✓ Good idea but....Long story short, my mentor and I chose to buy covenant eyes for my computer and phone. Great reviews, people have loved it, etc. the issue I’ve found at least on the phone is this: 1. The app itself is a browser but I have no way of transferring all my saved websites and tabs over to use it instead. Also this doesn’t fully hinder me from just downloading another browser in the night- for those more stubborn- and using that instead, but maybe that’s why; nonetheless I don’t want to use the app browser as I have important websites saved that would take me hours to transfer. 2. In the moment I found a way to get past the VPN. Your VPN only hinders google I found. This meant that I was able to just use a different search engine to still see and get to the bad websites AND the program didn’t even register I went to them; this is a BIG problem for what y’all are advertising. ✓ VPN = Phone IncapacitatedI’ve been with customer service, and I’ve re-installed the VPN at least four times. Within the hour every single time my phone is rendered unable to connect to any source of internet. Not only via apps but also smart devices. I cant connect to my Ecobee or my Wake & Sleep lamp by my bed side, nor my homepod etc. Very disappointed. The mac seems to work just fine. I’m not sure whats going on, and neither did customer service because every time it seems to be fixed, yet again it fails. Its an amazing idea, but if it renders my internet unusable then its not worth it as I need my email for work among many other reasons. Its the VPN that needs a lot of work. ✓ Used to work great. Now have to reset my VPN constantly.We’ve been using CE for years with no issues until recently. Now my husband and I both have to reset our VPN’s every single time we open our phones and try to use the internet. Without the reset, the internet won’t load anything. We have both uninstalled and reinstalled our CE apps, to no avail. This is becoming such a big issue for us that I’m seriously considering pulling the plug, even though I don’t want to. It’s been so nice to have the accountability, but if I can’t use my phone to run my business without taking the time to reset my VPN every time I turn my phone on again, it won’t be worth it. Don’t love the appI love that Covenant Eyes really does a great job at restricting my web browser and the rest of my phone with the VPN, but the app is slow, frequently unresponsive, always takes at least 5 seconds after I open the app for it to do anything, any time I click a link and it opens in Covenant Eyes, I have to go back to me previous app and open it a second time for it to actually work, and it feels clunky overall. This has so much potential! But honestly, if I didn’t care as much as I do about fighting for my purity, I would get too annoyed and uninstall the app. I already have friends that have because of these reasons, and they’re not better off because of it.. please fix these things!! ✓ Phone does not work at all when VPN is onThis worked for a while but a few months ago I noticed my phone would load or call even with full coverage. My phone is old so I chalked it up to that. I use my monitored work phone in place of it. Couple weeks ago I tried turning the vpn off and the phone worked like new! Came here to the app and saw it needed an update. Tried that and it still didn’t work. While later I saw another update. This time I’m pretty frustrated. I’m at church early on a Sunday morning watching my kids. No big deal as i don’t even need my phone right note anyway. Well right outside my church I heard a loud impact and looked out the window and saw a bad car accident. I’m at church early because my wife does worship and I watch a few of the kids. So I’m the only one that saw this accident. I run out with my phone already in my hand to call 911. I has h just updated my phone that morning so I was hoping it would work. Nope. I’m not entirely sure how to turn off the vpn cuz it keeps turning on by itself. I’m trying to call emergency services but it took a while. I thought, “what if me and my 2 boys were in an accident like that and I needed to call 911.” My phone is useless with this vpn enabled. Nothing loads and texts won’t send. Waiting on another update to hopefully fix it but until then the vpn is turned off..Version: 6.2.4

✓ Great idea, bad implementationI love the idea of this app. For all intents and purposes, this app does what I need it to do, and does a fantastic job at blocking stuff I shouldn’t be seeing. That being said, this app does a terrible job at the second piece, which is creating a reliable web browser, especially for the hefty price. Often times, the app just doesn’t respond. Clicking on a URL on another app will bring me to Covenant Eyes, but it won’t search anything. It just leaves me there waiting. Often times, if I need an answer quickly, I will know that Covenant Eyes doesn’t work, and go to my laptop to search something, since the app is just so slow and unresponsive. On top of that, there is no way for me to automatically save passwords. While I love the app for what it does, it is nearly unbearable when it is basically me paying $16 per month to have no web browser at all. Perhaps I’ll just delete my web browsers all together and save a bunch of money. : ).Version: 5.3.8
