✓ Not enough wordsIt’s weird to complain that a dictionary doesn’t have enough words, but my problem with this dictionary is that it consistently doesn’t have the right words for the german language around me. Added to that, search is slow and painful. It’s supposed to have a bunch of “near-term” search functions, but I have never found them to work. You have to type in the words you are looking for, pretty much precisely. The examples of the words in use are good… but not precisely useful. Like the time I had to pay a bill at the library and nearly ended up asking to pay a “Schnabel” because that was the first word under bill in the English translation. Frankly, this app cost a lot, but it’s not as useful as the paper version, which costs less, or as flexibel as the internet dictionaries, which are free. ✓ Decent, but Missing Some FeaturesI've recently purchased Langenscheidt's Standard German - English dictionary app for iOS. It’s a decent collection of over 70,000 word entries and definitions, but I have the following suggestions for improving the app: 1. Include plural spellings and genitive endings for all German nouns. 2. Include verb conjugation tables for all German verbs. For some reason, the English verb conjugation tables are available, but the tables for the German verbs are not. 3. Make it possible for the user to save multiple, custom flash card stacks, so that one may have a stack focusing prepositions, a stack focusing on a particular set of verbs, another stack focusing on a set of nouns, etc. Currently, there is just one configurable flash card stack. 4. Include pre-loaded flash card stacks for typical areas of study (e.g., accusative prepositions, or dative prepositions). 5. ✓ So limited for the $$ spentI agree with the other reviews, there could be so much more built into this app. You get more help from Leo, which you can download for free. I was most disappointed with the almost zero effort on verb conjugation - if you don’t enter the infinitive, good luck, and no partizip II will be offered. I also hit the limit on my “flash cards”??? ✓ Expensive for what you getOn the good side there are 365000 entries. But, since this is an English-German dictionary then only about half are German words. Still, that is a decent number given that others contain 50,000 or fewer German words. When you are offline that can make a big difference. On the negative side is the absence of noun plurals and this is a big deal! Many German nouns take on very different forms which makes looking up the word you want challenging. For any serious German student noun plural listings are a must have. I wound up having to purchase both the German dictionary -- it contains noun plural endings-- and the German-English dictionary so that I have a more complete resource for learning German. ✓ Comprehensive except for German verb formsI find this a very comprehensive and impressive dictionary, with one problem. It isn't immediately obvious, but this seems geared to German speakers learning English rather than vice versa. It doesn't include conjugated verb forms in German. In the English section I can look up 'went' and it tells me this is the past of 'go'. But if I look up 'ging' in the German section it shows nothing. My paper Langenscheidt will tell me this is the past of 'gehen' and it had not occurred to me that this app would not. ✓ Got it, used it.This is more of a dictionary for a german speaking person learning English than vice versa. There are no verb conjugations. Can't find a verb by entering it's past or perfect form. Nouns don't have plurals. Can't upgrade to a pro version at the moment. You have to buy it separately. But the interface is very good. My advice is try a Leo app first. ✓ Waste of MoneyI was expecting a lot more functionality from this app based on the rather steep price I paid for it. I've used this app to look up words and numerous times have ended up going to the web (which is free) to find what I need. For example, I just tried to look up the word "hielten." This app did not recognize it at all. I went to Safari and found three web sites that told me that "hielten" is the first and third person plural preterite and subjunctive of the verb "halten."
