NYer Print Edition for Positive User Reviews

Missing simple reading featuresWhilst the app works well it's missing the ability to get back to the where you left at in an article. So, if you unwittingly swipe to the next page (which is a bit too easy) and swipe back, you're back to the beginning of what you were reading..Version: 5.0

Love itI love reading The New Yorker on my iPad. It feels like I am reading and holding the magazine in my own hands. Thanks!.Version: 5.2

No probsAfter finally allowing myself the luxury of subscribing to The New Yorker (retirement does have its upsides!), I am enjoying it immensely. As for the cartoons, I'm having no trouble at all moving into and out of the Gallery..Version: 4.2.5

Update InoperableUPDATE: Able to download and open the latest issue at long last, thanks to needed app updates (?), but disappointed in what appears largely unnecessary format changes. Still and all, I will keep using it to gain access prior to mail delivery. Finally got latest issue downloaded after multiple crashes on iPad. When download crashed as well when attempting to open issue, reinstalled app only now to be unable to download current issue altogether! Earlier version worked fine for me; no need to update whatsoever. Guess I will now just have to await delivery of hard copy on Friday....Version: 5.0

Some of the best writing and writers with a few dudsI’ve fallen behind in reading the New Yorker which means I’m less informed. Most of the articles are wonderful but you can’t be brilliant all of the time. I know most of the perspective of the magazine so no surprises there but no real surprises as the writers stay in their lane. At the end of every issue there is always something that I want to stay with me so that makes it worth while. If only there weren’t so many things going on in the world as well as my ADD my life would be changed by some of the writing..Version: 5.3

Nothing like itThe New Yorker is, unequivocally, the best magazine money can buy. Its quality of writing and aesthetic appeal is unbeatable. Bear in mind, though, this is slightly different than a normal news app, where one scrolls through a list of stories. Here, you download an issue of the magazine, then can navigate though the 10-12 stories per issue there. If you are looking for a more traditional news app experience (very similar design to the apps by the New York Times and The Atlantic), use the New Yorker Today app; it has most of the stories from the week’s magazine, as well as new articles that come out throughout the week. All things considered, The New Yorker is definitely worth the cost of subscription..Version: 5.0

The New Yorker is pretty excellent to be honest.Top quality articles, genuinely funny cartoons, well rounded cultural insights and awesome art to match. So many interesting topics and interesting people. The New Yorker is pretty excellent to be honest..Version: 5.1

Great appI have just renewed my sub for 2017. Most weeks I find an article that enriches my life. Coupled to a sub to the New Yorker Radio hour podcast rounds out the whole experience. One of the bonuses is being able to review the upcoming music gigs (which are hard to attend from Australia) and then find music by the artists on Apple Music. Best money I spend each year. I have had no issues with the app in the 2 years I have subscribed..Version: 4.6.9

Good reading experienceEnjoying it.Version: 4.6.9

Good but could be more "ipad"..I am reading the special golf edition using the app (great edition by the way). Overall The app is good and is probably as close to reading the paper version as it can be. Could add a few useful features, like a clock so you don't have to exit the app to check time. Or a page count to see were you are in the article would be helpful too..Version: 3.7

Quality ReadingWorth the effort to read. Often it inspires to think differently..Version: 5.2

FantasticA fantastic app, easy to use, simple but beautiful design that's perfectly adjusted for the iPad and not just a PDF scan like other magazines. A true pleasure to read, kudos!.Version: 0

Fantastic mag, App frustrating at timesI love getting the magazine on my iPad as I'm not in the US but can never get the cartoon gallery to work, just keeps bumping me out. Otherwise though it's great; esp remembering where I was reading when closed..Version: 4.2.5

App freezesNew app freezes when scrolling through articles, even those already downloaded, on my new IPad. And when it does let you read an actual article, most of times it’s reset back to the beginning of it. Somehow this version of the app manages to be worst than the one before, it’s quite a feat, since all we ask is to scroll text..Version: 5.0

The Weekly issueI’ve been reading the New Yorker magazine for sixty years. Its fresh crisp prose, its humour, the variety of its coverage across the political spectrum, the arts etc together with its range of contributors , domestic and international, still after all these years makes me excited as it drops through my letterbox every week. It never disappoints..Version: 5.3

