Great way to practice the alef bet, needs some work on handwritten sectionUpdate: a couple of the handwritten letters are incorrect. Shin / sin both have the dot placed to the left. Sin is just further left from shin which is not correct. Shin dot should be placed right. Other than that a great app. I am busily learning Hebrew and this app is AWESOME for learning the alef bet in type (it may start handwritten later on, I a, not sure yet). As a visual learner it is great to match his app with the speaking drops. You get both sounds, words and writing. So well done! Two thumbs way up and a thanks from me..Version: 7.86

Inaccurate CharactersI understand this app is for beginning stage Chinese learners, but as someone who has learned how to write Chinese, I can say that these characters are not really accurate. This app is using a strictly computer based writing format for Chinese. It is similar to how English writers would almost never write the letter “a” how it looks when you type it. The Chinese character “人” was the first character that I “learned” on this app. I’m not sure why, unlike other apps, this computer based version of the word “人” is exactly how it appeared on the screen. Anyone who knows Chinese knows that it should look more slanted to the side when you handwrite it. Just search on Wikipedia for “radical 9” and scroll down to the gif of a stroke order animation to see the difference in how the character “人” looks when you write it by hand. I checked the English handwriting section, and it looks like how the handwriting practice books give it, so why are the Chinese characters not given the same way? I am very disappointed that an app that is supposed to teach you how to write would teach in this fashion. It’s almost as if this app was coded without ANY input from someone who knows how to write Chinese..Version: 6.15

Some of the tones spoken don’t seem to match the written toneIt’s more frequent in their other app Drops. If I could hear it in a couple different ways, or hear it in a sentence, it would help distinguish what’s just someone’s voice and what’s the correct pronunciation. Also, I have romanization turned on not just the adaptive, so it should be giving me the proper written tone; I’d like to not sound like an idiot if I try to say “cao” to say grass and actually heard “cào” when I was learning it (something you don’t want to say.) That isn’t really the word for grass anyway and it’d be nice if that was clarified since some of the radicals are and some aren’t. It’s teaching you from nothing which is nice, but it would be helpful if the app explained what radicals are and how their meanings change. I dunno, I’ve only used it three days so maybe there’s a master plan I don’t understand. I’ll update this review when I get more information/ the audible portion is updated to be more varied and more like the speech I’m used to hearing..Version: 4.54

Good app, some minor faultsThis is a good app for learning Chinese characters and other languages’ scripts. However, some of the characters are written more like a computer font and less like a human, and it’s sometimes hard to write what you know is right, but you can’t because the app thinks you’re wrong. However, the app is very friendly and has a great user interface. This is why I gave it a 4-star rating. —— As always, make sure you have someone who knows the language to check your writing and grammar because if you’re learning it for the first time, you can get something wrong..Version: 5.2

Good with Room for ImprovementA very good app with a well-executed idea. However, maybe have more than 5 minutes free time as I don’t feel like I am remembering a lot of content while rushing to write as many characters as possible..Version: 4.54

Its pretty good.I really like the app! It helps a lot ... but my recommendation is to take out the timer because it puts a lot of pressure. Otherwise, great app...Version: 7.47

Fine & basicI wish we could train to write at a different size. It’s very big on iPad. I don’t think there’s enough opportunity to drill the muscle memory. Or enough substance to show me why I should pay for more than 5mins a day. Incorporating with an SRS (spaced repetition system) would be amazing. its fine, just doesn’t go deep enough for me..Version: 8.4

Good app.. but mandarin not free?I downloaded this app thinking “oh! It’ll be fun to learn some Chinese out of class.. and the way Duolingo does it is getting a bit boring..” I’m learning Mandarin in class, and I was like “what? There’s no Mandarin?” I did my first five minute session and it told me what man was and I’m like “no man is nan but whatever I’ll let it slide” and then I checked.. you had to pay to get mandarin. I would honestly rather get ads. Like a lot of em. I prefer most of your content being free. I can stand ads. I can’t stand certain and valuable content not being free. I’m deleting this, but I’m hoping if you are reading this and wanting to learn Mandarin, i’m just gonna say that Duolingo is probably a better option unless you feel like paying. 再见!.Version: 2.6

