Calory: Calorie Counter Macros for Negative User Reviews

❌ Lifetime purchase switched to FoodNomsUsed this app for 2 + years; during that time my first year was positive but things progressively worsened… I started encountering bugs around the one year mark and couldn’t use shortcuts to input food anymore. This was frustrating and support wasn’t able to help diagnose the issue. Widgets also don’t update their display properly. And while I’d purchased a lifetime membership, I didn’t see many changes coming to Calory (besides the feature updates to match new iOS additions like widgets and shortcuts). I didn’t feel like the core experience was very improved, and, while I get that many users are hoping for specific features for their use cases, I generally saw my experience using Calory decline as changes were made that didn’t improve what I believe to be the core user experience. I get that a calorie tracking app shouldn’t be constantly changing the core feature of calorie tracking, but there’s a lot that could be done with Calory to match what FoodNoms is doing. I will happily pay a subscription to have a calorie tracking app that is efficient, effective, and ultimately provides me the ability to create a feedback loop to make decisions that affect my overall health through dietary choices. Calory is no longer that app..Version: 2.1.7

If only I could!Tried out the app in general, it’s super easy to use and looks really nice. It’s a real nice change of a pace from all the other apps trying to over complicate things, if you want an app that you fire up and quickly add your calories without messing on, this is it. Unfortunately, it’s not suitable for me to use. Everything is USA based such the food database and the measurements, where as I’m in the UK cutting off all of the functionality apart from the quick add of calories. I’ve had to delete the app and go back to the cramped and confused MyFitnessPal, which is a shame as I would of been happy to buy premium. I’ll keep an eye on the app and may come back in the future, if it is expanded for more markets..Version: 1.4.2

Please continue developingThis app isn’t complete, there’s a few features missing, for instance, predictive search and showing recent foods when creating recipes, also no way to edit a recipe once created - you need to delete and start again… would also benefit from a library of mini illustrations/icons for foods rather pictures or relying on taking your own, would be nice to choose from that library for regular recipes or newly created foods..Version: 2.1.8

Nice but limitedLike the look of the app and the visualisation of your calories - and the widget where you can quickly add avg meal/snack sizes is handy. But like a lot of other people keeping track of alcohol calories etc is also important. But if you look up something simple like a beer (for example) the servings are listed in grams as a standard for some reason? Very odd and confusing as I’m not sure I’m logging the correct amount which is what the app is all about... If you scroll there’s an option for fluid ounces which I guess must be an American thing. No millilitre options at all that I could see which is what everything is measured in throughout most of Europe, so a bit useless for anyone from there at the minute!.Version: 1.3.2

??I can’t seem to delete my accountZ and when I message the team I HAVE to make an account on “Fun Media” , I really shouldn’t have to do this. To have a profile deleted..Version: 2.0.10

Just WOW!!! Amazing. (Update)Updated review (2 stars) Buggy. Please fix the bug when editing entered amounts, it randomly and inadvertently reverses your updated values. You may not even notice that your changes were reversed. Not reliable. Please fix so you can go back to the 5 star arena. Original review (5 stars) I’ve tried multiple calorie tracking apps, and this one is by far the best of all. Extremely flexible and customizable. I recommend the premium version to maximize the user experience (nope, I am not a bot 😜). I love the barcode scanning and the nutritional label scanning feature that autofills the nutritional info, very accurate. Nice OCR stuff! The only one thing that I wish it had, is a feature to take a picture of your meals. Still 5 stars!.Version: 2.1.8

The data doesn’t accurately arrive in health appThe data doesn’t accurately arrive in health app and that is my high gripe. I hope they update this app to fix the issue. Would also be nice if it would track alcohol consumption..Version: 2.1.7

Doesn’t open, crashes after 1minAfter downloading, app doesn’t open and is frozen on the initial logo page. First time downloading this app on my phone so my only thought is that I have lifetime premium and it’s causing issues..Version: 2.0.9

Way to expensiveMaybe a quarter of the features of some of the free apps on the App Store.Version: 1.9.1

Can't add caloriesLatest version is broken. Press the plus button on the Home Screen of the app and the screen goes blank..Version: 2.1.1

Incorrect Data & No SupportThis app has quite a bit of outdated nutrition data on foods but little way to easily correct it. The custom food feature is a mess and not intuitive. Additionally despite contacting support multiple times the method used to estimate calories burned is off and they refuse to make the change to full HealthKit integration Response to the developer: I reached out a number of times to get a fix for this issue. When it finally was changed, it was only half fixed. Despite providing detailed calculations on how to resolve it the team provides neither an answer or a solution. Currently I have another open ticket as I unfortunately paid for a 1 year subscription and I hope try and resolve it until my subscription ends and I can switch apps..Version: 1.9.11