Always!I have been receiving this magazine since i was 14 years old. I am now 74. Do the math! Through thick and thin it has been constant enlightment, laughs subtle and raucous, education and info. NEVER has an issue arrived and gone unread in one form or another. I had wallpapered a study with covers including 15 of Eustace. There would have been more but i wanted more variety. I want to be Remnick in my next life! Although i now live in Brasil, i am a NY’er until my last neurotic breath!.Version: 5.0

The New Yorker gets digitalI have relished it’s transformation over the past decade or so. Keeping the best of its legacy uniqueness but experimenting with digital transformation that have created a new whole that’s greater than the sum of its parts. Most newspapers and magazines are dying because they failed to find a rebirth. New Yorker thrives and we are all better for it. Keep experimenting. Curious George.Version: 5.3

Outrageous pricingIt’s a money grab by Conde Nast. Too bad because after 50 tears of reading the print edition, I’d expect the break other mags give..Version: 4.7.4

Not ripped offPeople fail to relise that in Australia the average wage is less than in the sates. So the cost of living here is higher. This would be the reason for the higher cost.Version: 3.0

A well polished appThey have done a really good job on this app. The issues are 3 pounds each which may seem a bit step, but it is matching, if not better than the print version. It would, however, be nice to be able to adjust the background colours on the articles, as it can be quite tiring after a while with the white..Version: 0

New app (July, 2019)Dear NY’r, Please bring back the old app; the new version is very unfriendly, slow and does not fit properly into an iPad screen. Please.... Regards, Keshav Das Canada..Version: 5.0

The New Yorker ArticlesAlways pithy, thorough well researched, and perceptive..Version: 5.0

Perfect price (if you don't already have a subscription)For £3.49 you get four issues of top-notch journalism. The price is perfect, and nothing to complain about. Throw in access to the online archives going back to 1925, and the deal only gets better. However, if you are already a print subscriber based outside the US/Canada, you will not get free access to the iPad version just yet; however, Conde Nasté have said that this feature will become available some time in the future. However, if, like me, you were not previously a subscriber, then go download this now; it's the best journalism around at an unbeatable price!.Version: 3.0

Excellent app for an excellent magazineIt looks great on the iPad — feels like reading the paper copy. Each issue is large, but can easily be archived to iCloud to save storage space, then downloaded again any time. Annual subscription is a bargain compared to the single issue cost. And the content, of course, is excellent..Version: 4.6

HorribleThe performance of the new app is terrible. It stalls, jitters, and often does nothing. It scrolls to the next article when I am trying to scroll down, or does nothing when I am trying to scroll. It also reloads issues I have already downloaded. I read on the subway, so this may be due to not having a WiFi connection, but the whole reason I read The New Yorker on my phone is so I can read it on the subway. If the app doesn’t work on the subway, I will cancel my subscription, as I am not going to carry stacks of issues around with me..Version: 5.0

The New YorkerYou have to get over the guilt trip of not reading every article.........just give yourself credit for reading a whole book when you do finish one of three, and hve the issue around for when you do have time.......definitely one of the finest and most enjoyable resources in print and with the audible spin-offs: New Yorker fiction in which one author reads another authors story from the archive and they discuss.......or the political scene, or New Yorker poetry.......all gifts “may they live long and prosper....Version: 5.3

5.0 App UpdateA huge step backwards. For one thing, it keeps blowing up when I try to download the current issue (July 22, 2019) on my iPad — not to mention wiping out my previously downloaded issues. (Strangely enough, I am able to download back issues, well, the 2 I tried anyway). Even so, it no longer keeps track of where I left off reading if I happen to accidentally swipe elsewhere or temporarily stop reading and close the article. Anyway, I agree with the (somewhat snide) comments about letting the “kids” responsible for the tekkie stuff run around unsupervised. Mom and dad, since THEY still read, need to approve all changes before being implemented. 😒.Version: 5.0

Love the magazine but . . .The New Yorker has been part of my household for decades. I loved the previous on-line format but hate this one. It does not honor the print version, the cartoon contest is hard to navigate and often screwed up, the format of the cartoon section is annoying as are the little animated banners in the sections that list events. When you swipe out of an article and come back, you always end up starting over at the top. I hate all of it. I can’t imagine what possessed you to change the format. There’s an old saying about things that ain’t broke..Version: 5.1

