Manga UP! for Negative User Reviews

Why censor it?I’m not paying for censored manga. Fix this otherwise you may as well delete it from the App Store. It’s an embarrassment..Version: 1.0

Unbelievable Censorship and Overly MonetizedTitle says it all. They aggressively censor everything, almost all of which is something that never needs censoring. The excuse for this being compliance to release products in certain regions, but it both affects people outside those regions and goes overly beyond what would be necessary. On the monetization side, they break chapters into pieces. That in itself is nothing new, plenty of sites do it and it helps the mangaka regularly release content without being pressured. The problem comes in with them monetizing everything at exorbitant prices, splitting their reading tickets/item for a chapter to only include one part, and having next to no free reads per day. To put it in perspective, you essentially pay a volume’s price for an individual chapter. It’s absurd. App needs to be changed entirely or taken down..Version: 1.1.0

Wish it was a sub like shonen jump.Seems to work fine for me, but there definitely are some bugs. Some series state they’ll be updated in 2038– which looks pretty silly. I really want to see Square Enix publish its JOKER comics in English, but unfortunately my biggest complaint is that this apps follows a Webtoons/Tapas style way of publishing— instead of the alternative magazine subscription model with some limits the way the Shonen Jump app is. Additionally some chapters are artificially split into multiple parts. It leaves a really bad impression because the only reason this could be done is to scam money out of a reader by making them pay for 2 to 3 parts just to read one chapter..Version: 1.0

MicrotransactionsThe app has a few positives over other manga apps. There are warnings detailing graphic content, you get a history page without having to sign in. It’s all pretty neatly laid out. Unfortunately it uses a system similar to Webtoon where you “spend” something to unlock chapters. UP, XP, and Coins. Why reading manga requires three currencies, I don’t know. You spend XP to read newer chapters. UP refreshes daily but can only be used to read “normal” chapters, sometimes these can be about 30 chapters, for Full Metal: Alchemist it’s chapter 13 onwards. You can have 120 UP, you spend 30 for a chapter. That’s four free ‘premium’ chapters a day. Coin is described as: “a purchase-only item. When buying “coin” you get “XP” as a bonus.” So as far as I can tell, it’s useless and only serves to give you XP to read non-free chapters. So the cheapest option is £0.89, which gives you 120 coins and 120 XP. A chapter is 60 XP. So the cheapest option gets you two chapters. The most expensive is £69.99 for 2000 XP. That’s about 33 chapters. Frankly I feel Shonen Jump has a better system where you pay £1.99 a month and have access to everything, but if you’re only looking to read FMA or something, you could probably get about 12 chapters for free on your first use. Then four a day unless you pay..Version: 1.0

Square enix’d it upThe app is rather well put together. The UI is nice, reminds me of the manga plus app, and there are series here I never expected to get an official English release so that’s a nice surprise. Now for the bad. Square enix decided to go with the coin system. You buy coins to read chapters apparently. I say apparently because the whole system is very convoluted. There are 3 types of tokens; coins, UP, and xp. The up replenishes once a day and is enough to Read 8 chapters a day, after that you have to pay to unlock, and that chapter only remains unlocked for 3 days, after that you pay again. Their most expensive coin bundle is $80 and it allows you to temporarily unlock 330 chapters. Let’s say a one piece like series of 1000 chapters was pay to read on this app. It would cost you around $250 to temporarily have access to every chapter. Thank god VIZ understood what a dumb customer pay model this was. If you can ignore the extortionate pay model maybe you can also ignore the egregious censoring. Use your free chapters to check out dress up darling to get a sense of how terrible the censoring is. Full on black censor bars covering even a hint of cleavage. Literally blocking Marin’s entire upper body. I wanted to like this app so bad. I wanted to support the official translations of series I really enjoy. I wanted to enjoy the official release of those series. I can’t do any of that at this point in time. The atrocious pay model and the deliberate misrepresentation of the artists works have made this a complete failure on square enix’s part. I doubt they will care to fix these problems which is why the most dedicated fans will continue to source their reading material elsewhere..Version: 1.0

Not goodUnnecessarily confusing to learn about the in app currency to read chapters. Splitting the chapters apart feels very predatory to force users to spend more money..Version: 1.0

Service that could qualify as a scamThe app uses a convoluted currency based system like a video game to read the manga instead of a simple subscription service which would be easier to use and be much less confusing. The chapters themselves are broken up which means it costs more points and coins to read single chapters than it should normally cost. On average a single chapter is in 3-4 parts which uses not only any “free” daily reads you get but also eats away at in app currency you buy forcing you to spend more to complete a series. While the selection is good, many series are misplaced in their respective categories and others don’t make sense to why they were put in certain categories..Version: 1.0

