Art Authority for iPad for Negative User Reviews

When it works - brilliantUnfortunately, since the last update there are some really annoying problem. - it won't load pictures in the background - I'd there are a lot of paintings to download, I can leave it for a few hours. When I get back, all the images are there. However, if I try to see them, they disappear. As if they have never been loaded..Version: 4.10.3

Not worth the moneyThis app basically takes you to Wikipedia. There is nothing that cannot be found on the Internet by searching an artist..Version: 4.7.2

Wikipedia ArticlesIt's a database of images with links to Wikipedia and other Internet sites. If you search art history online resources, you'll get better, free sites to look through..Version: 4.6.2

Disapointing at times and sluggish. It's an expensive app to start with. Pics probably look nice on small iPhone 3G/3GS screen, but large bright iPad screen needs so much more. The resolution of some of particularly the contemporary art, is unforgivably low for the price paid and one would be better off just doing a Google search for a better version of the photograph. For the price, the low res pics make it a poor quite frankly..Version: 0

Not goodNot as bad as some people make out, but neither is it any good. Weird controls and slow load times. The content is ok, but there are far better apps out there.Version: 4.6.2

So much potential, but falls far shortFantastic idea, hugely impressive collection of art, yet the thumbnails load so painfully slowly it makes the whole experience a waste of your time. I'll return to the app if they address this issue in an update, otherwise it will remain unused on my ipad. For this much money I expect a better executed application and at the moment I feel ripped off....Version: 0

Ummm...photography?It is not controversial to refer to Henri Cartier-Bresson as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. But because he's a photographer, he doesn't get mentioned? As far as I could tell, there isn't a single photographer represented here, which is extraordinarily disappointing. I can only assume it'll be updated with a photo section soon. Otherwise, why not just rename it the painting and sculpture authority? Otherwise, the app isn't bad and can be quite useful as a reference, despite some lo-res images. It'd be nice to be able to bookmark specific artists and pieces, and perhaps even create your own slideshow based upon those bookmarks..Version: 0

Soso collection, poor image qualityFor any museum goers, getting this app may look like a no brainer, but be aware that it differs little from the browsing experience since there is little info on either the artists or the styles, and some of the image qualities are extremely poor, even without the zoom..Version: 0

CrashWould have been brilliant, but crashed within 3 minutes to a black screen with nothing to press. Such a shame. A no buy ....Version: 4.7

Disappointing...I was hoping to love this app. Unfortunately, there are many problems. For starters, the quality of the scans is often poor (and highly variable). Many look great. Some look grainy without zooming. The Norman Rockwells are awful. The one's where Art Authority uses other website's scans are the worst culprets, but there are some clunkers by this app as well. The volume of pieces is quite variable. Van Gogh brings up over 600 images. Monet brings up 50. I would have expected a few hundred. Also (being Canadian), I was eager to look up the works of the Group of Seven. Most only have a few works in the catalog (poor quality as well) the rest are not even present. Other things that would be nice is setting images aside as "Favorites". Also, the same artists are present under multiple folders. That's fine. But, when you look (download and save) 600+ Van Goghs, all the Van Gogh folders should be marked as viewed (the content is the same). So if you click on a different Van Gogh folder the files don't have to re-download (also, listing him as Van Gogh, Vincent and Gogh, Vincent Van? Really?) Needs a lot of work. Some artists need more material, others need the material rescanned. It would look great on a tiny little iphone, but not the ipad. Not worth $10....Version: 0

Update neededNeeds an update for the ipad2 to make it faster and clean up the graphics..Version: 4.2

Low res!..Version: 4.11.6

Very disappointingGiven that this is just a fancy doorway to Wikipedia and to commercial art data sites like Artnet, it is incredibly disappointing and not worth the price. It is baffling and chaotic to navigate, switching you away from the app to the net without you realising. It's an elaborate rip-off. AVOID!.Version: 4.4

Take it or leave itI picked this up thinking it would be high resolution images that would show brush strokes. They’re not. I was going to use it for painting studies. Good for overall reference and basic info, but not much more. 2/5.Version: 4.11

Lazy imagesI pondered a while if this would be worth £6 so I bought it anyway. It's nice to have a collection for reference but the images are pretty poor, pretty very poor. I have yet to find one which fills the iPad screen without looking pixelated, and forget zooming in, these pics look as if they were designed for iPhone. I think some lazy students just took the pics off google images and made them as small as possible, I was looking forward to zooming into the detail on the paintings but alas no. App is okay for reference but you will get better pics on the net...Version: 4.2