✓ Difficult to use and isn’t robustSet up was unnecessarily complicated and wasn’t very user friendly. The app seems to be quite buggy as during the set up I was signed out randomly twice. The main problem with this app it isn’t compatible with the in built blocks on the screen time iPhone settings, which are free. As soon as you turn the blocks on, the app disappears? The accountability feature was very appealing to me and my partner but it seems like all you need to do is to switch off the VPN in the settings and the app no longer functions? It’s as simple as flicking a switch and takes 15 seconds. To anyone struggling and wanting a solution I suggest that you use the screen time settings and have your partner or someone else set a passcode on it. One that is random and you cannot guess. That way you can’t simply disable the filter. It’s also not a bad idea to incorrectly put the passcode in deliberately multiple times as it tracks the number of failed attempts. That way if you were to guess the passcode and disable the blocks, it would be evident as the number of failed attempts resets to zero, and your accountability partner would be able to see you have disabled the blocks. This is free and seems to be more robust than this app that costs over £10 a month..Version: 6.2.9

✓ Needs major workI really want to like the CE iOS browser and related VPN. But the performance of both is just unacceptable when compared to other options available for iOS. Browser: The browser regularly freezes. I am constantly having issues with the URL section being hidden and not be able to get it to appear again; which requires me to close the app and open it again. When click a link from another app, say iMessage, I almost always have to go back to the message and click the link again as the first click only opened the CE browser but did not load the page. Also, there is absolutely zero ability to block trackers or ads like there is with every other major browser. VPN: I really dislike that the VPN is required to be used in order to access the browser. I regularly use an actual VPN and having to switch in between the VPNs or temporarily delete the CE VPN is very inconvenient. The mandatory use of the CE VPN doesn’t even make sense. If I wanted to access something I shouldn’t, I can just delete the VPN (which doesn’t notify my partner). So it really doesn’t provide practical protection. Also, the CE VPN regularly causes my Wi-Fi connection to drop or flat-out causes stalled internet connections. Which requires me to turn it off and back on again to refresh the connection and restore an internet connection. Please stop preying on those that are weak in their self-control by charging (a pretty high price) for these underwhelming and underdeveloped services..Version: 5.4.17
✓ Good Idea, Helpful in theory, but just a bad browserI really appreciate the heart behind this browser as an alternative that offers accountability, and I use the software on my computer. However, it's not very effective as a browser at all. It's difficult to use, it consistently has bugs and issues that make it very hard for me to want to keep this app. Because of it's use in helping people stop looking at things online they don't need to be, this should be the best browser available. That would help A TON in not going back to old habits. But it's really not effective at all and it makes it very difficult to continue down a path of freedom when it's so much easier and more convenient to use literally any other browser. Not anyone at Covenant Eyes fault- BUT now I HAVE to set up a VPN to even use the browser? That's not great- and I don't want and I'm sure my employer doesn't want my work email getting sifted thru some VPN they're not familiar with. I'm sure this is great for those that want/need it- but give us the option. Don't force it. May consider canceling my subscription. More recently server connection issues block apps, thus making them useless. Again- bring a non VPN option back. I know it hasn’t been long since I edited this, but it also slows down and blocks my voice mail when it cannot connect to the covenant eyes server. I’m getting close to canceling my services. If some of you are like me and in a period of transition where your internet access is from public/shared WiFi networks, maybe you also feel my disappointment at how this accountability program doesn’t work with VPN encryption. Currently on a CE hiatus so I can use VPN encryption because I don’t trust airport and shared living WiFi; I don’t know the people I’m around and I don’t fully know what security standards are in place. Not going to pretend like I know the solution here, and I acknowledge this isn’t a small ask. But can’t there be some way where I can encrypt my overall traffic but still have CE send my accountability date to my trusted partners? ✓ Service is great. Browser needs some workThe Covenant Eyes service is great with the accountability and tracking, etc. My big complaint is really with the Covenant Eyes Browser. Unfortunately the browser is not fun to use and allows all the ads that Brave currently blocks which can lead to ads contributing to un-desired content being shown. I can't control what an ad shows so without blocking I am at risk. Thus, I don't use the Covenant Eyes browser right now. Once an aggressive ad blocking feature is added I'll be down for using it but up until then, it is a worse web experience than using a different ad-blocking browser such as Brave. Another possible way to go would be to provide a browser plug-in so I can have the accountability features (monitoring and url filtering, etc) regardless of the browser I am using. I don't know if this is a possibility but it would be great not to be tied to the Covenant Eyes browser for all of the features to work..Version: 5.4.16

✓ A HUGE FLAW in this appThis app could be great, except for 2 things. If you visit a bad site, it sends the actual NAME of that porn site to your ally, which then tempts that person to go and look at that site. The biggest flaw though, is that you must set a ScreenTime password for this app to even work. Why? Because the app can be uninstalled if not. The issue there is, all the struggling person has to do is go to that screen time password section and click on “Forgot Passcode”. That will email you a link to reset the passcode so you can disable or uninstall the app all together. This application should email the ally if/when the app is uninstalled. That shouldn’t be hard to do. Either that or allow the user to set a password so that this app cannot be tampered with. That way, I could have my wife set up the password for that part. This flaw renders the app completely useless for those struggling with porn on an iPhone..Version: 6.2.0