Has censorshipManga is censored. Why bother with this app when you can visit fan translation sites for free on Safari..Version: 1.0

Too much censorshipThey even censored clothes lol.Version: 1.0

Horrible Excuse of a Manga AppOn paper, a manga app with a library of Square Enix and Yen Press titles is a great idea! However the execution is one of the most backwards and anti-consumer practices I've seen for this kind of service. The manga selection itself is solid, having. popular titles like Soul Eater, Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun, The Case Study of Vanitas, and Daemons of the The Shadow Realm by the author of Fullmetal Alchemist, among others. While it's a good selection, it would be insanely time consuming and expensive to fully read even just one series fully. This is due to the app's "point system", which is the only way to unlock chapters past chapter 1. Chapters either cost 30 UP points or 60 XP (why there is a point system at all let alone two types of points, only the "employee who came up with it and should be fired for it" would know). Your UP points automatically replenish every day at 8 AM JST, though with a max of 120 you can only buy 4 chapters with this currency a day. UP points can only be used on "normal chapters", which is a very limited selection. XP on the other hand can be used to unlock "Advance Chapters" which is a majority of chapters, as well as normal chapters. XP can only be gotten through events or as a bonus for buying coins. Yes, there is a THIRD currency system for a manga app. Why? I'll be asking my therapist that same question at our next session. Anyways you buy coins with real money and they work exactly the same as XP, so why this is a separate system from XP I don't know. To add one more wrench into this, chapters you buy can only be read for 3 days after purchase. The system is already confusing and anti-consumer, but when you compare it to the Shonen Jump app, a subscription service that's only $2 a month for 100 chapters a day and has access to every chapter of a much larger and more popular selection of titles, it's clear which is the better deal here. But that's not even touching on the ridiculous censorship this app has. Some manga in the selection provided have scenes which contain partial or full nudity, which in the original version is normally completely uncensored. However on this reader, a majority of these scenes have been edited to have a black box blocking this which just looks absolutely ridiculous. And the censorship is wildly inconsistent, as some scenes with very clear sexual exposure aren't censored and sometimes just a girl's pants are censored despite there not being any nudity or partial nudity here. It's very strange and just makes these chapters an inferior version of what can be read through other methods. Another hilariously bad feature of the app is that screenshots are not allowed. Not even that they're disabled similar to apps like Netflix or Hulu, but when screenshoting you get a warning that repeated screenshots. could get you BANNED. While it's a relatively small complaint comparative to everything else, longer length chapters end up getting split into parts on the app for no reason. This wouldn't be a big deal at all- if you didn't have to pay currency in order to gain access to each part. Between the hilariously bad censorship, ridiculous currency system, and other problems, Manga Up! is a failure of a manga service in every conceivable way. There's potential for it to be good in the future if a majority of its issues are fixed, but in the meantime you're better off getting MangaPlus or the Shonen Jump app instead..Version: 1.0

A points system to unlock chapters? Really? How pathetic and desperate are you?.Version: 2.0.1

OuchListen most times I don’t even get my free 160 manga coins at 9:00 plus 40 COINS for 1 part of an chapter please fix this.Version: 1.4.0

Not greatI only have this because it’s the only way i can read Maydare, everything about this app is garbage, the fact that there’s a stamina system to reading chapters, the fact that they charge points for decimal point chapters, the fact that they threaten to ban you for taking screenshots, all of it is so aggressively, hilariously anti-consumer..Version: 1.2.0

Is ok, but could be so much betterIn my opinion, the system of having points to be able to read chapters is fine, but is a bit annoying that it uses so many, especially when there are cases where the chapters are chopped in 3 or more. Another thing is that, in the few that I read, series are classified as NSFW and yet are still censored (which, if anything, makes it look like it’s much worse than it’s meant to be). If you’re going to give a warning for something, what’s the point of covering it up in the first place..Version: 1.0