References from Wikipedia?...Ok this is supposed to be an educational virtual museum and all "details" they provide for paintings are from the not-so-trusty source of good old Wikipedia. I was expecting at least an expertly written and verified sentence or two explaining context and giving insight into the paintings. Worse some paintings ( I'm assuming those too obscure for a wiki reference?) don't even have any info at all. This is slightly useful in that it organizes art into user friendly categories and has introduced me to new paintings, but when I go to a museum (and spend $5) I expect to actually gain some deeper insight into the works. Especially since aside from say modern art, it is extremely common for cultural and historical context to come into play. It is super unfortunate because this app has huge potential, just sad to see they took short cuts and the easy way out instead of creating something truly extraordinary..Version: 4.5

Disappointed.Considering this app means to present many number of masterpieces, the app's design is even more disappointing. Interface is slow and very inconvenient. It is nearly frustrating. It does not have any information for each art work on its own, and only source it has is Wikipedia link. Well, I didn't pay ten bucks just to look at Wikipedia locked inside the horrible interface. At least I wish developer could improve the interface more lucrative. Since I can look most of pictures here with safari only, I don't even know why I bought this app. Once again, make it more convenient at least please..Version: 0

RubbishDo not buy - this is a terrible app and a complete lie when it says ‘ultra high res zoom’. You can get better images online for free. When I zoom into an image, everything is blurred. Very disappointed..Version: 4.6.2

Avoid. Waste of money.Wish I'd followed the advice of others below. Pics and info take SO long to load individually that I have yet to access any information or see any pictures. I have the newest iPad too so there's no excuse. So basically its unusable. What total nonsense. Don't make my mistake. Avoid..Version: 4.6.2

Good buyI have found most captions mention artist and work name and all link to wikipedia for info RE the artist. Higher than screen resolution images would also be nice to warrant zooming in on detail. I give 3 stars after a decent evaluation, hopefully content continues to be further developed and refined. Volume of images is great. Happy with my purchase and a great companion to literary sources..Version: 0

DisappointingI was delighted when I first downloaded this app but now it doesn't work properly. I waited over half an hour for paintings be Titian to download but next time I turned on, they had disappeared..Version: 4.8.1

Content and image quality frankly disappointingThe content is, perhaps inevitably, restrictive. However, the worst element by far is that the image quality is terribly disappointing. The library has some wonderful works, that look as if they have been photographed with an old Box Brownie. Certainly no attempt to use the quality of the IPad screen, or modern digital imaging techniques..Version: 4.6

Terrible image qualityThe image quality is shocking. Everything looks hideous, and nothing like the originals. And the faux frames they display are awful. Childish app that is a disgrace to have been charged for..Version: 4.5

AmateurThe interface is quite sluggish and prone issues especially when changing orientations. The mechanics seem just a little too basic and rough around the edges given the price this app demands. Tapping around the screen to open information on certain elements just opens a small window that presents a Wikipedia search on the topic you selected. Feels very amateur. The artworks come with relatively poor textual information. Overall, very disappointing..Version: 4.6

OkayI expected a lot more than what I got. Nice images if your favorite artist is included in the app. Most artists that I was searching for were missing. Not really much at all for modern and contemporary print makers..Version: 4.11

OK, but...This app has serious potential, but it has a ways to go yet. I am a sculptor and a college prof. My hope was to use this app in the classroom to reference the work of notable sculptors and their sculptures throughout the history of art. While I can find some of their names in your directory, the selection of images per sculptor is very limited, the images are not representative of their notable pieces and the image quality is frequently very poor. As sculpture was the first art form, I would like to see the folks who designed this app try to greatly increase the database of Sculptors and their notable works! Lastly, the organization for sculpture in the rooms is poor. You have a separate room for sculpture; but again, it is grossly incomplete. Missing sculptors from that room show up in the specific genre/period/style rooms making the research of specific artists confusing at best. I want this to be a great and useful app! Please consider the above. I hope to see a more robust sculpture database here soon!.Version: 4.4

Poor quality imagesIt’s great to see this collection of art, but the image quality is very very poor. It’s like they’ve been duplicated and compressed a few dozen times on Facebook before being put in the app. I look forward to that improving..Version: 4.11

Good app; incompetent supportI really like the concept. Unfortunately, the presentation of material leaves a lot to be desired. First of all, the app is not universal: in order to have it on the iPhone and iPad, you'll have to pay twice, and not a small amount. Greedy, just like many developers here, not willing to create a universal app. I did purchase both nonetheless. Imagine my surprise when I found out that both apps will be installed on iPad: the one for iPad and the one for iPhone! Removing the iPhone version does not help: upon next sync it will be added again. So I contacted tech support. After many days of waiting, they finally informed me that the issue had something to do with digital identifier for each of the versions and that was it. No plans to correct anything, no apology, just deal with it. There was an update to the program since then and indeed, nothing has changed. I still have two versions on my iPad and my manually delete one of them after each sync. Finally, there is a problem with offline use, such as in an airplane. Absolutely nothing is available without internet connection, not even a preview of collection or thumbnails for paintings. While putting all of the advertised 10 GB of data into an app would be obscene, making a portion of collection available for offline use would be a welcome change..Version: 0