More of the sameI don’t see this as any easier than say myfitnesspal and if it takes anymore effort than scanning a barcode and selecting how much of that thing you ate it’s not simple, plus I eat very little packaged/ready to eat food or things get laborious. First few foods/brands I search weren’t listed, literally not one! So I gave up and deleted the app because from that point on you’d either use close to what you wanted or maybe add it to the database, at which point from experience of a few of these apps, user entered foods are widely inaccurate/optimistic. If an app isn’t spot on or annoys me in the first few minutes, I bin them straight away..Version: 1.5

I used to love this app. Updates have made it infuriatingI’ve used this app for about 9 months now, I loved it so much I pay for the premium service, it has great customisation options and it all links with apple health The last month or so it has had a massive lag. Every single thing I press I have a 10-20 second lag before it actually acknowledges that I’ve pressed something and it freezes in this time. It’s making logging my meals infuriating Please fix this bug! It’s driving me insane and I paid for a year upfront!.Version: 1.15

Barcode ScannerI’ve subscribed to premium but can’t find anywhere inside the app to scan food barcodes - as promised. Please help..Version: 1.5

Expensive and doesn’t track some macrosI added fiber as my active macro and I input it manually or thru directory in app and it does not track. Seems like an expensive app and might look elsewhere. Update: glitch seems to have fixed itself after a few resets. I guess app is decent but expensive..Version: 2.3.8

Food menuIt’s a great app I love using it but the problem is there not a lot of our food menu on here I’m in SA. Like I’m taking lady shake nd lady bars and liteneasy, hope u can update your food menu...Version: 2.1.8

No Burned Calories :(Great App! I love it except for one thing: no matter how many times i reset my privacy settings to allow Calory to access my health app, it will not connect. What do i do?.Version: 1.15

Barcode scanner is 🔥💩Most foods scanned show up with no results. Apparently no support for Canada. 👎.Version: 1.5.1

Glitchy?Cool concept for the visualization of calorie goals. I tried this app out yesterday and felt like it was rewarding to track at first. It went downhill after lunch: 1. Data base is not nearly as robust as other apps. So, I used the calorie information from those sources. I could not get bar scanner to work as easily as the one on other apps. Not a huge deal to me, but for other users it is. 2. I had trouble getting the date slider at the top of the menu to find the right date. Sometimes it would slide too rapidly or not budge at all. Today (next day) it seems to be working better. 3. The counter seemed frozen a few times and the image went blank when I was trying to login meals. Who has time for that? 4. I finished the day in my target range. I checked the app before bed and it tells me I’m 400+ calories over? I had not logged any additional food. Beyond irritating. 5. Developers don’t put contact email information easy to find on this app or on their website. So, the only option to communicate the bug issues/glitches was in a review..Version: 2.0.2

Promising but immatureI was drawn to Calory by what seems to be a better privacy policy than most diet apps which seem to be all about advertising and selling your data. The data entry is painful but not much worse than others I have tried. But with a few changes it could be much better. There are no instructions so you have to hunt around to figure stuff out. it is not too hard but not intuitive and there are few shortcuts. This is demotivating. The biggest problem is the database is very focused on commercial processed foods. There is no support for real food short of hand entering each recipe and dividing by the serving size for each ingredient. That would take hours per day. Hopefully they will hire a programmer who cooks..Version: 1.5.2

Subscription scam app. Not for Canadian market. So far every barcode I’ve scanned isn’t recognized. I’m talking name brand stuff not recognized at all. Pretty useless until that gets fixed. And the label scanner doesn’t work well either. Ignores half the stuff. If your in Canada don’t waste your time or money in this app As per the response. You are scamming people. You sell an app that has no choice but to opt in to an automatic subscription that only works in two jurisdictions, but you don’t warn anyone hoping to get as much subscription money before people realize your app sucks. Complete scam. Zero stars if I could..Version: 1.9.11

Why doesn’t it let you specify a weightIs it just me? I can’t seem to specify a weight of the food I want to eat? Just the quantity. I end up trying to work out the servings based on the pre-defined weight of an item I look up rather than just changing it to x grams. It doesn’t seem like there’s any data for things like raw chicken. It’s hard to tell if it’s raw or cooked resulting in differences in calories..Version: 2.1.0

