First Words Deluxe for Positive User Reviews

Very coolOur 2.5 year old son has been playing for hours with it..Version: 0

Awesome Learning App!My son is almost 4, he's autistic and loves letters. We've been told he'll probably learn to read and or spell before he is able to talk. 1. The app is easy to get the letters to snap correctly. Other apps are too precise and it causes frustration. 2. You can change the settings so that you can spell in any order or in order. After a while I switched it over to in order and my son has since mastered this spelling things like Pentagon or triangle or other big words in less than a couple seconds. 3. Just discovered you can toggle the hints. Now we've turned it up a notch. He has to spell the words from memory and in order. 4. When you tap the picture of the word you have to spell it says the name of the object out loud so they can also associate the sounds with the order of letters. This app is well worth the money! The art and animation are very basic but that's OK because our goal is identification of the sounds, spelling, and further driving the recognition of letters. Have had the app for about 1 year now..Version: 7.1

Its okayMy daughter learned each letter sound by using the bobs books app. I was looking for a similar app so I bought this. She doesn't seem to like this one as much, although it is a similar concept. The other one allowed her to put sentences together by spelling one word at a time. Helpful hint though, go into settings in this game and change it to phonics so the letter sound is said and not the actual letter..Version: 5.5

Great app, improvements on the wayI like this app. My toddler likes this app. Yes it's annoying that there isn't a British version, but they are working on it. And as for the hog complaint in an earlier review, it's a British word too, look it up..Version: 5.2

FW DeluxeThis is the most modern learning tool that my 3yr old has used to learn how to pronounce & spell words, it's just amazing to watch him repeat words then spell them, his school teacher was stunned to see him describe words that he wasn't due to learn until next year..Version: 0

My 2 year old loves it!He just turned two last month and found the lite version on my tablet. He sat and figured out each word in it by himself. After he finished playing it, he wanted more so (and I don't normally do this) I broke down and bought it. Best $5 I have spent on an app in years! He's already been through the vehicles and color parts by himself, and just started back on the vehicles. I'm lucky to have gotten the tablet time to write this review. Very easy for a two year old to play, and he's getting the matching down and recognizing sounds that the letters make after one day already. Kudos and thank you for a great and fun learning tool!.Version: 5.5

SuggestionThanks for a great app. My autistic son loves it and plays with it all the time. Just a suggestion though, could you please make the 'reward sound' optional as sometimes my son is sensitive to the noises. Thanks :-).Version: 4.1

Fantastic appAfter playing quite a bit with the light version, we ended up buying full version of this app for my son. It is the same, but with a huge number of words to choose from. This is a great app for beginning spellers! The screen shows the word spelled very lightly. your child has to drag the letters into the correct spots to finish the word. When they do, the word is spoken, and the picture of the word becomes animated. This is a quality app, and it kept my sons's attention for over a year. He still goes back to it. I would recommend it..Version: 5.5

SuperbMy son is 5 and has autism.... he LOVES this app. I heard of it from his kindergarten teacher, who uses it on iPad at school. There are 5 autistic children in the class and it has been popular with all of them. When I got it for home iPad use, I thought he may get tired of it, but he uses it daily and still learns from it. Can now spell so many words! Thank you and please keep adding more words to it with higher difficulty! Let it grow with them! Worth every penny..Version: 5.2

Approved for KinderTownFirst Words: Deluxe brings together 5 sets of thematic words that support your beginning reader to build simple words, sound by sound. For children already blending sounds, First Words becomes an app for practicing spelling. Parents can set up the appropriate environment for their child by adjusting the variety of settings. Familiar, thematic words paired with colorful pictures for young children and options for parent customization is what make this app a success. We recommend this app, and the other learning touch: First Words apps, because they give kids an opportunity to play with building words. We are glad that they do not attempt to teach words with phonics sounds that do not follow the beginning phonics rules. This would be very confusing for young kids. The apps still give kids a chance to learn letter patterns while they are exposed to print in meaningful ways. It would be wonderful to have more word lists available, but for the price there is a lot of good content in this single app..Version: 5.3

Fun to learn appMy child has cerebral palsy and she loves this app. Would be great if you could move the box with the word you have to spell to be in other areas of the screen. It's hard for her to swipe up. So if you could move it she could swipe down or across instead..Version: 5.3