Structurally Bad, and CensoredThe app is structured terribly with the whole coin/xp/up system. If such a system works for the Japanese reader (I feel bad for them), it doesn’t work for a global audience. The FAQ page does mention a subscription style membership, but it is nowhere to be seen in the app. To make matters worse, every risqué series is censored. Why have an app age rating of 17+ if you’re going to censor things anyways? The company’s response to their censorship is laughable and they basically told us to purchase their manga on other platforms That could be a better option seeing as the Manga Up’s reading structure (coins/xp/up) would probably end up being more expensive in the long run than purchasing the volumes and a person owning them. This structure only allows you to unlock a chapter for a few days! Furthermore, the chapters are divided into multiple parts, so you essentially have to spend more of your coins/xp/up to read a full chapter since each part is counted as a chapter on this app. In summary, terrible structure, probably would end up being more expensive than buying the actual volumes, and censored. Is there even a reason to use this service?.Version: 1.0

CensorshipBlack bar messes up the whole thing.Version: 1.0

The worst manga app I’ve ever had the displeasure of using.I’m positively baffled at how this horrid software made it out the door. To begin, the way the service itself is structured is still a mystery to me. There are a total of 3 currencies which you use to unlock chapters, and even if you paid for the currency to unlock chapters they’re only unlocked for three days? On top of that, manga chapters are artificially broken into several parts meaning you have to spend MORE money to read everything. If my math is correct, it’s cheaper to buy print for some of these series. At least then you get to keep the manga forever and not just THREE DAYS. Oh, and screenshooting is a ban-able offense. Furthermore, the catalogue of series on offer is incredibly lackluster, too. Lots of vapid, erotic schlock and only a handful of standout series. Even if you find something you’d want to read, the app has issues of blank pages requiring a restart. I don’t understand why they couldn’t have a monthly subscription like other services do. Every single aspect of this app is so blatantly anti consumer that I’m shocked that it launches in the state it did. If they do a complete overhaul of the entire structure of the app, maybe there’s something here- but for now- don’t even think about downloading this..Version: 1.0

I don’t Condone pirating but…I dont really know what Square enix was thinking. I guess everyone can get into the anime/manga space but to not only censor everything to kneecaps to folds in pants and even the letter Y… I think you should just go pirate the manga instead. The worst part is that this app is riddled with micro transactions as well. So we get a scuffed app that has censoring made for anyone under the age of 11 but I gotta pay for each chapter. Yea stop wasting your time here and work on the rest of the ff7 remake. I want people to support the creators original work but its kinda hard to do so with alternatives like this app. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS APP..Version: 1.0

Makes a great argument for piracyMicro transactions are a blight. Doesn’t matter though. This app will be dead in less than a year because it’s so friggin terrible..Version: 1.0.2

Worst appThis is the worst manga app I’ve ever seen the amount of unnecessary censorship’s and in app purchases just ruin the entire app and they can split up 1 chapter into at least 8 parts just so you have to pay more and there’s so many different issues that make this app completely unsalvageable.Version: 1.0

Truthfully there are better apps out thereWhile I love the idea of supporting official translations, this app is the culmination of every bad feature in a manga app. Normally every app has its strengths and weaknesses. Pros usually out-weight the cons, but this one just does everything wrong. Chapters are broken up, too many different types of currencies, nothing “purchased” is permanent only rented, many of the series aren’t even regularly updated and there are no statuses on whether its on hiatus or they’re just behind on translation. There’s also no way to easily check if any of the series you follow gets updated recently other than checking the page itself. I’m sure there are some other things I’m missing but these are the issues that come to mind. Individually, all these issues aren’t so bad because usually you have things like original series, exclusive series, regular weekly updates with some warning why there might not be a new chapter, easy to use or convenient interface, etc. This app is honestly not my favorite and I only check in maybe once a month or two for series I can only find here. Otherwise I’ll just go somewhere else..Version: 1.2.0

Works now but obtuse and screenshot banEdit: This works now but you have currency and gotta scroll all the way to the bottom for free issues, which taking screenshots gives you a warning for a ban. So it works, but is just as bad as my white screen with the initial launch (and no version history to see what is fixed)..Version: 1.0

Absolutely Stay AwayThis is the worst manga reader app I have ever seen. I will start with the most offensive. You don’t purchase anything. You rent the ability to read 1/3rd of a chapter for 3 days. After the 3 days, you have to rent it again. They artificially split every chapter into 3 sub chapters to make you purchase the rental 3 separate times. They heavily monetize everything, with three separate types of currency. They will ban you if you screenshot anything. They also heavily censor everything, even when a manga is rated 17+. Fully clothed people in swimwear are being censored! Got a warning for screenshotting an example of the terrible censorship to show my friend. This is such a bad app and a blatant cash grab, it’s almost funny. Stay far away from this trash fire..Version: 1.0