Latest updateInitially there were quite a few hiccups- simply downloading the issue was a pain - but app fixed now- it is a real pleasure and dramatic improvements.Version: 5.0

Really handyI really enjoy this way of reading the New Yorker. Not only do I find it easier but it's also a lot earlier (I live in Australia so it arrives well before the printed version). The added content is improving all the time and it's great to be able to alert others to good articles. It's easy to read and convenient. Some suggested improvements You can only keep so many editions on your iPad at a time so it would be handy to be able to distinguish in the store between "purchased and read" and just "purchased" issues. Similarly, in the index of the magazine, it would be good to be able to mark stories as "read". Due to the size of each issue it takes a while to download so it would be able to do so in background. Whenever I've tried to read an issue during downloading, it pauses. If you go to another app you have to start over again. Sometimes this happens even when you read another issue..Version: 3.7.1

New Yorker appLove the quick downloadIng and archive capabilities. The presentation re-creates and in some ways enhances the printed version experience. However, I find frustrating that the newer app doesn’t bookmark and return me to where I left off on an article. If I accidentally swipe to the next or previous article, I am automatically sent to the start of the article I was reading when I return to it within seconds..Version: 5.2

Great magazine, crummy appThe magazine content is excellent. However accessing this content is excruciating as the download speed is very, very, very slow. To make matters worse, downloads often stop during the downloading process causing you to have to start again. Trying to get back material that you've already downloaded and payed for, is nigh on impossible. As stated great magazine, terrible technology..Version: 3.7

The New Yorker is Awesome!(That's all I need to say. Thanks).Version: 5.2

Why I love the New YorkerI ave subscribed to this wonderful magazine for many years. I enjoy the covers, especially Barry Blitt. I appreciated Peter S’s reviews on art; he taught me how to look at and understand all kinds of art. He wrote a poignant essay about the illness which will cause his demise. I will miss him. I enjoy Anthony’s movie reviews. And Jill Lepore. This magazine has been a mainstay in my life; I look forward to it every week. When they pile up and I have to toss them, it feels like I’m throwing out something very precious to me. I love to write and periodically send out my blog “Endgame” to friends and relatives. Right now, I’m focused on the Lockdown. Finally, I love the cartoons. In my opinion, it’s a perfect magazine..Version: 5.3

GreatProbably the best example of a magazine on the iPad so far. I really hope we see subscription pricing soon though, because 6 bucks a week is going to be a little much..Version: 0

This app is greatI love this app. It's a great way to read the latest and its quick to download new mags from them too. They show it like an actual magazine so you don't miss anything out from it. I say that you get it now!!.Version: 4.2.5

PoorThis new app is not downloading properly..Version: 5.0

Seems to have gotten betterI read some of the earlier reviews and it looks like there used to be a lot of problems with the app’s performance. I’ve been using the app for two weeks now and it runs perfectly fine. I assume they may have fixed some of the issues..Version: 4.8

CartoonsThe display of the cartoons is ill-conceived. The section needs to be more thoughtfully designed..Version: 5.1

They can’t figure out online publishing.Have been a devoted reader if The New Yorker for over 50 years. Loved the old, traditional print format. This translated well to online media in the first few years of the internet but now is a mess. Large unmanageable fonts in the articles, less attractive titles, and complete confusion in the cartoon department. One issue (viewed on an iPad) showed all cartoons with missing captions. Another (last week) showed all the captions twice. The caption contest is even messier, sometimes with dozens of not-so-funny choices to vote on, sometimes less. The original format of cartoons a few years ago worked well—why change it? The writing remains first-rate. But please: get a new IT department! Figure out how to make the magazine work on multiple platforms (all the cheaper magazines have done it). And fix the cartoons. The content remains good, but the presentation is poor. Walter James Atlanta.Version: 5.1

Top quality, but really slanted viewpoint last two yearsI am a conservative ...and I yes I enjoy the NY. I like reading other viewpoints. And The writing is top notch. It’s a great read cover to cover . My only criticism is in the past two years it’s gone from “left viewpoint” - which is great - to “left screeching and whining” - which is not- towards the current president or current Congress . One is the devil and one is a hall of goodness to read the magazine, so the political articles and tidbits have no objectivity at all and it comes across as sour grapes rather than a sophisticated magazine..Version: 5.2