Great First iPad App for ToddlersMy 3yr old son loves this game and it was his first. Having never used the iPad before, you just set it down in front of him and he immediately figured out the dragging action and now he loves to spell words, then say them after the full word is placed. He has learned many, many new words from this app, including all of the shapes. Its a beautiful app with a nice snapping action and sound when you get the correct letter near the correct space. Part matching game (lining up the letters) and part word-teaching game, its great for special needs kids (my guy has autism). Tried the free version and there are maybe 10 words and he loved it so I just went straight to the "Deluxe" version instead of buying all the individual ones. Upon startup, it lets you pick from all the individual categories (vehicles, animals, at home, colors, or shapes) or ALL WORDS. Great deal for all those words! My autistic son will literally play this for 2-3 hours! We of course have to stop him most of the time but for long waits like plane or car rides, its great to have this tool. Only problem is that I can no longer use my iPad for if he sees it, he immediately wants to play! Good problem to have though....Version: 0

AllyBest game ever.Version: 5.1

The bestMy 15 month old daughter love it. amazing how this app helped her learn arranging letters at her age. bought her own itouch then put bunch of educational baby apps in it but this is her favorite one. definitely recomend it.thanks :).Version: 2.0.2

FunPlease do not create games, shirts, or post comments about this tragic event. We understand that you intended this to be a respectful memorial, but we can't risk having other players behave in an inappropriate manner in or around the content you’re posting..Version: 8.2

Like this app a lot!My two year old has been loving this app. It keeps her occupied for awhile. She is exposed to new words and is able identify the alphabet that spell the words. I don't feel guilty having her play with this. Good stuff!.Version: 5.2

Brilliant app20 month old loves it. Helps learn through repetition. Highly recommended..Version: 5.5

Xmas Santsleigh Elk Bear Bird Cat Duck Learning TouchFirst Words Xmas.Version: 8.1.1

No-Fail Design - wonderful app!My 4 year old autistic son loves this app! He can't put it down. He's spelling, reading and cheering for himself. The best part is that it's designed to be a no-fail app...for a special needs child who gets frustrated easily, that's important. Great motivator and fun graphics are entertaining!.Version: 0

Awesome AppI have autistic twins and this app is helping my wife and I alot. Definitely recommend this app..Version: 5.5

Great appMy 2 year old can now recognize letters and spell simple words. Awesome..Version: 5.2

One of my 2 year-old's favoriteWorth the money. We started out using the free version and bought this one several months ago because our child had memorized all the words by 18 months. It's great how it says the letters and that they only have to get the letter close enough before it pops into place. She's tried playing similar type puzzle games but can't do them without help because you have to line up the pieces exactly in the space before they stay. This one is perfect for a toddler's fine motor abilities. I know it has helped her letter recognition ability. I wish I had had this game for some of my students when I taught first grade..Version: 0

My 15 month old loves this appSometimes as a parent you try everything to soothe your child and nothing seems to work. I think many of our littles ones could be considered iPhone babies or smartphone babies and mine certainly is. I give my 15 month old son my phone to play with and he loves this app. He loves to hear the words and the sounds of the words. He's still young to spell it out himself so I help him but he's absolutely mesmerized by the colors and sounds. If you need to occupy your toddler and have him/her learn at the same time, then this is a great app and worth a one time $5..Version: 5.1

GreatLove it.Version: 5.1

My 2 year old loves itEasy introduction to spelling. Good graphic great app.Version: 5.5

My 2 year old really likes itThis app finally got her off that monkey game which didn't teach her anything. I took off one star because of the price, I already had FirstWords: Animals and there's no way to upgrade so I had to pay a whole $4.99 which I think is overpriced. Having said that, my wife doesn't think so at all. It's just that I bought Gameloft's NOVA for the same price and I'm sure the production costs a lot more. Anyhow, this definitely is a must have app for your little ones..Version: 0

Fantastic!!!My 2 year old loves this game. She asks to play it whenever she sees me using my phone and would play it till the battery died on my phone if I'd let her. She places the letters in the proper spots with ease, shouts out the word she spelled and claps when she's completed each word. This is by far her favorite game app..Version: 0