DisappointingIt's not an authority on art, it's just a link to Wikipedia. I thought it would at least have some educational tour like functions, but it just lists artists and lets you choose from them, and gives you info from Wikipedia! And if you're looking for a specific piece you could be waiting for the list to load all day. So slow. It's not even that attractive!.Version: 4.6.2

Low resReal disappointed.Version: 4.11.4

Decent, but could be betterThere are surprisingly few art-viewing apps for the iPad. This is the best I've found, but I keep wishing it were better. The navigation is pretty clumsy and slow. For example, to search through an artist's works for a particular title, you have to wait for all of them to load, which can take a long time. The alternative is to navigate all the way back to the home screen, then search by title (which is faster for some reason, but then you'll be searching through all artists). I also wish the scans were higher-resolution. On the positive side, the number of images is pretty huge, and there are "detail" views of some works, which partially makes up for the low resolution. Overall, I'm finding this a useful reference, but hope they continue to improve it..Version: 4.6.2

Terrible qualityPoor pixelated images.Version: 4.2

Well-organized but could be improved...What I appreciate about this program is that it organizes the artists by period or by artist, and you really get a sense of the similar works being done at the time around the world from other accomplished masters. In that sense, the program presents an experience you will never get at any museum. What I think can be improved upon is access to more information about the painting and the artist. When I click the weblink of the painting within a gallery, it brings me to the wikipedia page of the movement itself rather than the painting or the artist. I have to manually do the search on my own outside the program if I want to know more. I would also appreciate higher resolution files of the paintings. I understand you have to keep it low for the smoothness of the experience, but please give users an option to view a higher res version if a particular painting intrigues them..Version: 0

First impression......For me, I class this as an expensive app. However I am still happy that I purchased it as it is good and has a lot more potential in store. I would say that the graphics should be improved a bit to enhance this experience on the iPad. I would also like it if a little critique caption could accompany the pictures. I can't really complain about the speed TBH. Oh, and where is L.S. Lowery? Please add him. I would like to come back and review this app again in a few months or so. I feel that if it could be tuned in here and there, it would fully deserve more stars and justify the price tag..Version: 0

WAY TOO SLOW!This app is a great idea, to be able to browse great works of art on your iPad and in the comfort of your home... but it is PAINFULLY SLOW, making it a pain to look up anything at all... I really regret buying this app! PLEASE FIX THIS MAJOR ISSUE!.Version: 4.1

OK, not greatThis app isn’t worth the $10 they want for it. It’s OK, but not great. It’s not organized very well and the image quality should be better. And, for all the pieces in here, most are from white men which makes it feel a little monolithic. For this amount of money, it should be better..Version: 4.11.1

CrashesI agree with that other fella -- new version is very very crashy. Doesn't work. Pleas fix. Love, Charles.Version: 4.8

Cache errorsGreat app, but offline viewing is problematic. For example, dled all of Manet's paintings to view but upon exiting then entering the app 1. All paintings have to be downloaded again (not cached) or 2. Turned off wifi for offline viewing test n only caches approx 1/10 of the paintings I've browsed through already..Version: 0

Ok but could be betterQuite a lot of my favourite artists aren't represented. Load times are slow and images aren't brilliant quality. On the other hand there are a lot of good things about the app and it does have quite a lot of artists. I find some parts of the interface hard to master or understand and it would be good if there were searches for types or schools of art..Version: 4.7

Not so goodSome links like timeline, individual artists etc.... Leave a black screen, doesn't appear to be trying to link to anything (no activity icon seen) ! Some good information available but having to shut down(power off) is frustrating when links don't respond. Disappointing!.Version: 4.2

Disappointed for the priceNot a cheap app, but I thought if there was a topic that is ideally suited to have an app on the new iPad, it would be the world of art. I imagined viewing the paintings in the high resolution and marveling at the beauty of the art. All that expectation was quickly doused when I viewed my first pieces of artwork in the app. There is nothing "high-res" about the art as the app claims. They look pretty good when viewed hanging on the virtual "wall", but when you try to view them full screen on the iPad, they are blurry and pixilated. Huge disappointment. This app had so much promise. Furthermore, the app doesn't offer any unique or new insights. All of the information on a period, artist, or era only comes from a pop-up Wikipedia page. As a side note, yes, using this app requires an Internet connection or you don't even get the pictures. Overall, this app is a huge disappointment and not worth the money. Probably valued around $2 (tops). The content from Wikipedia is not really a concern as it is a good source so use it, but the quality of the images is a failure for this type of app (and the promises made in the description). If the images ever do become high quality versions, the app's value would be greater, but you can't take their word for it because they already claim to offer high res images of the artwork..Version: 4.6