Love the audio readings, but ...I love the audio readings of the longer pieces and listen to them as I’m reading visually all the time. My only issue (ok, maybe two) are minor but they are still bothersome. One, when you want to stop reading in the middle of the article, you have to scroll all the way to the top to stop the audio. Then the next time you’re ready to pick up where you left off, the app hasn’t marked where you left off, either in the audio or the print. I’ve started to just write down the time-stop each time, but I still have to hurriedly scroll through the print article one I restart the audio trying to find where to match up to restarted recording. It’s frustrating and I fear a deterrent for some to not use the audio readings. And I would hate to see the Audm recordings discontinued because of low usage. They really are excellent and enjoyable..Version: 5.3

Everything digital for the readerPerhaps one of the few magazine apps where the power of words (written and spoken) moves you along. The reader follows the force of images, plot, or arguments. The scrolling works well, imperceptible almost. Because the writing is so good, you don’t even try to peek ahead and see how long it is. The audio by authors is fantastic. [But I wonder why I have to go back up top to move to the next item? Or is this user error?].Version: 5.3

New Yorker iPad ReaderThis is harder to use than the previous version. It often freezes when you come back to it, and when you navigate off a page in mid-read then come back, it resets to the beginning of the article rather than where you left off. And I realize that you don’t “need”the table of contents page in the app, but it was a nice thing to have. I guess we can’t have nice things.....Version: 5.0

Downgraded AppThe latest New Yorker App is not an update or an upgrade. It is a change to a very different experience. It is not equal to the quality the New Yorker has always represented in my mind. The previous App was more consistent with that quality. The navigation in the new app is more stilted which is the primary gripe. But today a big glitch suggests something is amiss in the final review before the issue is released. The cartoon gallery didn’t work. The arrows for advancing to the next cartoon were just missing. Will there be and update with an upgrade to this clunky app. I hope so. And soon..Version: 5.0

The audible versions of stories is amazingI love the New Yorker for its great writing, but to be able to hear the articles is something I wasn’t expecting..Version: 5.2

Terrific app & magazinePros - Really glad the ads stay. Love that the cartoons can be accessed together. Con - Having the articles scroll means you far too easily lose your place.Version: 4.2.5

New FormstThe new format does not work on my iPhone or iPad. When I tap the menu in the top left corner, the app flips back to desktop icons. Please help. Gary Waller. Ac 1294530330.Version: 5.0

Regular subscriberTwenty years ago, I used to raid the used magazine racks at Bookman’s in Tucson, Arizona searching for back issues of the New Yorker for a dollar. Now I live in Barcelona and maintain a subscription. The long form essay puts perspective to current events in a far more considered way than breaking news. I enjoy the articles, stories, commentary, and cultural reviews with each new issue. It’s an important part of how I stay informed and connected to a wider tribe of thinkers, writers and cultural enthusiasts. Bravo!.Version: 5.1

DisappointedA great magazine, but so disappointed that for me in Australia it crashes before its downloaded Ron Lawrence.Version: 3.7.4

Timely & EfficientI read my New Yorker on my iPad. I'm notified immediately when new issue is out and download long before hard copy arrives by mail. My place is saved when I'm done & opens where I've left off, which is convenient. The app is very user friendly, all my past issues are archived, and I've found the courage to throw out old issues. How many of you can say that?.Version: 4.5

Brilliant appI love the New Yorker and its not really an exaggeration to say this app has changed my life. The whole user experience is great - better than in print - and having the latest New Yorker always in my pocket means I can easily keep on top of each new issue. As opposed to having a pile of partially read print copies staring resentfully at me. Love it..Version: 4.0

Writing and inquiry at their bestA trove of knowledge, up to date news on everything under the sun, and larrikinism at its best..Version: 5.1

Download process should be in background! If I accept the download notification, my current reading is in effect aborted and I cannot return to where I left off. This is a big problem when I'm catching up on on articles I skipped in earlier issues. Please just start the download and allow me to continue reading, or else silent bookmark my place as you do whenever I switch to another app..Version: 4.7.2