My niece LOVES this application! My niece started playing with this app at 18 months and took to it immediately. I'm not sure if she understands the concept of the letters yet, but she easily arranges the tiles correctly and repeats the names of the pictures. Also, she likes to ask, "What's that?" whenever a new image comes on screen. I LOVE IT! Highly recommended. The Deluxe version is worth the $5. :-).Version: 0

The best for kids! This app is totally brilliant. It is easy enough for the kids to play on their own but awesome enough to keep them entertained for ages. My 3yr old autistic son loves it. He talks along with it. Loves the spinning pictures & sounds. We tried the sampler first & loved it. This is the one to get. It is better than the other packs as it includes more vehicles, animals, house stuff, etc than the individual apps does & at $5.99 is heaps better than 4 times $2.99 & having to switch apps. Highly recommended purchase. Hope they keep updating this with more stuff if the good reviews keep coming..Version: 2.0.2

2-year-old can't get enough of thisOne of the best apps ever for young children. My daughter started with this when she was around 18 months. She's 24 months now and it's amazing to see how her play has evolved with this app. She used to just tap and push things around. Now she delights when she identifies a word with two of the same letters in it. "This has TWO Os!" She taps the letters and repeats them and completely understands the mechanic of sliding the letters to the bar above. The sound and spinning image is a great quick reward for completing the word (positive reinforcement is so important for young minds.) I love the wide variety of words included in this app too - my daughter loves picking "Shapes" or "animals" or whichever category first. Great work Learning Touch!.Version: 2.0.1

Best children spelling appI purchased this after trying the lite version and my children love it!!!!!! My 2 yr old spells the words and repeats the letters. It has been great. I have even handed the iphone to my friends children and they love the app too. Even children that have never played with an iphone before can pick this app up and play it and love it..Version: 2.0.2

Perfect Word Learning Tool For ToddlersWithin 1 minute of playing with this app my son recognised what he had to do to complete the task. It's a great party trick too... looks like the kid can spell :) Mind you, it's early days yet, but I'd imagine after a couple of weeks working with this fantastic learning tool, he'll be able to spell. Great work Learning Touch! Easily worth the $5.99..Version: 2.0.2

Addictive appMy son is obsessed with this. It is truly helping him with his language comprehension..Version: 5.5

My son's favorite app! This is by far my son's favorite app. We let him play with it using the letter hints "on" initially. When we turned off the letter hints, we were surprised when he was able to spell most of the animals correctly. Would love to see the ability to customize and add new words (with the ability to add a picture and sound) in a future release..Version: 2.0.2

Just awesome...one my sons favoritesI have a 2 yr old autistic son and this is one of his reinforcers in therapy and now from 5months not talking he is attempting to repeat the words. Colors are bright, animation is fun and not too distracting, I looooovvveeee how with this program if he gets one wrong it doesn't say try again it allows him to correct himself.Version: 5.2

MsMy daughter used to play this app on my sisters iPhone 3 when she was 1. And now she plays it on mine and she is 3! And still enjoys it!! Thanks for such a great app and helping to teach my child how to spell, read and write!!! Love it!!!.Version: 5.1

Keep them Quiet!!This is superb! Keeps my 22 month old son entertained whilst out and about, particularly when having meals, coffees etc. Useful settings (turning off assists and voice) allows this to get harder as the child learns the words. Free samples are available - I would advise trying those out. Hopefully we will see a similar product with foreign words soon!.Version: 0

Love this app for early literacy skills! In settings there is an option to make the user spell from left to right. Everytime you select a letter, the app says it and then will spell the word and pronounce it. My three year is definitely engaged and will repeat the letters along with the app!.Version: 6.0

Alphabet matchMy two year old loves this game..Version: 5.3

3 yr old autistic son can do it!I love this app!!! My son is 3 and almost completely non verbal and he loves this app! I wasn't sure when I purchased it because I wasn't sure if he could figure it out but he did! He's even starting to repeat some of the words when he gets them right! I would highly recommend this app, especially to parents of young autistic children!.Version: 5.1