Russian AlphabetThis app is quite good at showing letters but when you are learning the letters in a session it usually only plays the same letter about 6 times in a row which moves to another letter after another 6 times. It would be nice to mix it up a bit to make you think more about what letter you are learning..Version: 8.39

I like the FREE partMake more free.Version: 3.2

Not sure how correct this is…I take Mandarin and school, and I understand it pretty well. I’m not sure if there’s a difference because it’s not Mandarin Chinese or something, because several of the words seem to be incorrect. For example, the app says 又 means also, but technically it means repetitive. 也 would be the correct word for also. This has happened with several other words I’ve seen. Otherwise, it’s a great system and the stroke order seems to be correct..Version: 3.2

Plenty Bugs In this VersionI have purchased the premium, but this app does not correct reflect that..Version: 8.4

Good concept but has a few bugsI love the Drops app, I’ve been using it to learn Cantonese, so I was excited to see this app roll out. However, I noticed a few issues right away: firstly, the pronunciations for the Hanzi characters are only Mandarin, which makes it hard to correlate with what I’m learning on the other app. Secondly, there are some issues with screen sensitivity. I’m on an iPhone SE, and maybe it’s not optimized for the small screen, but it won’t let me tap all the character parts at the bottom, and some other buttons also seem to not work. Would love to see these issues addressed, and then I would definitely use this app..Version: 2.6

Does not really support iPadMy iPadPro (plus pencil) is 99.9% of the time attached to the keyboard. IE: landscape. While this app claims to have iPad support, any app which enforces portrait orientation really cannot claim to support iPad. Can’t imagine I will be incorporating this into my daily study if I always have to wrest the iPad from the stand..Version: 8.60

Awesome Except for Time Constraint*This app would be one of the best Asian/language learning softwares out there in the apple App Store, IF it did not LIMIT USAGE to 5 minutes per 10 hours. :I **You may as well use alternative apps, and SAVE YOURSELF THE CLUOD/STORAGE SPACE** :( *I’m learning Japanese, on an extremely busy schedule. Which means that I want to do as much studying as possible, whenever my agenda allows. It’s truly too bad that this app only allows me to utilize the tools for FIVE MINUTES ONLY. As soon as you gain the momentum to study, it then cuts you off. *Perhaps the developer believes that people today are too dumb or attention deficient to handle more than 5 minutes a day. Here’s a hint for the developer: your demographic is likely composed of the individuals that are strong willed enough to independently take up a new language in their spare time, rather than game out or mind numb themselves. Give these people some more credit than a degrading assumption that they can only handle 5 minutes of learning, for every 10 hours. Thanks!.Version: 3.2

Chinese course lacking content and explanationsI heard a classmate in my beginning Chinese course recommend this for learning the characters, but I have to say that for all that the animations are pretty I’m rather disappointed by this app. There are no explanations of what the characters you learn are commonly used for other than one word beneath the character (which often isn’t even the most used definition of that character, like “shield” for 干), some of the characters you learn are simply bizarrely obscure, and finally the amount of characters there are to learn is very lacking. All in all, I’d say that downloading this app for Hanzi is a waste of time..Version: 8.60

I’m not learning from thisUsing the free version for about five weeks to try learning hanzi. I want to like it. I like that it’s tactile as well as visual and auditory. The interactions for progressively drawing the characters/words, learning the strokes and their order, are fun and strike me as quite cool. The trouble is that I’m not learning. The program isn’t using spaced repetition so far as I can tell. It introduces too many new words, too fast, and stops showing words before I really know them. It’s not clear to me either what governs the choice of new words. Words like “cliff” and “strike” and “cadaver” don’t feel like commonly used words. There must be some other logic. In any case, after five weeks, I think I’ll stop playing with this and try an Anki deck. Regrettably. The drawing interaction was fun..Version: 6.15

Animation following writing letters annoysThere is animation with the checkmark sign that flahes and makes it seem like it’s coming toward you that’s annoying to say the least. i thought i could try to use it and turn my phone screen away from after writing out a letter/ character but decided the annoyance is not worth it. The main Drops app does not have this regrettable feature. I would try this again if that was fixed, but until then, ciao..Version: 8.60