Really could be betterI feel like it would be way better if it was subscription based instead of having to pay for currency to read. Also having chapters split into 4 parts just to make people pay more leaves a bad taste in my mouth.Version: 1.0

Designed with contempt for readersDo you like paying microtransactions for limited time access to fractions of chapters of censored art? If so, this is the app for you! As for me, I’m deleting this app and I won’t be back..Version: 1.0

Its okIts a alright manga it has some titles then my other manga apps have but the only problem i have is that i wish i can fully buy the app instead of just buying coins to read more chapters.Version: 1.2.0

Censorship and split chapters hurt customers.Censorship is pretty strong as well as chapters being split. This costs more in the long run, and chapters only unlock for 3 days. App is slow and is kinda messy, they need to fix quite a lot to succeed. I would not use this app..Version: 1.0

DisappointingLike everyone says, it’s just renting even if you purchase coins. Confusing at first because there’s UP, XP, and Coins Some chapters can only be ready by using certain ones. Biggest disappointment is the horrid cash grab of splitting chapters. Makes no sense. The one good thing is it has some manga that I feel were unlikely to be licensed/translated. However everything else about this app is very off-putting. Good to have for those series however I wouldn’t spend any money here..Version: 1.4.0

Limiting reading…The currency system is STUPID and there should be a way for me to read the advance manga.Version: 1.0

A joke of an app that is a blatant cash grab. This is without a doubt an anti consumer piece of trash full stop. Not only is the monetization completely greedy and the censorship so unnecessary and intrusive, but the quality of the images themselves is laughably bad. The fact that they charge money for anything this app has is honestly offensive. The only way to make this app work would be to completely change everything about it. You would think a big company like Square-Enix would actually put out something at least serviceable but this is a joke..Version: 1.0

Hope you like your manga HEAVILY censored with intrusive monetization. The censorship is ridiculous in this app, you have black bars over pretty much anything a woman wears that shows more skin than a turleneck sweater. No, even then, it could happen. They’ve put black bars over a woman just standing there in jeans. A woman simply EXISTING is too offensive to be seen without a censor bar. And you can’t read more than like 5 pages in a row without the app bugging you about running out of free views and requiring money. It will do this several times within a single chapter. It’s incredibly annoying and ruins the flow of the manga. It’s monetized like those predatory games that try to get children to tap away money from their unknowing parents’ cards. Do not use this. If you want to support these manga, there are plenty of better options..Version: 1.0

Needs Subscription not Micro-transactionsSquare Enix needs to learn from their competitors(VIZ/Shonen Jump app) and apply a flat subscription fee of $1-5 bucks a month and get rid of this terrible and complicated point system that suckers you into needing to pay an insane amount to complete or catch up on a series.Version: 1.0

GreedyNice titles but ruined with a greedy and confusing monetization system..Version: 1.0

The worst manga app available.Horrid. Square Enix should be ashamed of having their name attached to this low-tier, money-grubbing waste of 15MB.Version: 1.0

You spend money to Rent?I need to spend money to ONLY RENT? And some boxes, not characters scenes, full boxes are blacked out. This is trash. Lots of chapters are now completely un-viewable. All I can see is the character dialog text not what is going on in a scene. Is it even manga at this point?.Version: 1.0

Awful monetization and censorshipLook, I get it. They need to make money but this is insanity. They break up chapters into multiple parts then tout you can read up to 8 free chapters per day if you read twice a day. Then you have to pay per chapter which isn’t a chapter really since they’re segmented. I want to support the industry but this is just predatory. On top of that there are 3 currencies. It makes it super confusing. Oh and when you unlock a ‘chapter’ it’s only for a set period. You can’t go back after a couple days and re-read it. You’d have to pay again to unlock it. On top of that the censorship is purely insane. They put massive black boxes of everything and anything. I’ve seen a black sensor box over a knee. Like what? Viz figured out a solid model. Webtoons has a different but still great model. Just mimic one of those and this could be a decent app.Version: 1.0

TrashI cannot believe SQUENIX is behind this. The image quality is awful and you have to use points to unlock chapters. Just awful. Will not be using this app again..Version: 1.6.0

Not consumer friendlyHaving to pay for each chapter and it only unlocks for a certain amount of time, no screenshots, and a bad layout are only a few of this apps problems..Version: 1.4.0

TerribleIt’s terrible on a “free quality”, but it’s unforgivable for something that utilizes monetization..Version: 1.0