Australian subscriberSurprised by many comments here about this app being buggy I must say that I have had no issues with it so far. The magazine reads very well on the iPhone which surprised me! I'm tempted to cancel my hardcopy edition!!.Version: 4.0

New-Yorker appLove it ! Great app, great mag !.Version: 4.6.9

Neat updateStill a good app. Good job guys.Version: 4.8

The ‘new’ New YorkerIn my recent experience the revamped magazine, when viewed on a tablet, is much less reader-friendly than before. I’m of the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” school. Still greatly enjoy the writing, graphics, design and cartoons, but the user interface can be slow and frustrating..Version: 5.0

The App for the best magazineThe App works well, no issues..Version: 4.2.5

LongevityWhen I was 9 years old in 1956 a family friend asked me what was my favourite comic book. I told him it was the New Yorker. It still is . But I really became a devoted weekly reader during the George W. Bush era when the editorial policy shifted to include the best commentary on current affairs to be found in any periodical. It is quite simply the best American magazine..Version: 5.0

New form is worseI used to enjoy the digital version on my iPad and could read the cartoons before reading the articles. I could also read the caption contest, the three choices to vote on, and the winner. Now I can see the cartoon without captions and only the contest cartoon for submitting my suggestion for a caption. Total disappointment in the new format. Wishing they would return to the easy use format. Also, there was a way to remove downloaded issues. That seems also to be gone..Version: 5.0

Hard to accessGot caught in an endless loop, unable to change my password. Every time I tried, app told me that password needed to have at least 6 characters - it had 8. Also I needed to renter my email, but when I did, it sent me back to beginning. AAARRRGGG! Also, why can I get the latest issue on my phone, but not on my iPad. & btw, I’m still using the password given by a customer service agent because I cantor change it!.Version: 5.1

Add highlighting pleaseScrolling here i see alotta people dissatisfied with the app. For me, it works great. the ONE thing that they MUST incorporate is the ABILITY TO HIGHLIGHT Please and thank you.Version: 5.2

New YorkerI agree with other reviewers. The app is slow to load and frames are unstable, especially the cartoon gallery which often opens and fails to move to the next one in the series which moves up and almost immediately slides back out of sight leaving me fixed on the image I began with. There are similar problems with articles which often don't move with a vertical swipe but move laterally to another article..Version: 4.2.5

Painfully slow to download editionsContent and graphics are excellent but individual editions take literally hours to download. Please can you fix that?.Version: 5.2

Great! This app is a lot like having the magazine ....Version: 4.2.5

Ma favourit weeklyEvery.Version: 5.2

Great content. Ok app.Outstanding content. App is a little simple, dark mode would be nice. Syncing position between devices. Sometimes. I do like the simplicity of this print magazine version of the app though, it replicates well the browsing you’re more likely to do in a magazine..Version: 5.3

Nice one New YorkerI'm a big NYer fan and have just subscribed to the digital edition. It's great to read the latest issue here in NZ on the day it's published. The app looks fantastic, but I can't understand why digital subscribers can't also use it. Perhaps we could have a log in in the app instead of using a web browser? Then I'd probably give it 5 stars..Version: 0

TasteThe New Yorker manages to find interesting subjects in all kinds of areas. There are old friends that I recognize, and new ones that surprise me in different directions. Thank you..Version: 5.2

Finding you placeI’ve used this app for years but the developers recently broke it. You have to be extremely careful when you swipe down to turn the page. If you’re careless the app often interprets you swipe as horizontal to go to an adjacent story. If you go back to what you were reading you are taken not to where you left off but to the top of the article and have to scroll and scroll to find your place. Temporary fix? Disable story to story scrolling and force users to use the contents list. Permanent fix? Reactivate return to your place..Version: 5.2

Please fixPlease bring back the little cartoon images that are in the print edition, not the comics, but the little weekly themed images that where scattered throughout. Why are they not in the new version? Second, please bring back the ability to move from story to story without losing your spot and having to scroll down again. Lastly, where are the finalists in the cartoon contest and the winner? I like the new print size, but some of the old features need to return. Thanks..Version: 5.0