Food registry severely holds back the appThis app is everything you could ever want in a food tracking app; it has a gorgeous design, everything is simple to add and its customizable. The UI presentation even makes it fun to add calories and stay within target. Unfortunately, the food registry is the one thing holding back the app, and arguably one of the most important things to get right. A subscription is charged for a more "advanced" registry, but unfortunately it just does not have a comparable database as many other popular food tracking apps, making it a pain to track. If you just need to add calories, this app works wonderful. For anything more substantial, it will not be able to pull its weight compared to other apps..Version: 1.7.6

Beautiful interface, needs work.Had really high hopes for this, especially with the widgets. The UI is absolutely beautiful, clean and simple. How a well designed app should be....no fuss or distraction. However the scanning of nutrition labels is just so intermittent with its success you have to add half the details manually. It also only picks up the 100g category (UK food labels) so you can’t record a serving size i.e 1 slice or 5g. It appears the service size has to be very specific also so I couldn’t write 5g like you’d see on a label but 5 g or 5 grams would work. I’m not sure there is one but the use of a barcode database that it could populate from would be useful so recording foods was easier. Also the ability to change portions type whether it be cup, grams, slice etc. I just gave up when I had to enter most of the food details manually, it’s just too time consuming (no pun intended). I’ll keep my eye on future updates, but at the moment it’s not something I would use and pay a subscription for, it is beautiful to look at, but just doesn’t have an equal amount of functionality with data population..Version: 1.8.1

I really love this appI love this because of how simple it is. So many apps advertise this “calorie counting” service, and they will have endless lists that take someone a full 10 mins a day to input, people are so motivated at the start but then just stop after a while. This one for me works because it’s snappy, fast and fun (I managed to get a blue dot outside the circle!). I only wish you made some of the paid features free but I guess you have to make money Changed: I hate how you keep prompting me to give you money. Tell me once and then never again. I will not buy your dumb premium. 1/5.Version: 2.1.9

Great start - can’t wait for more. This is the closest replacement for the ever-frustrating MyFitnessPal. Support for recipes or ‘plates’ is a little lacking though. I batch cook food a lot and the ability to create a recipe for a given number of portions would be great, currently creating plates requires dividing the amount of all ingredient by the number of finished portions. Keep up the great work! Edit - having used the app more I praised it too soon. UK food database is close to useless, doesn’t have common items and the search feature is shoddy. Shame..Version: 1.4

Bring back the feature which said how many weeks to reach the target weight at pacePlease stop randomly removing features , probably one of the best apps for logging calories but plagued by suddenly pulling features out Bring back the feature where i can customize the pace of gaining weight by moving the slider to set number of weeks to achieve the target weight, it helped me in visualizing the time range.Version: 2.1.8

Great app, if a bit buggyI’ve been using this app for more than a year and there’s a lot I like about it. The Apple Watch app, widgets, counting of burned calories, and it’s simpler design than all the competitors who plaster their services with ads about fitness and the latest fad diets. For a while my only gripes were the small delay between opening the app and the calories burned syncing, and that the watch app doesn’t function standalone meaning sometimes meals won’t sync to the iPhone. HOWEVER after the last update things have gotten worse. There’s a solid delay anytime you add a meal through the iPhone and the existing calorie burn sync delay is now even longer or just doesn’t sync period. As a paying subscriber please fix these issues I would prefer not to have to get a new calorie counting service,.Version: 1.15

Need more food options…This app seems really amazing it’s just very difficult to log my food. Maybe it’s because i’m in canada and the brands are different, but it’s hard for me to even log a simple meal. Sadly.Version: 2.0.14

Lacking features I can find for freeBeautiful app and competitively priced for things like macro counting. HOWEVER, no way to adjust serving size other than adjusting the server amount. So say a serving is 5 and you ate 15, you have to say you consume a quantity of 2.5. It’s easier in a simple numbers but still needlessly complicated. Especially since most apps offer that for free. Logging water is more complicated than most apps. It’s part of what you’re paying for yet you just log it like you would log anything else. If you order anything from a restaurant, be prepared to look online at its menu and manually log everything, even for popular chain restaurant. You can find items through search but it often confusingly labeled and inaccurate amount of calories. It is a beautiful app but overall it sacrifices a lot of functionality for looks..Version: 1.5.2

Antidote to complex alternativesThis app looks great, it is simple and does what it says it will very well with minimum fuss... unless you live outside the US in which case barcode scanning is absent and the food database leaves a lot to be desired. I’ve asked they make mention of this in the description, I almost paid for the subscription before realising I would not get the advertised functionality. I really do hope they can bring the scanner and database to the UK, I so want to dump the better known alternatives..Version: 1.4

Can scan foodsI press the plus bottom and go to press the scan bars code button and all it dose it take me back to the home page, you don’t have all the foods and now I can even scan it how is this ment to work.Version: 2.0.7

