✓ Drug-drug interaction checkerA great resource in general and excellent that it is free, however, some of the interaction explanations appear odd. For example, trimethoprim interacts with methotrexate through additive folate antagonism and this is a well known mechanism, but the interaction checker highlights competition for protein binding as the mechanism behind this interaction. Not only is this incorrect it could affect the way the interaction is dealt with in practice as protein binding interactions are typically transient and overcome by equilibrium of drug clearance following a brief period of high drug levels..Version: 3.2

✓ MedScape for iPhone in NZI like the speed with which the answers come up on the Drug Search. Doses, interactions and side effects are immediately available. This can be particularly useful when doing housecalls when away from one's practice computer. The generic names of drugs in the USA are very much the same as those in those in New Zealand where I practice. Other items like news and CME are easily read and pertinent, as ever, with MedScape. For those who find using an iPhone more convenient to use than a home or practice PC this is a useful. Dare I say, it's even handier to read in bed?.Version: 0

✓ Breast cancer treatment disparities among white women vs women of colorAs an elderly lay and white woman this was informative. As was also a caretaker of my adoptive grandson with autism severe IDD as well as seizure disorder for 25 years. He had some severe aggressive behaviors. I ignored my own medical needs. Had Medicaid and fairly recently got belated Medicare at age 72. I’m thankful. However I’m now being treated for breast cancer. East diagnosed in early September 2022, finally got lumpectomies in December then full mastectomies end of December. Am on two meds for HRpositive/ HR 2 negative. It’s extremely difficult to navigate who to call on the medical team. Leaving messages still doesn’t help. Amazing. I know the staff is busy. Treatments seem like I’m on a convayor ( spelling)belt . The waiting…while clock is ticking in the pay parking lot . Rooms are crowded still and worry about what disease I’m about to pick up. I’m no longer employable so it’s money to spend that I don’t have. These are my concerns as an elderly woman . Your informative research helps me realize I’m not alone. ✓ Comprehensive medical appBrilliant, easily searchable diseases & conditions, and then you realise it also has drugs (including interaction checker), and procedures! What's more the content can be downloaded locally so you can access without a signal. Main criticism would be the navigation within monographs - say you want to scan through the content, you have to tap back (sometimes a couple of times to get to top menu) and then tap the next section. Would be nice if a button for the appropriate next/previous sections was included in each section. Although would be a lot of text, perhaps an option to view entire monograph would be good? Also some monographs could do with being a bit more pithy for point-of-care use. Really good overall though!.Version: 2.4.1

✓ Medical Rotations Life SaverAs an MS-3 on the cusp of wrapping up my third year, I have to say this was my GO TO reference source for clinical rotations. A lot of people will say resources like UpToDate and Epocrates are the gold standards, and while they are incredible, neither possesses the ease of use, scope of information, or clinical tools that this app has. I have a paid subscription to those other sources through my school, but this is essentially the only reference I use and it’s completely free for anyone. I originally downloaded this application just to check personal potential drug interactions as I take a lot of health supplements. However I also develop Clinical software and use clinical reference material constantly in my role. This application has an abundance of reference material, pointers to online calculators, formularies, the list goes on. Ideal for anyone wanting almost a one stop shop to portable reference material. Navigation is fluid (I should know I design similar) The screens are crisp and clean. Sometimes with rich applications you lose the fluidity. This however has great ease of use. ✓ Medscape for iPhoneOne of the best apps available: It is totally free and does not contain anoying adds: You can view most of it off line, and there is the ability to save articles to view later when required; you need to be on-line for updates, the best part is that they send you reminders, when new information is available: It has American drugs eg 'acetaminophen' and 'meperidine' but you soon get used to these: It has sections on Drugs, OTCs & Herbals, Diseases & Conditions, Progedures & Protocols, plus an interaction checker that works really well and gives the mechanism and suggestions. There is also a search function for the whole database or just sections eg Drugs or Conditions or Procedures. ✓ Very useful, but used to be better.I often recommend that people use the Mayo Clinic site if they don’t have Sci/Med background, but I send them to Medscape if they do. Unfortunately, both the website and the app are now harder to use than they used to be. It’s not that the information isn’t there, it’s that they’re forcing you to click to the next page and that makes hard too read and share. It used to be possible to forward a chunk of text to people who needed information. But unless you want to make a career out of cut and paste, it’s quite difficult now. This all gets back to the fundamental questions facing the business of medicine today; should an informed citizenry be a goal, or should profit?. I haven't used it in work yet because of mobile phone use restrictions so the BNF is still and probably will be my bible. It is important though to remember that this is definitely not a replacement for the BNF or Stockley's drug interactions or indeed, professional judgement. ✓ Very quick very easy to useI downloaded this app to check my assessment that an elderly patient I was nursing was having a myocardial infarction (MI) after the paramedics said although she was in heart failure her presentation was not applicable for hospital admission. This app proved to me she was showing classic symptoms they were ignoring. She is now in hospital being treated for both MI & a urinary tract infection (UTI). Her family were delighted I insisted in admission. Excellent information including differrentiating between adults and the elderly where sometimes things are confused / differrent.