Solid app for early learningI like that the app has a very clean and straightforward user interface. You could progress into the first words activity without confusing menu buttons. The Home button, options, and settings were all organized, and seemed to be differentiated in the right places for parents versus kids..Version: 5.3

18 month old loves itI didn't think my eighteen month old son would be able to use this app, but after I showed him how a couple times he now slides the letters into the slots easily on his own. This seems useful for honing his fine motor skills, as well as exposing him to letters and first words. I initially wanted to find an app where he could simply slide things around and get used to using the iPad, but this is so much better. My only minor complaint is that the animations are basically all the same and could be more interesting. All in all, a wonderful learning app for toddlers..Version: 0

This is goodI like it because it is good and fun..Version: 8.0.2

FantasticMy 20 month old loves it. Well worth the money and lots of scope.Version: 4.0

GREAT APP FOR TODDLERS!My 19 month old daughter LOVES this! Ever since she started playing the demo version, shes been running around "spelling" anything and everything that contains letters! Shirts, books, etc. Really excites me that she took such an interest in learning from the app so I decided to purchase the full version! $5 is a great price to pay because this keeps my toddler occupied for a long period of time..best part is that she is learning and having fun at it! :).Version: 4.1

Fantastic learning toolMy two year old daughter has been playing this game for coming up for a year & is constantly astounding people with her ability to name pretty much every colour, point to magnetic letters on the fridge when asked where each letter is & name them if you just show her the letter, &, perhaps not such a good thing, she can recognise a few words if we try to spell them out to try to get one over on her! No getting C A K E past this one unfortunately...! Just a shame it has a bug at the moment, otherwise it's wonderful!.Version: 0

Great app to help kids learn their first wordI like this app and it's really great for young kids in helping them practice and to learn their first word. Each of the word letter is sounded so they can really get familiar with the word via sight and hearing. There are lots of words in the app to keep the kids busy for a while..Version: 5.3

Fantastic appBoth my girls (4yo & 2yo) love it! Thanks!.Version: 5.2

Wish it would sound out the wordsOverall my 2 yr old really liked this app. If there was an option to sound out the letters vs. Just having the letter read, that would improve the value and longevity of this app. He's starting to get bored with it but it did really help him learn his letters quickly!.Version: 0

Best Word App Ever!My 6 month old is eating this up! This is our "go to" for extended car rides!.Version: 5.1

Not optimized for iPadLove the game but disappointed that it's a small screen optimized for iPhone and looks somewhat fuzzy in iPad 2x view mode. Also, can we please use more common words for common animals/objects? My 2 yr old has a problem every time Mule comes up for the animal he knows as a donkey. Same thing when he encounters a ferry instead of a boat, a semi instead of a truck, etc..Version: 0

A favoriteThis is a favorite of my three year old with Autism. In the beginning, he had to be taught how to drag the letters but he was encouraged by having the word spelled, spoken, and the item doing something. I used the free version for that and once he had the hang of it, he would request to play. Now he can do it on his own so we have the full version. He has learned new words from using this app. Definitely worth it!.Version: 5.4

A good oneI thought it is a boring game and wasted money, but my girls enjoy it and it does make them love spelling game..Version: 0

Thank you!Love this app for my little one. Great app! Much appreciated..Version: 0

Best spelling app for toddlersMy 2 year old likes it... So will yours..Version: 0

Autist son can now SPELL!My 5 and a half year old autistic and intellectually disabled son, who wasn't even remotely interested in learning the alphabet, now knows and recognises the entire alphabet in random order, spells dozens and dozens of the words in this app and types his own name. We've only had is about 8 weeks! We are praying there are more extensions for this app. We love it!.Version: 2.0.2

Responsive and Fun with lots of OptionsGreat app with logical parental controls and many options. With or w/o hints, short, long or random length words, force left to right or random. My son has "graduated" through the different options and chooses this app over others. It's easy to understand what to do, good feedback for errors, quick response when touching and dragging the letters. Also offers categories for what words you spell, i.e. home, colors, animals, etc. Or choose all words and get random mix. Nice options to keep the game fresh or growing with the child. It's really worth it to get the Deluxe version. App works the same on iPad and iPhone and my son doesn't care which device he's on as long as he can play. The biggest thing is he is spelling these words outside of the app now and isn't that the point? Win..Version: 5.6