Broken up chapters and convoluted currenciesShameless cash grab. You get enough points to read 4 items which seems like a good deal until you stare for more than 10 seconds and realize they split the chapters up into 4 parts. So you get a chapter a day or buy their crazy currency. Just make it a subscription..Version: 1.0

Needlessly convoludedTirle said it all simply reading chapters has been game-ified in a way no one asked for, nail on the coffin is the deeply absurd censorship of certain titles.Version: 1.2.0

Manipulating and greedyJUMP and MANGA Plus are great services. Easy to access, fair practices for free users, and well-made reading for paying users. This app requires 5, sometimes 6 different purchases just to view a single chapter, and then REMOVES your purchase after a couple days? Square, as a long time fan I’m asking you: please do NOT be surprised at how many fans are going to pirate your content when you make your OFFICIAL ways for payment ethically worse than piracy. Just read JUMP or Manga Plus. Or do what Amazon does, which allows easy access to full volumes on release straight to my kindle every month, which I HAPPILY pay for..Version: 1.2.0

Just takes my money and crashesTwice now I’ve spent paid-for-with-real-money currency in the app and i got an error. It asked me to reopen the viewer after I’d swiped to pay for another chapter. I reopened the viewer and it just put me at the beginning of the previous chapter, did not load the next chapter and reduced my balance by a chapter’s-worth. Well, don’t bother spending real money in the app - you’re not guaranteed to actually get the content you pay for. Really bad service. Update. It’s just done it A THIRD TIME. This time taking 80 coins instead of the usual 40. Well Square Enix, I’m never spending money in this app again. I’ve run out of coins and will not be buying any more..Version: 2.0.1

A manga reader for whalesA passable reader but the monetization is some of the worst I’ve ever seen and actively detracts from the experience. Chapters are split into chunks, and you can read up to 4 of these chunks a day for free. The page count of these chunks is relatively low. Alternatively you could spend one dollar to get the same amount of reading. You can spend up to 230CAD for quite a bit of these points, and without including their weird experience system, you would get about 167.5 full chapters for this price. So 1.50 per chapter. Breaking the chapters up like this also absolutely ruins the flow and is clearly a way to extract more value from the consumer at the cost of their experience and how the chapter is delivered. Between every chunk you’ll be asked how you would like to pay for the next chunk. Ran out of free experience in the middle of a chapter? Tough, give money or come back tomorrow. Some of the pages also get a little weird when there’s a random break in the middle of an action scene or whatever. I have no problem supporting the manga creators but this monetization model is odious and offers a poor reading experience at a massive premium..Version: 1.5.0

Censorship is strongCensorship is extremely high showing a bit of female chest is covered with a black bar.Version: 1.0

Don’t even bother, go elsewhere.I only lasted 35 minutes on the app before deleting for two reasons. first and most noteworthy thing to mention is that the chapters cost 40-90 coins per chapter and those coins can be obtained with money thru the app. normally thats fine, most manga apps have a monthly subscription or the volumes can be purchased as a whole and read that way.. but this app doesn’t allow you to keep the chapters you’ve purchased. they’re merely available to you for up to 3 days. second thing to mention (biggest reason i deleted) is that these chapters that you pay for and are only available to you for 3 days are broken up. i got so confused when i went to read and one single chapter was broken up into 8 segments. EIGHT. 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 etc. each segment costing 80 coins. that’s 640 coins for a SINGLE chapter. i went to the shop to see what the coin prices were and they’re about on par with other apps. 650 coins for $4. which sounds okay but remember, because they split it up, you’re paying $4 for a single chapter. if the manga you’re reading has 100+ chapters and each chapter is broken into 5-10 segments priced at 80 coins a segment.. you’re spending way more money than it’s worth. imo this isn’t the app for me. truly surprised others even use it, there are far better, cheaper options that allow you to retain what you’ve purchased than this - i suggest one of those..Version: 1.2.0

Another Official App to make piracy look betterWhat goes through their minds when making something that is so horrendous like this app? Tons of panels are censored for no reason, chapters are split into 5 or even 8 separate sections that you can’t even buy for free all in one day. Also you can only rent the chapters for 3 days? F that, I could literally find a pirated site that doesn’t censor every page for free in minutes. The cherry on top is that this company literally doesn’t care either and will not stop doing things poorly. If you really want to support the artists, do so through another avenue because I’m 99% sure this company isn’t doing anything to support said artists and only want to micro transaction it’s very few users. Bad app..Version: 1.0