4.7 upgradeHi, Too bad we cannot save anymore to our photos. We should still be able to do it, at least for art of public domain. Very disappointing commercial choice from a great app. I liked to show masterpieces to my friend from my photos, offline... Now, over. Please, fix..Version: 4.7

Artless AuthorityThese collections appeal to the upper areas of appreciation by our Brains.Version: 4.11

A bit disappointing, but there is still nothing like it around thereFor what it is, I think it’s overpriced. You might as well just get the list of artists and Google them. Under certain WiFi connections, it cannot download the paintings from the internet, even if it’s still able to connect to Wikipedia. Quality of the images also varies, from ok (it does not claim to be HD) to not very good (their website explains the issue with contemporary artists). Depending of the connection, it can also crash quite often. What I do is, after loading a few paintings, I quit the app and enter it again, so at least it keeps those paintings in the cache (when it crashes, it loses all the paintings that I have seen in that session). But, since there does not seem to be any other apps that aim to do what this one claims to do, you don’t have much choice..Version: 0

Art authorityDon't waste your money. It does not work. I have had it for less than ten minutes and the screen is frozen on navigation and searching and will not go back to the home screen. Further it has to reload the images every session. Tiresome waste of money.Version: 4.7.2

Good interface, disappointing approachFor the money this app charges, I really expected much more scholarly effort put into the information. I almost took a double take when I saw that all the info was just a link to Wikipedia. It makes me wonder about how they get their images. Are those just open source as well? Many of the images are horribly low-res. For something that calls itself "Art Authority" and charges as much as this app does, I really expected much more groundwork. As it is, the app just feels like a pretty polished Wikipedia portal. That being said, it does present the works to you well and provides those Wikipedia links conveniently. The app is sometime inconveniently slow, but the overall presentation is well done. Don't expect the museum experience, but if you are looking to expose yourself to many important artists and works of art, this app is very good for that. However, I recommend buying it on sale..Version: 4.6.2

Art AuthoritativeI have used this app since inception and have seen it evolve over that period it brings an easy and comprehensive view of masterpieces from the Renaissance to Banksy! It organises this in a easy to search manner by era by Directory and highlights major works within each art period. It is how art should be appreciated my only issue is that it crashes often on IOS when navigating from grid view to wall view. Highly recommended.Version: 4.10.1

TerribleThe app does not work, the works don’t download. Tried deleting, reinstalling, and nothing. Waste of time!.Version: 4.11.1

Nice but could be great..I've had this app since it was released for the iPad and although it provides a great deal of content, I've been waiting for years for the images to become hi res (as was originally promised). Various iPad models have come and gone but the resolution has never been improved so images look blurry full screen and the resolution doesn't come anywhere near taking advantage of my iPad Air. It's a good app but it could be amazing. All you need to do is increase the resolution of the images!.Version: 4.9.1

Poor picture quality on iPad third genNo idea why they say they upped the image quality for the new retina display. The images are highly compressed and it shows. Other than that, it's a decent app. I like the way it's organized. The interface is perfectly functional, but clunky. I think it would have been a lot more successful if they let go of the gallery metaphor and took cues from apps that have better interfaces. Also wish you could click on the time period to get the Wikipedia article about it. Seems like a no brainer. 10bucks for an app that simply consolidates content from art net and Wikipedia is way too expensive. I like the content and having it organized this way is nice, but not sure I would buy it again..Version: 4.6

UI sluggish, often unresponsive; desperately needs updatingThis is basically a really bad viewer for art that is stored in a cloud somewhere, but not on your iPad. Even on wi-fi, it just hangs and hangs and hangs. For $10, I expect the art to be on my iPad. Check out Van Gogh HD and notice the difference. This is probably the most frustrating example of over-promising and under-delivering I've seen. And tapping info is a joke. It takes you to a general wikipedia article. Even works that have their own wikipedia articles don't link to them; just to a general article. It's lazy programming, and it's not on the flipping iPad! If they just wanted something to view art on the internet, fine. Price it at 99 cents, not $10 bucks. It's just a ripoff. I want it to be awesome, but it continually disappoints..Version: 4.1