Needs an easy way to add macros.Good app but after buying the premium subscription thinking I’d be able to add macro intake the same as calories, I found there’a no way to do this! Only way is adding your own meals which is a long process. Please add this.Version: 2.1.9

Really needs an open serving size valueI have tried all kinds of values in the “serving size” field under my custom foods and it seems to only want “cups” but also won’t allow fractions. This should just be a completely open field so we can fully customize it to how WE eat. For example, trying to enter the cannabis edibles I make is impossible since the portions are so small. I have to use the notes right now to indicate portion size for those. Couldn’t even change it to weight values. This needs to be fixed and made a fully customizable field. Just let us write whatever we want for portion size on our custom foods..Version: 2.0.8

Loving the animationGreat simple product - no frills. Maybe the interface UI could be more developed. But my only gripe is that it does not know the most basic food items, only knows really specific packaged foods..Version: 1.15

OkI got this a week ok and was all good up until today my daily intake of calories is 1,417 calories a day but today I almost had to miss a meal because the app had said I was at 1,617 calories had to rest the app and having to restart tomorrow if it plays up again I’m uninstalling.Version: 2.0.6

So far, so good in V. 1.2 and hoping for many updates and lifetime subscription.Currently doing Clean Keto. With that said, I have used and paid for Carb Manager, Myfitnesspal, and various other weight management apps. Calory has a way to go but have to say was reading the negative and also positive reviews and can see that this developer seems to have the attention and passion to make this the best calorie management tool out there. I am happy to say I’m investing in this young company and app developer. Side note to IOS App Develper(s) Please take some time when considering which direction to go improving the app. With someone that is passionate about Strict Keto lifestyle please learn from other apps (including ones listed above) that focus on diets that include very low carb and Ketogenic Lifestyle. Again, please take the best parts of all the other successful apps and run with it as you have be so successful in doing. I am quite excited to have found Carory and have been very impressed with the many wonderful suggestions from other users and also follow up and quality of responses from the developer. Keep up the great work! Excited to be part of the Calory family!.Version: 1.5.2

No longer workingI loved this app but just got an iPhone 14 and now when I try to put in the same stats as before it’s telling me I can consume 400kcal a day when it was around 1400kcal before, now having to find an alternative.Version: 2.1.6

Navigation lackingI like the options to find food, but figuring out where to log water is hard. Logging it as a meal is likely not right.Version: 1.9

Could be the best food loggerIncredibly well designed. Sadly after years, no Canadian barcode scanning. I doubt there ever will be. The developers kindly replied to this review wondering if I had the camera turned on: it clearly states in your product description that the barcode scanner is US only so has nothing to do with my camera..Version: 2.1.0

Good but has bugs / gapsOverall the UI is nice and simple to use but has bugs and needs some further improvements. Plates keep duplicating foods. Improved Multi Add without additional clicks Better food database as still plenty of gaps It won’t allow to alter the serving sizes Like it over MyFitnessPal only because of the the widget and will still use but needs more updates..Version: 1.15

So laggy, had potential tho :’)Everything lagged and when I went to enter my foods for breakfast it said it was 2,600 calls instead of like 500-600? It doesn’t log the amount of food, it has a set amount already and it was difficult trying to edit the amounts as the app was lagging so much- even though everything else on my phone was running perfectly fine..Version: 1.15

You must pay to use this appYou cannot use without signing up to pay.Version: 2.1.8

Looks good, but limited.Looks like this could be a really cool app. But it has its issues. Very limited food lookups, and doesn’t seem to have many U.K. items which means the calories will be different, thus not accurate. Also the focus on subscription is a pain, especially in the current climate! Some of us just want a nice looking app to help us loose the lockdown weight..Version: 1.9

UselessI just wanted a simple calorie counter that allowed me to add a number of calories per day that I can deduct. This is a huge waste of my time that cost me $50>.Version: 2.1.7

UI needs workIt seems astonishingly easy to enter items for the wrong day, sometimes two days ahead. I’m getting irritated at having to erase entries and redo them. Plus common entries don’t get retained on the Recent list, whereas things I entered once several months ago are still there. Very annoying. Update: it’s getting more frustrating to use this app, due to having NO documentation on how to use some features such as Plates and My Foods. I’m going to start looking for another app. Update: lowered rating to two stars. This program is getting more and more frustrating because things that I use a lot don’t show up on the recent list and things I used once six months ago are still there. What I wish somebody would explain the logic behind this to me. Update: still one of the most frustrating apps on my phone..Version: 2.1.8
