Dictionary.com Pro for iPad for Negative User Reviews

No word of the day, please! As long as this app doesn’t make it easy to stop the word of the day from showing up, it only deserves one star..Version: 7.2.11

Will not go to landscape view on iPadI like this app but we use it for our Scrabble dictionary , however we find it very frustrating that my keyboard on my iPad Pro goes one way and the dictionary goes the other. We are not able to change this dictionary to landscape view to coincide with our typing. Eventually we take the iPad out of its secure home so we can see our search words without standing on our heads. Yech!.Version: 7.2.27

Screen sizeNeeds to be updated to fit iPad Pro screen size..Version: 7.2.27

Sync Favs w iPhoneI love the app and use it on iPhone all the time. That said, I don’t want to maintain two separate and unique lists of favorite words. This makes no sense, particularly when the iPhone app already syncs to iCloud. I’m confused why there are two individual apps (and don’t remember if I purchased both or not) but I’d rather run the iPhone app on iPad and have a single list of merged favorites than maintain two lists..Version: 7.2.8

Not included. Online only upgrades.ALl the upgrades that I have just paid for aren't included in the offline version AT ALL! Is it a LIE! Translator? Online only. Slideshows? Onlne only. Trends, blog, daily words? All online only. Upgrades? 'Currently unavailable' online only. Pronounciations? Online only. Learners? online only. Ryhmes? Online only. Examples? online only. Slang? Online only. Idioms? Onlne only. Voice search? Upgrade and online only. Origins & History? Online online. ALL onlne only access. ALL reasons why I have been ripped off - I have iTunes and only wired Internet access..Version: 4.0

Translate not workingI am finding that my in-app purchases such as translate and voice translate are not working. Also encyclopedia, grammar and more are not showing up on the homepage. My purchase history confirms I purchased all in-apps, but only a couple are working. Not impressed..Version: 4.0

Never respond to app support!I've tried 5 times to contact them regarding restoring my in app purchase over the past several months, no reply. Can't give them any stars.... Great app, poor service...Version: 3.2.3

My first word "Pervasive" did not exist on this app... There was no link for online look up. :(As you can imagine, I was horrified with the findings of my first word search. "Pervasive" is a straightforward word. It is not a contemporary slang or jargon term. It has roots firmly within the English language. Considering how vast, our dictionary is, I can understand that a small development team might struggle with uploading new words to a flagship app, but as these words exist within it's online catalogue, I fail to see why they have not made the grade, or why I wasn't told when looking for the word, something along the lines of: "Not all words have made it to this app, due to space or resource restrictions. Please look at our online dictionary for more results." I have been told space was a problem, but bearing in mind that the OED could be condensed on to only a couple of CDs, as was the case with Hutchinson Encyclopaedia, I fail to see why a simple data transfer can't work here. Truly disgusted. I've been informed that "pervasive" might make it into the next update... Good news... BUT this was my first word. How many millions are missing? People with large English vocabs will be fine, as you'll know which words should exist. Foreign users beware..Version: 2.5

Not always reliableEditing could be better. Etymological notes are there only sometimes. Judgement can be erratic, such as listing "unfertile" at the end of the "fertile" entry but not "infertile". British English is generally catered for, but e.g. "shunt" in the sense of car accident has been missed. Also, continual pleading with the buyer to write a review is irritating. And please do away with the slow splash screen..Version: 4.0

Unusable-crashes constantlyNormally I would contact the support line for these matters, but the app support link takes you to an advertisement product review is the only way to indicate a problem. Since the IOS 6 update, this app has crashed upon opening, so quickly that it cannot be used. help please!!!!.Version: 2.5

DictionaryHas not worked since the last update. Please fix..Version: 7.2.6

Voice search doesn't workAfter speaking out a word, the voice search just keep recording. Does stop to show up the words..Version: 4.0

Dictionary?Too difficult to use, a waste of money, easier on my phone!.Version: 7.2.17

No split viewDisappointing that the “premium” app doesn’t allow split view. It’s not productive when using Microsoft Word, or other word processing applications..Version: 7.2.8

Upgrade is disappointing. The Dictionary app that won all the awards is NOT this version. I'm sure that I would appreciate the rhyme-finder feature if I was writing rhyming verses, and the Word of the Day feature is a little easier for my arthritic fingers than tapping tiny buttons, but I would prefer to go back to the previous version. Where did the great question feature go to? The histories and information contained in that feature were so informative as well as interesting. Perhaps the previous version was just more grown-up in appearance and content but, after trying this version for a week, I am going to delete it from my ipad and re-install the previous one from my computer..Version: 3.0

