Learn Cantonese - Free WordPower for Negative User Reviews

Not real cantoneseMy wife is cantonese and doesn't recognize most of the words the app is trying to say. It is useless to learn a language if a native speaker will never understand u due to incorrect teaching..Version: 4.1.1

My goodness, wrong!!Where do I start? So many of the functions just do not work, maybe it's a bug. The 'one' word that the App comes with (afraid) is not in Cantonese, the audio pronounciation is just wrong! So wrong and I don't know what kind of accent it is! 100% wrong. Not even a nice try and it's actually quite bad as this is teaching people the wrong thing which is unacceptable!.Version: 3.2

Not CantoneseNot Cantonese vocabulary, just Standard Chinese words (Mandarin) with Cantonese readings. 係官語、唔係廣東話。.Version: 4.7

Not real CantoneseThis is Mandarin with the characters pronounced in a Cantonese way. It’s not real Cantonese. Disappointing.Version: 5.0

Only supports jyutpingSurprisingly does not use Yale the popular romanization for Canto, thus will be far too confusing for many users..Version: 4.1.1

Very upset with recent update. When I first downloaded the lite version, I was very happy with the pronunciation, so I immediately purchased the full app. I have two problems with the most recent update. The first issue is that the original voice got replaced. I don't mind that the woman's voice is now a man's voice. I'm just very upset that now the pronunciation is totally off. Cantonese is my first language, so I would know. I bought this app to brush up my reading ability. My second complaint is that after updating the app, my full version is now back to a lite version. Maybe I should have purchased the full version through the AppStore instead of through the lite version. There should be a warning letting people know not to update the full version if it's purchased through the lite version. Is there a way to uninstall the update? Update: After over two months of not using the app because I was furious with the issues that the last update has, I decided to give the app another try. Now I'm ever madder than before because I just noticed that some traditional characters are now simplified! Please put out a new update to fix all these problems! As for now, lite and full version 2.3 are not worth downloading. Until the tones and pronunciation are corrected, this app won't teach people to speak Cantonese accurately..Version: 0

SimplifiedThe only thing about this application is that the written Cantonese words are simplified Chinese. That is a big problem for me as when I want to learn cantonese for use in hong kong, Cantonese are written in traditional Chinese, not simplified. Now I have restraints from learning the words in fear of mixing it up in the traditional use. I hope there will be a change from the simplified Chinese to traditional Chinese in the next update..Version: 2.3.3

Pure garbageI am getting two people talking, not a picture not a written word. Maybe this is their idea of how to sell me something. Give me nothing. I have better chinese on my walkman. In this day and age? total garbage do not waste your time..Version: 4.1.1

MsMore than 300mb?? It's a little big for an app. For the free version, there is only one word shown as an example. You need to upgrade to full version, which is £6.99 at the moment to learn more. It's not worthy to wait for loading 300mb for just one word..Version: 3.2.2

Terrible app! Most features don't work at all......only one word is on the app....no update of new words each day. Don't waste your time or money to download it!.Version: 3.2

Not badImproved since my first review..Version: 4.1.1

OkIt is helping my vocab... Slowly. It would be great if the app would also pronounciate the sentences - the romanisation or sentences looks quite a bit off.... I can't make head nor tail of most of the sentences, and I've studied canto for years..Version: 3.2

LimitedOK but limited. It's only day 3 for me but already one word had an incorrect tone indicator..Version: 0

I upgraded and now it doesnSuch a shame. This app is terrible do not take it on...... now mine doesn't work at all and I just cancelled it again after I had built up a great word bank.... it just stopped woking no more new words although it would indicate every morning that a new word was waiting but that was not the case. It's a terrible shame because the concept is good but the application just doesn't follow through..... there is no way I would upgrade to the full version after I have had so much trouble with this one....Version: 3.0

Non-colloquialThis is my updated review. I have the full paid up version. The company fixed some major flaws with version 3.2, such as replacing the muffled speaker with a thick Mandarin accent with a clear Cantonese speaker; adding a complete set of phrases and pictures; and correction most of the pronunciation mistakes. I commend the company for making these improvements on what used to be a mediocre product. Some small gripes include a lack of stability in iOS; the use of Cantonese pinyin instead of Yale romanization; it would benefit by having the option of multiple word banks; I would like to see a larger database of words for food and drink; and the lack of synonyms when there are more than one word for an item (eg. mother, garlic, 21). My major gripe is the use of literal rather than colloquial words; it's a significant enough limitation that would prevent me from giving it more than 3 stars. Hong Kongers just don't use the vocabulary that make up several hundred of the words in this version. It's a stilted vocabulary that is academically correct when written but is never used in daily dialog. It's frustrating that this course isn't trustworthy enough to use without a dictionary to find out which is which. If they can address the latter issue, I would be happy to give my full recommendation this course..Version: 4.0.3