Keeps my 4 year old entertainedGood mix of words.Version: 2.0.2

Amazing ApplicationOur 4 year son that has Autism LOVES this application. He now can recognize and spell every word in this application and more. So glad we purchased this application. Highly recommend it!.Version: 0

Words can't describe! My autistic son of 5 yrs showed no sign of wanting to participate with app initially, let alone be able to put the letters into the words. His fine motor skills were not seemingly capable. After a matter of a few weeks he is now able to get the words completed in a flash and no one, including our therapists thought he had it in him. Thank you for helping my son prove everybody wrong!!.Version: 2.0.2

WONDERFUL APPThere is something about this app that my students (with special needs) just love! My students have speech and language delay so I can use this app to target vocabulary, phonetics and articulation. I'm so glad this app has so many functions. I also use it as a reward for two of my who request it every speech session. Great App!.Version: 2.0.2

Awsome App! Great for AUTISM!GREAT APP! The best feature of this app is that there is no reward for wrong answers/no wrong answers. No annoying wrong sounds that the kids will press over and over. This app can be played independently by preschoolers is very easy to learn and great for all abilities/disabilities. My son is 4 years old, non-verbal autistic. He loves this app & THANKS TO THIS APP HE HAS EARLY LITERACY SKILLS! He has a new interest in learning letters, words & reading. THANKS!!!.Version: 2.0.2

He looooves this app! This is my son's favorite app and he plays it multiple times per day. He was having trouble with spelling and within 2 weeks it became a strength! All we need is more words- we have them all and he is getting bored! One thing that could make the app better is the ability to create your own words, including a picture, and put into one of the existing categories. Another is an option for all of the words to be available at the same time with some using phonics sounds, and the others that cannot use phonics would use letter names. Thanks for a great learning tool!.Version: 5.5

Love it!I got this app to help teach my son his lowercase letters (already knew uppercase) in a fun way. I love how customizable the app is! In a short time my son has learned many of these words..Version: 7.0

Good learning toolI love how it pronounces the letter when my son presses on the it to put in place, once they are all in place it sounds it out again, pronounces the word, and a picture appears above the spelled word to reiterate what my son just spelled. Marvelous! He is four years old and the letters and words are making more and more sense to him. He thinks it is fun and I think it's awesome to let him play a "video game" that is educational!.Version: 0

Great appGo ahead and buy with confidence. My two year old loves it. It's a great vocabulary builder. It teaches letter and word recognition. The letter drag function is super smooth. Also the way it helps the child drag the right letter to the correct tile is genius. Fantastic..Version: 5.2

Wonderful app :)This app is fun, educational, and very easy to use. This app can grow with your child when options are used to adjust to your childs needs. My children find this app fun and enjoyable. As the parent I love that my children are learning not only vocabulary words but also beginning spelling..Version: 5.3

Great App!Very customizable app to teach children a great deal of vocabulary and learn to spell. There are so many options, each member of the family can have their own unique experience. You can even buy an add on of a different language. I highly recommend it..Version: 5.3

LoveWe have owned this app a year now. It was one of the first apps we purchased when we got my son an iPad. He has autism and a genetic syndrome. We didn't think he knew very much but found out he was very intelligent. He can read and spell and say words!.Version: 5.2

FwdeluxeBest app for kids and letters.Version: 5.5

If using your IPod they might as well learn something, right?Preschool app that teachs letters and spelling. Emphasizes each letter, the letters in combination and the whole word - followed by an animation. Voices are adults and not irritating. Appropriate for 2 year olds. No evidence yet that my son has actually learned any letters or spelling, but given the amount of time he spends playing this app I hope he's learning something!.Version: 0

Good phonics based appMy 2 1/2 yr liked the free download. So I decided to get the "deluxe" version. What I discovered when using the deluxe version is you can control a number of features. Most importantly you can instruct the app to only sound out the letters vs. saying them. One minor issue is that the spaces where the letters are dragged to are hard to see when the back ground color is dark..Version: 4.0