Filtering is usually great, though, so it's generally worth these (usually uncommon) bugs, so I would consider this app worth it, except for one oversight- my phone's memory is full of caches, and I can't clear my Safari cache without my accountability partner's help to briefly unblock Safari, but I can't meet with my accountability partner until after quarantine, because of their immune-compromised family members. If it was possible to clear all caches from within the Covenant Eyes app, this might come up to a 4 star rating. ✓ Great Service, Mediocre AppCovenant Eyes is a fantastic service, and I am so appreciative of how their service has helped to eliminate temptation. Unfortunately their mobile app, at least for the iPhone is mediocre at best. The app is very buggy and often slows the internet on your phone to the point that it is no longer usable unless you either restart your phone or delete and reinstall the app. Obviously, one doesn’t want to delete an app that you are using to stay accountable, as that would raise unnecessary suspicion. Covenant Eyes has released certain versions of this app that have been more stable than others, but it feels like once you have a good version, they push an update that bricks your phone until you do one of those two things. I am pushing through it despite its inconveniences because purity is worth it, but I eagerly await a complete overhaul of this app that can help protect me while also leaving my phone useable 100% of the time..Version: 6.2.6

✓ DisappointedAfter updating to iOS 14 the software made my phone inoperable. I could no maintain an internet connecting for more than 30 seconds on both wifi and cellular. I had to uninstall CE to do anything that required an internet connection. I reached out to CE and submitted the same info at least 3 times but never received help beyond the submission and ZERO response even after I followed up. Then watch whatever I want, safari still allows me to access porn sites even when everything is still installed and “up and running”. ✓ Doesn’t catch everything and buggyThe app was working fairly well for a while, but it zooms in on some pages with video players for some reason, and good luck getting it to load more than one video in a row. The UI is clunky, it has slow load times every once in a while, the safe search seems to be permanently on, and it does not catch some things. It seems like incognito modes in other browsers don’t set off accountability as much. Haven’t tested it on porn sites, but it will usually flag Reddit or other pages when not using the mode, and as far as I can tell will not if in private browsing. This app will catch things like Instagram-linked questionable sites, which is much appreciated, and it has definitely improved over time. It is a valuable tool for fighting porn addiction, but the bugs and the clumsiness can be absolutely maddening. Safesearch all of a sudden being an enforced thing across apps is also not something I want, but it isn’t necessarily bad. I would recommend its use, but make sure your accountability partner asks you specific and uncomfortable questions often, because there are still plenty of ways around this accountability software..Version: 5.4.15

✓ Potentially Life-CorrectingThe VPN runs flawlessly while running and blocks everything except materials viewed through apps like Twitter, Tumblr and Reddit. It even locks any browser into safe mode. Sadly, almost all this is negated if you are trying to quit on your own device because the VPN can simply be switched off. That’s such a fatal loophole for any efforts to quit. Apple’s VPN settings are not locked down, leaving one option: Lock down any apps with mini-browsers in addition to apps that can play porn through their native interface. Then leave Covenant Eyes as the only browser. This is a Herculean task because apps change and monitoring which have mini-browsers is a pain. Old Update: CE still randomly hijacks my phone for long periods of time and no app will work until the VPN resets. Of course, Covenant Eyes suggests I call them, but shouldn’t the app just work correctly? As a parent, I appreciate the mission and work of Covenant Eyes. CE generally works beautifully on all our computers (Mac and other). However, the CE app on iPhone slows almost every other app to a snail’s pace—even the CE browser is slow. Many apps take forever and ever to load! My spouse and I decided to do a test: I’d remove CE for a week from my iPhone and go back to Safari as the browser. Sure enough, my phone’s performance was SO much faster—so much better (all apps)! I reinstalled CE today because we want accountability and filtering on all our devices. Now, I’m back to very S L O W speeds on almost every app. It’s frustrating considering we pay about $180 a year for CE. I’m thinking there must be something near this price point that works better without a massive slow down on your phone OR maybe something that slows your phone down as much as CE does but doesn’t cost as much. ✓ Misses loads of detailI deliberately used my hubbys phone on various apps and websites and low and behold, nothing logged. I see him using it and it is not logging it. If it fails to log minor issues I have no confidence in it logging the major ones. Plus NO urls work to see what the content is and it throws in their background apps - so things that are not clicked. Stupid app, stupid system, not worth the money. ✓ Browser incredibly