It works well. After paying and downloading the ad free version I then realised I also had to pay for voice search which I thought was wrong, but that grudge aside it works well..Version: 2.3

Deteriorating fastApart from the endless and unstoppable word of the day pop ups the app works well. But... It's clear the business model is to push upgrades and add ons to the point where this is becoming intrusive. Get this version. Don't upgrade..Version: 3.1

Quite a good appThe thesaurus part seems to better than Roget's - design-wise as well as in terms of synonyms offered. The combination of dictionary and thesaurus is quite useful. Charging for voice driven search though is a total rip-off, in particular since it doesn't add that much convenience plus each payment is capped to a certain amount of voice searches before you'll have to purchase another batch. It's that annoying feature that made me allocate only three stars to this app..Version: 2.3

Font SizeCan you give large font size choice? It costs nothing, I never liked to read in small font size..Version: 7.2.19

Forget Prescriptivists or Descriptivists get Activists hereNow they are beginning to tell you what words should mean based on political bias. Deleted app. No thank you!.Version: 7.2.27

GoodHave used this app for while. Generally like the app. New user interface is a bit annoying in some aspects, but not too bad - you get accustomed to it quite quickly. Confused though as to why the iPhone version has the option of a Medical and a Science dictionary as paid upgrades, but the iPad version doesn't. Strange..Version: 3.0

Does not render correctly on iPad ProThis app has not received an update in over a year. I suspect the developers haven’t even looked at it since then. Go to Home, pick a random article, and see that HTML is not rendered properly. The text has JavaScript and random markup sprinkled throughout and no line breaks and no formatting of any kind. Test your apps before posting them to the AppStore..Version: 7.2.27

In-app purchases not interchangable between iPhone and iPad app.Great content and user interface. However I must subtract three stars from this five star app because in-app purchases are not interchangable between iPhone and iPad versions. There are lots of other developers who acknowledge my spent money regardless of the device I use. Furthermore I feel that this should be made clear in the app description. Instead it says that the iPhone app (which I made in-app purchases first) is "compatible" with both devices. Not happy..Version: 3.3

No Internet connection required ....really !!Dictionary works fine...but you need internet connection for audio. Not worth $5 bucks. I need to check pronunciations for certain words and i can't do it without internet connection. Five stars for just th dictionary but one star for price and internet connection requirement..Version: 2.1

Not working!I have the premium version, after last last last update the pronunciation function hasn’t been working...please fixed.Version: 7.2.17

DictionaryI must be stupid...I paid $5 for this and didn't read all the info. I expected to have all the bells and whistles and then they asked for more money for one of the functions! (the voice function where you say a word and it spells it for you). They very carefully described this as without ads..and that is what it is! No ads but not an all inclusive app...shame on me!.Version: 2.3

Since Update Won’t Open on iPad Mini 4Crashes over and over and over......... Was fine before recent update!.Version: 7.2.11

What happened to the "translator" ?I would never update to an app that was less than what I had. I was able to translate to any language I needed. Now I can't. Sure you've got lots of stuff, but for me those things are a useless waste to time. Now how do I get my translator back???😡.Version: 7.2.1

Good, but...It is really a good App and dictionary, but all Apps suggested with it that I bought on IPod Touch 5 G did not Appear on the IPad 2. They still do nothing about it even if I told them that there was a problem. It is really not fair..Version: 3.2.3

Gimmicky, awkward GUI, no off-line accesdThe free iPhone version of this has a simple, clean interface and works off-line, but it desn't fit the iPad's screen. Since it works so well, I decided to buy the iPad version. Chalk vs. cheese. The interface is gimmicky and awkward, and on-line access is required. I am requesting a refund..Version: 7.2.14

Where is my translation function?I need the translation function to help me lean English..Version: 7.2.2

Falling short...I would like to give this app a good review. I have it installed on my iPad mini & I use it a lot. I have the ad-free paid for version & have also acquired most, if not all, of the in-app purchases. However, I just got an iPod touch (64GB 5G) for greater portability & it is not available from my iCloud repository for installation onto my new device. It does appear to be to be available in the app-store but it looks like I would have to pay for everything a second time. Or download the free version & put up with the damned ads. NOT HAPPY! I would recommend that anyone considering this app take a look at WordWeb which is based on Princeton university's WordNet project. It is genuinely free & the app is maintained & kept up to date..Version: 7.2.27

Adequate, but not retina.I would be perfectly happy to give this app a five star review if it were updated as to utilise the retina display. I am bitterly disappointed. On the other hand, it is so significantly different from the website version that it does justify the purchase..Version: 2.3

Rather American in policyInteresting app but find the American perspective on information rather annoying. Prefer the use of British spellings and usage..Version: 7.2.11

