✓ Can’t play if you don’t have a Netflix accountThe AppStore used to be inclusive - allowing everyone with an Apple device to download any game available. Now it’s taken the nasty turn of limiting who can play certain games to those who subscribe to other entertainment providers - Apple’s rivals in many ways. What a shame. The original Wonderputt is still one of my favourite games, & definitely my favourite golf game. I don’t have Netflix & don’t want to subscribe to a service I’d hardly ever use. I would, however, be prepared to make a one-off payment to buy this game, but the option isn’t there. This is a nasty way to run things - excluding fans of the original game (& others), because they don’t want an otherwise unrelated service. It’s a shame the developers think it’s ok to build up the hopes of the original game’s fans - who have been waiting years for a sequel - only to subsequently dash them. In these times when everyone is taking mental well-being issues very seriously, why would a high-quality game-developing team do this? ✓ Pretty but maddeningIt’s odd to me that the game developers chose golf rules for an exploratory game like this. You simply cannot get par most of the time because you have no idea how a certain mechanic will behave, or because a shot needs to be precise but is impossible in the current constraints. The backgrounds and so on are very cool and the new mechanics are interesting, but having a par is unwelcome when you sometimes get an albatross and other times get +35 bogeys. Power will sometimes send the ball flying and then the same power at the next “checkpoint” will barely tap. Within 12 holes of the first course I found myself endlessly repeating holes because the aim and power required to navigate the holes is so ridiculously precise that no one can be expected to actually beat the game without a huge amount of trial and error. ✓ Beautiful Animations but Poor GameplayWhile the level design and animations are well done and often brilliant at times, the gameplay is often frustrating and downright terrible. The golf mechanics are loose and hard to understand. Parts of the courses are hard to see and often the ball is lost behind parts of the courses. Often, the user has no idea what to do or where to go (I assume this on purpose by the designers) and there is no walkthru on certain mechanics until you come across them in game. Making mistakes in other games isn’t as detrimental as this game with no obvious way to restart individual courses. The angle the courses are at is often blocking important parts of the course leading to more frustration. Overall, great world, good animations but poor gameplay and lousy mechanics make for an overall bad experience.