False advertising- cannot learn Japanese KanjiI downloaded to learn Kanji - as they advertise in their pictures for this app. But there seems to be no way to access this. I’ve skipped through Hiragana and Katakana, but still no Kanji characters come up for the next session. Maybe you need to “pay” for this? But I wouldn’t take the risk without knowing for sure..Version: 6.15

Touch interface needs workOn the iPhone SE, the tutorials that require you to tap on strokes and drag them into the image don't always work. Ran into issues w/ this for the "ren" hanzi demo, and then again w/ "tu" during the 5 min daily trial. It gets pretty frustrating, as a result, I uninstalled the app. Seems like the app has potential, just need to work out the kinks..Version: 2.6

Downloaded to learn ASL, wish they had more then just the lettersAlthough the app has helped me a lot I downloaded because it’s one of the only apps like this that has ASL, and finger spelling is helpful but I wish that it would go into numbers and more. I paid to learn ASL and I wouldn’t be able to communicate using ASL because it doesn’t go any further than the alphabet. Please add more to the ASL as I believe it is super important to learn as much as possible. Other then not having a lot of content I was able to learn fast and I can spell things. Please add more to ASL and other scripts if possible!.Version: 8.39

QuestionHello before I review, will this app ever teach japanese kanji? Kana are easier to learn and doesn’t take long... I feel like this would truly be a better learning experience if Kanji were available in lessons..Version: 3.2

Teaches phonics ineffectivelyLearning Russian Cyrillic. The fields of teaching and linguistics have already established the most effective ways to teach phonics and alphabet systems, but the developers of this app don’t know that. The most important thing to drill is the sound of the letter first, then next most important is the name. It would be far more helpful if the fricatives would have the audio of the phoneme (ex. In English, “mmm” instead of “em”/letter name of M) rather than the name of the letter. Later on, this sets up students for success by readying them to blend sounds when reading first words. The use of anchor words is not important, and in fact, it’s a distracting and adds visual clutter. It’s a nice gesture to want to encourage by saying we’ve learned 1 anchor word per letter by this is simply not the case: these words are have no audio recording and they’re not translated so they’re completely meaningless. I will need to finish learning the alphabet elsewhere. Unfortunately, this app is pretty but it simply didn’t teach me what I needed..Version: 8.60

Okay-ishThis is an app I used for about ten days and ultimately decided to delete. 1. I like that it brings back old characters I did several sessions ago. 2. I like that it gives me several versions of “writing”, though it was frustrating to get a stroke wrong because I was still trying to get the last stroke correct but the game had moved on without my knowing. Be aware there is a bit of a learning curve. 3. I do not like that I cannot choose what words it present me with. So far they’ve all been kind of weird words that I probably wouldn’t use very often and I don’t generally see how they’re related, so it doesn’t make much sense. I feel like it would be a much more useful app if I could put in the vocabulary I’m learning outside the app. 4. The notifications. Jeez! The notifications. I made the mistake of letting the app remind me—after being prompted to set a specific time for reminders. A specific time for a reminder is a fantastic idea! But the app notifies me every freaking hour. It’s not worth the aggravation of all those tiny red circles for a five minute free learning game..Version: 6.15

Problems with writingI don’t know if it’s because I’m on an iPod touch, but sometimes it won’t accept drawing a character even if I do it EXACTLY the same. This makes this app feel a lot less quality than its trying to be (for clarity, I’m going through Japanese which I know most of the kana characters already but thought it would be good to practice them again, anyway. When it keeps telling me that something went wrong it doesn’t come off as great for the app. One of the biggest issues I’ve come across so far is with あ where it seems to have a problem detecting the second stroke properly, and え where it won’t properly detect the second stroke at all. Because these are “simper” characters I really can’t imagine how well the detection is with kanji, or really any of the more complex writing systems.).Version: 7.86

PromisingAdd settings to remove the assisted writing mode please..Version: 3.2

Trying to do Russian cursive is infuriating.App is mostly great but the tracking for the cursive exercises is quite poor. Lines jump around and full strikes are rarely recognised first time..Version: 8.39