MrsTo many repeat word-of-the-days. Subscribe and you will be bimbarded with email..Version: 4.1.1

Specifically for cantonese101I believe this app is made by the website Cantonese 101. Their lessons -- especially the dialogue podcasts are wonderful! I've learned so much! Their advertising, however, is abysmal. I probably receive at least 1 or 2 emails everyday practically begging for me to be more involved / make more purchases on their website. The wording actually really makes me feel uncomfortable -- subscribe and you'll see what I mean..Version: 4.1.1

Ummmmm..........Every time I open this app, it immediately shuts down. I don't know why but this needs to be improved. Please fix this!!!.Version: 4.7

Waste of timeMy girlfriend is Cantonese and I'm living in Hong Kong now, when I let her hear it she told me its a waste of time as nobody even speaks like that here. And she's right! What I have noticed also is some is mandarin and not even Cantonese. Wasted my time trying to download this..Version: 4.1.1

Reading Chinese Words in CantoneseNot native Cantonese words. Good if you wish to say Chinese words in Cantonese..Version: 5.0

Not very effectiveThis has limited word selection, as there's only one word a day. On one day, it had "skype" as a feature word. From English to Cantonese, it was exactly the same, so what's the point? I'd recommend a different app like lingopal instead.Version: 0

Not real CantoneseThe vocabulary in this app are not spoken Cantonese, they are written Cantonese. If you want to learn how to SPEAK Cantonese, the vocabulary in this app will only confuse you and make you sound funny. The developers obviously just took their Mandarin app and inserted the Cantonese pronunciations. If you are a true language learner, stay away from this app..Version: 5.0

Grrrrrr!!!!!I liked this before update. Doesn't work now. New words don't show in wordbank, but old words are intact. Can't get rid of the annoying red "1" showing over app thumbnail. Crashes every time I open the app..Version: 3.0

Horrid pronunciationThis app fails at its most basic task. The speaker cannot even pronounce a single Cantonese word correctly!! I am not sure if there is even a real person speaking since the diction is so stilted and unnatural...At least I didn't have to pay for this piece of junk so I can use it for entertainment..Version: 0

Very poor pronunciation. I want my money backI downloaded the free wordpower lite hoping this will help him to learn Cantonese but accidentally upgraded it to a full version. That is fine but the pronunciation in this app is terrible. It either pronounces the words totally wrong or it sounds like that it is spoken by a person who has problem with his pronunciation. I certainly don't want my son to learn cantonese from this. No body does. When I went in the app store to find this app cantonese wordpowerlite to put in a complaint and request for refund I found the app Cantonese wordpower which I believed it is the full version of Cantonese wordpowerlite. So I clicked on it and navigate to find the page to in my complaint. It asked me to get a copy before I can put in a comments. I thought I have already downloaded this I might just re-download it again. Afterward I found out they are two different app while the contents are exactly the same. Now I not only have to request one refund but two..Version: 0

MehThey bait you with the promise of free knowledge. But you quickly realize that it's just an empty shell redirecting you to other ressources on other app..Version: 5.0

Don't work! :-(I try it. When I try to click the next page don't work. This app only show on one page only. Waste time! :-(.Version: 3.2

WastersEnraged about having my time wasted. I opened it and started on the 100 free words. Immediately I see the word for delicious is something you'd never ever say. Other stuff is wrong too. Why would a BEGINNER want to learn to read book Chinese (basically mandarin) before learning basic communications words? I sent screenshot to my Canadian friend who speaks natively and he agreed..Version: 4.6

Works wellGood..Version: 2.4

OkNo just don't get This or full nothing to do no stars.Version: 3.2.2

Slightly better than the last versionLooks like some of the pronunciation has been fixed. The male voices are still either muffled or off, but the main female voice is spot on with all the pronounciations. If the next version uses her voice for all the words then I will give a five star rating.Version: 3.0.2

ProblemI downloaded lite ver. and it will constantly freeze while update. The update would restart in the middle, and i cannot even delete the program during update process. This is very frustrating..Version: 3.0.2

Native Speaker? Got to be KiddingI'm a native Cantonese speaker. I was looking for an app that I can use with my children. The female speaker is fine and sound like a native speaker. But the male speaker is speaks with a "foreign" accent. By foreign, I mean he sounded like either he is a native Mandarin speaker and not Cantonese (huge difference) or he must be an American born Chinese who learned to listen Cantonese from his family but rarely ever spoke it growing up. My advise is if you want to use this app, ignore all the words that uses the male voice. Unfortunately, each word/phrase is pronounced only by one speaker and not both. So, you won't get their full vocabulary list..Version: 3.0.2