Please update this appI use this app every day on my iPad. Lately I have been seeing this message; "this app will make your iPad run slowly, please notify the developer for a update" otherwise this app is valuable for my school studies.Version: 4.0

Upgrade this oneEven though this a working progress, this one needs the same function as upgrade one. But please make sure to add auto rotation function to it as well.Version: 7.2.27

Etymology of Words MissingThe etymologies of words, which this app calls “Origins and History” (shouldn’t they be using the correct terminology?) are now all missing. This is very annoying. Etymologies are highly useful for language learning. This has always been a rather flakey app, however, and the developers flakey at fixing things. Buyer beware..Version: 7.2.20

Not ad freeThis app is littered with upgrade options which make it decidedly NOT ad free. Very mis-leading..Version: 3.3

Would be 5 stars if notable flaws were fixedFor a paid app, it is a disappointing experience. You cannot launch the app from its own notifications or the widget. When I get a daily word notification and press on it, the app tries to launch but crashes. Every time. The same happens if I tap on “Learn more” in the daily word widget. I have been using iPad Pro 2018 with the latest software. The app also suffers from formatting issues. You can’t see the widget very well if you turn on dark mode. Otherwise, once you do launch the dictionary it’s a nice app..Version: 7.2.27

Awesome appBut lacking ability to easily go back to previous word (back button).Version: 7.2.6

Crashes since the updateI have had to drop my rating as the app crashes since the update..Version: 7.2.6

IPad version and iPhone version do not shareMy disappointment might be I bought the iPad version and when I download on my iPhone, I have to buy it again?.Version: 4.0

Feel a bit cheatedI paid for the full download and it's a good app. I didn't realise the speech part had to be paid for again, which actually makes it an expensive app. That's the only part that lets it down, it should be included as its advertised with it. It should be made very clear that u don't get it as that is why I purchased it. With speech it would have got 5*.Version: 2.3

Print too smalll andToo light for people with poor vision..Version: 7.2.14

Content is good, but UI is confusingReally, UI is not logical. I much prefer the UI of the iPhone version. Since iPhone and iPad apps are separate purchases, there is no excuse for non-sensical interface and layout. iPhone app is much more user friendly. Please fix..Version: 7.2.22

No External Keyboard SupportIt is extremely frustrating that there have been no serious efforts to address those of us who use external keyboards. Seriously? But then again, I guess when an app’s “about” section shows a copyright two years out of date, one shouldn’t expect much from their developers. Overall I love the functionality of the app. As someone who writes on their iPad, the program is useful. As someone who uses an external keyboard, the lack of keyboard commands is inexcusable. Using the app slows me down and forces me to take my hands off my keyboard. And that’s a deal breaker. Meh..Version: 7.2.27

Sorely lacking compared to its iPhone counterpartIf you could at least add the functionality to sync favourites with iCloud, just like the iPhone version does then I would give it 5 stars. Without such an update I’ve moved onto other dictionaries which is a shame as I purchased all the updates to this app..Version: 7.2

DisappointingUpgraded to the newer version and have been extremely disappointed. The older version worked quicker with less problems. Trying to paste into the search box is often problematic if it works at all, there's no back button - options, recent is not as convenient and you use to be able to click on words in the narrative text to look them up which is no longer an option. Don't like this newer version and wish I could down grade!.Version: 3.0

Very good when actually workingWhen this app is working it is really brilliant and very user friendly however I have had experience with it crashing multiple times and the thesaurus function disappearing. I have bought the full version now and I hope it will be less buggy. Seriously, fix the glitches and you have an amazing app..Version: 2.5

Where are the upgrades after iOS 13?I purchased all the upgrades, but after iOS 13 was installed, I can't find any of them on this app. No science or medical dictionary, no idioms & grammar, no encyclopedia..... I'm very angry because I can't use them when I do need them!.Version: 7.2.22

Good app but too much adds. It’s a really good app to use but there are sooo many adds! Overall quite good but sometimes when I type a word in, it autocorrects it to another word. Thanks!.Version: 7.2.8

New version crashesSince the update I have been unable to download this. I used this app most days and am lost without it! Please advise..Version: 7.2.6

Good source of materialFor a freebie, this dictionary isn't too bad. The developers need to realise, however, that not everyone in the world speaks American English, or for that matter writes it! As a Brit, I find it infuriating, when people call themselves a worldwide resource, do not acknowledge this basic fact. Not all the world spells colour, color or use a z where an s is equally appropriate as in materialise. It would be nice to look up a word and find included alternate spellings for the same word- surely not to difficult, then it really could claim to be worldwide resource. with this exception, this is a useful resource, luckily I am a good speller and can accommodate American English - up to a point!.Version: 3.0

