some things). I have cancelled my subscription because I already have the flash cards and books, it’s no different from the app. As a result I have given this 3 stars..Version: 1.7

Only 4 lessons then a pay wallMore content should be available for free. Subscription should be for premium content. 4 lessons isn’t even enough to see if the app is good enough to be worth paying for..Version: 3.4.0

Good app but not worth $60I enjoyed the app but after paying for the premium its not really worth the money. Basically $60 to learn characters and nothing else..Version: 4.6.4

Good app but you have to payI know good things don’t come free but I’m broke and don’t have the kind of money to spend on an app it is kind of cheap for the yearly subscription compared to other language learning apps and the 8 free lessons did help me I wish I could access more levels for free because it is a fun app for learning characters and pictures to associate them with I wish the payed part would just be added features or if you dont pay you can only access x amount of lessons a day but paid you can access as many as you like still a good app though from the 8 levels I’ve done.Version: 4.22.4

Not badI’m actually pretty impressed this app is amazing there is just a little problem when I’m learning. My parents are Chinese but I’m not good at Chinese. But I do know that when i pressed the button to hear the pronunciation it sounded a little weird. But that’s all this app is pretty good overall.Version: 4.24.0

Good, but why pay? This is a great app from levels one to eight. After this, you have to pay! I don’t like this, because I think that you should not have to pay to use an app to learn a different language. If you do have to make it have a cost, make the app cost a little bit, so you can learn Chinese without interruptions. I would gladly have paid some money to get the app, but I am not excited to pay the subscription. Other that this quite big drawback, the app is great and it has taught me as much as possible without paying. Also, I have a question.Version: 1.17

Completely neglects to teach the different tonesI learned Mandarin in college and wanted to see what this app had to offer. I don’t think that this would be a very good way to learn Chinese if you want to do a good job. The illustrations look nice but don’t do much else. In terms of learning, this is all straight memorization. There’s no explanation or intro for pinyin. Learning the tones is very important but there’s no mention of that. You see the word, hear the pronunciation, and can see the pinyin. But they don’t explain what the marks mean on the letters. There are some questions where you listen to an audio clip where they say a word or phrase and they ask you which is the correct pinyin. Sometimes they have two options with the same spelling and the only difference is in the tones. But that was never taught. If you remembered what the mark looked like and which letter it was on, you would guess correctly, but that’s just memorization, not true understanding..Version: 1.15

Surprise Subscription ModelThe app looks good upfront and seems like it might be helpful but you only get 4 levels before it blocks you off, requiring a subscription to continue. I understand that it costs money to develop an app but think that costs should be disclosed upfront rather than surprising you with the costs after a small bit of use..Version: 4.15.4

This is not the way to learn a languageI have a degree in Mandarin as a language so to see an app try to teach simplified Chinese (Mandarin) with traditional Chinese is ridiculous. They are two separate languages. Just to give you an understanding Japanese also uses Chinese characters, yet the meaning an pronunciation of words is completely different. Would you learn Spanish and Russian the same time? No. How about Hungarian and Swahili? No, of course not! So why try to learn two completely different languages thrown together into one confusing badly thought out mix? Do yourself a favour and don’t download this app. Not only are there the problems mentioned above, but the lessons begin by teaching really unnecessary words that in all honesty you’ll never use during your time in China. Waste of time app just trying to take the money of vulnerable people who don’t know any better..Version: 3.0.5

Subscription should be removedThe app is great and I’d consider buying it but sadly it’s subscription based..Version: 1.6.1

Needs a pop quiz featureLove the design and cards overall. I really wish there was a randomized quiz or so similar feature. Also annual payment models make me grumpy..Version: 1.11

Love the app in itself but a bit expensiveThis is the only app that has helped me with learning chinese and I was absolutely loving it. I understand why they have to charge for premium membership but it is pretty expensive considering. If there were cheaper options then I'm sure alot more people would purchase the premium membership as over £10 a month is a bit much in my opinion and people like me who can't afford premium then have to miss out. But definitely love the system..Version: 4.25.0

Why?I’d like to edit my past review and notify people that the game is actually a massive paywall. It costs money to keep using this. While it was good to learn from this app it definitely is a disappointment to find out you have to pay after level 9. And you’d think they’d made enough money from the books they made.Version: 1.0.2

See before you download!I have been trying to learn mandarin for many years. No app ever worked, apart from chineasy. When I first downloaded this app I fell in love with it! It was the easiest app ever, and it really helped me visualise the characters. However, as soon as I passed level 4 and tried clicking on level 5, the app said I have to get membership. I completely understand that the the app producer needs to make money, but charging people to learn the language is completely unacceptable. Language learning shouldn’t just be for people with money, it should be an opportunity accessible to all. I will delete this app and tell everyone I know to not use this app because it is a scam. It is using language to make money. Please do something about this..Version: 3.6.0

NotLetting me continue over level fourI liked it just The fact it’s not letting me continue level 4.Version: 3.1.4
