Merriam-Webster Dictionary+ for Negative User Reviews

Needs: UNabridged! Fast look-up! Spell-Guesser & more usage-controversy indicatorsThis is a decent, reliable app—Which Can Be IMPROVED: (1) WE NEED M-W’s UNABRIDGED VERSION!!! (I usually look up RARE words—the ones often NOT found in M-W’s Collegiate Dictionary app. There is ZERO reason M-W can’t provide access to its unabridged dictionary!) (2) Make Dictionary Look-ups FASTER! (I suggest programming the M-W Dictionary for its bread & butter: WORD LOOK-UPS!!!—Develop the software so I can IMMEDIATELY Enter the searched-for word, while ancillary portions of the app (e.g., games, or Word of the Day) are loading. (3) At least MENTION there is a USAGE Controversy when there is one, so the user may choose to do further study. E.g., M-W features “SUPPOSABLY”—but says nothing about the common usage error of substituting the word for “supposedly.” (4) Include PHONETIC GUESS / MisSpelling HELP in your word look-ups. All sorts of software, including that on search-engines, Wikipedia, etc., etc. help users find words—even if spelled incorrectly. One reason people use dictionaries is to LEARN the correct spelling[s] of a word! (This wd be LIGHT-Lifting, software development-wise!) presently, if a word is not PERFECTLY spelled, M-W will do NOTHING to allow me to look it up..Version: 5.2.3

Great dictionary but…Would like an UI option for the search bar and mic buttons to be nearer the bottom of the screen so I don’t have to stretch my thumbs..Version: 4.6

Missing many words that are in the website versionThe app is good if you need offline access, otherwise you’re better off just using the web version, which includes many words that are missing from the app (as I frequently discover when playing some popular word-puzzle games). Several times a week I try to look up a word in the app, and it doesn’t show it as a word, only for it to be there as a fully defined word on the web version of the same MA dictionary. Oh well!.Version: 5.6.7

Needs some workI like to think that for the Pro version, that this app can truly help a user build up their vocabulary. I wonder if there is any way to have the app give a notification of the word of the day? Notifications can definitely help me build up this habit. For Apple Watch, I would love to see Apple’s Scribble for a user’s text input. This could be a great help if a user may not be familiar with the pronunciation of a word. Having integration with SiriKit and Universal Search would most definitely improve usage of the app and help to see this app replace the system dictionary. One other thought would be to see the option to send a word via Apple’s Share Sheet to the dictionary. It would be great to add a list of words defined and be quizzed on them periodically for mastery. When using Apple Watch to search for definitions...I frequently received an error message of “please try again” when trying to search for words. When searching for words using Apple Watch, and it actually does provide a result, it would be wonderful to have synonyms come up for a word that is submitted. I would love for the Apple Watch to enhance my learning by providing quizzes for previously sought out definitions or synonyms. And is there anyway to mark someone’s progress in terms of reading level or vocabulary level? Lastly, I am curious if they are looking for beta testers to help give feedback and make the app more robust..Version: 4.3.2

Offline access sometimes fails without internet connectionGenerally works ok but despite paying for the Pro version which promises offline access, I was unable to view basic definitions for some words when my internet connection was down..Version: 4.4.1

Bug-ridden - please fix!App only allows one word search before it doesn't allow words to be typed into the search bar (app needs to be reopened before another word can be searched).Version: 3.1

Nice app, but...Nice dictionary app, but a few things: —You ask how we feel way too much, you don’t just ask every couple day, weeks, or months, but mutilple times a day, I’m not sure if it’s based off time, or words looked up, but please, stop. Do not just make it a tad less, but at least make it every couple days or longer that you ask in app how we feel. Until then, I’ll tap the frown face, because this alone is annoying. Feature requests —I think it would help a lot if this app had a spell checker. As you type, it’s not just looking for words you might be typing, but words you might have meant. For example if you typed “kat” “cat” would be an option. Of course this would go for bigger and more complex words too. This would also make it easier if the speaker isn’t available, or you just don’t want to use it. —Another feature I think would be nice is a feature that I think some dictionary apps/programs call “wildcards”. For example you could type “c*d” and it would find all words that start with c and end with d or “c*r*d” for the same thing. * would be any amount of letters between the two letters it’s between. In addition to the * for many letters, a ? for one letter. For example “c?b” would find a words that start with c, end in b, and have one letter in between. “c?a?e” would turn up crate. It would be nice if we could do the above in addition to any number or combination of ? and *. Please add these features, I really think they would add to the app..Version: 4.4.1

No wildcard search?Why?.Version: 4.4.1

THIS APP IS NOT AD-FREE!!! DON'T BUY IT!Google provisions ads on thus app! In what language does that mean ad-free???!.Version: 4.4.1

It’s just OKNeeds updating. Many words not in dictionary..Version: 4.6

Merrimack WebsterTotally totally useless I bought the app, having somehow forgotten Google.Version: 4.5

Needs updateThe latest update was 7 months ago and this app keeps crashing in iOS 13 system..Version: 4.6

A little cluttered and could be more accessibleThis app is pretty nice, and it has a lot of features for vocab building and the like. It also works pretty well as both a dictionary and thesaurus. However, it’s not the most streamlined. More pressing, some prominent elements are images, not text,. Therefore, they are not recognized by voiceover. This would be less of an issue, but these non text elements take up the majority of the main dictionary page. Additionally, I’ve encountered this problem where once I look at the word of the day, again, a big image at the top of the page that can’t be read, I am unable to return to the menu. The menu is there, but when tapping on the icon, voiceover reads the word of the day banner. Therefore, extraneous inaccessible components prevent this app from being my convenient, go to pocket dictionary..Version: 4.4.1

Comment on versionsThere is no difference between free version and premium version. The only difference I noticed is that premium version has no ads..Version: 1.2