incompatibleOverall, I applaud CE in terms of functionality and accountability. I understand that it’s pretty unique how they have to go about it with iOS. However, the replacement browser leaves much to be desired. Functioning as strictly a browser, it’s not too bad. But whenever it opens up as an “authentication” pop up or what have you for a game etc., it’s rarely if ever works. I have to get my accountability partner to temporarily “unlock” safari to update my games and such. When you try to cancel within the app it says something to the extend of “due to protecting members this function is not enabled”. That’s crazy - it’s says to contact costumer service. I have done so twice asking them to cancel my subscription. It is still charging me every single month. I’ve been paying for 4 months after I tried to cancel. This is unacceptable and more aligned with a scam than a reputable app. I don’t even know how Apple allows an app to disable the function to unsubscribe. ✓ Months long issues/new issue freezes and shuts downThere’s a lot of good about this app. Overall it’s really helped keep me accountable. However there is an annoying issue with the notch that loads a window with the search bar on the notch, forcing you to reload the window. It’s not that big of a deal but it’s annoying. I’ve been waiting months for an update to the app to fix this. The other issue that has cropped up recently, and is what prompted my (negative) review, is that the app will load onto a blank window that doesn’t let me do anything. The only thing that generates a response is pressing the button that normally brings up the multiple windows. But instead of bringing up the saved windows it crashes. This happens several times. When it finally loads a screen that brings back normal functionality, all of the saved windows are gone. ✓ Great accountability, terrible browser.To be clear here, I’m reviewing only this app and not the covenant eyes service in general. I’m a huge proponent of what covenant eyes is providing with there screen accountability services. The PC version of their service has very few issues and gives the protection I want for my family. That being said, this app is almost not usable for me. It’s slow, glitchy, and often freezes or crashes doing simple tasks. Furthermore the user interface is just clunky. It makes me feel like I’m using an old iPhone 3 iOS or something. I really like the direction they are going with the vpn monitoring activity over the entire phone, but I’m not sure how much I can trust it at this point. It is crucial for someone like me to have a responsive and reliable browser, and this just doesn’t make the cut so I’m often having to fall back to less protected browsers which kinda defeats the point of paying for this service... ✓ Possibly the worst mobile browserI want to start by saying that I am very grateful for covenant eyes and the accountability that it offers. It is a great tool and has been of great benefit to me and my family. In that sense the app gets five stars. This review is based purely on its functionality as a web browser. Very little ability to customize. The interface for choosing a bookmark or home page is not intuitive at all. When I want to find something in my search history, the list will usually glitch and go out of order. I have experienced frequent crashes, it will not open to the most previously viewed page (which is a necessity in my opinion), and there do not appear to be any settings that would affect it. ✓ Phone is unusable unless browser is open in backgroundSo with the recent update that uses a VPN to track everything on the phone, I thought “what a great idea”. It was just another way to keep everyone more accountable. Well my happiness was quickly turned into sadness when I could not longer text, use my apps, or call people. Yes for a whole day my phone was completely useless. The only app that worked was the Covenant Eyes app. (I am the type of person that closes an app out, once I’m finished using it. I don’t like to have a bunch of apps running in the background) So at one point I didn’t close out Covenant Eyes and I let it stay open in the background. It was at this point I started to receive texts that hadn’t been coming through, and I noticed that my other apps started working. Basically the VPN connected to Covenant Eyes blocks my phone from connecting to my cellular network unless I keep the browser app open at all times. This is not okay!!!!! On top of all of that, the app is buggy. It constantly asks me to sign in, it constantly deletes all of my open tabs, and it constantly crashes. Sometimes it crashes and I don’t realize it and then if people have been texting me, I don’t receive anything. This app has really become a problem. The use of a VPN was a great idea, but it has never been perfected. It’s almost like they released it without testing it first. ✓ Good but could be betterI’ve been using this CE on my laptop for at least two years or so and it’s great. Initially when I setup an account I wanted to use it on my phone as well. This is where the problem is, it can’t block everything. If I were to use twitter on my phone I can easily access explicit content when I have a lapse. Since my phone was what I struggle the most with since it has quick accessibility. I’ve been able to have a close a friend put a lock on my phone to block explicit content which is helpful but even that doesn’t block everything. If somehow you can develop a feature that blocks certain apps then this app would be great. I also recall that the only way to use the app on the phone is to use their web browser which doesn’t help either because what about the other apps? If I didn’t have a lock on my phone to block content then this app would be really useless. ✓ Absolute garbage!For what I pay for a subscription and the claims