My 16 month old daughter loves this app!She started with playing the free version on our iPhone right after she turned one. Got her an iPad so she can play with this app without having to borrow our iPhones. Now at 16 months, she can complete 8 letter words! I think she's starting to recognize letters because of this app! I recommend this to anyone who have kids in preschool!.Version: 0

My kids love this app!!! (UPDATE)UPDATE: the display issue on iPhone 4s / iOS 5.0.1 is still an issue but a WORKAROUND has been found. If your phone does not display correctly, try rotating the phone 180 degrees to make the screen flip. Then it will display correctly! (you can rotate back and it will be correct as well) ============================= My kids love this app, it is fun to watch them spell words and practice their letters! Unfortunately the most recent update has caused it to display incorrectly on the iPhone 4s running iOS 5.0 :( On the iPhone 5 with ios 6 it works great. As soon as the developers fix the issue I will change to 5 stars. Thanks for the great app, hope it is fixed soon..Version: 5.4

Great at teaching my 18mth old hand eye coordination..Version: 5.5

Simple but (therefore) attention-grabbing4 thumbs UP! (2 from me, 2 from the kid) Our 3.5-year-old will easily sit half an hour playing this game (he would keep going if I'd let him). I like its simplicity without extra fluff. All the setup options are very intuitive and straight forward too. Our son kept picking letters out of order, and it was bugging the OCD in me. So I went to settings, and there it was, the "left to right" option. Tada! We've only played the shapes category so far, but I like the variety that goes beyond the regular, way too common geometric shapes. Having the Japanese option was actually the determining factor for us, and I would think any parents who are raising their children in one of the optional languages would really appreciate the multi-lingual function. We had the free version for a long time but now that our son is really picking up on letters and sounds, we decided to get the full version even though I knew the app was old with no updates of late. But lo and behold, I was pleased to see that it was just updated a month ago! Yay! The animation and the drawings are very basic, which can be improved, I suppose. I do however like the bold (again, simple in a good way) colors..Version: 6.0

Great for my daughterI bought this app after using a few of the other learning touch apps with my 3 year old daughter. She really enjoys them. The apps are easy for her to use and I love to hear her repeat letter sounds and words she hears in the app (which is something I can't always get her to do for me). I purchased this app to give her access to more words and there are lots of them included. I like that I can select letters or phonics sounds and also choose a category of words or all words. This app is a great way to encourage her to learn and say new words. It is also a nice way to introduce letters and phonics. Money well spent!.Version: 5.3

Wow. Well done with new update for iPadWas bummed when I bought this and realized it was iphone pixelated on my iPad but with the update tonight this thing is SHARP! Truth is, my son already loved it. Now he'll just love it more. This flat out teaches my kid to learn letters and words. He's 2 hrs 3 mtgs and can turn on my iPad and navigate to this game/app. Well done!.Version: 0

SpellingI just love this app. My daughter goes back to this app time and time again. We also have Bob Books which are equally as good..Version: 5.2

Awesome for our 2 year old!Having downloaded this a few minutes ago, I can't get my iphone back from our little girl. She loves it and we'll love the fact she's learning all the time! Thanks, so simple but so good for her development..Version: 0

Great appAll 3 of my boys use this app. My oldest could read before kindergarten from playing with is app and with others from the app store. My 2 year old picked it up and started using it on his own just two weeks ago. We all love this app. I'm using it now with my middle boy. He's begging to play as I'm writing the review. Thanks developers for the time and hard work..Version: 5.3

Best app for 19 month old! This is an unbelievable application. My 19 month old son just can't put it down and loves the sounds after spelling a word. The interface is easy enough for him to just pick it up and start playing. Six stars!.Version: 0

AwesomeGreat app overall.Version: 5.1

Autistic Daughter Loves This App!!!My daughter is three and autistic and she loves this application. It a fabulous spelling app. There weren't quite enough words for her (she got bored) in the free version so I upgraded almost immediately to the deluxe version because she liked it so well. After only a few times using it, she can now breeze through with ease as she moves the letters to their corresponding place in the word. I also like that the app immediately says the letter when the child touches it instead of waiting until it's been placed. After all the letters have been placed, it reads the letters aloud and says the word. My daughter loves it because it's easy for her to control and she's begun learning her letters with ease..Version: 4.0

LoveLove it.Version: 0