Crash when swipe right!Crash and also few examples.Version: 4.6

The pronunciation function doesn't workThe pronunciation function doesn't work.Version: 3.4.3

Not a great appCharging quite much but not delivering a good app. Merriam webster people have done an aweful job. I tried recommending this app to few fellows learning english but website is better and it's free. Bad job. Expensive app. Not useful to people learning english..Version: 2.1

Not as good as beforeThe recent update has resulted in significant slowdown of accompanying audio file..Version: 4.4.1

No pronunciation when phone mutedI love this app. Especially the tons of examples given to demonstrate the use of a word. Very important for me, since I am not a native english speaker... but here is also the problem: the dictionary wouldn't pronounce the word (by clicking the speaker symbol) when the phone is muted... since my phone is almost always muted, I first thought the function is broken, until I got a hint from the internet... I think, switching the speaker on and off again everytime I want to use this function is not a solution... very good app, very good dictionary, but without the pronunciation working I can only give three stars....Version: 3.3.1

Nice, but missing a feature and definitionsThis is the only dictionary I use outside of the built-in iOS dictionary, but it’s missing an important feature: integration with search. When typing in the iOS system search, nothing appears for the MW dictionary. I see an entry for the word in the system dictionary though. This means that I have to launch the MW app before searching, an extra step vs. other apps (this despite having “Search & Siri Suggestions” on for the MW app). Also, the dictionary seems to be missing some definitions vs. the web site. For example, “apocatastatis”. Esoteric? Sure, but that’s why I need a dictionary! If I just wanted to look up common words, I’d use the built-in dictionary..Version: 4.3.1

Good basic dictionary but missing wordsI’m here today because of asystole, a word meaning the cessation of heartbeat and lack of electrical activity in the heart. This is just one of many words I’ve looked up that I didn’t find in this dictionary and had to look up online. This is a good basic dictionary but I’d like to see an unabridged dictionary become available. Its not like I’m reading technical journals or other specialized material. A lot of the words I can’t find are words I’ve found through the words with friends app, or from movies or tv. Asystole came from stargate SG-1. Basic network tv from the 1990’s is stumping this dictionary lol. All that said, I have no other complaints about this dictionary, though I’m here today to try a different dictionary. I see their competition has more words.Version: 5.0.3

OkPretty cool but, I know that I can find better easily. It’s like 60%. Just pass..Version: 4.5

Dictionary reviewFirst time trying it so we will have to practice.Version: 5.0.3

Search and databaseSearch feature is poor. Have to type words correctly, no misspelled words suggestions. Many words cannot be found..Version: 3.4.3

App freezesApp doesn't work anymore. Freezes now on opening logo, which has the search box superimposed on it. Using an iPhone 6..Version: 4.6

OK as far as it goes...decent for high school, but lacking for serious academics.LOVE THE WORD ORIGINS INFO! I’m a logophile, so the word root notes are important and beneficial to me. PLEASE keep and even expand these in future updates! HOWEVER, as I have found with most online resources and apps, it skimps in crucial places. I often find print versions to be far better because of the depth of information they contain. For example, the lists of synonyms and antonyms in this app are sorely lacking. They contain too much slang and are too short. And every time I’ve tried to use the THESAURUS, it has proved USELESS because it contains only the SAME synonyms and antonyms given in the dictionary! What’s the point, I wonder. I HAVE EARLY 80’s PRINT VERSIONS OF ROGET’S AND THE AMERICAN HERITAGE DICTIONARY THAT ARE MUCH MORE THOROUGH. So, all in all, useful only for convenience and superficial knowledge..Version: 4.3.1

12 Pro Max (iOS 14.x)Please add support for landscape use and dark mode on iOS. Users have been waiting for years at this point. Forcing readers from landscape use of their devices and into portrait orientation always shatters immersion, and nighttime use of the app is unpleasant at best. These issues leave one to resort to stock alternatives (eg, Oxford) that operate in a manner consistent with both screen orientation and system theme. I almost never use the app anymore at this point. – – – – –FULL REVIEW: The quality of life improvements are welcome, as the user experience has improved in almost every conceivable way with this update. M-W’s form and function remain first in class, but many users would still like to see suggestions listed for misspellings, all too common on cramped virtual keyboards. Having to use fine scrolling or backspacing to the erroneous character has always felt tedious, even onerous. Another long-standing (ie, over four years and counting to date) request: LANDSCAPE SUPPORT. Many users are sick of being torn from landscape to portrait mode when multitasking. Minus two stars initially, then three, which feels generous because the devs are not listening. They also have not added support for dark mode in iOS. PLEASE ADD DARK MODE SUPPORT!.Version: 5.0.3

Needs more featuresGood app but can be improved. Adding spaced repetition flash cards would be a nice feature to have, considering that other free dictionary apps like Japanese has this feature, I think adding this would not be difficult..Version: 3.6.1

Not completeThis is a decently designed app - but it doesn't appear to be a complete version of the MW dictionary. In the short time I've had it I've already found several words that are in the web version of MW but not the app. "Henge", for instance. If it's not the complete dictionary then what's the point?! At least with a dictionary you know that the entry is not there, but with the thesaurus you wouldn't even know the word was missing. The thesaurus is worse than the dictionary, missing bafflingly common words - 'key' in the sense of lock and key, 'rock' in the sense of stone etc, etc. I like the app design - but if it fails at its fundamental purpose then it's hard to give it a high rating..Version: 4.3

Here’s my review!ZERO star! Paid in full but this app hardly gets any update / new features / etc unlike their subscription version!.Version: 5.0.3

Poor ThesaurusThe thesaurus needs work, there are free options out there that provide better options - disappointing investment for $7.99.Version: 4.4.1