App crashesNumber one fan, but this week it crashes all the time..Version: 4.5.3

Best magazine in the worldAnd you can have it in your pocket.Version: 5.3

Great app, minor page turning glitchGreat app, works better than any other magazine app I use. Only issue is when I swipe to turn the page, I loose my spot in the article I was reading. When scrolling down to continue reading an article sometimes I accidentally swipe sideways turning the page, then I have to find my spot in the previous article. This is a new problem that has come up in the last couple months..Version: 5.2

Precedent for magazine appsThe New Yorker app should act as a precedent of all magazines on the iPad. It has a clean, easy to use navigation system to access the different sections of the magazine. Is a verbatim copy of the hard edition, but does include bonus features such as videos. Excellent pricing structure. The vertical story structure is particularly well suited to The New Yorker's long feature articles. Recommended for all fans of the magazine..Version: 0

Good, a little clunky.Great way to access the magazine while on the go. The app occasionally stops letting us download the latest issue, fixable but a bother. With the newest update if one reads part way into an article, swipes to another and returns to the first, it jumps to the head of the first article thus losing one’s place, a major bother for those who jump around or share with others. (I haven’t checked if there’s a way to avoid this). If one changes text size after reading part way into an article it jumps to another place, would be better if it stayed on or near the current page..Version: 5.2

Excellent!I really enjoy reading the New Yorker via this app! the UI is straight forward and fairly intuitive, the presentation of the content is aesthetically and ergonomically pleasing, and I find navigating the consistently excellent content fast and fun. On the downside, the downloads can take quite a while and if you switch between apps, they tend to reset to 0%. Also, pricing for the tablet-only subscription is(was?) pretty much the same as the all access subscription which seems odd (and a little unfair). Overall, very happy with this purchase though!.Version: 3.7.1

MistakeAfter we get used to where everything is on the old Ap. comes this.Very frustrating..Version: 5.0

The New YorkerWhen people describe the New Yorker as the best magazine in the world, I think they’re right. I’ve certainly not read anything better in the English language. One might think that it isn’t relevant to someone living in Australia, but it is. They human condition is global, and the insights and the quality of the writing is an edifying gift to all English language readers. I think that only death would cancel my subscription..Version: 5.0

My constantI began reading The New Yorker when I was a child, probably 10/11ish. My mother had a subscription, and of course, like so many readers’ habits, it was cartoons first. That habit hasn’t changed in 63 years. When I was 20 I got my own subscription and The New Yorker has been my constant companion ever since. I have lived outside of the USA for nearly 40 years and I rely on The New Yorker to articulate some of my thinking, to help me gain perspective and, indeed, to make me laugh, cry, be enraged, be thoughtful, be involved. I still like receiving my paper copy, and now, a digital copy which is easier to read without putting on the light and disturbing my husband’s sleep. Thank you New Yorker for your constancy..Version: 5.3

Beautiful! As an avid but struggling reader of the New Yorker I love the fact that my print subscription covers access to the app. I use both print and app now and find that I have been covering more of the magazine. Being able to look up a word using the app is very helpful. The apps layout and crisp font style greatly improves my ‘screen fatigue’ but for this reason I think the print version will always be supported by us..Version: 5.3

Thank youFor the in depth and beauty of your writings and journalism. Just purchased through iPad (great device of the future) and love every article except the ones irrelevant to Australian readers, if possible take them out please. Also would be appreciated if the iPhone app was updated to be compatible with iPhone5..Version: 4.0.1

Wasn't Broken, Why Fix It?Used to be an elegant reading experience - pure white with text and no distractions. Now we get to see a banner across the top reminding us that it is 'FICTION', a constant presence of the font size selector, and red buttons all over to enlarge the cartoons and listen to the author read. All unnecessary distractions, like reading through advertisements on a web page. Please fix!.Version: 4.2.5

I have a dream! If I could somehow get more Americans, millions more, to read The New Yorker from cover to cover the way I have for the last 30+ years, I honestly believe that we would; have fewer cases of racial hatred and distrust, fewer misogynistic male transgressions, more consistent and dependable health care for all, and someone else in the White House. Oh, and fewer people in prison. I’m just sayin’...no one covers the human intellectual and spiritual experience better or more broadly than the The NY’er..Version: 5.2