No Split Screen for latest IOSAll I can say is, unbelievable! I just paid $9 for this and all because I believed (don't know why) that I could use the split screen option while working in Ai Writer, but no, there's no split screen option. This is a terrible mistake by the developers after they say it is compatible with the latest iOS, which is obviously isn't. Until they fix this, I am not impressed..Version: 4.0

Customer support? For some time, I’ve been unable to restore premium packages I bought a couple of years ago. The robust app I bought is now no more valuable than all the other dictionary apps available. I’m disappointed and frustrated. I’ve contacted customer support several times in the last few weeks. I’ve heard nothing in response. The product was good, but the customer service leaves *much* to be desired..Version: 7.2.12

Poor experience on iPadI have full paid version. The app is poorly designed and dysfunctional. Don’t even see all the upgrades I made..Version: 7.2.16

Upgrades don’t workI purchased all the upgrades but found that none of them will work. Very poor..Version: 7.2.12

Would be 5 star if multitasking compatible. It would be really useful if you provide the multitasking feature in iPad..Version: 7.2.27

A so called professional appSuggest that you send your writer for English lessons. Legible is an adjective or it was when I went to school. Not the best of advertisements for your app..Version: 7.2.18

CrashesWord of the day crashes app on iPad..Version: 7.2.6

Voice search?????I bought this app because it said it had VOICE SEARCH!! There is NO place that shows or does this feature. Oh, it pronounces the word it brings up, but no way for a voice search, which is a feature I need. This app is like the free version I already had. Looks like a waste of money buying this!!!! If I could, I'd give it a No Star rating!!!!!!!.Version: 7.2.2

Origins MissingThe word origins section has disappeared while it is still available in the iPhone version of the app, which is also at a higher version number. That suggests the app is receiving minimal maintenance..Version: 7.2.21

Great Dictionary — Horrible AppIt appears that this app has not been updated in years. I paid for this app years ago when it was still being updated, but on my 2020 iPad Pro, the app itself does not fit the aspect ratio of my screen. That means it’s blurry and doesn’t even expand to the full width of my screen. I get the app in the middle with two black bars on the sides. This is a great dictionary with a huge number of resources, but I expected the app to continue to be updated since I paid for it. If they had discontinued the app, I would understand — but they still sell it on the app store. That means people are buying an app that is already well outdated. I would love to see a refresh to this app similar to what they did for the iPhone app, especially if it is to stay on the app store for any considerable amount of time. It seems silly that the iPad app could be so ignored when there is a shiny new iPhone app..Version: 7.2.27

Good but bugs me to rate it continually!I like this app and find it a much cleaner interface than using their website. But it is completely annoying and intrusive to be bugged every time I open it with the request to rate it!.Version: 2.5

Medical and Science Dictionaries Not DownloadingHi all, can you please advise why the dictionaires above are not downloading in my ipad? I bought the dictionary pro edition some while ago. Please advise bc i really need this to work for my studies!.Version: 7.2.15

I had to purchase twiceAt first I purchased the iPhone version, for smaller screens. Not eligible for a refund. So I ended up purchasing two versions of this app, and wasting $3.99. Why is the iPhone version not eligible for a refund when it is of no use to me and was a purchase mistake? Perhaps you should clearly state “NOT FOR IPAD” at the top of your description. Not refunding this mistake is just ridiculous. You are more interested in money than doing the right thing..Version: 7.2.12

Good but not greatPotential to be a great app. there's plenty of room for improvement..Version: 3.2.1

Bit expensiveHaving just bought the iPhone version on special I was a incensed at discovering I also had to pay for the iPad version. The makers of this app have a captive market and although it is quite a good app they are exceedingly arrogant and money hungry. There does not appear to be a large difference between the paid and ad-free versions at all, unfortunately. Five bucks just to not be blasted with ads? Pssht. It really is quite gross they expect you to buy two versions for each device. Until they offer free voice options for paid users, more features (or alternatively reduce the hilarious pricetag) they will not get my extra three stars! I have an inkling this app is nice and expensive for the Aussie market too. Just like it always is... regional pricing is a joke guys!.Version: 2.4

Why do I have to pay for this in my iPhone?I love your app, but can’t understand why I have to pay twice for my iPhone and iPad..Version: 7.2.1

Stop workingAfter installing the last update, on June 10, stop working. I can't open the app..Version: 7.2.6

Gps and not universalThis app should be a universal app Stop forcing people to "always use GPS" when the app is in the background, it kills battery, and seems like you are only interested in tracking us. Add the option of GPS "while using". Until then 1 star..Version: 3.3