that are made, this mobile browser is absolute garbage. I have to fight constant app crashes, slow searches, and after the last update it’s not even working after “minor bug fixes”. ✓ Great product but the new version has issues(Downgrading my review because I’ve had more issues with this VPN. It makes Uber and lyft and Google maps all break and so I continually have to remove CovenantEyes from my phone making it useless – Covenant eyes people – please go back to a having a non-VPN option at least before I need to cancel my subscription) This is a great concept but the new version has some issues. It uses a VPN connection to CovenantEyes servers. The result is that you are going to get certificate errors in some applications such as Google maps or Google email. I’ve had Google maps sometimes not work until I uninstalled CovenantEyes. I’ve also had continual certificate errors when using Google mail. I’ve also noticed some slow down and performance impacts when CovenantEyes was enabled they go away soon as I delete it. From time to time I find websites that don’t work in the CovenantEyes browser but they do work in Google Chrome. Overall this is a great product but they need to work on the new VPN Based version as it’s a bit clunky in its first release.Version: 4.1.0
✓ Terrible Canceling ProceduresSo I want to preface this review by saying that this is a great concept and actually works pretty well! I don’t have any complaints with the functionality itself. My gripe with the company is that if you want to cancel, they have no ways to do this except over the phone. Almost all companies have modern way to just cancel on the website or send and email. With this, you had to call. What made this even more uncomfortable is that when I called, I spoke with a woman who was asking me if canceling would be a good idea and asking to think about if I needed the accountability. Thanks, but a random woman I’ve never met is the last person I would ever want to have a conversation with about this stuff… I understand they want to help and keep people in their program, but in my opinion it is extremely uncomfortable and super cringy the way it is set up. ✓ Did not work and caused issues on MacMy fiancé wanted to download this to use to help and we tried setting it up, now our Mac is freezing, never was able to fully install. He tried searching for things on his phone to test it out and see if it blocked, on the phone it did. However under activities nothing showed up even with him searching free porn. However on the laptop we could not get it to work, it would either just say this app is closed, or our Mac started freezing and now we can’t even get it off of the computer. Luckily we did not install it on his other Mac which is his work computer yet. The support was very helpful, but we were not able to get it working and with our now new computer issues we requested a refund which they were wonderful about and did give us that. ✓ Do not trust this site.My son was in trouble for looking up two sites. While he was grounded he lost his phone privilege. He had told me twice he didn’t look up anything and I did not believe him. He didn’t have his phone for nearly two weeks. After about one week I received a notice to check his report. It showed he had looked up sites that were inappropriate, even though I had his phone and it had been turned off. I contacted Covenant Eyes because I wanted a refund. Did they care that this caused my son to be grounded or could have caused a huge fight with my husband? No. They said there was glitches and that they were working on them. Then they said they couldn’t reimburse me because it was past 7 days since the day I was billed. This is not a Christian application that will help. Their integrity is not shown in their customer service. I don’t know about you but I believe God will show me when there is anything going on in my household. ✓ Very frustrating...browser keeps crashingI will start by saying that I love this concept, and the older version was great. My family uses the filtering and accountability on all our devices. However, the latest upgrade has made the browser completely useless. It constantly freezes when you go to use the browser...and by constantly I mean constantly. I cannot even do a simple google search with the browser. After typing a few letters in the search box, it stops and you can type not more. It just freezes until you close out the app and start over again...and again...and again. The older version browser would periodically freeze and then respond after about 10-15 seconds. I thought maybe I needed to update so I checked and sure enough there was an update. That was a huge mistake. I should have never upgraded. There is no consideration that perhaps the customer experience could be improved if the customer was listened to. I constantly get a pop up telling me that there is a google chrome addin for covenant eyes. Why does CE consider that they need to keep annoying me with this when I have tried to make it clear that I don’t want the addin. I don’t care that CE thinks that I should have it. I should be able to opt out of this annoyance and no longer be watching a movie on my browser and have it interrupted by CE popping up to tell me to get something I don’t want. But what I’m not grateful for is how poorly the business is run from a technological standpoint. They are pretty much the authority on what they do and they literally have not figured out how to make a VPN that works well so that you can actually, and regularly connect to internet/emails/etc, when you need it. While I’m grateful for the service, I have been in WORK meetings where my phone just has gone limp, literally in Starbucks while connected to wifi— unable to search anything from social media to email, on my phone because of its terrible VPN technology.
